I'll say this with optimism: 1. The USA is over 10 years behind China in emergency infrastructure and technology and there really is no chance of the US catching back up. The same can be said of a lot of technologies, consumer drones are easily 5 or more years behind. Autonomous taxis are at least 5 years behind. Battery technology is 5 to 10 years behind. The reality is China and has definitively surpassed us and it is on the back of China the renewables were both economical and booming in the US. It is also why the US being fucking stupid is okay. From a global perspective it won't be wasted. The rest of the world will be the consumers of the Chinese products. And that will continue regardless of what the US does. 2. California actually doesn't really have much reason to add more renewable capacity at this time. They already produce more electricity than they can use during daylight hours the vast majority of the year. Their issue is storage capacity, which has been improving significantly. Here is California ISOs website for energy generation, this covers the energy generation for almost the entirety of California https://www.caiso.com/todays-outlook/supply yes they have some more improvement but storage is basically California's biggest barrier for pushing clean energy further right now. They need the gas plants for both stability and night time generation, but the battery storage capacity has increased by an actual insane amount. 2 years ago they were lucky to have 1.5GWH at peak discharge, and today they regularly have 7.5-10GWH discharge at peaks and right now at 9:30pm in California batteries are the 2nd largest source of electricity and 20% of the total. And they still have room to grow based on already installed solar. 3. Texas energy has recognized the efficiency of wind and solar for ERCOT solar/wind combine for 25%-30% of energy generation in Texas during the day. Their storage is also lacking. They certainly have both room to grow and an interest in that growing. Less optimistically the rest of the country is lagging behind. Some of this is simply location and geography. Texas and California are both high population and great places for solar and wind to be efficient. If you look at other ISOs (just Google it, the wiki will give you a map and you can look up a variety of them, like MISO for the Midwest. And you can see what energy generation looks like there. The reality is regardless of pauses and what not energy generation is trending to renewables. It will continue to do so globally because the US is increasingly becoming irrelevant when it comes to the future of energy. If the US won't buy panels and turbines from China, the middle east, India, Brazil, and Europe will continue to happily gobble up all they can produce. But to mention China will likely start developing energy infrastructure in Africa in the next 5 years as they shift manufacturing their. The US can pause clean energy but it won't stop it globally. And importantly the longer it is, the more it will go crazy when it ends.

Just saw the response - thanks! I just played the dip again this week 😅 I invest 2x a year (dec-feb/march-may) for my portfolio, and have an overall 9-14% ROI [Yr/Yr] For whatever reason - the BE aggro drops before spring earnings every year, regardless of outside factors. One thing i noticed for spring - BE will ramp up about 3-4 weeks out, sell-off about 1-2 weeks out, and a week after earnings happen will go up again. I'm using this same method with GWH (ess tech) - strong squeeze, etc, etc - but both have strong institutional holdings (outside of shorts)

The advantage of EOSE and GWH batteries is the batteries can be placed in/near populated urban areas. Their batteries will not catch on fire and do not use materials that will contaminate the environment. The batteries a more accepted by the public. I feel the future is solar panels on warehouses and other urban buildings with nearby batteries that can store the excess energy. Their advantages will be this will strengthen the grid, power will not have to travel as far to be used and the batteries will provide backup power. The Illinois legislature has a bill that has been introduced that will build more power storage through out the state to help meet the future environmental requirements. Both EOSE and GWH have different designs for their batteries. EOSE batteries are individual self contained boxes which need to be stacked together to form the larger battery. GWH is a redox flow battery where there are pumps that pump the electrolyte from one tank to another through membranes in between. The advantage of this design is it can be increased in size to fill up a warehouse. GWH recently got a Inport EXport bank loan and has an agreement with Honeywell to collaborate on design of their products. As more and more research is done by both companies hopefully they can make their product more competitive with lithium batteries or make their batteries have more value to be competitive.

I’ve been following flow batteries for a while. The space hasn’t been bogged down so much by issues and flaws with the technology, rather delays from slow moving and conservative utilities. This is huge news. It’s such a clear vote of confidence for the company and it feels like it’s coming at the right time. Investors just arriving to this space will benefit greatly from the low prices because of these companies going public to early. For a chance to hedge your bets, look up GWH, a similar company who got a similar vote of confidence from Honeywell last year. Just one year ago, this stock traded at $4. This news puts them in a much stronger position than they were a year ago. 🍊💦

The big question you must ask yourself - what segment are they targeting - Passenger EV, Commercial EV, BESS, consumer electronics .... If passenger or commercial EV, little chance for success because of the time frame to get overall safety and reliability performance. It took TLSA nearly 10 years to transition to LFP batteries from NMC and I still do not believe they fully transition. If BESS, the LFP has a huge lead and flow batteries (like GWH) has partners with deep pockets and have a number of test modules in place that offer better safety. ZInc batteries will have a play but I feel it will be relatively small in comparison to Lithium.

