Incase of a black swan event happens with EMP involvement, electronic systems will be on down time for a while. Goodluck with btc at that moment. Also gold & silver works better depending on the location on where you are on earth. If you are in Middle East, South America, South East Asia or India, locals favour gold over btc. Wonder these things: 1. If there is already a universal currency which the ancient advanced civilizations have already put in place, which we don't access yet. 2. If the Bitcoin is finite, doesn't that mean, the extent of human civilization advancement is limited to that extent. 3. If all the Bitcoin is taken out with an EMP stored in their individual hard personal wallet, except the very few in those impenetrable bunkers, what use would it be if we can't prove the ownership over it. Or only the one holding is the ultimate dictator over it. 4. And what if the government acquires all of the Bitcoin instead of it being available for the general intended people. Does that mean that people who cannot mine it are going to be underprivileged. Isn't that the same as hard money that is already existing?

**Here's a shitty answer:** Stock Demand = Price goes up = Supply Goes up (More Stock Issuance). Price go down. Dependent on Stock issuer to keep making money, not get ass fucked by regulators, and also dependent on good CEO's/Leadership. Bitcoin Demand = Price goes up = ~~Supply Goes up~~ It's on a fixed schedule(and issued supply gets halved every 4 years making it more scarce) - Dependent on its secure, impenetrable, decentralized network, is considered a commodity (similar to gold), free from regulatory scrutiny and is gaining more adoption(See ETFs), is an asset without an issuer, can be self custodied, requires no middle man to send across the world. If an EMP it the earth, whatever servers the information for your stocks are saved on would be wiped out, as well as your bank. Bitcoin lives on thousands of computers around the world, including several satellites and only needs 1 to run the blockchain. Bitcoin is not about making money, it is money. And your stocks that are tied to the legacy fiat system are susceptible to a fiat system collapse and won't nearly keep up with inevitable hyperinflation. If you need to leave the country, you can't take your stocks, home, gold, or cash with you, Most of these would be seized if the government wanted to seize them. To take your Bitcoin- you only need 12 words you've memorized and you can go anywhere.

So, the only real way there is to "EMP" a large area is to air-burst a nuke in the upper atmosphere. This doesn't EMP "a city" it EMP's most of the satellites in lower orbits (almost anything that's not GPS sats) and depending on how big the boom is you also EMP anything from "an area the size of Europe" to "half the planet". Stuff that's shielded would survive mostly unscathed, but the power grid would require serious repair, as would most computer systems as those are not shielded. It's also likely that anything from the "local" internet to the entire global internet would be rendered non-functional. Local in this case meaning anything hit by the EMP enough to fry systems and cables. If you hit enough infrastructure then even areas not hit by the EMP would probably see their internet disrupted as the system suddenly can't find major infrastructure and route traffic to a degree that it can't "self heal" from and just route around.

I think that in theory, the most that you could get with a single EMP would be roughly half, ie. the parts visible to the EMP. The shadow of the earth would protect the rest of the surface. Of course, how large would an EMP need to be in order to accomplish that? You'd need a HEMP which is at least in the exosphere for the visibility to be sufficient. Of course, you could "effectively" target more than half of the sphere, by picking a point which is above a weighted center average of the earth's population distribution. There's much more land, and far more people living in the northern hemisphere. So perhaps the ideal detonation point would be somewhere above the north pole, probably at least 1000km minimum altitude and perhaps closer to 4,000km. In that scenario, you might be able to wipe out 75% of the existing nodes. But as you've noted, there would be far bigger problems at that point. And bitcoin would still continue to function, although the difficulty level would have to drop significantly after a couple weeks because blocks would be discovered much too slowly for the code's liking.

Any EMP / nuclear / Carrington style event large enough to substantially affect the bitcoin network will also take down all non-hardened infrastructure. Ignoring real world calamities that would occur and just focusing on BTC network security, as infrastructure around the globe slowly comes back online so will the BTC network, that's how its decentralisation works. A single EMP couldn't do much. However if some major natural disaster like a CME took a lot of miners offline and damaged the hardware, Bitcoin could be unable to restart. Although the network could get back online, without enough mining power blocks would be so slow to produce it would basically stop.

