tldr; As Bitcoin and Ether hit record lows this week, we're now seeing up to 11% lower card prices on eBay compared to last month. AMD's RX 6600 tied for the highest price drop of 11.6%, going from $586.89 down to just $518.66. On average, nearly every graphics card dropped in price by 5% or more. *This summary is auto generated by a bot and not meant to replace reading the original article. As always, DYOR.*

I spent more than a year mining on an ancient AMD R9, then took that money and invested it in a slightly less ancient AMD RX580 which had a reasonable ROI time. Eth shot up that year and ROI happened in half the time. My family just had a baby and we were living paycheck to paycheck. I kept chipping at it to get us staked more and more in crypto. Last month when my wife was hospitalized for a week with COVID, I was able to cover being out of work for a month and the majority of her bills with my crypto gains. It’s the first time my wife ever thought crypto was something real instead of “that computer game my husband plays.”

>The thing is, Bitcoin has been at or below 10K for a decade, why didn't you go all in then? I wasn't that much of aware of this crypto investing/speculation before 12 months ago when I started GPU mining. I've known about Bitcoin for ages but never really considered it having any basis on it's price gradually increasing. But now I see it systematically does it. People just buy it for no real reason, and that along with ever limited supply, means it's price will in long term average go higher. I've always thought these's no technical point for Bitcoin to have much value, since a single BTC can be divided into so tiny portions, so any tiny amount of value can be transferred with it, regardless of the price. But it's not functional as transfer of value, nearly no crypto is. It's a vehicle of speculation. And I believe, when done correctly, it can be called as investment. I don't look USD prices since I don't have USD; But I don't see how BTC really could go below 15k euros. That's about 17k USD. If it would break that limit, there's no way it would go below 11k euros except for very brief and mostly irrelevant times. Also, as a GPU miner, I have an unreasonable large position in RX and RTX. I don't want to take two-fold risks, so I regularly try to sell the mined ETH off. The value of my GPUs is linked to the value of crypto, primary BTC as ETH just can't break free from it. So eventually this cycle is going to end and I think there will be a major crash, I only want to have a small amount of ETH then, as my GPUs will take the hit as well. Fun fact: I've been meaning, that if and when I will buy reasonable amount of crypto, I will hide my wallet addressses somewhere here in Reddit. We will see how things go. I think currently it will take nearly 2 months for market to recover a bit.

I imported 8 card (RX580-GB) machines from China. Was $5000 each. I did have to borrow money to buy them, but turned out to be one of the better investments Ive ever made. Even with depressed prices, mining is still profitable and it really helped my family get through this pandemic. ROI was under a year.

I have been solo mining Ethereum for about three months now and have almost $10 worth. I turn it on at night for the heat more than anything. Radeon RX590 8GB so not exactly top of the line but for the sake of this discussion I would say it is kind of close enough. With GPU prices requiring a 15 year mortgage right now, you are very likely to never see profit solo mining right now.

Raking inn about $12 a day on that, pluss I save some electricity on heating 🤗 when 2.0 is finally launced and POW dies on ETH, I suspect mining profitablity wil take a nosedive across the board as the big GPU boys/gals wil switch their insane hashing rigs iver to the next best coin, and difficulty will skyrocket 🥴 time will tell 🤗

