Store brands and companies that failed to innovate (KHC). plus people not drinking (DEO.) Also, the problem is that in this world of narratives, cheap has to be cheaper than before. So many people on here who went on for years about PYPL being cheap in the 60's and then it eventually winds up in the 30's. Nobody wants to wait for GIS to turn things around while there are tons of things that are working. If you're retired, then there are things that are going to get through this and they can DCA and get more yield. Other than that though, I just have had no interest - I've said this before; I'd rather own the shelves (KR) if had to own food. Maybe you get further consolidation in this sector, but that doesn't mean that deals will be done well - look at SJM buying Hostess, which has been a disaster that's already seen write-downs.

This is the answer. My CVX position is up 100%. But I bought it years and years ago as a dividend play and it just worked out. Of course, I fully expect it to float back down to earth. I’ve also held SJM as a dividend play and that crap has lost value. Wanted to sell it last year to harvest losses but I wasn’t allowed. Bummer.

Putting basically every major coffee company in the American market, KDP, SJM, SBUX, BROS, WEST, I don't think that people are correctly pricing in the increase in import costs on coffee now, and further, I don't think investors understand that coffee has gone from a necessity commodity to a luxury in its current form, thus with downturn market/the not-recession recession we're in, $8 grande matcha frappes are going to be pretty high up on the list of things Americans choose to stop consuming when squeezed to make hard decisions.

r/stocksSee Comment

You are talking about switching to cpg companies (PG, etc) in a time where those companies havent done that well. PEP has turned up a bit after the last earnings, but before that was down about a third off the high. HSY is still down nearly 40% from the 2023 high. GIS is down about 33% in a straight line since the 2024 high. SJM is now negative over the last 5 years. The consumer staples ETF is still green for the year, but is underperforming and probably would be underperforming a lot worse Evif it was purely staples brands and didn't include staples retailers (WMT/COST are top two holdings) and some other odds/ends. Eventually that underperformance will likely end but I don't know that that's next week or next month or a few months from now. You also have a lot of defensive stocks like GIS that have some genuine issues - brands going stale, tastes changing, bad management (SJM already writing off much of the Hostess purchase from 2-3 years ago) etc. Perhaps more of them break up like Kellogg but not all of these names have things that can be spun off that will attract buyers.

r/investingSee Comment

The situation has actually gotten better for SJM since that call. The stupid 50% Brazil tariffs are almost certainly a stupid bluff, and production should be coming up due to better crop yields in the months/year ahead. SJM popped up something like 9% since the bottom. I took my profit and sold out already to put that money elsewhere, but I suspect they might see a full recovery on next earnings. If there is another drop out, I may buy back in for it.

Mentions:#SJM
r/investingSee Comment

Go listen to SJM last earns call. The expressly said that because of tariffs, they were raising the price on Folders and Dunkin 20% and were anticipating a 10% loss in sales volume.

Mentions:#SJM

There's just not been much innovation at some CPG companies - Kraft is a huge example of what happens when you prioritize cost cutting over innovation. Store brands are also winning - many of them taste better and are at least moderately cheaper. "General Mills follow suit?" The Kelloggs deal will probably at least start some food M&A discussions with various brands but whether they go anywhere who knows. General Mills could spin off pet food w/Blue Buffalo but take that away and you're left with an unappealing set of people food brands. They need to dump underperforming brands and try to look for deals to refresh the portfolio but no guarantee that that works. Bad deals can certainly happen - look at SJM already writing down the value of the Hostess purchase less than two years later. Personally would continue to prefer who owns the shelves in terms of food - KR, WMT, SFM - than the brands trying to compete for shelf space.

I swing trade with a focus on stocks that bounce between relatively stable ranges. I would not recommend either for long term holding though they're healthy companies overall. SJM you can easily take in 5-8% in a couple months just buying when it drops below 110. Range bound stocks can be extremely profitable if you rotate between them.

I just bought a bunch of SMPL yesterday as a bit of a leap of faith technical play. They bounce around between 32 and 39 constantly so I'm hoping to catch that movement. I also like SJM as a stable trade, they've been flat for like 5 years so it's easy to scalp some % here and there relatively risk free.

3rd this. Years ago I used to DRIP some dividend payers I bough during the 2008-09 rout. Some of them (such as MCD and KO) did better in capital appreication than others. But my lesson learned was if a basket (such as SCHD) exits, it was better to just park it there. I still get my dividend yield, but no single company can take my capital down. Other stocks I picked are still up - but I think SCHD would have outperformed them (couple of examples were KMB and SJM). Now if I really like the individual company, I'll still buy their and hold their shares outside of SCHD (such as MCD).

r/stocksSee Comment

> Pretty unsexy isn't it Low beta plays like staples and utilities are definitely the play going forward. Recession proof and boring so they don't have wild swings. I'm looking at water treatment companies which have been completely unaffected by all of this market manipulation and also relatively cyclical making good 6 month trades if they continue moving as they do. My targets are WTRG @34-35, AWK @120s, and AWR @71 SJM is also a friggin tank if you can get it in 100-110 range.