Not downside specific to typical spac mechanics at least. Sometimes spacs get really shorted and not even bc they’re short targets. Sometimes pipe investors or possibly even insiders box there shares (short to lock in a sell price) that people see and want to squeeze. That info is usually buried in the filings if they can. That can cause some negative price action but at the same time can cause some craziness when people see the short interest. The downside could be if the ticker is getting so front run that if nothing happens they all sell. I’m still thinking a cnbc headline of Sam Altman ringing the bell brings in an influx of buyers. But you never know. I got lucky years back buying cheap GWH calls before it completed its spac merger. I was getting the 12.5 c for something like .15 and when it merged multiple articles came out saying a Bill Gates backed company just merged causing the price to go from around $8 to $30 in less than a day. That was a really small float tho, maybe 1/10 what will be here. Still though with enough volume anything can happen.

I'm wondering if the next new boom is in energy storage and micro distribution moving away from large scale energy generation. All this money has been pumped into green energy generation to replace coal and natural gas fired plants, but there hasn't really been much in the way of storage, especially in residential backups. Being in the Midwest (USA) sometimes in the summer we get storms, or in the winter ice that knocks out power for a few hours or even days. I can deal with the house being cold, but we have livestock and if the power is out then water pipes and tanks freeze over. I work in the construction industry and i had asked one of our electric contractors about solar for my farm as a backup. He told me the solar you typically see on homes only works if it is tied to the grid since it needs to match phasing. Lithium Home battery systems tend to double the cost of the solar and need to be replaced because of the dendrite fire issue. There just isn't anything affordable that can match a propane generator. I'd looked into alternatives to lithium and while watching YouTube what's new tech videos, what i found promising is Iron flow battery tech. It's not as compact as lithium, but manufacturing and material costs are lower which is more attractive for integration in commercial buildings. There is no fire risk so small versions could be installed in garages or basements of any apartment building or residential home to compliment the solar on the roof or micro wind turbines. I've invested in ESS (GWH) since it's been around for a decade and has a proven product It just seems like all that it needs is to get its name out in front of Tesla as a chapter alternative for grid scale storage. From there it's just manufacturing scaling. There was a statement in an article on their website and I'm not quoting it exactly but it was in response to the size comparison to lithium batteries; "Sure it's bigger than lithium, but compare that to how much land a wind farm takes up. Size doesn't really matter."

Been looking into (GWH) ESSinc which makes flow batteries out of Oregon. They're still in development, but from their website it seems like they have a product that works and is in long term testing. Honeywell recently partnered with them so it appears funding is secured, just needs time to expand. The focus for battery storage is on Tesla and lithium as the magical solution to storage needs, but Regional politics can play a huge role in the supply chain. ESS uses iron and salt which is readily available throughout the world. What interests me is that the battery module doesn't require conditioning to keep it cool or warm to function properly. And the fire risk is near zero. So minimal power use while the battery is sitting, and no need for a fire suppression system. The partnership with Honeywell leads me to think there will be development of backup systems for commercial use (hospitals, warehouses, municipal buildings). The lack of fire danger means the battery system could easily integrate with building codes, low upkeep costs, and 25 year shelf life makes these battery storage systems attractive.

Just started investing as of Xmas last year - any spare cash I have (better late than never)... currently have a sick dog/took a massive paycut from being a chef last year... so i could help my 73 year old dad's business (like -$25k a year 😬) As a birthday gift to myself in may... either 20 shares of BE, or CWCO - both around $13-14 Price of the 10 I owned already was: BE @ 18.65 - 1yr forecast of 22.00 CWCO @ 15.30 - 1yr forecast 25.00 Decided with bloom, as I could sit on CW dividends... Maybe should have went cwco - but as long term - BE is on the cusp of 1st year actually doing good business. Bought apple at $120ish in January instead of disney at 76... also bought a couple hundred shares of GWH at like $1. Portfolio is at +12% YTD, and its the bad part of the year - gotta say I'm proud of myself, so far.

