Question about AMKT 'Crypto ETF'

Mentions

r/CryptoCurrencySee Comment

Hey man, thank you, that means a lot: I don't think anyone has noticed and definitely no one has ever reached out. As someone who's lost someone to the disease, I thank you for taking the time to encourage a stranger. We've all been given much, it's a privilege to give back a little. I repeated the AMKT vs. Top Ten friendly competition this year and am gearing up to make another contribution to the MJF Foundation in the coming weeks. Wishing you and your loved ones a very happy Christmas and new year season.

No easy way to grab the total market or Top 100 at this point that I'm tracking. AMKT captures 15 of the Top Cryptos, otherwise you'd have to do it manually like I do for these Experiments

You asked if anyone did index investing and no one mentioned me? That hurts, r/cc, that really stings ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sleep) I'm not market cap based, but rather an even 10% across the board. Check out my FAQs (https://toptencryptoindexfund.com/about) if you want more details. AMKT is market cap based and rebalanced quarterly. AMKT's underperformance is an anomaly, first time in 23 months my Top Ten has been in the lead, a surprising turn of events in November as AMKT historically crushes my ROI. This month it's because the outsized performance of the Dino Coins (ADA and XRP) and something I expect to settle back down to normal in the coming months, especially as they regularly rebalance.

This is amazing! I created a post last week asking if anyone did market cap based investing. I understand you didn’t quite do that but are you able to “paper trade” if you did market cap based too 10? Theory is that outside the 10, you risk getting the rug pulled which is why AMKT isn’t performing as well.

Yeah, thanks, interesting what's coming out these days! I noticed Coinbase50 as well as CoinMarketCap100. As far as I can tell, these are designed to track the entire market only, but can't be easily purchased at this time. For an operational and buyable all crypto market product, check out AMKT, which I compare to my Top Ten (middle of the post).

It sounds like we're similar: I started these Experiment trying to recreate how I normally invest: broad based low cost index funds. I can't comment on your specific circumstance, but if you think crypto will go up over time, not a horrible idea to get some exposure to it. How you do that is up to you: you can do all in BTC and/or ETH, diversify a bit like me, or capture the entire crypto market cap by buying an all crypto market cap token like AMKT or similar. But - I tell my friends to truly/honestly come to terms with the fact that it could all go to zero. If your financial life is in good enough order that you'd be fine it you lost all your crypto investments, then consider going for it. Be prepared for some heart attacks though. I was down -88% after my first year of this (2018) and -80% after the second year... Best of luck!

Ser, there's a token for that: AMKT, the total crypto market token is weighted and rebalanced every quarter.

Excellent question ser! I’ve thought about this quite a bit: what I’m after is a total crypto vs. total stock market comparison (when I started, I had to do this manually, there was no such thing as a total crypto stock market token like AMKT or similar). Tracking the Top Ten Cryptos isn’t perfect, but historically make up about 70-90% of the total market. If I only tracked the Top Ten S&P 500 by weight, I would only be tracking about 22% of the S&P Index. A more fair comparison is the entire S&P 500, which accounts for 75% of the entire US market. Still imperfect comparing 70%-90% of one thing vs. 75% of another, but still hopefully close enough to be useful.

Good points. I'm a big proponent of DCA, even if these Experiments are uber slow DCA (just once a year). Have you ever messed around with [dcabtc.com](http://dcabtc.com) ? That's a fun tool... For me, I was trying to recreate what I was mainly doing in trad markets: capturing all of crypto. I chose to equally weight (10%) each, so it wasn't a perfect match, but I thought hopefully it'd be interesting/instructive for the community. AMKT, the total crypto market cap token, does a better job at crypto market reflection (they weight and rebalance every quarter) and have therefore significantly outperformed my homemade Top Ten Portfolios the last two year (by 3x or 4x last time I snapshotted).

