These two choices are dichotomous. Either one happens or the other. If Trump TACOes out to choice 2 after trying some version of choice 1 it will just turn into a worse choice 2 with even worse consequences for the US and longer hurt on the global economy than necessary. My (admittedly layman) take on it is this: He essentially has every intention of accepting Iran’s proposal, perhaps with a ‘few’ amendments. He’s ramping up the rhetoric to the point of threatening the destruction of their entire civilisation, so he can claim that they folded under his biggly pressure. The absolute most important factor to him is his image, nothing else matters. And if he can portray himself as the ‘tough guy’ he will, even though he knows full well they have him by the balls and he’s being forced into accepting a second rate ‘deal’. If this happens, the bullshit and lies flying out of the WH will reach unprecedented highs.
