If it’s rapidly rising, the stop loss doesn’t trigger. It follows the stock up until it drops by whatever percentage I set and locks in my gains. States another way it stops my loss once the stock peaks and starts to fall. I don’t day trade but I do try to enter every trade with a purpose and exit plan and TSL is just one strategy.

Thanks. I’m already seeing positions waving farewell. And I’m ok with it. I don’t know which way the war will go or the US economy or oil or gold/silver/copper. So, I’m better off stepping out and learning a bit more about which way things are headed. If I’d had much more certainty, I would have made it a 7% or a 10% TSL.

>Anyone have strong feelings about TSL when so many stocks are within whisper distance of all time highs This is such poor sentiment. If you picked a "winning" stock, then by defintion it continuously sets new all time highs. How did AAPL GOOLG NVDA get to $3b+ market cap? They had to first get past $100/250/800b then $1/2/3t. I've actually held AAPL and NVDA through a period of over 50% decline. GOOGL was close but I don't think quite 50% (2021-2022). If you don't have high conviction on your stocks, you aren't buying the right stocks (bail on a small dip?). Even if you just did SP500 it is continuosly setting new all time highs in the long run.

r/stocksSee Comment

So, the thing that stop losses do is sell low. If you've got a thing that you want to hold, and you put a tight TSL on it "for safety", odds are what will happen is the market dips, triggers your stop loss, and then the stock rips back up without you. Now you're out some gains AND you feel stupid. There are really only two good scenarios for TSL IMO: 1. You want to sell anyway, and soon. You could sell NOW, but you think it's going to keep going up for a while. You're just not sure where it'll stop. Set a really tight TSL, 1-2% or so, and blow your asset a kiss, cause it's gone. Might be next hour, or next day, but eventually the price'll wiggle and you'll be rid of it. 2. The market might crash, or your stock could go to 0, you don't know. You want to hold, but if the big one happens, you'd be willing to risk losing a bunch of value in order to ensure you end up with cash. (Not that stop losses are guaranteed to get you your trigger price in a fast crash, because by the time you sell, no one wants to buy at your stop price.) Set a really wide TSL, up to 50%, and that's your IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, BREAK INVESTMENT. I've heard of day/swing traders using moderate TSLs (e.g. 7%) to "enforce discipline" so they don't keep holding a loser that keeps losing, but I feel like that's a skills issue, or something. There's a tendency to think "oh, but stop losses are smart, because they self-adjust! All you have to do is predict how big the noise will be and set your trail accordingly!" Yeah, good luck with that.

Investing (buy and hold) versus trading (buy and sell, buy and sell, etc.) is fine, IF nothing changes with the company, the economic environment, the world order, or any one of thousands of other things. I buy because of a good track record, solid fundamentals, etc. - but things change - so when I buy, I use TRAILING STOP LOSS PERCENTAGE orders - they are described elsewhere, but setting the trail amount (a percentage) can be a challenge for some folks - there are many, many metrics to use when setting a trail amount, but what I've come to like is using the ATR Bands (the lower band amount) to calculate a percentage and use that for my trail amount percentage. My brokerage (Fidelity) uses these traditionsl TSL% orders, but some brokerages have two-variable TSL% orders, where you specify a percentage-based trail with a trigger price or limit. These platforms (there are only a few of them) allow traders to set a trailing percentage alongside a secondary variable (such as a maximum loss amount or specific activation price) for improved risk management.

Maybe this should be its own post, but thinking about just selling all of them, taking the L and starting over? I have other long-term investments, but outside of those instead of having my cash sit the bank doing nothing, I just throw it into high volume and volatility stocks (usually after some news) on the dips, set a TSL for anywhere after 10-20% gains and scalp. If I’m at a loss, just hold til they recover. Been doing this consistently for a long time, had just set a small tangible limit of making $100/day and could usually get at least double or triple that—even had some major intraday winners—and would use part of it to pay bills and reinvest the rest. Simple enough, not looking for the moon. Except of course a few weeks ago the dips weren’t actually dips, and nothing is recovering, and now all my cash is tied up. I’m tired of waiting and trying to get out of the wash while I’m seeing potential gains I could be making if I could invest in other stocks. At this point I’m thinking of just selling all I have so at least I can take whatever’s left over and make the difference back on other trades. Feel like it would be faster than just sitting here waiting for a recovery that isn’t coming, and I’d still be up overall for the year, but also hate the idea of selling so low.