I think I get it. So they do have customers. The sample they sent out last December is for “qualification,” which is the process of getting your part into a car. Next sample is the commercial cell design. Then they make the last sample on the mass production equipment. Commercial cell sample goes out next year. That’s the sales process for OEMs. First car will be an Audi or Porsche IMHO. WRT revenue, they could surprise in 2024, but more likely it’s 2025 when they sell the mass production samples. Should be small-like millions to tens of millions. After that VW has agreed to a 1GWH initial factory that scales up to 26 GWH. We don’t know the specifics on other factories. But each GWH is >$150M revenue. There could be surprise early revenue from consumer electronics, but it’d be a surprise. We know they’re working on it but not the status. Wrt the competitive advantages, it’s above. They’re the only thing coming out right now that’s better than where Tesla has been for years, and they’re a lot better.

So obviously I don't know every stock. My theory is 1) it gets shorted extra on good news (or did until this year), and 2) it's price has consistently declined as its competitors dropped out and it continued to achieve all its develop milestones. Presumably this is a risk off environment, and future revenue is hard to value, but I think also it's just a very good short candidate if you're really just betting against the market. We also know the market was willing to bid it up to $120 not too long ago. Back of the envelop, 1 GWH of battery production is 1M KWH. Market price for standard batteries is $150/KWH. Historically, new battery tech gets like a 30% profit margin. A mature battery manufacturer gets 60 P/E ratio. So figure $2-3B market cap for each GWH when QS is mature? QS has five agreements already, two of which are JVs for 25 GWH and (going by memory) 45 GWH. So let's call that 30 GWH each. So with the 5 OEMS, 150 GWH -> $300-450B valuation. Right now it's sitting at like $4B. If the battery really is 15% better than anything else on the market it'll sell like hot cakes. It won't be 5 OEMs.

I’m into iron and zinc. GWH just beat on EPS (worse on revenue), EOSE beat revenue (worse EPS).

I'm talking about the grounded bull thesis on the automotive business not the moon shot robotaxi 10T market cap Cathie Woods bull thesis. That one isn't even worth discussing in my opinion, for a variety of technical and regulatory reasons. As for the automotive business I don't think Tesla experienced a $13k drop in COGS per Model Y between Q4 and Q1. Costs don't drop in massive step change fashion like that. Margins will be impacted have no doubt about it. And if they want to keep growing volume like crazy they're gonna have to keep dropping prices and eating into margins. COGS savings only get you so far. Competitors are subsidizing their lower volume EV businesses with ICE profits right now. When they hit sufficient volume they will become profitable just like Tesla did 2 years ago. Until then, they will take losses the same way Tesla took losses for 17 years. I wouldn't get too excited about legacy auto going out of business. There is too much of a vested interest from governments that don't what to see their auto businesses fail. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, US and EU governments will provide whatever subsidies, bailouts, loans, investments that are required to see these companies successfully transition to EV power trains. As for grid storage business. I don't see this as becoming the huge profit engine that bulls think it is long term for a number of reasons. It may have high margin on low volume in the short term. But ultimately Tesla is reliant on CATL, BYD, LG, Pansonic for their battery cells in order to build Megapacks. Those companies control the supply chain for the primary cost component of the grid storage solution. They can simply undercut Tesla with their own solution. In fact, CATL who supplies LFP batteries for Megapack already has their own competing Megapack solution that is doing massive contracts around the world. 1.2B Primergy solar facility in Nevada, 10 GWH with FlexGen in US, 10 GWH with Gresham in UK, etc. Static grid storage will be a race to the bottom on margins long term and the battery cell makers will drive price competition. Grid storage will become commoditized. Similar to how the latest and greatest consumer electronics technologies are expensive the first couple years and then the price gets driven down as everyone starts making the same thing flooding the market and driving price competition.

FYI - EOSE earnings 2/28. GWH 3/01. GWH and MVST are beat to hell. All are energy storage batteries. Not saying if you should do calls or puts, but I’d expect volatility. Have fun! (I’m long EOSE and GWH, so probably short it.)

And grid storage energy business will be a race to the bottom on margins as batteries are commoditized. The actual battery cell makers control the supply. Tesla just buys from CATL and repackages them into their own product. CATL already has its own competing grid storage product that is getting massive deals around the world. 1.2B solar project in Nevada with Primergy Solar. 10GWH deals with US based FlexGen and UK based Gresham House. There is also competition coming from LG, Panasonic, BYD, SK. These guys control the battery cell supply and can undercut Tesla on their solutions. The solutions will become a commodity the same was as everything else with a low barrier to entry.
