Yes, that's actually pretty common for O&G exploration and production outfits. Check out EGY, CIVI and NOG - also undervalued and priced below book value. It gets even more extreme when they don't pay a dividend yet (like Yangarra Resources in Canada for instance - my wife is still stubbornly tied up with that one). Not that anybody actually cares about that price-to-book metric, of course (hard lesson I've had to learn over the years). Only for bank stocks will major investors seem to give book value any consideration, unfortunately...

EGY posted and it seems pretty positive, see chatgpt summary of results: Based on the report for VAALCO Energy’s third quarter of 2024: Positive Aspects: 1. Increased Revenue and Production: Net revenue grew by 21% compared to the previous quarter, reaching $140.3 million due to higher sales volumes, especially from the Côte d’Ivoire liftings. 2. Growth in Adjusted EBITDAX: The company saw a 28% increase in Adjusted EBITDAX from Q2 2024, totaling $92.8 million. This increase reflects strong sales volumes and operational improvements. 3. Improved Production Efficiency: Production expense per BOE dropped by 33% from the previous quarter to $19.80 per BOE, indicating cost-effective production. 4. Successful Acquisitions: The Côte d’Ivoire acquisition added valuable assets and increased reserves, aligning with VAALCO’s strategy to expand its West African portfolio. 5. Healthy Cash Flow and Dividends: VAALCO maintained an unrestricted cash balance of $89.1 million and declared a quarterly dividend of $0.0625 per share, showing commitment to shareholder returns. Challenges: 1. Income Tax Expense Increase: Income tax expenses increased significantly from $9.3 million in Q2 to $32.6 million in Q3, impacted by non-deductible items and adjustments from foreign operations. 2. Depreciation and Amortization Costs: Depreciation and depletion expenses rose by 42% quarter-over-quarter, influenced by the Côte d’Ivoire acquisition’s depletable assets. 3. G&A Expenses: General and administrative expenses were higher than in the same quarter last year due to growth-related professional fees and administrative costs, though they were slightly lower than in Q2 2024. In summary, VAALCO’s Q3 report reflects strong operational and financial performance, driven by strategic acquisitions and cost efficiencies. However, rising tax and depreciation costs represent areas to monitor. This overall trend suggests a positive performance with strategic gains, positioning the company well for future growth .

Hi Gracie. I mostly look for revenue growth, which often leaks into EPS growth. I'm targeting HIMS and CLS for this reason. I've taken relatively large positions (for me) in both. I am a bit more leery of HIMS; I will watch their short-term price movement closely. With that said, I think both have long-term growth potential in line exceeding just about any stock. Another stock I'm heavily invested in is EGY. With a recent purchase and subsequent stall in dividend and reversion of share buybacks noted, Vaalco was cruising towards decent revenue growth. I think the next couple/few quarters will produce ups and downs while they get Svenska's assets acclimated to their model. After that, I'm hopeful that can continue their base production along the same rise as it were, while reaping the benefits of a regional powerhouse that could grow exponentially (again, relatively speaking).

This analysis is based on the current option open interest. With that option open interest, it calculates portfolio-level greeks--notably Delta and Gamma. More importantly, once the portfolio level greeks are established, I can now simulate the change in greeks at different price points. From there, I can find the price levels where portfolio-level gamma is the highest, and the portfolio-level delta is close to 0. For some tickers, the underlying price reacts strongly off of delta neutral, gamma max, and sometimes both. It's the reaction off of these price levels in the past that is being used to drive trading signals. The plays and target entry prices given are calculated using a binomial option pricing model that reflect the expected size and duration of the reaction from gamma max or delta neutral. A lot of these plays are profitable by underlying moves in stock. The best plays benefit from the directional move as well as the increase in IV. # Notes - Something to give you a new wrinkle * If the price has moved past the entry price, exercise caution. Something changed between the time these plays were generated and market open. * Look to sell half your position on a double, and freeroll the rest to exit at your discretion. * I tend to risk up to 1% of my total capital on any trades I take. If my conviction is lower, I'll only allocate 0.5% or even 0.25% of my capital to the trade, and dollar cost average in. * The trades were calculated before market open, and so are based on information up to yesterday. Keep that in mind when deciding to enter well after the fact. New price movement may invalidate the original thesis. # FAQ - Because others have already asked. * These plays are mostly puts. Are you a gay bear? * No. It so happens that the companies have had some recent run-up which implies they are overextended. These trades are primarily some form of mean-reversion either toward or away from an important price level. * Are you entering all these plays? * No. There have been a dearth of plays in the WSB morning talks, and so I opened up my bag of tools slightly wider to point out more plays with a probable edge to help lead apes to more gain porn. Go through this curated list of plays, pick the ones you like based on whatever additional analysis you use, and get that gain porn. * You mentioned a new play on the same ticker in the past. What does that mean? * The new play should replace the old play. The old play is likely now invalid and if you haven't entered in, don't chase the price. Remember that a new day's worth of data has been produced and the newer play reflects that data, the older play does not. * Where are the crayons? I only see words. * Click the links above. * Have you back-tested this? * Yes. Results show a moderate Sharpe Ratio (1.76), with an expected win rate of 63% of trades (7% margin of error) * What is the historical performance? * The realized Sharpe Ratio is 1.88 with a 66% win rate. Based on the trade performance so far, there is a 95% chance the expected win rate will be between 62% and 77%. (Stats as of 2023-02-28)

