I would argue that it depends what you stake . For example I am currently staking tokens on the Cosmos Network (ATOM, JUNO, OSMO, SECRET, ROWAN) and because the new blockchains on the Cosmos network are prone to giving airdrops you would have actually made a ton of money even with a small bag of ATOM. Atom has a staking APR of around 14 % and if you staked it before February 18th 2021, you would have gotten a 1 to 1 drop of JUNO ($24/token @ 103% staking APR), a close to 1 to 1 drop of OSMO ($8.16/token @ 62% Apr) plus a bunch of various other tokens like STARS, COMDEX, LUM, SHADE .... If you then staked Osmo and Juno you would have gotten a ton of rewards and their staking APR's were higher in the past but they have gone down due to a higher bonded rate. Juno stakers also received 1-20 NETA which was around $2k a token when it came out So though staking in most cases won't get you rich in most cases, it does depend where and what token you are staking because right now the Cosmos Network is POPPING OFF
For people that don’t believe this figure some of the drops have occurred in 2022 but the snapshots were from 2021 Between osmo/ion ; Juno/neta. Stars, HUAHUA, REGEN SCRT . Smallest ones like CMDX BTSG DSM LUM SOMM NOM DIG Expected ones this month : SHDE EVMOS which are both going to be huge drops again. some of the air drops were pretty substantial, LUM and STARS the others were only a few hundred, most of it I converted to ATOM but I staked some incase they take off
not even counting the airdrops, so far I got HUA, LUM, DESMOS, BITSONG, NOM, SOMM, COMDEX, STARS and I started over the summer

Bullish on LUM and the whole Cosmos network forever
I’ve been staking ATOM in a non-custodial wallet since I first bought in back in February 2021. And while the price of ATOM did multiply on its own, the value of the airdrops I received over the past year are now worth than my ATOM wallet. ATOM led to free OSMO (and ION, which is sort of part of OSMO) and JUNO. Staking the three led to airdrops for CMDX, DSM, LUM, BTSG, and most recently HUAHUA. There were others I didn’t qualify for and there are still more upcoming; each with their own rules, requirements and somewhat different claiming procedures. I’ve sold off my initial investment into the ecosystem last summer and since then it’s just been airdrops and staking rewards growing more airdrops and staking rewards. Mostly I just got lucky with the initial timing, and then lucky a few times more.
