Someone please school me as to why the stock splitting would cause OP to want to retire? From what I understand they would instead of holding 1 share worth $1,000 now have 2 shares worth $500 therefore still only being $1,000 or is there something about a split I don't know?

I think this is a big part of what happened today. The fed, interest rates, covid and people panic selling like OP. Once the panic started it just kept going with margin calls and more panic. Some people don’t have the stomach for this. It’s not so easy when everything doesn’t just go straight up.

Dear OP, nice writeup. Bye. She won. 2. Countrywide was the Robo signer. We worked for them in 08. The two too dudes committed suicide. Court settlement and BofAzz got the notes and JP Morgan got the properties. No idea how that worked but they basically had to eat every loan. The $$ came from JPM when offering dimes on the dollar for all of them. For readers wondering if this is all DD or FUD. I guess the best reason I have for owning some is that it’s a small, high risk investment that I’m okay with losing if it hits the floor. Can’t win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket. I don’t get it myself either and the more that happens the less confidence I have in it. I bought some shibu coin to hold long (even though I expect nothing back) and started buying ethereum as I’ve noticed like OP stated it follows BTC pretty closely. Total investment of 2% of my overall portfolio

I think people just get confused about what she means by 5-year plan. She won't bother clarifying because it works to her advantage. The 5-year plan refers to a metric by which the team measures a company. If the company's growth potential hits a certain threshold over a 5-year mark, then the firm would deem that company investable. Note, I'm not saying this is their only metric, but one. The firm will continue to invest in a company, so long as it's 5-year growth/returns, meeting their threshold. None of this really has anything to do with the price of the ETF though. Via the transitive property, people conclude that this must mean that you must hold the ETF for 5-years, and with the same 5-year outlook. The problem, as OP pointed out, is that Cathie pivots constantly. That's the blessing and curse of it being actively managed. She can dump a company that no longer meets the threshold. But that price depreciation hurt the ETF in the meantime. This cycle plays out over and over. There's also the chance that she could just be wrong about some of her picks.

Mentions:#OP
r/wallstreetbetsSee Comment

Yes it splits with the stock split so mathematically their value is unchanged from the mechanics of the split. HOWEVER - if the split somehow leads to upward price movement (either before or after, such as it did the last time tsla split) then OP will make bank but it won’t be due to the split mechanics but due to the split helping upward price movement of the underlying (eg due to hype or due to increased accessibility to investors who couldn’t afford shares at the old pre split price).

Historically speaking when a market crash occurs the leader of the bull market is the one who crashes the hardest and fastest, in this bull market it has clearly been TSLA. You need to factor in a risk of a crash, with current TSLA valuation the stock could potentially go to as low as 300b market cap, even more. So yeah this is a huge fucking risk, imo if this were to happen a new TSLA rally would be slower, and more grounded on fundamentals, OP could break even in 2030.

OP is mainly correct. The FUD causes the dip of almost all Chinese stocks. But, if SEC is going to ban trading Chinese securities, OTC is banned as well. Nonetheless, as mentioned by OP, the probability of being delisted is too low. But, BABA is definitely being targeted by CCP government. This gives far enough reason to justify the crashing of BABA. IMO, Chinese EV stocks are the best deals in this recent crash by FUD, because they are SUPPORTED by CCP. (Unlike BABA, TENCENT which CCP view them as threats.) CCP will help these Chinese EV companies go overboard for sure. They will have the lowest probability of being delisted.

That is true, but OP mentioned doing this through their 401k, which would not allow for much of either of that, so I was assuming they meant with a buy-and-hold approach. If your intent is to actively trade your holdings, then you are correct, there is potential benefit to after-tax accounts assuming you can beat the buy-and-hold approach by a sufficient margin to offset the higher taxes upon withdrawal. (Which I don't believe is a good assumption but obviously that's debatable).

> Sure, as OP said, you have to be right twice. You have to know exactly when to leave, and when to get back in, or vice versa. No you don't at all, you can be off by like years, and miss both the top and bottom by 20% and still come out significantly ahead. In 2008, the bottom of SPY after the crash was $72, which would be very hard to catch, but it was lingering around at around $85 flat near the bottom for MONTHS on end, extremely easy to catch. In order to break even at that plausible entry price, you could have exited as far back as **2003**, 5 years earlier... a full 2 years too early would have gotten you a bonus 45% profit still. 3 years too early would have gotten you a 30% profit still

It’s the same as before OP, I see huge dips/crashes as a fire sale to buy more of what I already have at a cheaper price. I mostly buy dividends stuff though so my mindset is: 1) any money I put into the market i now see it as 0$ I am prepared for it to go all the way down to 0$; I don’t invest with money I need. 2) if the dividend policy changes on the stuff I invest in (removal of dividends all together or monthly going to quarterly or whatever) then I sell and if I’m down overall it’s a nice tax write off 3) if a company does some shit like a reverse stock split to try and save it’s ass and keep its price high enough then I’m out as well. Other than that I don’t care, the price goes up, it also goes down, when the price goes down I can buy more on sale to get the same dividend per share (hopefully) and then it goes back up and I still buy more when I have the money. TLDR: dips/crashes are an exciting moment for dividend focuses investors