Good question. When you look at the combined Experiments over the seven years I've been doing this, that's where you get those numbers: 198% Top Ten vs 66% SP500 on the combined portfolios. Even better, MUCH better, would be actually capturing the entire crypto market cap since then (which was my goal in the first place) through a total crypto market cap like AMKT or similar.

Thanks for sharing, u/cconnorss! I think there's a huge lesson here for all r/cc: don't panic, have conviction, \*be patient\*. There's so much hype in crypto, it's easy to get lost in the noise, especially at first. DCA is a great strategy as well, just like in traditional markets. Diversification as well. This really is apparent in my 2023 and 2024 Experiments when I compare my Top Ten (always equally weighted at 10%) vs. the cap weighted AMKT, the total crypto market token, which has very easily out performed my Top Ten the last two years, by far....

Big congrats for getting back to the green! The above data is based on a 1 Nov snapshot, so I expect more than just two cryptos in this group to be in positive territory when I take the next snapshot (1 Dec). Well done, IMHO, it's hard to go wrong with DCA, depending on what you pick of course. Or just try to capture the entire market the best you can with AMKT or similar (see my 2023 and 2024 Experiments for how that's going - spoiler, AMKT's embarrassing both portfolios pretty bad).

It sounds good but 50 is WAY too many and rebalancing quarterly is absolutely nuts in crypto. It should be by the hour 😂 They should do like a meme "ETF" and a "real" ETF for like top 30 and rebalance biweekly or so. There is a token that tracks coins, AMKT, it says 25 coins but I don't see where it says which coins

Hm, yes, definitely interesting to crunch those numbers, or perhaps for a side Experiment. I do buy today, by the way...every January 1st, I make another $1k investment in the 'new' Top Ten. [Here](https://toptencryptoindexfund.com/tracking-2024-top-10-cryptocurrencies-month-8)'s the latest 2024 Top Ten, featuring (I think) an interesting comparison to a Total Crypto Market Cap Token (**AMKT),** which has significantly. outperformed my homemade Index two years in a row. But the initial intent of this Experiment was to put together a homemade Total Crypto Market Index Fund...excluding BTC would be a massive oversight in trying to achieve that goal.

Yep, tried to mirror how I invest in normal markets: boring, long term, broad based index funds over timing the market and stock picking. Humans (myself included) aren't great at stock picking and day trading, but I figured, over time, crypto go up, right? These Experiments are my attempt to ride that wave by capturing the gainz of the entire market. I don't do as well as a total market cap token like **AMKT** or similar, but hey, not bad for minimal (though consistent) effort

I guess I'm committed to this approach - I have been repeating the strategy every year since 2018, so I have 7 concurrent Top Ten Experiments going right now. Good question though. I'm a fan of diversification and trying to capture the gains of the entire market (both in traditional investing and crypto), so if I were starting from scratch today I would probably try to invest similarly. My assumption is over time all of crypto is headed in one direction so trying to ride that wave without over speculating, which humans aren't really good at and I frankly don't have a lot of free time to invest in perfectly studying the market. Interestingly, the last few years I've been comparing my Top Ten to a total crypto market cap token (**AMKT**) which has been doing a better job of mirroring the market - it's vastly outperforming my Top Ten the last few years: Last year it doubled the ROI of my Top Ten Portfolio, so far this year it has tripled my ROI. Check out my latest 2024 Top Ten Experiment post if you want more details: [https://toptencryptoindexfund.com/tracking-2024-top-10-cryptocurrencies-month-7/](https://toptencryptoindexfund.com/tracking-2024-top-10-cryptocurrencies-month-7/)

Great observation! Yes, on down months, because I include USDT, just as you predict, I do a bit better than AMKT. Another significant difference, weight. AMKT is cap weighted, mine is straight 10% to each coin. Results? At the end of 2023: +73% Top Ten vs. +141% AMKT YTD 2024: +10% Top Ten vs. +31% AMKT

Greatly appreciate all the work you put into this post! That makes sense on including USDT in 2019, and the nerd in me appreciates sticking with it for fair comparisons. My first thought was this would be why AMKT outperformed, but on the flip side including a stable coin might have offered some downside protection. So I checked out your 2022 :( and I am sorry. But honestly I am very glad you have included that since it’s ultimately still crypto, stable coins in 2024 might be more stable, but nothing is without risk in crypto.

