Yeah I get you. When it comes to the fandoms I think Nintendo has more hardcore fans than Sony. But that’s only on the gaming side. But Sony’s not just PlayStation like I alluded to. I do think it’s most valuable asset today isn’t PlayStation but its Music segment. Consider this, for the last fiscal year, PlayStation/SIE generated $31 Billion in revenue and $3 Billion in profit. Sony’s music segment on the other hand generated $14 Billion in revenue and $2.96 Billion in profit. That’s profits that are pretty much neck and neck with PlayStation’s with significantly less revenue. Also within the music segment is the heart of Sony’s anime business, which is Aniplex. So basically your Demon Slayer, Monogatari, Madoka Majika, Fate etc that’s got loads of passionate fans are basically from Sony. Sony has a tight grip on the fastest growing segment/demographic of entertainment (anime). Gaming is a somewhat mature business. We even see Sony’s anime strategy with the success of the Demon Slayer infinity castle movie last year. So the production company behind Demon Slayer anime is Aniplex. Aniplex then licenses the IP to its sister company, Sony Pictures (using Crunchyroll) to distribute it worldwide. The film is a massive box office hit and brings in $780 Million at the global box office (outgrossed Superman btw). That then ties back into Aniplex who owns the merchandise rights and sees a significant upside from merch and toy sales. Sony music Japan also owns the music too and gets a boost in revenue from that. This is called a flywheel. And Sony has perfected this flywheel vertical integration with it’s entertainment businesses. They also did it with The Last of Us where they took the IP from PlayStation, gave it to Sony pictures television to turn it into a hit show for HBO and then that drove up sales for TLOU games on PlayStation. See what I’m saying. Sony can take one IP and monetize it different ways and keep everything in house. Nintendo is now trying that with their IP but have to share the profits cos they do not own their own movie studio or theme park. In fact most of the box office upside for Mario movies go to Universal. Not Nintendo.  So yeah always remember that Sony’s not just PlayStation. They’re far from it. They’re the company that pockets your money when you stream Beyonce or Michael Jackson, or when you buy a Tanjiro figure, or when you watch a Spiderman film in theaters. That’s massive moat that is unique to them and them only. Whether you like it or not, fan or not, YOU WILL GIVE SONY MONEY. You can avoid Nintendo by not buying their consoles or games. With Sony it’s much harder to almost impossible unless you avoid all entertainment altogether

Article is wrong, SK Hynix themselves confirmed they'll be issuing ADS in their F1 filing. You can check it yourself, their temp ticker(SKHYV) for today have ADS in its name. ADRs are legally required to include it in their stock name, that's why NTDOY and BABA has ADR in their name while ADS listing like TSM doesn't. ADS = Actual shares sold here but ratioed so it doesn't share the same voting powers as their original primary listing, you are buy and holding the US denominated shares of the foreign company directly. Examples would be ASML, TSM, IREN, etc. ADR = Bundle of ADS held by banks and financial institutes, there's sponsored and unsponsored version of this. You purchase the receipt representing X amount of ADS but you don't own it and have no voting rights unless it's sponsored, like in the case of SONY, TM, etc. Prime unsponsored ADR examples would be NTDOY(Nintendo), it merely tracks Nintendo based on the ratio but don't influence it at all because Nintendo doesn't consider it to exist. For ease of explaining, they'll just tell you "ya it's ADR" to shut investors up, but it's crucial as an investor to know the difference if you are buying huge amount and care about voting powers.

Agree, SONY CMOS image sensor is a much better play on robotic and self-driving car perception since those are actually mandatory, whereas LIDARS are optional and in fact aren't used on 99% of robots and most self-driving cars that's not Waymo.

Mentions:#SONY

The major issue with LiDAR for physical AI is that it's way too expensive, Ouster LiDARS start at $3k and goes over $20k each. When mass market humanoids like Tesla Optimus are priced at under $20k, and cheap ones are as low as $5k each, there's simply not economical to put LiDARS on robots, and that's why you don't see LiDARs on mass market robots and humanoids. The cost is only justifiable for premium self-driving cars like Waymo. Elon Musk is famously anti-LiDAR, he says humans don't drive cars shooting lasers out of their eyes. CMOS image sensors, especially the physical AI ones built by SONY, is a much cleaner way to play Physical AI perception. These are fundamental, every robot and self-driving car needs CMOS image sensors, whereas LiDAR is optional, and not on the majority of robots and self-driving cars.

Mentions:#SONY

Anyone think $SONY is a good buy?

Mentions:#SONY

You guys reckon SONY could take off for their semiconductors division? Apparently SONY makes the best CMOS image sensors (cameras) for the physical application side in the AI roadmap (humanoid and canine robotics, self driving vehicles, drones etc). Together with their recent deal with TSMC, and the fact that all other sectors in the AI roadmap, that is, training (GPUS), inference (CPUS and RAM) have pumped before it, the physical application side of AI being the last point in the equation, makes me think SONY semiconductors could pump. Only problem is you have to buy SONY group which includes the cyclical divisions of gaming, music and entertainment.

