I feel like MF was considered trash by most people all through the 2000s post tech crash, but gained popularity now that the market got hot again. It's still trash though. They just hype everything hot. Im sure had plenty of good picks but now they really need to advise people that the road might get rocky for tech/hype.

MF? Yeah do as the Nancy does, or politicians in general, although I think people overestimate their control over stock price and the insider knowledge they get. If I recall correctly, even politicians make bad moves sometimes. Certainly though they win more than they lose and that’s the key.

Are they really, though? It seems to me they are quite up front about wealth management services. They also have mutual fund, and guess what? The holdings line up quite well with what they discuss in their podcasts. It's perfectly legit to question the utility or value for money that services like MF provide, but it's hardly a massive conspiracy.

Feb 2021 was the top for a lot of growth/tech which was when a lot of new investors hopped into the market and is also a central component of their picks. Hence why dollar cost averaging and having an eye to long term is important as an investor. As MF says, the only term that matters is the long term.

Given that their MF’s mantra is big and hold for at least 5 years, this is fucking dumb. That being said, the free content on Motley Fool is the worst clickbait shit I’ve ever read. It’s utterly worthless. I wouldn’t recommend anyone read it. The paid content is much much better. But it’s still awful when you consider they only give the upsell: you subscribe to their Stock Advisor service at hundreds of simoleons a year, and they immediately try to upsell to rule breakers, their next tier service. You subscribe to that, and again they’re just up selling you to the next tier, constantly. It’s terrible.

These are also just commentators there is nothing giving their insights more validity or less than the next. I’ve seen some solid analysis and recommendations on both MF and SA. Very much dislike this thought process. The average American doesn’t even understand a target date fund in their 401k/403b. For the vast percent of Americans dollar cost averaging over 30-40 years into low cost index funds is easier and has historically out performed inflation for their retirement. Not everyone has the time, patients, or interest in figuring out how to build their own diversified portfolio. Paying the average financial advisor 1% to under perform the market doesn’t make much sense either unless they provide other services with the fee. Worst case you end up with fucking Edward Jones and they sell you A-Class American Funds Mutual Funds for a front end 5.5% fee and a reoccurring MF fee of 0.5%-0.9% fee. You dollar cost average $500 a month with with them? $472.50 goes to the investment each month, Edward Jones takes $27.50 each month for the front ended fee, plus you’re slapped with MF fees. Only 1% of Americans have the liquid investable assets to be apart of a Hedge fund and even the expert HF managers aren’t guaranteed and don’t statistically out perform the market with their crazy fees. The gradually race to 0.01% fees is real and it only benefits retail. Obviously big money managers don’t want to see that. How will they charge 2% assets under management fee + 20% of your gains when broad index funds are 0.05% fee and track the market? I 100% respect Peter Lynch and have read his books, but I’m sorry he is way too old school. Now retail has most of the same resources big money and institutions have. Value investing is vastly different today. Anyone can run a free EV/EBITDA, p/b, p/e, TBV, or free cash flow screener now. I can re read all previous quarters 10-Qs and earnings calls. Large scale money managers now need to prove their worth and it’s not going well for them picking up millennial and gen X investors.

Give a me deep red open and I am a day trading long once I find the first bit of support.

Log out and dont look for a year. Seriously. If you are going to strrss over one days movements, you're going to fare very badly. It sounds like you are wanting to day trade or swing trade. This form of gambling / devils bingo I definitely left to the "professionals" (dickhead "influencer" types on YouTube who are full of shit). Also. Motley Fool doesn't have any special info. They give some good tips sure, but some bad ones. I've come to the same conclusions as MF before on my own research. I did very well with Games Workshop and Aston Martin, reaping big gains in both by selling at the right time (Aston Martin when I caught wind they were developing an SUV - rich people love buying that crap. Games Workshop just as the pandemic first hit - people stuck indoors during lockdown need hobbies). I also made 150% gains, then lost the whole lot plus half my seed money, on Lucid Motors due to share dilution. I held, and am now back up 70%. So. Buy, and hold, and have a long term plan (as in, you won't need the money for another 20 years so just leave it there), or buy, have a predetermined return and sell at that return. In either case just chill and be patient. Remember this: YOU HAVE NOT LOST MONEY UNTIL YOU SELL. YOU HAVE NOT GAINED MONEY UNTIL YOU SELL. NO MATTER THE SHARE PRICE, UNTIL YOU SELL, THE VALUE OF YOUR SHARES IS WHATEVER YOU PUT IN. NO MORE, NO LESS.

Others have already covered the MF and VTI portion. As far as the Roth IRA, they are strongly recommended for retirement investing. Fidelity has zero fee mutual funds that are excellent choice in a Roth IRA. FZROX is their zero fee funds thats really like VTI. And also FZILX for international as well. I like Fidelity's zero fee because it is cheaper than VTI but the expense ratio on VTI is so small either way would be a good choice.