Large solar flares are substantially more likely than a EMP. How would it be impacted? Looking for an answer- what are the knock on effects?

Mentions:#EMP

EMP is localized, so it would not affect it. A large solar flare would potentially impact it though

EMP itself would affect the Bitcoin network about the same as lightning strikes do. But the only way to create strong EMP is by detonating nuclear warheads, and *that* will have other, and substantially stronger, effects.

If you’re a student of history you realise how frequently truly unexpected events occur. After the fact, people write books about how it was “clear” to the authors, but no one has a crystal ball. War breaks out. A global virus emerges. China could invade Taiwan. An EMP could take out New York. Someone could discover a Bitcoin exploit. The purpose of portfolio management - and this is what you do with your money when you try to maximise it - is to defend it against these unexpected events. You don’t know when they might occur, so you have to ensure you’re ready for the unexpected. That means putting your money in a range of assets. You have to be ready for any one asset class to get *hammered,* because historically, all asset classes get hammered eventually. People are riding high on Bitcoin’s success (for good reason), but there will come a day when it reaches market equilibrium, like gold. When the number of buyers matches the number of sellers. When that happens, many people holding in the hopes of future gains will rotate out and into other assets, and that will be the end of the gold rush forever. Be ready for that, or a vulnerability, because you don’t know when it will occur.

Internet outages, EMP’s, etc. these could potentially cause major outages for some people and miners alike. Causing them to lose access to their funds for some time. There are some projects working on additional “interconnected networks” that don’t rely on the internet to transmit data, some even using nodes in space and radio waves. I think that’s important for the future resilience of btc. Internet usually doesn’t go out for long periods of time, but I can’t imagine there will never be any outages. So when it does, a lot of people are going to be freaking out if once their funds are seemingly “stuck” for whatever duration. Also those things but I see targeted miner attacks happening on a larger scale as bigger money decides to toy around and manipulate things. Additionally I would say centralized exchanges as they are one of the biggest vulnerabilities to confidence in btc but are necessary to on-ramp funds into btc. I remember some projects working on an automated/decentralized bank wire transfer that would automatically purchase and send crypto to a specific address, even something like that could help diversify our dependency on centralized exchanges.

I will give you the most plausible in my view - a sudden drop in processing power that means the next block takes a massively long time to be mined, effectively halting the network. So for example, a place with a large majority proprtion of processing power suddenly siezing all miners, or a solar flare/EMP destroying a large portion of miners. The network would take time to readjust difficulty and in the meanwhile it would be paralysed. Because most processing is supplied by ASICs it cant be solved by just switching processing to standard desktops, it needs a similar amount of processing power to be re-acquired. That's more likely than a 51% attack or quantum computing or random mcguffin. Of course, in a situation with a solar flare or the likes, a lot of other infrastructure will also be totally fecked.

Mentions:#EMP

Or EMP attack. Whatever black swan is unimportant

Mentions:#EMP

I've always felt it was backed by a lot of things but mainly the transactional network is where it gets its worth. It's backed by SHA256, considered a very secure encryption. It's value is backed by it's set scarcity, making it more valuable than gold one day, yet more gold can be found and money can be overprinted. It's backed by the blockchain concept, only one miner has to survive to regrow the transactional network, an EMP blast can then be survived. The same could not be said about the banking system, if an EMP hit then they would probably destroy evidence as it acts as a smokescreen to steal everyone's money.

Mentions:#SHA#EMP

Quantum computing could be an issue, large solar flare, nuclear EMP's or some other black swan event could happen.

Doesn't matter if they EMP the cold wallets, just make sure you can access your seed phrase, then recreate the wallet on another device.

