> the US still hasn’t even tried rolling it out Well, they tried. My card has a PIN, but almost no merchants are set up to use it. I assume that is because of consumer resistance, but I don't really know.
Yes. The interchange fees charged for processing are incredibly high and don’t get cheaper as a percentage if the dollar amount rises. So if a person spends $10 with a regular card the fee will be $0.20, a black card with perks closer to $0.30. Now do a $10000 transaction - $200 fee for regular and $300 for a black card. It’s ridiculous they scale the fees this way as they aren’t directly taking any additional risk on the transaction these day and the transaction is exactly the same amount of network resources to complete. At one time in history, before instant verification, PIN pads, CVV codes as security features etc, it may have been justifiable to take these fees as there were a lot more scams and the networks were liable for that. But now all of that risk is pushed off to the issuing bank OR the fees for unverified transactions are through the roof and upwards of 5%. Visa and MC used to have a scale and technology moat but those barriers are pretty easy to leap over for a determined population.
I am from Brazil where we have chip & pin and still have a ton of fraud. A family member had her debit card and PIN number cloned and lost 4,000 dollars.
Wouldnt take my password yesterday and asked for a PIN. I don’t even know what the f that is
That's my default PIN, but for god's sake keep that to yourself
Yikes, seems like you’ve already had enough of the EPC Kool Aid! When Durbin passed, the banks said free checking accounts would disappear, along with debit rewards. I still have a free checking account, and I also have debit rewards with a bank that is covered by Durbin and would be covered by CCCA. [Southwest](https://www.southwestdebit.com/) and [United](https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/products/united-debit-card.html) also just announced their own debit card rewards programs. A literal Google search would show that debit card rewards programs [still very much exist](https://www.stash.com/learn/debit-card-rewards/#9-best-debit-cards-for-rewards-in-2025). Indeed you are right, routing over more cost-effective (and more secure) networks would cause [one of the most profitable industries in the U.S. economy](https://www.venasolutions.com/blog/average-profit-margin-by-industry) to make slightly less on interchange because they would have to compete with other independent networks to process payments. But forcing V/MA to compete with other networks would not eliminate banks’ rewards programs – in 2022, U.S. banks paid out [$41.1 billion](https://files.consumerfinance.gov/f/documents/cfpb_consumer-credit-card-market-report_2023.pdf) in credit card rewards but collected [$125 billion](https://files.consumerfinance.gov/f/documents/cfpb_consumer-credit-card-market-report_2023.pdf) in credit card interest and fees from consumers as well as [$160 billion](https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/R48216) in swipe fees from merchants. In 2024, the Nilson Report stated that FIs collected over $187 billion in interchange fees... seems to me there's a bit of wiggle room there. You also have identified the most significant problem with the broken U.S. payments system and why it needs reform – as you note, V and MA "set" (AKA centrally price-fix) interchange fees on behalf of the hundreds of banks that issues their cards, meaning that the interchange fees issuers charge are completely insulated from competitive market forces. This is why we have some of the highest interchange rates in the world. Europe, Canada and Australia have all capped interchange fees to a fraction of what we pay (and still have rewards to boot), but as a reminder, the CCCA would NOT cap anyone's fees :) Finally, CCCA allows the covered card issuer to choose the alternative card network they put onto the card, of which there are about a dozen (“Joe’s network or whatever” is not one – notable examples include Star, NYCE and Shazam). According to the Federal Reserve, these independent, PIN-based (or single message) networks have [far less fraud](https://www.kansascityfed.org/research/payments-system-research-briefings/card-not-present-fraud-rates-in-the-united-states-after-the-migration-to-chip-cards/) than V/MA (or dual message) debit transactions. And, when Durbin passed, it was the first time that real security innovations were introduced into the U.S. debit market – for instance, Europe (where V/MA definitely operate) [transitioned to EMV cards](https://www.bankinfosecurity.com/advice-for-us-how-to-speed-emv-rollout-a-8552) long before the U.S. This is because V/MA as dominant market forces in the U.S. had no incentive to provide greater security measures until they were forced to compete under Durbin. Capitalism and competition is supposed to breed innovation, right?? Hopefully some of these receipts help shed a bit of light on how the U.S. payments system actually works for you!

