With this kind of threat level, I'd personally run Whonix inside of QubesOS- Tor-routed traffic and MAC address come standard, like TAILS, but with the benefit of sandboxing and out-of-the-box full disk encryption, makes it damn near impenetrable to any attack imaginable.

MONERO. Private. Anonymous. Untracable. Combined with you using TAILS OS

Bro many mistakes, why are you online with your wallet? Why windows? Why not offline TAILS OS. https://electrum.readthedocs.io/en/latest/coldstorage.html

Right, but the seed isn't on the offline laptop, it's somewhere else, like paper. You could sign a tx from *any* offline laptop once you boot with TAILS.

Thats lame cause a non tech savvy user would prefer a hardware wallet over using tails on a USB and signing transactions with that. Also if you do that you can only use electrum and bitcoins only. I have staked coins on websites and I have my ledger connected with metamask. You can't do that with TAILS and electrum. So yes my point stands, hardware wallets are necessary!

> However hardware wallets are ... necessary! No, they're really not. You said it yourself: Electrum. Even with Electrum (and other free tools like TAILS) you can set up an effective and highly secure airgapped coldwallet. No gimmicky HW wallet necessary at all.

Accidently send your coins to the wrong wallet or have your exchange account get hacked. Then send the coins to yourself on a wallet downloaded / installed on TAILS linux. Then convert to monero and never touch a KYC exchange. 👍

Best crypto life hack... Use a TAILS bootable DVD/USB(virus scanned beforehand) for anything crypto related. Don't use the same PC that you use for social media, youtube, online shopping.

The seed should not actually be kept on the dead man's switch either. Ideally, it would be on a cold card somewhere away from your home and the dead man's switch will just send the PIN. You can also encrypt the seed words in the persistent folder on TAILS (kept out of your home) and send the passphrase to decrypt TAILS.

You can use electrum on TAILS(live USB drive) as a cold wallet, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are an advanced user. If you want to learn more, check out these links : https://tails.boum.org/doc/anonymous_internet/electrum/index.en.html The 10x your BTC security guide has a section on using Electrum( which comes pre installed on TAILS) https://btcguide.github.io/emergency-recovery/

A BIP0038 password protected wallet, generated from a TAILS boot DVD/USB is better. Wallets from glacier protocol are better yet

People should have separate linux based machines to do all things crypto if they are using wallets a lot, or trading or what have you. . If you have to have a hot wallet, use a more secure OS. You can get cheap thinpads with fast enough processors and say 16gb ram for under 200. Also as soon as you have a few thousand in crypto, I recommend a hardware wallet. Or atleast set up a TAILS drive to store your keys on a hardened OS.

I think it will be a long road. Bitcoin custody isn't easy technically speaking. I cant think an average El Salvadorian will be familiar with TAILS OS + Electrum styled back ups in order to secure his BTC...but its a start. Lets not rush it in.

Get TAILS my man. Electrum comes preinstalled. Well I guess you have a HW wallet now but a soft wallet is more convenient for active funds.

>not sure electrum is working on tails currently Wut? Yes, it is. You just click the Applications tab in the top right of the UI, move the mouse down to "Applications", and then click "Electrum Bitcoin Wallet" in the pop-out. OP should save the wallet file to the persistence folder or to an external USB to have backups of it and not rely on the seed phrase but I just opened electrum on TAILS and it works fine. Don't know what you're talking about.

Thirding electrum and it can be done super easily and securely by making a TAILS USB and booting into it. TAILS is debian, I think, but it comes with electrum preinstalled, networking off by default, and no hard drive mounting by default. (so no worries about viruses)

> used an old raspberry pi 3b. Just flashed a clean image of TailsOS Did you really? TAILS doesn't work on ARM devices https://tails.boum.org/support/faq/index.en.html#arm

TAILS is on-line when you boot it, which exposes the wallet's keys to the network A hardware wallet keeps its key-store away from its USB connection, so the keys are never exposed to the network The Electrum equivalent to a hard wallet is to use an off-line device for the key-store and for signing transactions, and another instance of Electrum on-line, with a watching-only wallet (addresses, not keys), for building a transaction and for broadcasting a signed transaction https://electrum.readthedocs.io/en/latest/coldstorage.html The benefit of a hardware wallet is convenience. By keeping the keys quarantined off-line inside the device, and connecting the device to a USB port, there's less human effort in the cold protocol If you choose one of the "airgapped" hardware wallets, they're inconvenient for having to move the transaction to and from the wallet using a SD card or QR images. A proper cold protocol for Electrum is similar to this

Thank you. You're actually really helping me figure out a more secure method! I didn't even think about the possibility of website code being bad. And you made a valid point that offline history could be sent by malware when you go back online again. I already have TAILS, so great idea to use TAILS to generate the addresses (as well as potentially sign air-gapped transactions). I don't know why I didn't think of this. I really have to do some major research on how to create an address without relying on any software. I'll look into this. I really appreciate you explaning this thouroughly to me. I'm going to do some research and make changes to my method

I'm 24 now. I started buying shrooms and acid off AlphaBay with BTC thru TOR, TAILS, and the Electrum wallet in early 2016. First purchase I ever made for investment purposes was $500 of BTC in Q4 2016. I saved up that money working 60 hours a week for Amazon delivery during the Christmas season that year.

> any true way to know for certain Glacier is as close as you can get, but is very expensive https://glacierprotocol.org/ Much cheaper, use TAILS. Then your risks are that your TAILS boot USB is safe, and that your PC's BIOS is safe. Also use TAILS as amnesiac (that's what the "A" stands for). Do not enable persistent storage

r/BitcoinSee Comment

Ok, sure, as a concept, but actually no. Boot up a TAILS drive, on a non-internet-connected computer, and you'll be plenty safe to generate a new wallet/seed. No need to go crazy handicapping oneself...