Mentions:#EMP

Thanks for looking into it. I wonder if a normal safe would protect it from EMP's.

Mentions:#EMP

After a little research it seems the answer is… maybe. Obviously your seed phrase in paper or steel would be unaffected, but it looks like it would depend on proximity to the burst and if it’s connected to power at the time. An EMP disrupts or destroys electronics by creating a short between the circuits. So it depends on a lot of factors. I think there’s a product idea here that would sell. EMP shields for the popular cold storage wallets.

Mentions:#EMP

Yeah you're right, that's the concern is that people won't value it in the future. Also I wonder what if we had like a worldwide EMP from the sun or something (ie. from a solar flare or something). Also you're right people from Laos could buy gold or something. I guess the benefit to BTC/crypto is that it's more complicated and so theoretically harder to steal (yes there's still $5 wrench attack, but it's still more complicated than grabbing gold from the house and running, and of course gotta protect form hackers). We are in a price discovery phase I think and that's why it's so volatile, and the future isn't certain, giving it a lot of risk too!

Mentions:#EMP#BTC

EMP wouldn’t even kill Bitcoin since you can actually run it with pen and paper

Mentions:#EMP

Any EMP attack destroys our way of life and would wipe out the money I have in my 401k too. I’ll have bigger issues than Bitcoin or money at that point.

Mentions:#EMP

There are three things in my mind that are true vulnerabilities, number one and yes this is extreme but any sort of EMP attack or solar flare would halt all BTC transactions, cold wallets are key for this. Next is Bitcoin malleability, it's a real thing, and hasn't happened in awhile, part of the mt gox loss was due to malleability. And third would be somehow a true breaking of the sha-256 hash, but even this, btc uses proof of work, it would just require the actual encryption to use a modified version of SHA, there's been SHA-1, 2, etc all have been broken as computers have gotten faster, essentially getting two random values to collide

If an electromagnetic pulse powerful enough to completely wipe out the entire world’s replication of the Bitcoin timechain simultaneously on every medium that it’s stored on, then Bitcoin would definitionally cease to exist. However an EMP that powerful would also set us back to the point where money is a useless concept anyway. The world is screwed as all logistics systems, monetary systems, communication systems and so on are equally destroyed along with Bitcoin. In that case, you should probably stock up on canned food and ammunition rather than worry about how money works.

That’s my opinion yes at least for the next decade. Today it’s still viewed by the majority, including most HODLers, as a speculative asset so it will be subject to major price swings. I think eventually one its price becomes more stable and could see wider spread adoption as an actual store of wealth… but if the price was stable most HODLers wouldn’t want it. They’re mostly in it for the yacht, which you can’t buy if the price is stable and you have no expectation of 100x price increases. Once it achieves relative price stability I think it stops being digital silver and truly become digital gold, acting as a wealth preserver over the long term (unless there is an EMP that wipes out all digital things). I do think new ATHs will be realized in the next decade. But it’s going to be volatile and not going to hit new ATHs and sit there until the next one. It’ll pump and dump to increasingly higher highs, but the danger is life happens and you need to convert BTc to fiat when it’s in a post dump period.

The only difference is that gold has an inherent and historical value that has been recognized for millenial by all societies univeraally, and when all of civilization collapses or government fall, gold will still be gold. If there's a global power crisis or a solar EMP that wipes out all technology, Crypto will be gone, while gold will remain. That said, his heart is in the right place. As long as there's tech to back it, Crypto does have value as a secure method of storing value, separate from government entities.

The gap between rebuilding and recovering would surely disrupt the law and order systems that you think will "save the day ". The the same lead bullets you think will restore order, will be leveraged by the hungry/less accomplished to rebalance their station in life. Sure, society(s) will be reestablished, eventually, but don't think for a minute that the heirarchy won't change immensely during the down time. This of course is all postulated on your suggested possibility that there is an EMP powerful enough to impact the entirety of the planet to the degree that BTC is completely wiped out, thus reverting everyone back to a cash only option. Except of course in such a scenario, government(s) will have collapsed in the void of communication/structure/personal interests of employees/resources/legitimacy/anarchy etc. And thus, old cash, backed by lost promises, will have been abandoned for basic tradable goods and services... unless your savings include bullets, whiskey, seeds, medicine dried goods, STEM skills, serious blue collar skills, combat/survival skills etc, bad news, you will be starting over from scratch, or worse, will get overtaken by events before you get a chance to even try.