You should have absolutely got an identity pin. I had the same thing happen to me like 5 years ago. Someone stole and cashed my refund check. I got the money, but now every year the IRS sends me an identity PIN I need to use every time I file taxes.
Comcast is widely hated. Any competition at all can wipe them out. I dropped them the instant i could have muni fiber. They made cancelling as difficult as possible - the account was in my dads name and i had a death certificate but that wasnt good enough. I needed to cast 'speak with the dead' to get his fucking PIN. I have gig up/down services rn and they sued the city to try and stop it, as if theyd ever provide good speeds. They still call me and try and sell me some weird 5g internet thing, at a massive discount. Its plainly clear the plan is to sucker people in and gouge them with fees and price raises. I know the market != morality, its about making money. But there is a certain discount at being so hated, that your customers will drop you as soon as an alternative comes.
lol who knows, it’s insanely hard to predict, they don’t just care about numbers, lots of potential candidates. APP, CVNA, Reddit, PIN, right now, with 2 crypto stocks in there, unlikely they’ll add a 3rd any time soon, they’ll probably diversify it
Study up on PIN risk. American Style options are subject to PIN risk.
European Style have no PIN risk unlike American style options. New options trader better learn that up front before they dive into options trading. Rather than provide a screed on what does PINnning mean, for the Noob reading this, google it or put it into a LLM like Perplexity for a complete run down.
I have shared the password to my HBO max profile with dozens of people and told them to use any profile except Steve. If they click on Steve, they will be taken to locked Kid's Profile set to TV-G, from which they can not exit without obtaining a PIN number from me, which I entered without looking and have no way of ever remembering. I do this to feel something while my gf is traveling.

# Robinhood on R no longer works? I recently have been trying to use the Robinhood package (1.7) on R to get historical options data. I signed up for Robinhood because you have to link your account but then it asked me for an MFA code which I can't get because Robinhood doesn't allow third party MFA apps. I tried making a PIN code as my second authentication but that didn't work either for the MFA code. I also tried using an older version of the package (1.2.1) but my login isn't working. Anyone have a trick to use another version of the Robinhood package, or any free programs to get historical options data? (Just looking for stock indexes and crypto futures on the major coins.)
Not to mention PIN risk if you hold the condor up to exp. Always close you condors before expiration even if the trade is profitable whereby the underlying is between the short strikes. The actual gain (Credit spread) may actually be less if the option have big bid/ask spreads and you seek to flatten the trade ahead of expiration.
**OSRS KARMA** GET RID OF THE PIN, it's disrupting my **FEED** 🤡

very different actually, apple is a private company whereas most of china's AI programs are government based. The chinese government is not a good ally - [https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-64206950](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-64206950) whereas Apple refuses (or has in the past) to unlock phones for the FBI, like the shooting in California where Apple refused to give the PIN number of the shooter's phone to the government. I'd take Apple over China if I had to choose
guys it’s been so long but… PIN THE HOTLINE
PIN THE DAILY DISCUSSION THREAD MODS
PINs generated from authentication keys are only good for a short amount of time, like 1 minute. That's what makes them secure. Password complexity was only a security solution because the password is good forever, which means bad actors have time to brute force passwords. Complex passwords make it more difficult for brute force attacks. It's not possible (at least with today's tech) to brute force a generated PIN in the time that it would be usable.
If on a smartcard or physical authenticator, you'll have to use one of your backup devices. If stored on a phone, Google/Apple stores them with your account, which you sign into with another method (different signed-in device, username and password and 2fa, etc.). If stored in a password manager, it'll be in there once you sign in to the password manager on another device. My first comment didn't account for phones and password managers. In the password manager scenario, the manager generates the passkey, so that's where your PIN gets entered. For phones, the passkey isn't 100% hardware bound since it gets synced between devices.
Same here, I don't get it either. They say a passkey is either fingerprint ID, face recog, or a PIN. I can see how the first two are better, but the last one is just a password. If Microsoft is as shady as I think they are, I'd say that they're eventually going to remove PIN as one of the available passkeys. Then they'd have 2 advantages: 1. They'll have every user's fingerprint or face scan 2. They'll be able to sell hardware specifically related to fingerprint scanning.
