I miss the days when the only software developers were extremely autistic. Things were so optimized back then. Sure, there was some necessity at the time due to hardware constraints, but also just most devs were obsessed and had FUN coding for 100 hours a week. Now dev jobs are almost a meme for how it would be 4 hours of work a week. Obviously not true for everyone, esp for 10x devs, but it happened enough to where it became a meme and I think the way a lot of software and websites work these days, it kinda shows.
Okay so my grandmother just died at the age of 108. I’m 26 years old and work in tech and of course I gamble everything away and my father (his son) is a doctor who’s made lots and lots of money building and selling practices oh and he’s a boomer and 69 years old (nice). The plot twist is that yeah my tech job pays me 6 figures and I don’t have any money because of my gambling problem, but I’m going to be receiving an INHERITANCE of $4 MILLION. Apparently the estate is valued at $35 million and she was a nurse and simply made all that money by buying and selling tech stocks and real estate. I was told that the estate won’t be settled for a year and that may be enough time for my startup to work out before I even receive the wire, but I’m getting a BIG inheritance. All I can say is that I’m gonna be on this sub for quite a long time. This is like being given an entire bowl of candy. My parents aren’t receiving anything because he doesn’t need the money and they refuse to give me any of theirs but this is gonna be FUN…

Well. I mean... when you put it like THAT. I make 131k plus bonuses at my full time job before fatty benefits and matching. So minimum $63 and probably more like....$85 lol. Yeah I’m still 100% ETFs right now - honestly I may not even buy one of these. Maybe I’ll just buy a tech ETF. Buying a mag7 ETF seems okay… but just too concentrated. I’d rather have a somewhat diversified tech ETF. Any single stock seems too risky but I am feeling the FOMO for sure. I can definitely get 10% CAGR just by sticking with my ETF strategy. But it would just be FUN and satisfying to have a position do 20% in 6 months or something crazy, even if it’s only 0.5-1% of my port. Big green number make brain happy.

That would suggest a broad market S&P outperformed a majority of investors who bought the same individual stocks. The only way you win, is if you "guess" right on the stocks. Otherwise, you're still offsetting wins with losses. Most investors have just as much of a chance of picking 10 losers as they do picking 10 winners. Index funds prevent you from hurting yourself while still returning 10% average each year. I would wager that, for every one investor that chose correctly, there are 5 that didn't. Again, preservation of wealth is more important than chasing growth for my 85 year old parents. The risk of individual stocks outweighs the potential gains of tax loss harvesting. In the end, every one of their mutual funds has positive gains. If they had it in individual stocks, then they would be able to sell some without tax implications to their SS. But, that would also mean they made less than zero on the tax harvested stocks. When that happens, you're not gaining anything. You're breaking even.

My experience with FUN goes back more than 50 years, and is limited to Cedar Point, which is 20 minutes drive from my childhood home. In those earliest years, the park was staffed with local kids who at that time had long, long summer breaks because in the area, agriculture was king, and farm kids worked the farms. That left lots of other bright-eyed, corn-fed, well-mannered midwestern kids to run Cedar Point. The notables then were a high level of hospitality, extreme devotion to cleanliness (the Sweeperettes crew), restrooms everywhere and spotless, and food/drink that sat right in getaway culture - the famous French Fries, taffy made right before your eyes, etc. By the 1990s, the nice local kids were replaced, almost totally, by foreign kids on some sort of government-arranged work program. They spoke deeply accented English, if at all, they did not come with the built-in midwestern work ethic, and things slipped. Cedar Point also abandoned the old-fashioned idea of an amusement park in a never-ending quest to build taller, faster, more thrilling coasters - and they did. But bozo ideas like getting rid of the canal boat ride, and de-emphasizing the beach and natural beauty of the area, made adults, especially well-heeled adults, shy away from the plastic environment dedicated to only people from age 15 to 30. I think Cedar Point, and amusement parks in general, should be more like exotic getaways, resorts with the exotic - something different - and a place where everybody can get away for a day, like REALLY away. I’d pay $200, maybe more, for a day like that. Heck, I pay $175 to go to The Schvitz for a half day of steam and plunge and steak and booze and cigars. I loved roller coasters, and taller, faster, was all cool. But I would only brag on FB about the Blue Streak, a 100+ year old wooden death trap and wildly exciting old coaster. Even young people get that there’s something deeper, or today just the hint of it, than fast food and fast rides. Get on a 100+ year old carousel, and enjoy the campy, the innocent, the everlasting. FUN needs to go full-scale up-scale and start making money, by making memories again for its visitors.
