Let's assume you sell Google and buy something else. Just assume. What guarantee do you have of choosing a stock that will outperform your google pick? If you lost interest in Google, don't sell it, just keep it in your portfolio and start buying other stocks/indexes with your future income. Having Google in your portfolio is exciting! It wasn't exciting up until now, sure. But in the future it will! You will never be able to think rationally about investing. The only way you will ever be able to invest rationally is by NOT basing your decisions on what you want. You must learn to be boring. If you are bored, get an inexpensive hobby to pass the time (which will give your stock picks time to amuse you later). Did you know that Nvidia and Micron used to be boring stocks for the longest time? (you don't believe me, do you?) Selling stock at a loss is a surefire way to lose money. You don't make money by buying high and selling low. Moon stocks are lottery tickets, not a guaranteed salary. You can't count on lottery tickets to make up for "selling at a loss". Don't turn investing into a hobby. And if you do, DON'T SELL AT A LOSS. Just be way more cautious about what you choose invest with your future money. You should sell at a win, have an emergency fund, and buy more good companies. You made a good decision, now go play videogames (or hobby of choice) instead of destroying the good decision you made. DON was to help provide some hedge against inflation over the long term and SCHY some protection against a domestic downturn. Maybe if I had thought about it more I would have realized that my small holdings don't really move any needles in any direction and at my age they weren't really logical positions. I need to think deeper about whether or not that's not what I'm doing - checking a box and scratching an itch - with DON. And I can say right now that DON doesn't pass the test. If it were to underperform SCHD and VOO for years I would question why I'm owning it. And not just DON, but I also hold a 5% position in SCHY with plans to build that up as well, but the thought of bringing it to 30% (the Fidelity recommendation) is really difficult for me to accept. And it also fails the future performance test. Thanks again!

So youre asking the right question. Not whether DON is bad. Whether it solves a real problem SCHD plus VOO doesnt already handle cleanly enough. Mid caps can add a different slice of the market. The question is whether that slice gives you enough extra behavior to justify drag, volatility, tax friction & complexity. In retirement that matters more because youre not just chasing total return. Youre protecting sequence risk, income comfort & the ability to sell without hating the price. If DON already feels like a compromise before you buy it, respect that. A 7% to 10% position isnt huge but small positions still have to earn their chair. Diversification isnt automatically better just because another box got checked. The cleaner test is this. if the position underperforms SCHD plus VOO for years, would you still understand why you own it. If the answer is no then you probably dont have a portfolio need. You have an allocation itch. For a retiree who already likes steady & boring, SCHD plus VOO may be the simpler answer unless you can explain exactly what mid caps are supposed to do for the account that the current mix is missing.

If SCHD already fills the steady, boring income role you want, I would not add DON unless you have a clear reason beyond wanting every box ticked. A 7 to 10 percent mid-cap sleeve is perfectly fine if it helps diversification, but it is not mandatory, especially in retirement when simplicity, tax efficiency, and knowing what each holding is doing matter more. I’d think of mid-caps as an optional small sleeve, not something that has to justify itself by beating SCHD or VOO on its own.

Just seems like an uphill battle given 1) they rely on SpaceX for launch (so spaceX has a cost advantage there), and 2) SpaceX IPOing at $2T+ gives them so much more capital to scale. Plus SpaceX benefits from massive economies of scale by leveraging commonality of parts from the terrestrial Starlink internet satellite production which they're launching thousands of every year. So SpaceX should have a cost advantage there as well.

Lastly, the ASTS stats are the largest ever phased arrays in LEO, they are much stronger than any individual starlink sat, so its apples to oranges. You don't seem to understand that that simply uttering the phrase "being a downer" illustrates exactly WHY you shouldn't be investing the way you are. What does celebrating have to do with anything? Investing is NOT emotional. It's systematic assessment. I'm fundamentally not being a downer, because my time horizon is such that NVDA could drop to ZERO tomorrow and I don't give two shits, despite being invested in them through indexes - because the nature of indexes is that it simply gets replaced and recovers. NVDA could shoot to $1 TRILLION dollars a share and couldn't care less except to cash out immediately because that obviously overweighted, but other than that it's just basic investing practices. When the stock market goes up 20%, I DON'T BUY - I rebalance my ETF/bond ratios and siphon those ETF earnings into safer vehicles, and when it tanks I do the opposite, and buy ETFs on sale. It is AMAZINGLY consistent - but it's not flashy at all...

Do you KNOW any of these analysts - actually follow their career? Or are you just bandwagoning onto THEIR bandwagoning? I'm not saying they're wrong. I DON'T KNOW if they are right. I also know THEY DON'T KNOW if they are right. That is the nature of gambling. Also: Oh, no! I just checked and the report landed after hours and it's down -1.32% at this time!? What does that mean? Nothing. Actually fuck all. They made money, just NOT ENOUGH to impress. There is only one thing we KNOW about markets in the short term: They will fluctuate.

I would also keep in mind a "not put all your eggs in one basket" approach and invest at least HALF of the invest money you make in "relatively" low risk ETFs like VOO. You might be a trading genius, or just lucky. With a couple hundred thousand in VOO at an early enough age (AND DON'T TOUCH IT), you are going to be thanking yourself later on when you do, eventually, make a catastrophic mistake.
