Yeah. You basically let BTCPayServer host a simple payment website either with just a simple keypad or a more complex website of your liking where BTCPayServer is integrated. You either simply enter an amount in BTC, sats or your desired currency and BTCPayServer generates the corresponding invoice qr. Or your website has predefined articles that you choose whereafter a corresponding qr is generated and shown. The customer can then either pay via lightning (offchain BTC) or usual BTC payment (onchain). It's relatively easy to setup and there are many vids outhere that will help you in case you aren't successful. I recommend to also setup an own fullnode with lightning on top where all of it is connected to the BTCPayServer instance. But that's not a must. You can also setup a BTCPayServer on a VPS like linode etc. if I remember correctly and they also host the fullnode etc for you. But of course is much more sovereign to run everything yourself.
Storing your seed phrase online is never 100% risk-free, but given your situation, if you have no other choice, you can take some serious precautions. Encrypting your seed phrase with a strong, well-audited tool—like PicoCrypt on a Raspberry Pi or using a freshly installed VPS—can help secure your data before it even leaves your control. Splitting the encrypted file and the keyfile across multiple secure cloud platforms is a smart way to mitigate the risk of a single point of failure. One additional step could be converting your seed into its underlying entropy. I use backblaze b2 to host the backups. Yes it's a cloud provider. But rclone does encrypt the data **before** uploading it to the remote. So nobody controlling the cloud or the even the connection in between gets to see any of the unencrypted data.
You are missing quite a few things: Backups are just data. Renting the storage for that is cheap. A couple of bucks per month. Renting an equivalent amount of compute and RAM is hundreds of bucks per month. The single core performance of this machine doesn't even compare to the vCPUs that you rent. Which is huge for the game servers. I also would not have a 10gbit connection to all the services I run. Latency is also a factor. Everything is basically instantaneous. Privacy. The memory and disk space of the running services is also not encrypted, so that basically invalidates all the privacy gains too as the VPS provider does have physical access to all of it. I don't want random employees of the VPS company to get access to the camera footage in my living room. Even if they promise to not do that. It's just a promise. I cannot validate that. The NAS is also a data and backup solution for my other devices. Copying a file there at 10gbit is amazing. The second level backup is then the scheduled tasks when it uploads it to b2 in the background, which doesn't matter how slow it is since, well, it's in the background. Home assistant is replacing Alexa/Google/Siri which is a lot more easily to handle when the devices are all in the same network. All of it continues should my internet connection die. Previously I couldn't turn on my lights because alexa just doesn't respond at all without internet. Granted, internet was only gone once, but still. Will probably happen again for a day or two when I switch providers in the future. And probably a few other factors that I did not think of myself off the top of my head right now.

I have a trustless setup for myself. 1. multiple steel washers in different locations (e.g. bank vault), where the seedphrase is not in the correct order. Each washer has a seed word and a number on it. 2. two different password managers that hold the correct order by the identifying number without any reference to the seed phrase 3. last will at notary which holds the password and a Yubikey to access the password manager handed to the person named as my heir. This means, no one with the washers can access the wallet and if the pw manager gets hacked or notary goes rogue all they will see is a random sequence of numbers. My next safeguard will be to create kind of a dead man switch on a VPS or even the blockchain, which sends out detailed information about how to access everything, as this is still in my will. Idea is to check in once a month as alive and then send out an email to myself if I didn’t do it in time, if I then do not confirm within 3 days the guidelines will be sent to my heirs. In case I didn’t die, they will receive a cool guide that doesn’t do anything as they do not have access to the order of the words or the words themselves.
I've had honeypot files on various services for years and nothing was taken, even plain mnemonic stored in clear text. AES with good long password will work just fine. Find cloud storage that at least promises zero knowledge encryption. I'm liking the proton drive and filen dot io. And maybe some more generic ones, google, microsoft, even dropbox. Encrypt everything in a secured environment that you control; do not place clear text secrets on some VPS.
You don’t need gpu since you won’t be mining or anything. A VPS with enough storage is good enough, as others have said here at least 1TB, iirc a full node of btc was a bit over 500gb a couple months ago. Also, depending on what you want it for a pruned node could be enough