You only need two nodes for Bitcoin to exist, and for the ledger to be intact. If there is an event that can EMP the entire planet, even the last two nodes, then ALL money will be worthless at that point because society and life as we know it is over. Whomever, if anyone, is still alive, they will live by brute force rules, not money. Everything you value will convey to whatever person or entity has the resources to, and chooses to, impose their will on yours. Money is a civil construct of exchange and worth, the jungle recognizes no such construct.

If it wasn't for fiat currencies and commodities, bitcoin would have nothing to judge it's scarcity and therefore value upon. everyone thinking that fiat or physical commodities can stop being treated as the valuable things they are and that bitcoin would still have value have no understanding of basic reality. You can pay to buy houses with bitcoin because you convert it to the fiat of the nation in which you're buying the property, but without bitcoin a house (a roof over your family's head, warmth and protection from the weather, place to be and relax, to boff your spouse, cook your food, etc,) will still have all the value set by the market in which it exists, which is determined by physical forces, and that will never \*not be\* the case. If someone EMP's all of the electrical infrastructure and your bitcoin goes away, you'll still need a place to keep you and your family from freezing to death in the winter. As long as reality exists, this will remain a fact.

Honest question , what happens with bitcoin if a EMP happens?

Mentions:#EMP
r/BitcoinSee Comment

There are many reasons BTC could not realistically become a replacement medium of exchange or currency. But it will continue to be a material asset class. Digital and electronic dependency is simply one feature (or risk if you like) of this particular asset. At some point, it will probably be possible to insure your BTC against this risk if it concerns you, just like you can insure your real estate, jewelry, art, other assets. I don't think there is an asset that is risk proof and BTC is no exception. Personally, I think the bigger risk than EMP is the risk of quantum computing threatening the security of the blockchain, and all forms of cryptography and electronic security for that matter. I would hope when that day comes, we will have evolved and innovated new security technology within which you can protect digital assets like BTC.

There are steps to shielding tech to this flare though, so not everything would be lost... but it would be chaos, thats for sure.

I don’t disagree with the risk that an internet-based currency or store of value presents. However, like many investments, there is a tacit acceptance that the status quo will be maintained, within some bounds. An EMP that takes out communication, electrical grids, internet etc. to the extent that banks don’t work will almost certainly result in a major disruption of the supply chains for everything. With respect to conventional currency, who will be at the bank in to give me my money the day, week, month after the EMP? Holding a hard, physical asset like gold would make sense in that scenario. So much of what we take for granted (a dollar bill has value) is based on ‘faith’ that tomorrow will be pretty much like today….

My initial question is what is the back up in such an event for Bitcoin. There is no answer. So this is the main objective, answer how Bitcoin or blockchains can protect itself against that. Also I hold gold directly. Not a lot. No one in here needs more than an gold bar or two to cover their own net worth so it's pretty feasible, it's been done before. I don't believe an EMP attack will completely derail our society, but it is enough to make people lose faith in crypto if everyone's money is on crypto yet they have no access. Because traditional banks still store value in physical form, an EMP doesn't shut down our financial system entirely. It halters but business can continue. The purpose of Gold is this, therefore it is very easy to return to this even without electricity. Again the scenario itself isn't the focus, it's what blockchains back up in an all digital world, if electronics faltered? I'm not arguing that previous systems are better. I'm trying to get everyone to think on the major flaw of BTC so to be aware. If we can answer this question then it becomes even more apparent that blockchains are better than traditional financial systems.

