I know, it’s just there’s so many bulls here saying the AI bubble hasn’t burst and I’ve tried to explain to them that it isn’t an AI bubble bursting, people leaving the market has nothing to do with AI and everything to do with public sentiment and dozens of catalysts. Media repeats AI and focuses on Nvidia earrings to distract from the real world issues. Yet people here are all like AI is crushing it, look at this companies numbers and all that when it has nothing to do with company fundamentals or Nvidia earnings. There is a hopelessness in American right now and that’s very scary. It’s worse than it has been in decades bc this isn’t a panic like March, it’s lasting hopelessness which we can see by who the public are making the largest podcasters, YouTubers, etc. at the moment. Add catalysts like… -potential war -tariffs -bad job reports -Inflation -20 million losing Medicaid (who will not replace it) -longest shut down in history that’s only semi paused -BBB where 20 million will lose insurance creating a job loss we have NEVER seen before. The BBB Medicaid cuts is the largest regression in history. It will trickle into every aspect of everyone’s lives, even those who insurance it doesn’t hurt. Those 20 million ppl needed staff to care for them all of those staff from hospitals, dentists, DR OFFICES, spas, clinics, weight loss, nursing homes, pharmacies, drug makers, billers, medical equipment makers, truck drivers, infrastructure, etc. will be fired. How do you get 2x leverage on $100? By borrowing another $100 and buying $200 worth of stocks. Leveraged ETFs use total return swaps to achieve this rather than outright borrowing money, but the result is the same, and they pay interest on that $100 of borrowed money. The interest accrual is not part of the expense ratio. It is accounted for on a daily basis in the NAV. And yes, if you regress the daily NAV returns of a leveraged ETF onto the daily returns of the underlying index, you will find that the daily underperformance relative to 2x the index is close to the listed expense ratio + the interest paid on the swaps. You need to correctly account for day count conventions to get a precise measurement (e.g. weekends accrue three days of interest). You can even see the interest rate paid on each swap (these ETFs actually transact with multiple investment banks) in the N-PORT forms filed with the SEC.