Resume What GPU is the best for mining? This is a very broad question. Are we talking about efficiency since the electricity price is high? Maybe about raw performance because we have solar panels and the power usage is not important for us? Is budget an obstacle? Some of the best-performing GPUs can cost more than $3,000 right now! It is also worth mentioning that the prices of GPUs fluctuate a lot at the time of writing. All of this combined means that the final answer will be different for everyone. The most used metric when it comes to buying mining GPUs is ROI (return on investment). How long does it take for the GPU to pay itself back? The lower the ROI, the better. Use this metric when deciding what GPU to buy. This metric is not always the most accurate, because daily profitability constantly changes and ROI time will most likely not be the same at the end. You can calculate the graphic card's ROI by following this formula: ROI = GPU price/(daily profit - electricity used). Another metric that you can use is the price per MH/s you are paying. This metric is straight forward and accurate. But it is important to compare only the hashrate of one algorithm and not to compare, for example DaggerHashimoto on GPU1 to KawPow on GPU2 as the results will be different. You can calculate the price per MH/s by following this formula: Price per MH/s = GPU price/hashrate on given algo. AMD or NVIDIA? NVIDIA seems to be more versatile than AMD, but that is not always the case. AMD can mine KAWPOW (Ravencoin) and DaggerHashimto (Ethereum) quite efficiently. While NVIDIA GPUs can generally efficiently mine all the coins like Ethereum, Ravencoin, Ergo, Conflux and others. Choosing NVIDIA gives you the ability to competitively mine more different algorithms compared to AMD. NVIDIA GPUs might be more “future-proof”. But AMD GPUs are not to be underestimated. There might be other future algorithms or coins that will be more profitable on AMD GPUs compared to NVIDIA ones. I have free electricity! If you are in a student dorm, electricity is not free, and be careful before moving your roommate out and setting up a 5kW mining farm in your dorm room. If you use solar or have really cheap electricity (less than ∼$0.06 per kWh). Then you can pick a more power-hungry and less power-effective GPU like the RTX 3090. NHOS Older or newer generation GPUs? Are you planning to resell the GPUs after a couple of years? In this case, we would suggest buying new generation GPUs like RTX 3000 or RX 6000 series since these cards will still be competitive in gaming after 3 to 4 years. If you are not planning to sell the GPUs and will only use them for mining, then we suggest buying the one with best ROI. Let that be the latest generation or older one like RX 5000 series and RTX 2000. We do not suggest buying GTX 1000 or RX 500 series or even older for mining. For example, GTX series is actually losing its performance over time due to increasing DAG size (GTX 1080 Ti used to hash at around 55 MH/s but can now barely achieve 45 MH/s). New or used GPU? Some might argue that used mining GPUs will degrade over time. But this is (generally) not true. If the GPU was kept clean, below 70°C and its fans were spinning under about 60% speed then the GPU can keep on hashing for years. If you come across a GPU with known history, then the risk of buying a bad GPU is low. Maybe GPU manufacturers should keep a history of temperatures and load in the BIOS just like cars keep track of distance traveled? How to calculate the electricity price? It is worth noting that the actual electricity price you pay per kWh might not be the same as it is written down on the invoice. In most countries, people pay for electricity + network charge + VAT. This means that your electricity price is not equal to the electricity price stated on the invoice. But you must divide the total invoice price by the kWh used in the past month. For example, Bob used 3000 kWh in November. The price per kWh is $0.06. The invoice should be $180 (3000*0,06), but the invoice total is $320. For Bob to get the actual price of the electricity, he should divide his total invoice amount ($320) by total kWh used (3000). This results in an electricity price of $0.106 per kWh. How to calculate ROI of mining GPUs? Use our Profitability Calculator to calculate the ROI of GPUs. CALCULATE PROFITABILITY Select a GPU from the dropdown menu and input additional information like your electricity price and GPU price in the text boxes. nicehash profitability calculator As always, feel free to join our subreddit or Discord server where you can ask questions to other community members and even to our staff. I mine and while it may not be on a commercial scale I believe that my hashrate is higher than many as I have six 3090's, six 5700/5700 xt's, six RX 580's, six 1660 supers, two 2060's, a 3070 and a 2080 Ti. That said depending where you live I'd be careful about getting into GPU mining right now. You see ETH is going PoS in the new year so after that the combined hashrate will turn to ETC, RVN, ERGO and a bunch of smaller or other none ASIC resistant protocols. Also the price of energy is going up in many parts of the world right now so you could easily get caught in a three way squeeze of lower earnings, falling prices (from a bear market) and rising costs. That said if you do decide that you want to mine DO NOT do it on a laptop, unless you like the smell of melting plastic and the feeling of money burning away 😂😬 Also try the subs r/gpumining and r/Ethermine.

It's like Christmas every time I get into it. I have a lot toys and enjoy life and don't worry about being hyper rich. Investments are just for fun and for buying more toys. In my 20's I was poor and didn't give a fuck. It never stopped me from hanging with my friends, having lots of sex, and just enjoying life. I didn't travel like all of the instakarens or eat at douchey restaurants, but I had some of the best times of my life going to Denny's with friends at 2am.

But i have no regrets, i still did well, and the trusty old 4 cylinder Toyota awoke my social life, which was direly anemic, made a lot of friends around town and went to 30 car shows in tje previous 12 months alone. I cover the RX costs for 3 elders in my family (6-9,000 per year) who all had their pensions gutted by private equity acquisition. One needed new hearing aids last year and that was another $3200. I’m lucky to have the money to cover it but it’s absolute bullshit that billionaires and corporations like Verizon and Amazon pay nothing. I bought my house with BTC. Long hold on a myriad of bags. If this imperiled my money I would oppose it. But it doesn’t and this post is deceptive. DYOR. Unless you are balling bigly this will not affect you.