Agree with PapaCharlie9 I also received options in a M&A deal. Had a weird underlying symbol, "EGY1". Took awhile to understand because I had not read up on the merger. Here is the sequence of events. Bought 2705 TGA @ 4.45 ... sold CCs ... Sold 27 TGA Jan 20 2023 4.0 Call @ 0.45 `Merger: VAALCO acquired each TransGlobe share for 0.6727 of a VAALCO` `OPTION POSITION CHANGE (EGY1 Jan 20 2023 4.0 Call)` So then I had a low-liquidity option, and a symbol I never counted on. I waited for a red day, and closed the option. `Bought 27 EGY1 Jan 20 2023 4.0 Call @ 0.5` I considered selling CCs on the 1819 shares of EGY. Did not want EGY long-term. Made a conditional order to sell shares after they are above cost. `SELL -1,819 EGY @LAST-.01 TRSTPLMT LAST-3.00% ASK GTC WHEN EGY MARK AT OR ABOVE 6.00 [TO CLOSE]` After the $6 trigger is met, a trailing stop will be activated.

Smaller energy companies ARLP and EGY. I got murdered on EXXON

r/wallstreetbetsSee Comment

I’m professionally attached to the industry in a way, but I will tell you this, despite a multi-decadal study of the industry, I am unable to reliably pick specific winners or losers. The industry is a low PE one, and there are really no superstars, particularly in higher market caps. If there is a bargain, look to micro-caps. Energy is primarily effected by macro economic things, then less so by asset based strategy, then lastly by even handed leadership. If you are looking for an undervalued stock, look for one that’s not well known (not PAA or XOM or etc, you are looking for sub 1bln cos) that has a low cost asset base, and steady management, whose valuation seems to lag behind its peers. Look closely at per barrel and per MCF costs and their production/ reserves ratio, FD costs, G/A per barrel, and of course leverage. This is production co advice, not midstream though. Midstream is a tough industry to call since they are making pennies on tens of dollars of transported value. It’s like trying to figure out which Amazon truck has the best ROI. The data is also dark since the locational differentials make all the difference and you have to pay a few thousands a year to get that data. I know this is a lot of non specific advice so I’ll give you my current view: 1. There is too much crude transportation in North America. Crude focused midstream is in for a rough run unless Russian oil is truly blockaded and the US turns on the pumps, which is an unlikely scenario. 2. There is, in the short term, an enourmous shortage of gas transportation and export capacity. I haven’t looked at the players valuation in this space, but it’s entirely possible that there’s a diamond in the rough here that explodes on Q1 earnings. SWN is a gas concentrated upstream co. I forget who owns Freeport LNG, but they might be a good play if they haven’t already run up. 3. Large caps attract political attention that small caps don’t. That’s all I have to say about that. 4. Investing in a commodity based industry whose product is at multi year highs is very risky. You need to have some convictions on the medium term view of that commodities price. I personally am not convinced that the oil/gas price will exit the year nearly so high as it is now, but if I could predict such things, I wouldn’t be posting it on Reddit. I’d be cruising my diamond coated yacht. Lastly I’ll leave you with three picks that hopefully won’t get me banned. EPM, SPH, and EGY. These are not high conviction endorsements, but I feel these, while exposed to commodity risk like the rest of the industry, might be a bit undervalued. Oil is a dangerous play though, IMHO. Don’t yolo. Do you own DD as it’s probable there’s better picks out there than these. Im personally out of energy because I don’t think the current price is sustainable and the geopolitical environment might collapse price wise.

I definitely did not have China covid lockdown oil dump on my radar for this one...Brutal. I'm trimming April but leaving a little on the table. Took a big L on those. For now I'll keep the money focused on the July opex and commons. EGY still poised to do well even if oil gives back another 10-20% on top of the existing drop. Rapid economic downturn is the main threat at this stage. The supply story of the next 6 months doesn't justify <$100 oil prices unless demand tanks with it.

Just wanted to post my thoughts on EGY earnings (note I own shares). This is a small oil & gas company, just $189m market cap (current price = 3.24). What makes them desirable is they have $50m of cash and no debt, so EV is under $140m. This quarter they made $31m, after adjustments for a tax-benefit $23m. Their operating income was $20m. If we annualize the operating income (and if oil prices stay elevated it’ll be even more as hedges roll off), that is $80m and their EV is $137m. That is an earnings yield of 58%!!! IMO, their stock should be in the $6 to $7 range, at the very lowest, Honestly, a reasonable multiple given they are growing production and are debt-free should be 5x EBITDA => their EV should be $400m, not $137m. So actually pushing $10 pps. They have also started a 4% dividend, beginning in Q1.

I'm not going to pretend to understand the Brent price factors other than supply and demand....so I'll do my best to explain the small sliver of understanding that I have. Brent is one of the two benchmark crude markets that drives the ppb of crude - West Texas Intermediate is the other. When Brent and/or WTI futures are going up, the other crude prices go up too. When I started looking at $EGY, I looked at their last year prices and compared them to the Brent prices. They have both followed a very similar climb as the world has come out of the pandemic (of course, as I type this $EGY is freefalling). That's my ELI5, but keep in mind that I'm operating on about a 3rd grade level myself, so it's basically an 8yr old explaining to a 5yr old. If I'm wrong on any of this, again very possible, and someone here can correct me, please do. I'm learning, so I'll take any corrections or further knowledge that anyone can share.
