If you aren't in some software to balance out the semiconductor volatility, then you aren't managing risk very well. Software companies are down enough that they will have comparable returns to semis at current levels simply due to valuation, and have total negative correlations. This also includes other "AI-losers" like data providers. FDS now up 37% off the lows and up 5% today. Plenty of money to be made from non-AI stocks.
AI is great for coding, but here's my issue with general usage: Claude or any LLM searching the entire web for each question is such an inefficient way of going about searching for things, it's obvious it uses up such a gigantic amount processing power, that even some light usage gets you throttled even on a pro plan, from personal experience. This has many implications: While it may seem bullish for energy and compute, and it is, it means the buildout required to meet this compute is not only a massive number, but might not even possibly ever meet demand. This is especially true for other industries besides software engineering, where AI compute is even more inefficient. I really don't see how an LLM searching for point-in-time information in such a roundabout way over the entire web will efficiently replace curated data. This is why Anthropic has partnered with so many financial data companies and users use MCPs to connect to them. Claude has FactSet MCPs, Morningstar MCPs, etc. The implication is besides software engineers, AI will likely not be adopted quickly by other industries because the cost and compute inefficiency is way too high. A good buy will then be AI "disrupted" companies in other industries for example SPGI, FDS in finance, and brokers like BRO, AJG. There is a good spot for them in terms of the speed of AI adoption (slow outside of coding), data quality (required so that AI isn't so expensive and inefficient), and general usage (TAM actually expands to the general public if they sell data on usage).

There are a lot of issues with data companies, it seems priced in, but who knows. 1) If AI makes people much more productive, it means less financial analysts needed, so less spend on per seat licenses. 2) SPGI (Capital IQ) sells data to Claude. If people now use Claude, which has other tools combined together, like Factset, Morningstar's Pitchbook, instead of paying for data companies individually, this cannibalizes on these companies' current clients. 3) If AI is such a good data scrapper, the need for these companies, they get public info and clean them up, will be less than before. The question is whether proprietary data which only these companies have and AI can't access, provides enough value. Together all these questions came together and now SPGI, FDS, MORN are trading at recession lows

I like FactSet (FDS) because it is a highly durable, cash-generative business with a most due to its essential workflow integrations for clients. It generates recurring subscription revenue with ~95% ASV retention, operates at a ~35% operating margin and 25% net margin, and produced ~$617M of free cash flow on $2.32B of FY2025 revenue. The company also demonstrates a great ROIC, at roughly 20% it is well above its ~8.3% WACC. What makes it especially attractive to me is valuation and capital return: the stock trades around ~18× earnings and ~17× free cash flow despite FY2025 EPS growing 11.8% to $15.55, implying a ~6% FCF yield. That cash supports a 25+ year dividend growth streak with a ~26% FCF payout ratio and an expanded $1B buyback authorization. If I had the $11 billion needed to buy out the business based on its current market cap, I would in a heartbeat!
Worked at an investment bank that uses FactSet. Switching would be way too cumbersome. Don’t think FDS is going anywhere in the next few years regardless of AI threats. Bought ~$10K of shares and ~$12K of calls expiring in June. Let’s hope it rips!

Solid writeup. The "embedded workflow" point is the key with FDS, switching costs are real, and subscription visibility is hard to beat. Further trimmed WBD to buy beaten down "AI dumps," like Gartner, Factset. Both company valuations have reached lows not seen since 2009. Gartner is a play on risk of more AI slop needing even more professional research, even as Gartner dumped because investors think institutions will actually use AI chatbots to make future decisions. Factset dumped on additional capex into AI development, like META dumping with too much spend on Metaverse vaporware. Investors also think Factset-provided data will become commoditized and no one in wealth management will use it if they can just chatgpt the research. However, what is interesting is AI "stock research" providers like Perplexity actually uses Factset Data. So maybe FDS is pricing in cannibalization? Instead of using FDS, people will stop spending and use others instead.
Waymo is far from flawless, but they are very good. TSLA is using cars that are already on the streets, and they plan to have driverless by the end of the year. I have actually own FSD and have seen the growth in capability and they can make millions of cars per year. While there is no corn where I live, I can use FDS on side streets anywhere in the US. It is just a matter of time when TSLA takes over this market. They have the tech, the software to run it, and the cars needed to operate it. You still didn't answer the question of how long it would take Waymo to increase cars by 100,000.

Well, by definition, that is not FDS. 1% of the time it would cause an accident? That's high. Too high.
Bought some Factset (FDS), low risk, med return now that valuation has collapsed. Also because I sold it at $470, now $370. EPS grew 60% last 5 years, valuation down 33%, so price has done nothing for 5 years. However, it's trading at 20x NTM EPS, this is as cheap is it was in the covid lows. At over 20% profit margin, it deserves more than 20x NTM EPS. It seems to be trading like there is some AI disruption. In fact lots of software companies using AI seems to be dumping, because AI has the potential to commoditize data. However, it doesn't make sense that AI would only be a disruptor, if anything, companies like Factset can use AI to reduce expenses used to aggregate data, which they currently outsource to EM countries.
Next phase it will be better, next year we'll have FDS, Robots , we should be already in mars.... you just need to have patience to Elon's understanding of the relative nature of Time.

He’s always drastically over inflating the importance of his businesses in order to get people to invest and then he does a sell off and diverts the money to private ventures. He’s been promising FDS. We were told he believed we’d have FSD by 2017. And since then has said he believes FSD is 1-2 years away every year since. I don’t see how the CEO can promise and fail to deliver the core feature of their product people use to justify the inflated market value for over a decade and still believe the current valuation is justified. Especially when other companies have demonstrated them being more capable. Like Waymo. And it’s not like Tesla can just buy the FSD ML model that waymo uses, unless they’re using the exact same sensors at least.

To me, it sounds like you took a computer science course in community college and think that machine learning algorithms take on a life of their own that can’t be replicated. If a Chinese company had the exact parameters of the neural network Tesla uses, same algorithm, and same training data, they could implement it to the same degree of effectiveness as Tesla’s FDS. Of course there would be some variable differences, but not enough to make it not as effective of what Tesla has.