Some thoughts/questions. Do you think that any paper backups that banks might have will be meaningful in the event of a significant EMP attack? An effective EMP attack would likely set back our society to a point where barter would become the primary method of exchange, bank records and ‘belief’ in a paper -backed system of economics won’t be very useful. If the EMP attack was of a lesser impact, bitcoin and banks would both likely survive Gold has been a store of value, but it would only be useful if you hold the metal. What percentage of gold owners actually directly hold the metal? I can see the argument for directly holding gold for an EMP scenario, but you also have to be able to protect it…. In a post-apocalyptic world, that could be challenging. I have also thought about the EMP scenario impact and if we experience a meaningful disruption of the electrical and transportation systems, most of us won’t be worrying about our portfolio value/ future value, we will be focused on trying not to starve or have whatever we own being taken from us by others. The veneer of civilization is very very thin.

I'm not assuming, I work at a bank. It is 100% more secure in the scenario given. The bank back up is more secure because they have a plan for this exact scenario. Yes physical copies can be destroyed but banks use physical and digital. I'm not saying the system is perfect. I'm pointing out the main flaw for me in BTC and how there is no plan for that. Again I believe in the advantages of Crypto but too many people on here don't think of the disadvantages when they speak on everyone adopting it. Society doesn't have to collapse for that scenario. The Sun emits solar flares which causes natural EMP so it could happen without collapsing society or nuclear war.

This is actually incorrect. Gold was the main form of value until the 70s. It worked just fine until the US govt decided they wanted to make more money. I do suggest holding Gold and bullions. You're saying that you will turn down gold if i offered you some right now? It's not worthless because if a catastrophic event did happen, things don't just descend into chaos. There are back up plans for all this. Gold is part of that. The scenario I used is to illustrate the main flaw of BTC. If everyone goes to digital currency and I want to bankrupt the world then I guess I just have to denote an EMP and everyone essentially goes broke. I'm detailing to you the main problem of BTC. Not a single person here has given a legitimate way that BTC is safe in this scenario. So in the long run how will it be more viable? Again I am all for BTC. I am playing devil's advocate because these are things traditional finance plans for, but crypto people haven't. It shows the maturity of a financial system and why people are still willing to use it. If we can answer the main problem of BTC or blockchains then we have more momentum for it to be the main financial system.

I'm not saying they don't. I'm saying how you do make Bitcoin the primary form of payment when not everyone has the same access to the Internet or electricity. Also how is this completely electronic system safe from Solar Flares or EMPs? Here's a scenario, how is Bitcoin safe from nuclear destruction and EMP if all electronics go down? The traditional system of Gold will still be effective in this scenario. Bitcoin will not.

I understand and own crypto. I also work in a bank so I understand traditional finance. Now can someone here explain how Bitcoin will work if electronics get hit with an EMP or something that shuts off electronics? Is Bitcoin really the best and safest when that is the easiest way to collapse it? Also how is someone in Africa supposed to buy Bitcoin if they lack the resources for a Computer, Phone, and Electricity, let alone the fiat to purchase a coin? These questions I still don't see answered in a way that can secretly replace fiat currency still.

I agree Cardano need to get a stable coin that everyone uses on there. They have USDM coming soon which might stir things up. I think I read somewhere that because they use eUTXO it made issuing certain stable coins harder. Also I think you have to pay $100k+ just to request one of the major stable coins to provide access. Maybe they could use a catalyst fund to pay for that. I disagree on your point that Cardano doesn’t have many good projects though. Just look on taptools.io WMT IAG BOOK NEWM EMP etc

Well I'd argue an EMP wouldn't kill bitcoin. There are backups in EMP proof containers, an EMP is unlikely to completely destroy all electronics world wide; it's generally localized to areas of the globe, that includes solar flares. Value is a human concept so if something happens that destroys all life; then value no longer exists. However that doesn't necessarily mean all value goes to $0.