SK and MU had a great run, but the next major growth phase of the AI capex boom is going to be chips that power Physical AI (humanoids and self-driving cars). SONY dominates the AI chip market powering Physical AI, and it's highly undervalued right now since its PlayStation business got hit hard by the temporary memory shortage, and its stock was at ATH as recently as 6 months ago. SONY's physical AI chip business is now a quarter of SONY's group profits, and is growing 40% YoY. Massive value play, probably one of the only true value plays in large cap AI chip companies left. There's a helpful explanation of this thesis, just search 'Sony chip stock investor' on YouTube.

Mentions:#MU#SONY

SONY, they own the AI chip market for Physical AI. There's a good explanation of Sony's AI chip business for Physical AI, just search 'Sony chip stock investor' on YouTube. Sony is still near 52 week low b/c their PlayStation business got hit by memory shortage right after their stock hit an ATH as recently as last November. Once the memory shortage lifts, expect a bounce back to ATH with their AI chip business as a call option on Physical AI mega trend.

Korea and Taiwan are the first beneficiaries of AI, but Japan is next. I don't like the TTWO play, but I have opened a big position with $SONY instead. It's trading at a near 1yr-low. Is big in image sensors (which is used within AI more and more now) and GTA 6 will not release on PC, only consoles, which Sony has the large majority of market share. In addition to that the PS6 is incoming. Seems extremely under-priced, especially considering their books are solid. It's currently down because of the weak yen and faith in Japanese companies. Kind rolling with buying the company which is selling the pickaxes in the gold rush. Feels good to share this gem I genuinely think has a crazy upside potential with everyone before it actually happens.

Mentions:#TTWO#SONY#PC

i'd separate the GTA 6 catalyst from the SONY sensor thesis. TTWO is the cleaner event trade, while SONY needs the market to care about two slower stories at once; i'd watch whether the first spike in hype actually sticks after the date news fades.

Probably start of next year or when Amazon or TSLA talk more about robot. We've pump the stock market with A.I, Space, Quantum Computer but we don't really talk much about Robot yet. So we need big guys like Amazon or TSLA to talk and show more of their robot before SONY will really run IMO.

I see this from a value investor perspective. NVDA is priced to perfection right now, that's why despite the big beat yesterday, NVDA is down 2% today. SONY stock hit an all-time-high $30 / share as recently as November, but then got hammered down to $20 because of memory shortage, but strong earnings 2 weeks ago has it up 10%+ since then. SONY already has sold 90M+ PS5, so they are actually not impacted that much by memory shortage, unlike Nintendo whose console is brand new. Market has overly punished SONY stock when fundamentals are very strong. Plus it's interesting that Jensen harped on non-stop about physical AI (robots and autonomous cars) as the key growth future growth driver for NVDA on the NVDA earnings call yesterday, but the one chip that is required for all physical AI is the one that SONY dominates in CMOS image sensors.

I went dumpster diving last week after selling SPGI & MCO. It was hard to digest going flat on both holdings after holding for over two years. Thanks to many of you for providing some great ideas like CAAP, SONY, etc. I ended up landing on growing my RDDT stake, buying big into MELI (12% position), and opening up a 5% position in FIG. FIG was an interesting proposition for me. I work with Product & Engineering orgs as a finance partner. I have a SO who works in Design. I'm fortunate to even have access to how Figma bills the org and the reliance we have on Figma. I tried to get into the IPO at $30, but as we all know that wasn't happening and then the euphoria kicked in. It fell down my watchlist and I stopped tracking the company. The SaaSpocalypse hit and the music stopped playing. At it's current valuation, it's far below what Adobe proposed to swallow them up. I don't think they're going anywhere, even if the roles of Product Designers, Product Managers, and Devs will change over the next 5-10 years.

GTA 6 is basically a PS5 exclusive since PS5 install base is about 4x higher than Xbox’s. Meaning Xbox console presence is negligible at this point. Also TTWO has an EXCLUSIVE marketing agreement with Sony, so all the trailers will be filmed on PS5. Also if you notice in the last GTA 6 trailer, they had an actual PS5 in the game that the main characters are playing on. SONY is the company bet to make on GTA 6 aside from TTWO themselves.

SONY makes some sense MSFT doesn't. Not only SONY has a much better market share right now but people buying consoles because of GTA6 are much more likely to buy a PS5 or PS5 Pro than a Series S or Series X. PlayStation is also a much bigger part of Sony than Xbox is of MSFT. I bet that in 2026 a lot of Series S owners already retired the console an moved to something else. Xbox is pretty much at an all time low at this point, completely irelevant in most territories.