Until PFE gets new management I wouldn't want anything to do with it; MRK is getting increasingly cheap but cheap can get cheaper (see BIIB.) CNQ is interesting/cheap in energy. MEDP is a good company but it's been a very difficult time for life science, CROs and a lot of healthcare - this last quarter was the first time where the backlog has gone down. Alcohol has been obliterated and while I get that people are drinking less, at some point some of this stuff like Remy (REMYY) down 80% off the high is interesting. I don't love Vail Resorts, but there's certainly been errors there and it's a compelling enough asset that could be run better in someone else's hands and $25-30 above the covid low it's kinda interesting. Couche Tard in Canada a quality business at a 52 wk low/about -21% off the highs of last year. Some of the railroads (CNI) are cheap. I'd maybe rather HSY than SJM if I was going to look at a CPG name but there's others.

SJM- When I placed the trade the stock was at 120.34. I traded the 20 sep/18 Oct 120 Put calendar spread. When I placed the trade the front month IV was 26.24 and the back month was 21.84. The most SJM moved after the past 8 earnings was 3.66%. I expected a crush of around 4.6%, I modeled it out in TOS and my breakevens were 4.1% on the downside and 4.7% on the upside. I entered the trade at .85 and set a limit of 1.20 GTC. It was filled at 1.30. CPB= stock was at 50.25. I traded the 30 August/20 Sept 50 P. CPB has weekly options so it gave me a little more juice since I can select from multiple series. At the time the front month was 68.4 IV and the back month 28.21 so I expected a crush of around 38.9. I entered at .33 and got filled on my limit order at .66.

I have been very conservative in my options trading. I started paper trading last year and all I do are earnings trades. I do calendar spreads on stocks that typically don't move a lot after earnings. There were very few trades that fit my criteria this week since earnings season is coming to an end. As an example this week I traded SJM (JM Smuckers) and CPB (Campbell soup). Not as exciting as trading Nvda but the SJM trade returned 53% and the CPB trade returned 100%. I have been trading live since the beginning of the year. I have limited my trades to 3 spreads max for each trade and a dollar limit of 300 dollars. So far I am up 15k in two earnings cycles. I also trade futures intraday but this is a nice little side hustle that only takes me less than an hour a day and 3 hours on the weekends. I am working on developing a list of names that I will continue to trade which will reduce the weekend research over time. I will NEVER buy an option in hopes of the stock moving in any particular direction. I am sticking to selling them with protection in place.

In 2023 Canada produced 10.4 million gallons of maple syrup, and the Canadian Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve currently holds 10 million pounds out of the potential 133 million pounds. This equates to just under 1 million gallons. Pouring 5% of Canadians maple syrup down your throat would require you to consume \~570,000 gallons of Maple Syrup, a pretty sweet death if you ask me. If you meant only the syrup that hasn't been bottled and sold, it would be a paltry 45,450 gallons, which is still a pretty sweet death. In the meantime, while the negotiations for this transaction take place. Us regarded folk want calls on BGS, KHC, CAG, and SJM.

Value investing is a good long term strategy. Where your dad failed was the fact that Apple was at a P/E ratio of around 15 and Microsoft at around 20 in 2017, and both these companies were super strong, good moat, growing businesses. That's value. You brought up SPG, SJM, and WBA. All of these companies were trading around or higher multiples during this time, with a worse moat, almost no revenue growth, and a less diverse strong business. Your dad doesn't sound like a value investor, he sounds like an fool. Buy great businesses at good prices, and you'll do well.

SJM, CASY, ASO and some other random earnings. Sitting on CAT 225 and 227.5 calls, expiring friday, hoping for a continuation after the immense buying that was going on Friday, already up about 80% already from my entry. Looking at T-Mobile and AT&T calls to swing into mid week after this bs news about Amazon giving out free cell service to prime customers fizzles back out and they recover after being rocked Friday. Dish is up huge on the rumor but they're being removed from the sp500 and that is pretty bullish for them in the near term. I would do puts but I don't think they're worth risk on the low price needing a huge move. Lots of weird options flow that I'm still looking at. Big calls on Friday for PANW will pay off huge Monday. They're being added to the sp500 so it might be a continuation at this new price range after a slight dip monday as funds are now forced to add the stock to their portfolios.

Ya those articles are useless. They are written for people with no market literacy. And if someone does not bother to take the time to learn what all the acronyms mean, and how to compare them, well noone can save them from themselves. The article does not actually state the data for any of the key things you should look at. Even a automated bot can just state PE, PEG, Dividend Payout Ratio, and maybe a few others to make a reasonable first glance at a stock. I have certainly used one of those automated articles to flag a stock for further consideration. The only thing the article even mentioned is PE. Which is the first place I look, but you can't stop there. And the statement it made provided no information. Im not going to do any analysis. I already own PEP and afew others. But just for interest, and to show you can't look only at PE. Some of these companies are flat out worth a higher PE. PE ratios KO: 27.1 PEP: 25.6 K: 16.1 KHC: 42.9 GIS: 17.1 SJM: 29.7