You should have an option to set a trailing stop loss. You can set it at something like 15-20% which means if the stock drops 15-20% from its all time high(ATH after you set your TSL) it will dump your shares with a market order. Its nice because you can set it and forget it for 90 days, but its risky on something like OPEN because it may drop so fast you end up losing 30-40% instead of 15-20%.

Mentions:#TSL#OPEN

> ... without risking anything at all. Just to clarify, there *is* a corner case where you can eat shit even with a TSL. If you have a Stop Limit, infrequently the price will flash past you and leave your limit unfilled. A Stop Market has the risk of giving you a bad fill (but guarantees that you get out). But yes, managing trades with trailing stops is usually a great idea. Good work.

Hm. I like a nice conspiracy theory as much as the next guy but then again unlike with crypto I don’t see the evidence of whales actively hyping the TSL stock they own themselves deliberately in order to gather more retail plebs to stand in as bag holders. Also, how would they get the timing right? In order to not cause a total sell-off, they’d have to dump their shares slowly over time at a good price and exactly this part of the plan seems to not work out right now with Tesla down 30% vs ATH.

Learn how to hedge or at least keep trailing stop lost % orders on almost everything you have. I say 'almost everything' because you will generally make money if you hold long. For instance, I don't even pay attention to my blue chip stocks like MSFT, IBM, HD, JNJ, ABV, etc. However, I do wrap those TSL% orders around things like AMD, ARM, PLTR, CRWV. That's how come I didn't take a huge beating on liberation day(s). Depending on the stock and the price per share I'll put anywhere from 7.5%, 10%, 12%, or 15% on everything else. If my % gain is higher than my TSL% order if the sell gets triggered I still make $. If I've got something that's only up 3% and -again depending on stock - I'll put a 7.5% TSL% order in and if it gets triggered then my losses are minor. If I've got something that's up 25% I'll put a 10-12% TSL% order on it. If the cost per share is higher, like 120 then I'm comfortable with a 10% TSL because it has to drop $12. On the other hand if I have a $15 stock, I'll put a much higher TSL$ of 20-25% because it's easier to lose a higher percentage like a -$2 move on a $15 stock. With big drops I don't lose as much if any and can buy in at a lower price point, and yes I've had those few stocks that trigger my sell and the next day it rockets back up and I mother fuck my stupidity, but I don't sit around with 40-70% unrealized losses. I play percentages not dollars. $'s cause anxiety, %'s not as bad. I like to average 2-5% daily portfolio gains. That adds up if you can do it several days a week. Makes your yearly ROI beat any CD or BOND. Also, with TSL% orders on my riskier plays, I don't have to watch the market all day. I only have to watch from 8:00 am - 10:00 am, and then just catch the last hour - sometimes will buy or short AH and rarely before the bell because I've been burnt too many times jumping on the pre-marrket pops only to see it disappear within the first few minutes after the opening bell.-

Not completely new to options, but new to trading long options. What are some good ground rules? So far, my rules are. 1. Don't invest anything you're not willing to lose completely. 2. Don't be greedy. Walk away with gains. 50% to 100%+ gains in a day, close out and walk away. 3. Don't hold positions over the weekend. 4. Don't get attached to the money or position. 5. Eventually, don't put more than 10% to 25% into a single positions. Right now my account is only 2k, so I can't go by this rule yet, but hopefully, by the end of next week, I can start to implement that rule, once I get over 10k. 6. Stay away from 0DTE. Preferably anything less than 7DTE. 7. DO NOT TRADE ON MARGIN. I should message my broker to tell them to ban me from approving it 8. Don't forget uncle Sam. Putting away 30%, of my gains to pay the tax man. 9. Do not trade everyday. Only when I see an opportunity. 10. Cut my losses with TSL and don't look back. Currently setting to about 25%. Anything that I'm missing?