Good question. I do crunch those numbers from time to time, here they are from the last time I did, a few months ago: As of 1 Apr 2024: * 2018 Top Ten Portfolio: +28% for the Top Ten vs. +359% for the total market cap * 2019 Top Ten Portfolio: +549% for the Top Ten vs. +1975% for the total market cap  * 2020 Top Ten Portfolio: +822% for the Top Ten vs. +1292% for the total market cap  * 2021 Top Ten Portfolio: +250% for the Top Ten vs. +241% for the total market cap * 2022 Top Ten Portfolio: -32% for the Top Ten vs. +19% for the total market cap * 2023 Top Ten Portfolio: +129% for the Top Ten vs. 232% for the total market cap * 2024 Top Ten Portfolio: +42% for the Top Ten vs. 52% for the total market cap When I started this Experiment in Jan 2018, the Top Ten represented about 90% of the crypto market. The total crypto market cap token **AMKT**, which I compare to my Top Ten in this post, is a good proxy for the entire market as well.

Thanks for the kind words. In this case, the Reddit filters got my post, so it got buried. I may try to resubmit...and excellent point, always more attention during a bull! lol Good question, hard to tell. Take a look at the last chart, the blue is crypto. You can see it started picking up in late 2020, peaked about a year later, had quite a wild ride in between. If that holds true this time, we're probably looking at the start of that period now. But I suck at timing the market lol hence my effort to capture the entire cryptosphere through indexing. A token like AMKT is trying to do the same, basically Do Nothing, assuming you believe crypto will increase over time...

Agreed, definitely for the class of 2022. And not a bad approach overall, nothing wrong with going all in on BTC, and overall my personal top holding. Interesting through, this is one of 7 Top Ten portfolios since 2018, so when looking at the Experiments in aggregate, BTC ends up in third place behind BNB and ETH. Also interesting, over this same time period, the Total Crypto Market outperforms BTC as well, and my Top Ten Portfolios for that matter. This is something I'm tracking more closely this year by comparing my Top Ten to **AMKT**, a total market cap token. Last time I crunched the numbers, at least, which was about a month ago....

I genuinely think nearly this entire sub is sleeping on $AMKT. Anyone who's just DCA-ing or buying some split of BTC and ETH should take a look at it because it's easily the safest **long-term** investment you can do in crypto right now. If you're buying shitcoins looking to 10x or 100x or whatever, carry on and you do you. But if you're buying crypto today to cash out in 10 years time, I think the argument for AMKT is a compelling one and each one of these updates just reinforces that opinion.

Slight miscommunication: I was asking about buying AMKT, not a Bitcoin ETF (didn’t know that was a thing). I went to the AMKT website and couldn’t figure out how to actually buy it. For now I’m buying a small amount of each of the top 15, but I don’t have time to manage it. AMKT would be perfect for me. My personal stock portfolio is up over 18% because it’s 80% ETF’s. Maybe 90%. And a few choice individual stocks. It’s too much work managing individual stocks unless that’s what you do for a living.

Thanks, ser! I don't pretend my Experiments are perfect, but hopefully still useful. When I started this in 2018, my intent was to capture the entire crypto market and compare to the entire stock market. No easy way to capture all of crypto in 2018 lol, but I tried my best. It's a great question. I guess most people are still under the delusion that they can beat the market in the long term. I guess it makes sense, with all the hype in crypto and all the crypto twitters bragging about their Ws, especially in a bull. But of course, those same people never share their losses :) **AMKT** is an interesting option for the set it and forget it types that have more of a long term outlook, probably not much so to the hyperactive trader types chasing quick gainz.

