Options tracking gets messy fast once you add rolls, assignments, multi-leg trades, and stock positions in the same portfolio. For me, the main thing is not just realized/unrealized P&L. I want to see open positions by ticker, breakeven after all trades, what changed after rolls or assignment, and whether the whole position is actually making money. I used spreadsheets before, but after some point it became too much manual work. Now I use Quantwheel because I can see roll history, breakeven, open positions, and portfolio tracking in one place. For rolls, I would not try to hide everything inside one edited row. That usually becomes messy fast, especially with strangles or anything multi-leg. The cleanest way is to track both levels: 1. Each leg as its own row, so the accounting is clean. 2. The whole trade as one campaign, so you do not lose the real story of the position. That's the main problem people have, how to track that and not lose it. If you only log the close and reopen as separate trades, the math is technically fine, but later you lose the bigger question: did this whole campaign make money after all the rolls? If I were building it in Sheets, I would have columns for ticker, strategy, leg, open date, close date, strike, expiry, credit, debit, roll number, parent trade ID, current breakeven, and notes. The parent trade ID is the important part because it lets you group the original trade and all adjustments together. For options, the part most journals miss is that a roll is not just a closed trade plus a new trade. If you treat it that way, you lose the actual story of the position. The questions I want a journal to answer are simple: 1. What is my breakeven price for this ticker after all the trades? 2. How are my CSPs, covered calls, spreads, and long calls/puts performing by ticker? 3. What changed after rolls or assignment? 4. Am I actually making money? Spreadsheets get the job done, but they are not created for that task. They're versatile, but options trade tracking has complexities they don't capture effectively. The big one is roll history. Do you log it as two completely separate trades, or do you link it as one continuous campaign to track the real breakeven?