In the platform I use, there is a "Trailing stop loss", which logically isn't a stop loss, but a "guarantee profit". You select a range(either % or price) and it moves in one direction if the price moves in that direction. It doesn't change if price moves in the opposite direction. And if price moves in the opposite direction too much, it gets triggered and you take your profit (or small loss if you timed it very bad and got immediately annihilated). Example: NVDA is at 100$. TSL(Trailing stop loss) set at "-5$". Right now it will be triggered at 95$. NVDA is at 110$. TSL moves to 105$. NVDA is at 120$. TSL moves to 115$. NVDA fell to 117$. TSL still at 115$. Nvda rose to 128$. TSL at 123$. As long as NVDA doesn't fall by more than 5$, your profit is locked. I'd say it's purpose is to not bother yourself with checking the price every week/day/hour/minute lol.

It is manipulated by Thiel etc. otherwise Musk would get margin called and liquidated by his banks (most of his wealth is TSL stock and he 100% leveraged that) - why do you think Mango had to do an extra fucking commercial at the white house. NOONE rational is buying the stock in these amounts in this market with this company outlook and this valuation and it is only worth so much to manipulate the whole thing - once they don't or can't or are not willing anymore, the stock will crash more quickly than you can look, as they won't sell in tranches or won't gradually stop buying, but all at once.

This market is to volatile except on bell weather stocks like MSFT, and even then look what just happened. I never look at net unrealized gains as $, only %'s. $ cause anxiety. So when I hook those double, triple baggers, or more I immediately put in trailing stop loss orders, but my formula is based on preserving those gains, not the price of the stock. I set my TSL% to preserve 85%.,, and it's much lower than the 10-20% recommended and so far it works great. If my orders get triggered then great, and puts me into a position of picking it back up cheaper, or not at all. I play just %'s. Sure you can wait on a stock and go long, but really, how often does that payout? It happens but not often and that money languishes unable to be put too use anywhere else.. I've got positions that have yet to trigger, so in that sense I am long term. This is a game and it is rigged against the retail investor, and Wall Street calls us stupid money. Don't look at $'s just %s, never fall in love with a stock. On average my portfolio gains 3%-5% per week. Do the compound interest on that. Start using TSL% orders and you will never go in the hole, an you will always increase your equity. Don't get star gazey over the minute few who pull off a million dollar profit. I'm close to it doing it my way and I haven't had to sit on something for 5+ years hoping. I take my money and run. If volatility slows way down then I might go long. I bought RDDT at the IPO and quickly put a TSL% order on my shares and it has never been triggered. On Monday with the fire sale wh8ile my house was on fire like everyone else's I grabbed VST and ORCL and rode them until they triggered my order. I pulled about $28 a share until my triggers were tripped. They are in my back window now.. Examples like that. Heck, I picked up 1111000 shares of PLTR on Friday. You can bet your ass I put a TSL% order on that only to preserve my gains. If it gets triggered who cares.

Also look up loss harvesting.. but sounds like this won't benefit you enough. I also use trailing stop loss to allow the market to "decide" my exit..(or trim positions)like PLUG shot up 10x a few years ago. I set the TSL at 3%. I knew it would fall but I wanted to protect most of the gains. Made 3k. Typically I aim for a certain percentage of gains before doing this.