It was thanks to one of your posts that I discovered AMKT and I'm shocked more people aren't talking about it on this sub, in fact it seems to get dismissed almost immediately. Yet here we are, showing that there's something to investing in the market as a whole rather than specific coins.

I've thought about it in the past, but then I eventually default back to "Buy more BTC or specific crypto X" instead. I just felt more comfortable with specific projects than spreading things out. If I were wanting to diversify, I could see investing in a token like AMKT after more research. Unfortunately, it's a moot point because some time in between my last look at them and now they stopped offering direct sales to US customers - thanks SEC! There's always Uniswap, I guess....

I don't trust it. I would need to research it more to trust it. What if there is a security issue with the AMKT token. What if it does not hold its value. Perhaps these are non-risks, but I am not willing to take that risk. BTC and ETH are relatively safe plays. And I can play around with other alts with a small portion of my investments. For example, I can invest in the Cosmos, Solana, and Ethereum ecosystems to farm airdrops. If I just went with AMKT, there would be no airdrop farming.

Mentions:#AMKT#BTC#ETH
r/CryptoCurrencySee Comment

AMKT is an interesting project unlike 99.9% of crypto which is just degen pump and dumps. I think the reason why it isn't that popular is simply because you can get roughly the same performance by just holding BTC or a mix of BTC and ETH. AMKT is about 67% BTC & ETH. The whole market largely follows BTC. On the other extreme are people looking for 10,000 : 1 shitcoin lotto tickets which obviously won't have exposure in AMKT. Even if one of the elements of AMKT did surge the other 13 coins are a combined 33% so an average of <3%. If one of them doubled relative to BTC it would barely move the needle. Now don't get me wrong I think it is interesting with algorithm coin issuance and redemption and maybe in the future as the market matures it will get more traction.

Or rebalancing? Or selling and replacing a Top Ten dropout coin? A: Weighting is interesting, but to be beginner friendly, I went for an even 10% allocation when I started six years ago and have kept it up for consistency’s sake. Weighting would also lead to the rebalancing question, which is a bit advanced for this experiment. Plus with only $100 investments, fees would eat me alive. Similar to selling dropouts and buying ascending coins. There’s so much movement in crypto, not worth the fees.

I'm genuinely surprised more folks aren't talking about amkt. I'd never heard of it until it was mentioned in [one of these posts](https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/19bbkvm/i_bought_1k_of_the_top_10_cryptos_on_january_1st/) about the guy buying the top-10 cryptos each year and tracking them. For those unaware, it's sort-of a meta-token, a bit like an ETF - it's minted from the top 25 cryptos and automatically rebalances the weighing by marketshare. I really like amkt as a concept, let it do all the heavy lifting tracking the crypto industry and you can just sit back and forget about it. Track the market as a whole instead of a single coin. If BTC shoots up and leaves ETH in the lurch, it'll automatically rebalance. Likewise if ETH shoots up instead, it'll rebalance then as well. So my steer is that instead of trying to diversify or pick a single crypto to go all-in on, consider AMKT.

r/CryptoCurrencySee Comment

Based on this, do you recommend regular users to go with something like AMKT (Alongside Crypto Market Index), or follow it, that rebalances its portfolio on a monthly basis or just go buckwild trying to moonshot? Being in this part of the field, do you recommend any crypto indexes? I know holding the assets is better but means nothing when what you hold loses 80% of its value. Looking forward to your response.

