Considering that stuff investments feels like some real delusion. Making god ROI on that stuff requires a good deal of hussle: trade shows, buying/selling constantly, these days streaming and some sort of social media presence. I mean all of that sounds like a full time job to me, no thanks. I just wanna crack some MTG packs and enjoy the game and fawn over certain cards for my next deck. But a lot of collectors think they can hit the lottery or maybe they think a couple of expensive cards will be their retirement. Pretty ludicrous IMO, it’s just so much work to actually get decent cash flow vs putting it in the market. My more out there investments have been on company stock options where the company was not public. In those cases it’s very difficult to tell if that’s gonna pan out, but for the startup I worked at my $1k investment ended up getting me over 180x return, so now I’m convinced it’s a decent bet when in reality I probably got super lucky (but tbf the strike price was super low for me and it wasn’t that much money in the grand scheme to bet).

Magic the Gathering (MTG) cards. yes yes, Pokemon is the more popular collectable, but MTG will be around long-time because people actually play the game, not just buy them to collect. This mean interest stays high/grows and inventory slowly shrinks as people degrade, destroy or lose cards, helping the value go up. Probably not as good on average then the market, but it booms in waves, so timing can result in a reasonable return. I see them more as a higher risk emergency fund that is uncorrelated to regular markets
I did just buy a hobbit MTG box that I plan on keeping in its wrapper. And another to draft with friends in a couple weeks. The LoTR boxes run about 100% above what it cost a few years ago when it came out. I suspect this will as well. And if it doesn’t, I get to rip packs.

I can't believe you predicted FF Collector/Play as well as you did but then you say some dumb shit like this. MTG has never done as well as it is now and has blown Pokemon out of the water from an investment perspective in 2026, even if you remove Collector boxes from the equation.

I think it’s a really interesting segment. I think they’ve raised prices slightly in the past year but with scalpers doing so well, they could raise again. Nike had a similar thing happen during Covid with sneakers and crashed the reseller market by raising retail prices. I think Pokemon cards are going to react differently than shoes though. Fashion has much more violent trend swings from Nike/Addias to Hoka/Saloman/On, etc. Moving entire genres from Pokémon to MTG or One Piece is a tougher sell so Pokémon’s moat is much stronger. I would go with calls here too but hardware cost scares me for next gen console for Nintendo.

As someone who runs in the circles of some scalpers (though I do not partake myself), this checks out. Big box stores (Walmart, Target, etc...) are seeing MTG products fly off the shelves very nearly as quickly as Pokemon, with UB sets going like wildfire (except for the Avatar set I guess). Things will only continue to speed up until people are stop willing to spend above MSRP on product, which will never happen. Say what you want about HAS and WOTC, but they have plenty of runway for success moving forward.
MTG is a shell of its former self. They've killed the competitive scene, and they will eventually burn out everyone else with how quickly they're releasing these garbage sets right now.

Money is going from Pokemon into MTG. MTG is really just getting started with re-pricing it's chase cards. If there's only 3 UB sets a year the amount of UB properties is still effectively infinite. They can do new FF sets 5x more times in 10 years and every time it'll be the new best selling set of all time.
That corpse is currently 6'8'' and weighs a fucking ton. MTG is doing better than ever according to LGSs I've talked to, despite the vocal UB haters online.
Hasbro is oversold. Q2 was killer for MTG. Strixhven was a blockbuster set and Marvel sold incredibly well. Hobbit is in Q3.

Every card game (except yugioh afaik) is experiencing a surge in prices for some sought after cards. The problem is, a lot of that demand is just speculators trying to take advantage of actual collectors or the people who are giving these cards value in the first place, the players. its an artificial period of inflation. There are so many speculators buying off new products to resell that demand is skewed to unreasonable levels (MTG recently did a limited artist collab drop, sold out in minutes, then upsold on ebay and other sites for more than double the original price). Pokemon absolutely has staying power as a collectable, but the current prices will not hold except for the oldest and rarest stuff.
I plan to divest completely from QQQ in my retirement - non tax event- investments. I have seen no good argument for the fast track rule. This deal stinks. It looks like corruption at its worst. Did a Chat GPT session to do research and I will switch to 3 or 4 of these ETFs/Funds MTG/XLK/FTEC/VGT/SPMO/MTUM/FBCG. Its an aggressive - probably more aggressive than QQQ portfolio. I've been lazy to not do some diversifying these past years - but hey QQQ served me well.

You could before, but Valve made it so you can craft higher tiers with low tier stuff. Which blows out the 'value' of the loot boxes. Like an old MTG pack that costs $700 not because its old, but because of the *chance* it has an old card worth thousands. Or you could find a guy that has a glowing butterfly knife skin and just buy it from them for $1500. Things like game skins were "supposed" to be the *real* NFT's, since no one really wants a cartoon picture of a bored ape. But then again, spending $1500 on a skin for a knife in a videogame seems kinda ridiculous.

MTG and her advisors were usually pretty good. Don't know if any was inside info (hearings), Some of the others are simply so late releasing, the info is wasteful of time to consider. I tried a few option plays on some, but it really wasn't overly productive vs day or swing trading.
I live in a moderately sized city with like 5 game stores. The last two MTG pre releases has sold out at all of them days before the event. Two of the stores have physically doubled in size in the last month to accommodate all the players. HAS calls for earnings in a few weeks might not be retarded

Honestly though I'm short on MTG in general. Each sets demand is stimulated by increasingly powerful cards. Pretty soon the game is always won by turn 2 even in semi casual pods and players get bored of anything except sealed formats to artificially limit the card pool and even then it's mostly random luck of the draft.

MARO has said MTG is picked up by middle/high schoolers, who then see another resurgence once they graduate college and get their first jobs, and then another resurgence once they have kids and the kids are a bit older. So it's sticky across a lifetime for players.
My play group about 30 all have quit MTG its getting straight insane how much they pump out now.
MTG is doomed. They're printing so many sets that it's becoming impossible for anyone remotely casual to keep up with the competitive metas, and the casuals are playing Commander on Tabletop Simulator without buying a single pack.
Yeah it's a very specific type of person who hates UB. I started in the 90s with MTG and I think UB sets are really well designed and fun to play with.

This is true, but I think with the K-shaped economy, whales and upper 10% of consumer spenders aren't pulling back. The overall TCG market across the big properties (MTG, Pokemon, One Piece) are all signals that we're still growing. The highly risky Cyberpunk kickstarter TCG raised like $28M so far, on an unproven game with no long term proof that it'll last more than the kickstarter and that's way more than anyone expected it to end at.

Only thing that makes me nervous is how hard they are milking whales. As long as the FOMO crack keeps working your calls print, but if player sentiment turns and people get burnout from 5 variants of the same card every set, multiple might get ugly fast.
Didn't FF release last year, hence it woulda been included in Q4 ER at the latest. It wouldn't be in Q1 of 2026. Correct me if I'm wrong though. I don't play MTG though. I can understand the growth as new sets and collabs happen; however, ER this quarter could prove a short pullback beforehand due to failed ER.

Those crossover sets really changed everything - even casual players who normally skip sets will drop serious cash for stuff like Final Fantasy The whale milking strategy with all these premium versions and secret lairs is wild but it works. Local game store near me can't keep anything in stock lately If they really got something bigger than Final Fantasy locked up that could be massive. WoW would make sense since Blizzard needs wins right now, but Star Wars licensing... that's Disney money territory Your call positions look aggressive but MTG revenue growth has been carrying Hasbro hard. Toy division is basically dead weight at this point