The PIN never leaves the device, so there's no risk of it being stored in plaintext and leaked out for attackers to try on different websites. Even if you were to share it, the PIN is also entirely useless without the device that generated the key.
PIN Codes are just weak passwords due to only being numbers. Also, since fixed length PINs are widely used on mobile devices, it follows many users would use the same PIN for Microsoft meaning attackers would focus on 6 digit numbers, giving 1 Million possible PINs compared to 2.2 Trillion possible combinations for an 8 character password.
Can everyone stop pretending like a PIN is different from a password? A PIN is quite literally a less secure version of a password because it only contains numbers..
I also had trouble finding a more direct definition and explanation. Scroll down the page here til you see the video "Passkeys explained in under four minutes": https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/business/security-101/what-is-passkey . Basically the security is in possessing a private cryptographic key stored on your physical device. So the end user experience is as you mentioned "log in using face, fingerprint or a PIN" AND having physical possession of the device where the private key is stored.
Someone tell me how a passkey PIN is safer than a password?
I actually read the article but it doesn't way. I googled it and Microsoft says it's a way to log in using face, fingerprint or a PIN...?
Do not place funds in any account that can be accessed on line = empty sooner or later. If you want to buy/sell online, create a separate account, that is funded by a bank loop, so you add €500 at the bank = then use for food/stuff day by day. If you get hacked = all they can get is that €500. Hopefully, read about 2 factor authentication and get your phone locked with a 6-8 digit PIN so no body can human engineer a sim card hack to grab the 2 factor code and change emails etc - read up about SIM hacking and protect your self.
nobody fucking uses PIN lmao easiest play of my life
My mom just did that on a $500 southwest gift card and when she scratched the back the PIN number came off and now no one will let her use it.
Yea, lol. I’d assume so too but not familiar with details. Always tough to make assumptions about situations where people are making moronic decisions - mask or no mask. It’s definitely a defense though. Unless they can prove it was the account owner withdrawing the money, he could simply say his PIN was breached.
That's easy to disprove: - Can you describe the thieves? - How did they learn your PIN number? - Oh look, we have video recording from ATM and this person really does look like you. Coincidence?
> It's hard to do this without both parties knowing each other since you need the account details to perform this kinda of fraud You just need the 4 digit PIN
> There is no doubt about what went down Yes there is because you don't know **WHO** made the phony check and **WHO** deposited it. A smart scammer / thief would use someone else's account details. The only thing that stood in their way ... Would be a 4 digit PIN. That's it. Literally nothing else. If someone had your 4 digit PIN during this time period that the glitch was occurring, they could have walked up in a mask and hood, used your account to deposit a phony check, and withdrawn the funds.
Durbin already did that. Debit cards already support 2 networks so merchants can choose the better rate. PIN less debit is just getting off the ground though so you can't use those debit only networks on card not present transactions.
Yep, and don't forget your PIN number for it!
I got in as well. Return must be 120% now. Most of this sub didn’t get in so they are just butthurt. It’s the same people who laughed at the $34 offering, laughed at the days post IPO.. said it would be shorted, etc. These same folks are quiet today and likely ignore anything RDDT. Crazy part is it’s still early af at $78 lol. It’s STILL cheaper than SNAP and PIN. NUTS.

> payments infrastructure in the US has so much catching up to do at the moment If my VISA or AMEX card credentials get leaked and someone performs unauthorized transaction, I can initiate reversal of all unauthorized payments immediately (and it is investigated later). Note that this money is that of bank. I can lock the card immediately and have new card shipped overnight. Whole process takes 30 seconds. For UPI, reversal of unauthorized transaction are bank initiated. So you have to contact the bank to first start the investigation, and then the payments are reverted later. Note that this is my money, so if I was in need of my money immediately, a bit of an issue. Also, if your aadhar gets leaked, it is basically game over. That is US equivalent of using SSN to access individual credit card (both Aadhar and SSN have dogshit security infrastructure). So just resetting PIN to prevent future unauthorized transaction is somewhat unreliable. So to say India is ahead and US is behind is somewhat deceptive. There are many fintechs coming up with distributed ledger, so it will have penetration if it is useful in current environemnt.