Correct! At this point in the Experiments, going all in on BTC would beat my Top Ten approach, except in 2021 (My Top Ten portfolio, ETH, BNB, ADA, and XRP have all outperformed BTC since 1Jan2021). To say "only BTC" is a fine strategy, but picking ETH and BNB 2019-2021, you'd be doing a bit better. I'm personally horrible at picking and can't be researching all day (normal job, family, etc.) so, in the spirit of indexing, trying to capture the gains of the entire market through this homemade approach. Check my results vs. **AMKT**, which is a bit different in that it's weighted (i.e. more BTC and ETH) and reconstituted every quarter.

r/CryptoCurrencySee Comment

This guy gets it: humans are notoriously bad at picking stocks in the long term. Capturing the entire market, as this Experiment attempts to do, is a way to ride crypto as a whole (for those who believe it is up only in the long term). Interesting to compare mine to **AMKT** (total crypto market token) as well, which almost doubled my ROI in 2023, at 1/10th of the effort :)

Sorry, fren, I'm pretty bad, like most humans, at stock/crypto picking. The spirit of this Index Fund is to capture the gains of the entire crypto market instead of creating a portfolio of specific coins. If you're looking into a similar Index Fund model, you can try to recreate this Top Ten Experiment or look into something like the **AMKT** total crypto market token.

Thanks for the quick reply. I read about AMKT and this is the exact type of asset I have been looking for. It seems to provide a similar strategy to investing in ETFs instead of buying individual stocks. Long term it's the best thing for 90% of the investors. However, I have one question regarding the rebalancing of AMKT. I read on the website that it's being rebalanced quarterly. Do you think that this is frequent enough, taking in regard the volatility and dynamics of the crypto market? In 3 months a lot could change. Or is there a good reason for the quarterly rebalancing?

It's an interesting question. In 2018 at least, the Top Ten represented 88% of the entire market, so it wasn't worth it at the time. These days, it's probably a bit less, but I don't have the time or energy to do all 100 :) A simpler/lazy/do nothing solution would be to buy everything through **AMKT** or similar, a token designed to capture the gains of the entire crypto market

Sorry about all the downvotes, I think your comment was reasonable. I'm certainly not trying to mislead. I'm very transparent about my allocations. Maybe you mean something else? I take your point though: equal distribution is not quite like a typical index fund. If you're interested in such a project, check out my [2023 Top Ten Experiment](https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/18i8o1g/i_bought_1k_of_the_top_10_cryptos_on_january_1st/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3), where I compare my Top Ten to a weighted token called **AMKT** which is designed to capture the gains of the entire market. That's much more of what you describe. And, as it turns out, much more successful, as you predict: **AMKT** is beating my 2023 Top Ten +103% to +39% (as of 1 Dec).

True, and good point. You'll see a lot of "I 100x'd x coin" on twitter, but they never share when they guess wrong :) Another approach, if you believe in crypto overall as a sector going up: capture the gains of the entire market, like I have here with my Top Ten Experiment or what products like **AMKT** are designed to do...

Yeah, this isn't **the** way to invest in crypto, it's **a** way. What's turning out to be a better way: invest in all of crypto. Check out my total market cap vs. Top Ten bonus stats in the comments or compare vs. a total market cap coin like **AMKT**: really no contest. In my non-crypto life, I'm too busy to worry about stock picking (and I'm horrible at it, as all humans are) so I'm a big fan of set in and forget it low cost total market index funds. That's what I tried to recreate here, was really interested how it would do against the S&P. Hopefully the comparison is interesting/educational.

Nooice! Stay in touch, let me know how it goes. I'm satisfied with my returns over the year. Even better if I'd captured the entire market cap, using **AMKT** or similar...

Thanks Mr or Mrs Cat! Correct, the total market cap performs better than my Top Ten every year except 2021, but if history is any indication, we'll see that flip soon. Check out the Top Ten vs. **AMKT** section of my post as well, it's a token designed to capture the gains of the entire market - it's doing very well this year 103% vs. 39%. Stables: I include everything in the total market cap comparison

AMKT token is a really good option for peeps that just want to buy the market and chill

AMKT token is like a crypto ETF it tracks the top 15 cryptos. I haven't invested in it yet but I might start. I just learned about it and still researching. It seems like an easy way to get overall crypto coverage. But then again Bitcoin controls the market for the most part so it's kinda already an "ETF".

