How do you get 2x leverage on $100? By borrowing another $100 and buying $200 worth of stocks. Leveraged ETFs use total return swaps to achieve this rather than outright borrowing money, but the result is the same, and they pay interest on that $100 of borrowed money. The interest accrual is not part of the expense ratio. It is accounted for on a daily basis in the NAV. And yes, if you regress the daily NAV returns of a leveraged ETF onto the daily returns of the underlying index, you will find that the daily underperformance relative to 2x the index is close to the listed expense ratio + the interest paid on the swaps. You need to correctly account for day count conventions to get a precise measurement (e.g. weekends accrue three days of interest). You can even see the interest rate paid on each swap (these ETFs actually transact with multiple investment banks) in the N-PORT forms filed with the SEC. Truly incredible commons of PORT still in $40’s. You would have to assume the folks buying think the price correlates to the recent Angel offering at $44 - which we have determined it is certainly NOT. With warrants down around $6 and the amendment passed, you would also have to assume some hedging has already started/will begin soon. From my end I see surprisingly cheap locates and decent borrow for a smaller float. Angel holders reportedly got an email last week that said they intend to debut on NYSE 9/11 and ring closing bell, so merger closing could come as early as this upcoming Tuesday 9/10. If commons don’t move down, warrants could provide a ridiculously good return at 10:1 here. Almost an 8x return currently.

Quant first, judgment second: I run a small set of regime flags (change-point tests on realized vol, IV and vol-of-vol, correlation/PCA concentration, and market breadth) that map to simple traffic lights, then layer discretion. Vol models are mostly coincident; a t-GARCH one-step has modest edge, but the forward content lives in IV term structure, skew, and vol-of-vol, so I treat vol as a risk thermometer rather than a crystal ball and scale when fast outruns slow. PORT and Barra are solid for exposure decomposition and long-horizon style/sector risk, but they are slow in stress, so I overlay a shrinkage short-horizon covariance and my own correlation monitor; they are guardrails, not signals. De-risking is usually cash because it is cheapest and avoids basis risk; I add hedges when skew pays and will mix SPX, equal-weight, sector, or futures baskets to minimize mismatch. I am not a Mag7 tourist; single-name and group caps, plus a catalyst and liquidity bias, keep concentration in check.

I had the academic exposure, time-series, stochastic calculus, the FRM canon, but the real learning came from sitting next to a quant risk manager, reading the original papers (Engle, Bollerslev, RiskMetrics, Ledoit–Wolf), and then living through a few drawdowns where models either helped or got in the way. We use commercial risk systems (Bloomberg PORT, MSCI/Barra or Axioma) for factor exposures, beta, and an external lens on correlations, and we ingest options surfaces from Bloomberg/brokers. The decision-critical bits are implemented in-house in Python so we can see every assumption: pandas/numpy for data, statsmodels and the arch package for GARCH-t cross-checks, scikit-learn for PCA and shrinkage, cvxpy for portfolio constraints, plus a small ES/stress library we wrote ourselves. R’s rugarch shows up occasionally as a reference. It started life in Excel years ago, but anything that touches sizing is now code-reviewed, unit-tested, and versioned; the signals are simple enough that transparency beats algorithmic fireworks. It’s standard graduate-level statistics applied with boring discipline: clean data, simple models, out-of-sample validation, explicit tripwires, and liquidity haircuts. The heavy lift isn’t the math, it’s wiring the outputs to hard actions and sticking to them when the tape is loud.