I can buy basically anything on amazon or walmart by loading a gift card code in the phone app. Even fuel at walmart gas stations.
there are people who prefer to self-host their communication infrastructure i.e. installing a fediverse server on a VPS. they prefer to do this without identifying themselves, so they pay the server bill in monero. it's a culture shock if you are used to big centralized websites like reddit or twitter, but the old web is still there. people who run these things don't like to give out their names all the time.
What happened with the fees? I usually do a few transactions every year (renew VPS, domain, etc.), and I was used to 100 sat/B being cheap, everything below 100 a very rare fee discount, and 200-300 sat/B being the high traffic expensive fee. And going bonkers to 400-500+ sat/B when ordinals were popping. Now I've been doing some transactions the past month or so, it's always been 2-3 sat/B... did some huge update drop or something?
Yea, that's what I thought but tbh I'd run out of other options... I tried it, and it didn't help, go figure 😶 I'm honestly thinking about just torrenting the chain. Might try spinning up a VPS first though... Pay money to move money 🤑
A VPS, node, and blood/pepper
It may not be so bad, you lost 13 characters of the WIF, but if most of those were at the end then you may have lost a bit more than 6 characters of the actual entropy. Last 4 bytes of the WIF are used for the checksum, and the byte before that is used for marking key compression. This translates to close to 7 characters of base58 which you don't have to worry about. With 6 missing characters the problem becomes solvable in quite short time. Even my cheap VPS can do around 220 EC private to public key translations per second, so it would exhaust all possibilities within 5 to 6 years. If you have any other hints, for example you can tell one of the characters was for sure either `a` or `d`, this reduces the time 29 times, so down to 2 or 3 months. You just have to make sure you get all the data you can from that paper, since any clue makes a ton of difference.
I ran a node until a few weeks ago. HDD is now full on the VPS and I’m struggling to find a decent alternative that offers hardware capable of running a full node for a reasonable price. Any suggestions?
What port is your NGINX using? Make sure your VPS firewall is configured to allow traffic thorugh the port you are using for nginx. Connection Timeout is usually a strong hint towards a firewall ignoring packets. Also make sure your app using the port of nginx, not the port of bitcoind. > 'gui' json interface I'm not sure what you want here. JSON is just a text document format. Yes you could. But do you have redundant power or internet? If there is an outage at your home, then you're not as robust as a VPS.
Its easier and more private to host a node on a VPS instead of at your home. You get more uptime, and you can use clearnet and not reveal your home IP.
Maybe not stop it entirely, but they could make it difficult. From the technical side of things they could demand all ISPs scan for and block all traffic which appears to be using Bitcoin protocols. That would stop most people. There would be people who would have work arounds (Tor, encryption, alternative ports, VPS, etc) but it would stop most people from running a node or engaging in transactions. Of course governments could also block traffic between known nodes, put trackers on computers to report people, introduce sentences for people who used Bitcoin, etc. Someone in this thread said, basically, "There is still porn, they can't block that so they can't block Bitcoin." Yeah, in countries with free speech laws that are generally okay with porn, sure. But try looking up porn in places that are super against port and see how that goes. Even if you can find it, if you're caught you might go to prison for the rest of your life. So not a lot of porn viewing happening there.
Do you mean theoretical transactions or actual transactions ? BCH may support more TPS theoretically but almost nobody uses it, so the actual TPS is a lot lower. Besides TPS isn't the whole of the story, I could invent my own coin that could do billions of TPS, but nobody would use it to send large amounts of money because the proven security and trust isn't there. What really counts is the total value transferred per second. Is there any other with a higher VPS (value per second) than bitcoin ?
I run a (new) public node on a VPS that came up last weekend. Its incoming traffic has been a fairly constant 10-12 Mb/s with light CPU use. It certainly has room to grow. Granted that’s a single datapoint, but it’s better on resources than I was expecting.

That's because you're only considering the internal hashpower. Your "absolute" hashpower is also "relative" to what it represents in worldwide available compute power. By your metric 100 000 nodes in VPS instances with almost null hashpower would have a better coefficient because "more nodes". If tomorrow half of Bitcoin miners decided they wanted to mess with Litecoin or BitcoinCash then how would your "Nakamoto coefficient" prevent that ?
Posting one address is bad for privacy. Someone can track all of your txns, and also your customers previous history. For very simple setups, Breez wallet has a nice Point of sale feature in their app, and pheonix wallet is good for self custodial lightning. Both of those wallets offer lightning txns for your customers, but can also do on-chain. If you are really getting into accetping bitcoin at your store, you need to setup a BTCpay Server. It's an open source bitcoin merchant setup and its amaizng. You can run for $20 a month on a VPS, or run it at home for free. But you have to expose your IP address if you have it at home for your customers to see. Feel free to hit me up with any questions if you need help!
Bitcoin was never anonymous. People can use it however they want. Some keep it untouched, some spend it on gift cards, VPS, VPN, donations, etc. They can also sell it for fiat and improve their lifestyle. What are the doubts again?