Mentions:#PLUG#TSL

I've posted this is many different places, but I may as well post it again. When swing trading (NOT position trading), I do the following: - For sizing, I never invest more than 10% of my port into a single stock. Ill have large positions in ETFs, but not individual stocks. - As soon as I buy, I immediately put a stop loss order at 25% below my cost. My stop loss never goes below this number In effect, this limits my loss to 2.5% or my portfolio on any one trade. - once a trade is +15%, I remove the existing stop loss and create a -10% trailing stop loss (TSL). This guarantees me a profit while still allowing the stock to move. -if a trade climbs to +50%, I sell half and allow the other half to run until the SL is triggered -if a trade moves sideways between +15% and +50%, within a tightening range, for a week or more, I move the TSL to -5% and basically ignore it. I'll only manually sell these stocks if something much more juicy comes along and I need the liquid capital, or the rare situation at the end of the year where I need to realize some gains to avoid wasting realized losses for tax purposes. For example, I currently hold 6 different trades that are all sitting between +15% and +50%. I'm +18% overall this year, but if I hypothetically were -5%, I would sell enough stock at a gain to offset those losses. It's the only time you can get "tax free" income.

You’re going to hear a lot of VTI and VOO and SCHD. That stuff is all great but it’s very slow money. Compared to individual stocks and being more risky with leverage ETF’s like NVDL or TSL. There’s so many different paths to investing. Most people can’t day trade or swing trade so they just long term invest. Most can’t pick decent companies or understand what they’re doing. Then they recommend the same to others and make it seem like they can’t start anywhere different than simple ETF’s. Before getting into the market I read for years. Watched and observed. Sometimes reading as much as 12 hours a day and not sleeping. Just to learn market movement and watch everything play out in real life. I’d paper trade on TOS. I sunk about the same amount you did into the market and did a little of everything except for playing options. Which I still don’t do. I fell into playing around and eventually seriously day trading soxl and soxs. As well as TQQQ and SQQQ. I then graduated on to a few more securities I learned and felt comfortable to do so with. There’s days I make $500-750 doing that in less than 10 minutes. Discipline is everything though, sometimes you think “well that was kind of easy”. Try it again and lose $500-750. Then emotion can take over and you jump in on action moving sideways, versus analyzing your next trade setup before entering off emotion. Sometimes you buy stocks before earnings and they shoot up, or they go down. So many different kinds of plays at the end of the day. Learn how to chart and use indicators. Find what works for you. The market is like an ever going carousel. One has to feel comfortable and just find the right flow when to jump in and how to figure what you want to do. You will lose money and learn from those lessons. In the first 4 months of trading I did all sorts of stuff and found I loved it all. I hit the ground running though and wanted to make this my life. So I do it all. I have my own methods and then sometimes try others and like results and sometimes I don’t. I’m always learning and growing. I realized even the smartest guys who’s been doing this for decades don’t even know it all and get it wrong. It’s not for everyone and each type of investing isn’t for everyone. Just know what you’re doing before pressing buy and sell bottoms. Don’t play options for sometime until extremely comfortable and proven through paper trading. Your goals of what you want to do sounds like somewhat hands off approach. You’re young and those two combined reasons are why you’re going to get a lot of VOO and chill type answers. Which they’re not incorrect if you want slow steady growth and some action in individual stocks without owning them. I still think a balance of individuals and ETF’s as well as always keeping some cash on hand for buying dips and then a small amount for crypto. But only about 5-10%.

haha, I shorted TSL this morning and then realised it's a buy position. Left it like that not to lose money on the spread, thinking it's going to get there eventually... Just gotta fine tune the stop-loss now lol

Understand that prior to TSL I knew nothing about trading. I’ve read that 98% of all options traders lose money. I HAVE NO PROBLEM BELIEVING THIS. To win at trading you need a winning system and the ability to conquer emotion. Even with TSL you have to study hard, work hard, and apply yourself. It is not a get rich quick scheme. There are people on TSL who started after me and are trading 1000 contracts. I am still working to improve my win rate. I’m getting 1% better every day with managing my own emotions, while purging advanced trades that I just am not good at. We have winning students of all ages and walks of life, it can be done but it’s not easy (if it were, a lot more people would be doing this successfully). I am a believer in the system.

Hey, how's the trading going? I'm strongly considering joining TSL right now. After 2 years, would you recommend and why?

100% the truth. TSL is garbage. and once I figured out what it was I had ChatGPT recreate the study in a few hours.