Not lately, but you could probably mess around on [dcabtc.com](https://dcabtc.com) to check. Although my suspicion is that BTC would finish behind ETH and BNB. Haven't crunched the numbers though. On of the real eye openers for me as I've been running these Experiments is how the total market has performed. Here: Since Jan 2018: +128% for the total market cap Since Jan 2019: +929% for the total market cap Since Jan 2020: +590% for the total market cap Since Jan 2021: +69% for the total market cap Since Jan 2022: -41% for the total market cap Since Jan 2023: +65% for the total market cap Not bad for doing nothing. That assumes you'd be easily able to capture the entire market, which until recently wasn't really possible. But today there are products like **AMKT** that aim to do exactly that. Interesting times in crypto.

First off, warm welcome to r/CryptoCurrency! And to the Top Ten Experiments. Yeah, completely spot on there. My six concurrent Top Ten Portfolios (I started this in 2018) are admittedly very lazy. I just buy and hold. With only $100 invested in each, gas and trading fees would eat me up. I'm also very much unlike many indexes in that there's no weighting as well: I buy 10% of each coin. If you want to track a more thoughtful crypto index model, you might be interested to check out on my [2023 Top Ten ](https://toptencryptoindexfund.com/tracking-2023-top-10-cryptocurrencies-month-10/) series - I'm having a bit of a friendly competition comparing my Top Ten Portfolio to **AMKT**, a token designed to capture the gains of the entire market which is indeed weighted and indeed rebalanced (I believe every quarter). Spoiler alert - it's crushing my Top Ten approach so far in 2023, +86% to +27%

Excellent question. For better or for worse, and in an effort to keep it as fair as possible, I excluded dividends from the S&P side and the staking, interest, airdrops, etc. from the crypto side. Although, as I mentioned in a comment on my [2023 Top Ten update](https://toptencryptoindexfund.com/tracking-2023-top-10-cryptocurrencies-month-10/) \- I may revisit this approach now that **AMKT** (a token designed to capture the gains of the entire crypto market and to which I'm comparing my 2023 Top Ten Portfolio in 2023) is providing a 5% APR bonus through 2024, essentially creating a dividend. It might be interesting to next year to include dividend calculations for the S&P to allow for a more fair comparison.

Thank you, ser. Great question. I've considered factoring in dividends, but to be fair, I'd want to add in the staking, interest, airdrops, etc. from holding the crypto as well. In the end, I decided to keep it simple and exclude interest on both sides. That said, with **AMKT** providing 5% APR on their total market token, I might have to revisit this and factor in S&P's 1.5-2% APR to allow for a fair comparison...

AMKT token is already a thing. It tracks 25 cryptos. I just learned about it yesterday so I can't provide much more detail.

Hey there, thanks for the kind words! Check out some of the previous comments and play around with [dcabtc.com](https://dcabtc.com) to play around with the BTC only contingency. I set up these initially to compare my Top Ten Experiment to the complete crypto market cap. You can definitely pull out different coins to compare, but I was after the gains of the entire market. I'm not even sure BTC would outperform ETH or BNB given the rules of my experiments. Maybe I should crunch the numbers, hmmm... But, yes, started off as a way to capture all of the crypto sectory. That's why it's particularly interesting to me to compare my work to tokens like **AMKT** this year...

r/CryptoCurrencySee Comment

Yeah, that's a lot of work :) might as well track an asset like **AMKT,** which covers 95%ish of the total crypto market...

I believe **AMKT** is available on Ethereum, Polygon, and Arbitrium. The official website should point you in the right direction: https://amkt.com/

Good question, and always a good idea to be suspicious of yield that can't be explained! I believe the 5% comes from a separate community fund to support the awareness of **AMKT**... Yep, just looked it up for you, ser. According to [https://amkt.com/match:](https://amkt.com/match:) *Match is not a staking or liquidity mining program. Match is coming from a pool of limited AMKT set aside to promote the network and as an incentive to learn about AMKT*
