Almost exactly like you do nowadays. Though you didn't have 12 words phrase, but you had to backup the wallet.dat to usb drive. If you download the bitcoin core client from bitcoin.org, and start it, the experience is quite similar what it was already in 2009. The interface looks maybe a bit nicer but the basics are very similar. Once you had wallet set up, you typically wanted to buy coins from somewhere. I guess majority went to mt gox, but there was also other exchanges, most of them nowadays gone. One way was just to buy from random online PPL, there was an IRC channel. Or you went to a btc meetup, and bought from there with cash. Nowadays you can also go to meetup and I think ppl there are happy to sell you small amount of BTC to get started. The thing is, that even very early bitcoin clients still work nowadays. There hasn't been much backwards incompatible changes AFAIK.

I'm in Poland right now last year inflation was 16% it's around 6% now it's a eu member, and average eu inflation is 2%.
