As an aside (I know I should do this in my IRA, not my PTA, but I have my roth in one brokerage and my trad in another), I’d lose a ton of money if I ever got assigned because of the tax implications. I’m better off rolling than ever risking getting assigned.

Prop 13 is a disaster, it starves the state budget, forcing high income taxes, and schools near wealthy areas have to make up budget shortfalls by begging for PTA donations. It’s absurd. And it forces all the new homeowners, who are generally younger, to subsidize the older folks who have had their whole lives to accumulate assets. And it decreases the liquidity of the property market. And encourages rampant NIMBYism, exacerbating the housing shortage. It’s one of California’s worst laws.

Those on govt assistance are pretty much capped/limited on what they can consume so the ones losing money for them are rich fat people. If you go to church functions, soccer games, school plays, PTA stuff the amount of junk food there is obscene. There's also a knock on effect, one obese person gets on it, loses weight, their friends find out and also get on it. Then as a group they eat less. Studies show the main reason people fail diets and/or caloric restrictions is due to their social circle fostering a setting where there's increased calorie consumption. If you have kids you probably seen some of it. Fat soccer mom friend groups suddenly losing weight as a group recently.

It's 3 trades in a rolling 5 day period. Not 3 trades a year. There's ways around that also. You can open 3 accounts with 3 different brokers and that will give you 9 trading days, You can also trade with a cash account but have to wait until the settled funds clear which is 2 days. Or you could use an offshore brokerage company who's rules don't apply to the PTA rule.

My kids classmates parents think I’m poor because we drive old Toyotas and fords, so we are not expected to host parties or lead PTA shenanigans. Win, win.
in order to build a house you first need what? water/sewer/electric and a nice flat place to put it that properly drains any storm water to the proper place (ie not your neighbors garage). vast majority of your run of the mill stick frame builders don't mess with franchise/public utilities outside of simply tapping a line. if you are any amount of feet away from immediate access to these things, off sites are a real bitch. that sort of lot definitely exist if you want to pay a premium for a single quarter acre pad somewhere in suburbia. you surely could find one and have your home built by a smaller shop that does one off homes. if you want to design your own - cost goes up 25%. if you want to pick from one of their 10 pre-designed templates - cost is only 10-15% more than a spec built home. youll be dealing with everything you can think of under the sun. issues that crop up during construction, change orders asking for more money, them telling you they cant do it how you want it done for the price they initially said. all these things are great experience and everything but a major PTA for your average person who is presumably working full time and living elsewhere while still making monthly payments to the contractor for work in progress. so youre essentially making 2 monthly payments for living arrangement during the time your house is being built - run of the mill 2k sf home probably takes 6-18 months really all depending on the builder and other outside factors. long story short - if you literally want to buy the land, hire the contractor, have all the dirt work done, design the home, supervise the construction, and all that comes with these things - you are looking at something like a 40% premium to your run of the mill spec home that is done by... say DR Horton or Lennar or something similar. plus time, plus essentially double mortgage payments. it sounds great in theory. in reality - there is a reason these guys do these spec homes so efficiently. are there shitty shops out there that cut corners? definitely. can you do it better yourself? 99% chance the answer is no.

Happy Cake Day. My wife insisted on being a stay st home mom. Original plan was for her to return to the office when the kids were all in school, but then she started volunteering in PTA and realized she enjoyed being home for the kids more than sitting in a cubicle pushing reports around. So hats off to you, whether you return to office or not. Stay at home parents are fantastic, I admire my wife tremendously.
Is it great? Actually yeah, its pretty impressive. Practical and useful... eh... 3.3/5. Bitcoin is pretty cool and does have a place in the world but just not what it was originally intended to be. "Store of value" or "digital gold" is really all Bitcoin can do. What was originally intended to be a peer to peer decentralized method of exchange quickly became... something else entirely. I'm not a Bitcoin hater, and I'm not saying it has no place... but I am saying it is being surpassed by better/more advanced blockchains. However, there is so much money and manipulatable interests in BTC, this space isn't allowed to show its true competitive nature. Although BTC "can" be used as a currency for regular transactions... its not the best or most cost effective per se. But there are technologies that fit this role quite perfectly... adoption, security, regulation, and stability are the real issues. Business are scared to adopt crypto transactions... buyers of crypto are susceptible to security hacks... regulation is a PTA because some jackhole agencies try to overstep their scope (ahem\* SEC)... we wont see the space truly shine. It WILL shine in its full capacity but it will also take years to do so. Right now, its the wild west.