I am all for mass adoption of BTC, however gold is an extremely important resource in terms of industrial use. As jewelry it might not have a function but it sure does look nice and the fact that it won’t corrode is also a major plus for it in the value department. Obviously in the event of a nuclear war and EMP attacks currency will be the least of our problems but gold will survive and BTC will not.

How about a worldwide electronic outage? Carrington Event or other EMP? How does Bitcoin get valued/exchanged/stored in a world where all/most electronics are fried and there is no Internet? Does it have value if it can't be accessed or transferred?

Effect of EMP is localized not global. SHA256 is not encryption.

outside of an EMP or breaking SHA256 encryption, good luck with that. even if the US government bans it, it would most likely make the price go up at this point.

No. A global solar flare that knocks out all electronics could happen. Or a massive global EMP detonation to kick off world war three.

I certainly wouldn’t advise anyone to dump their life savings into Bitcoin lol. Not diversifying your money is a huge gamble. But most people can’t really afford to lose any amount of money lol. A loss is a loss. It’s their savings. They probably have a steady income as well they use to pay their bills and get through the month. Anything is better then letting your savings rot in a savings account with no gains. You only live this life once. If you don’t take any risks you’ll never get anywhere worth going. This person took a gamble and looking at the numbers, it’s not a bad bet. I think it’s kinda crazy to go all in when bitcoins at 50k+. I’d wait a while and hope to buy a dip. But if Bitcoin just continues to raise they made a better investment then no investment. Unless their country gets hit with an EMP in the near future they’re probably good.

When power and internet comes back online after EMP then BTC will be up and running much earlier than any banking systems. Also if that happened fiat would be worth nothing too, no one would give a crap about pieces of paper or coins, it would be all about food, water, bullets and stuff like that.

Also the war stocks would skyrocket and make crypto losses look like peanuts )

Lots of people don't trust Tangem because you don't have access to the seedphrase (well now you do), but I have their first sets of cards prior to introducing the seedphrase ability and have been using them ever since abandoning Ledger without any problems. To me, it's much more natural to remember a pin code or password than to try and memorize 12 or 24 words. The cards are built using the highest level of security, they are EMP proof, the chip has a 25 year lifespan, can withstand extreme cold (literally there hae been tests done on this), has no screen, USB port, batteries, buttons, or any other electronics parts prone to failure, and is entirely open source. I already have several copies of the APK on several devices for good measure. I honestly don't see what everyone's problem with it is.

Those same "muh EMP" folk must surely know that a preemptive first strike with EMP weapons would be a prelude to a much larger decapitation strike with nuclear weapons (because the side hit with the EMPs will retaliate immediately). The price or existence of Bitcoin under that scenario is going to be the very least of our concerns... If they are worried about solar flares then again, Bitcoin or the price/existance of it will again be very low on the priority list. I don't think people realise just how completely dependant all supply chains, logistics and infrastructure is on the Internet at this point. If the grid goes down nationwide it's basically going to be mad max within a day or two...

It's funny. I think I've got a way to argue absolute scarcity with a person who mumbles the "muh EMP" narrative. Well. Do you know what would happen under the "muh EMP" scenario? Food production would stop. It might not happen all at once, so the increase is rapidly decreasing. But eventually it stops. What happens to the price of food? More people chasing after a smaller supply. Like bitcoin. So the "muh EMP" critique is actually a good segue. "If the power dies food production stops. You die. Everyone like. It'll be 13-year old Zoe that has a pair of scissors and a no nonsense attitude that survives. But on a more positive note, if that doesn't happen, you've just learned an important concept in bitcoins value. Absolute scarcity. Well done. Go you."

Bitcoin is technology. That means: 1) powers that be will find a way to control it, or if they can’t control it, ban and outlaw it outright. Weaken it with laws. 2) large mining centers capable of being taken out via strong EMP, solar flares, other natural disasters 3) prone to incompetence, user error 4) fraud activity from criminals (i.e. SBF) taking advantage of new Bitcoin holders
