> might have to do that multiple times within a single script bc there's cap on block of data you can push per op code Yes, got that in the paper you linked me > arb data you push as inputs into a script locking a utxo isn't part of hash you sign so anyone can take your transaction Noted. Also saw that under "malleability" in reference document > optional solution to any-can-spend is to only put enough sats into the output to cover the following tx miner fee and have only 0 value OP_RETURN as output (entire utxo goes to fee), then can skip paying for signatures I've done 2 of these in the past, paying 1 Sat/byte fee with a TXO which just happened to be the exact amount to cover the fee. But I'm exploring outside OP_RETURN, partly for curiosity, and partly because OP_RETURN is limited by policy to 1 per transaction > put the data & drops into the script itself which you would have to provide in both p2sh and p2wsh The document covers doing this in P2SH, and provides examples. Before this I had never seen any examples which weren't pay-to-fake-pubkey, pay-to-fake-pkhash or op_return

> The checksum is built in to the protocol. Wallets don't get extra credit for implementing a standard feature. I concur here. If a wallet failed to implement the checksum algorithm for addresses, that should be considered a bug. The specifications for all the post-Satoshi era address formats (BIP13 for P2SH, BIP173 for P2WPKH and P2WSH, BIP350 for P2TR and future segwit addresses) all spell out the rules for verifying addresses. > If a wallet didn't check the validity of an address before broadcasting a transaction it would be dropped by the miners anyways. This is false. Checksums don't exist at the protocol level. It is perfectly possible for a buggy wallet to perform the checksum validation incorrectly, and then end up with a valid transaction. This has in fact happened in the past, and funds have been burned this way. > Do yourself a favor and read the whitepaper. It's only 9 pages. No need to use such a tone when people are just trying to learn. The whitepaper also doesn't even mention the concept of address to begin with.

Sure but that's a tricky topic. In general, there are new database technologies popping up all the time (like now graph databases) while when you zoom out a little you'll notice that these are often old ideas with new marketing [https://people.cs.umass.edu/\~yanlei/courses/CS691LL-f06/papers/SH05.pdf](https://people.cs.umass.edu/~yanlei/courses/CS691LL-f06/papers/SH05.pdf) Similarly for crypto. There are new coins and apps every day but the fundamental questions and tradeoffs remain.

I don't want to go into technical arguments, the issues of channels and online watchers has been discussed ad-nausea. I'm more interested in actual UX, because the next millions of users won't really care about nerdy debates, and that is where I think BCH will have its chance to shine. We have 2 countries where we can compare El Salvador (BTC) and St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Maarten (BCH) - their MP takes salary in it, pays for dinner using it, and hear him [here talking](https://youtu.be/IybKAL7C_Sg?t=7760) about how they're underbanked and avoid being ripped off by bank fees by using BCH, so a real problem for real people is being solved, they can tolerate volatility when ATM fees are $7 per transaction. Btw, I'm working on some technical developments for BCH: enabling 256-bit P2SH addresses (BTC already has something like that with P2WSH) and native tokens. With May '22 upgrade we already made Script much more powerful and now some pretty cool contracts can be done with Script. By this time next year I hope we'll be able to go after Cardano!

r/BitcoinSee Comment

how is this different from P2SH? you could have an addr Z in the script, no?

I stupidly used eToro to buy some bitcoin way back (I was already familiar with other exchanges, but I got suckered into a signup promotion that never panned out) At the time, I don't believe it was possible to move coins in/out of the platform, but now it appears as though there is an 'eToro Money' app that will allow me to move my BTC off the main platform and into their wallet, and then from there move it to my hardware wallet. I downloaded the app and took a look at the receive address it generates -- it starts with '33' From what I've looked up, this is a 'P2SH' or 'Compatibility Address' > This address type is widely supported and can be used to send funds to both Legacy and Segwit addresses. This makes it a smart choice for a casual user who is generating their own address. Sounds like I shouldn't run into any trouble sending to my Segwit HW wallet addresses then? Anyone done an eToro withdrawal? How'd it go?

Fair, I figured maybe you were asking to check to ensure someone is not being scammed as I do note I've up voted you in the past, indicating something you've said has been positive or helpful. Still, not a great question to be had when there is so much scamming about in crypto subs - state the reason why you're asking when you ask to ensure the point is not seen as malicious. Anyway, I was trying to send from a bech32 to a P2SH address, yes, and was unsure if this would work as I understand, for example, you wouldn't send P2SH to non-segwit/legacy addresses. All sorted though. Managed to talk to ledger support and get everything done.

Point taken. I only asked because people often think they need to move bitcoin when in fact they don't, e.g. "because of quantum computing." Didn't mean to invade your privacy. What do you mean by a "323 address"? P2SH addresses start with 3, is that what you're talking about?

Actually it WAS designed to build apps on top of. Bitcoin has had a smart contract system built-in from Day One, but it was nerfed due to unfixable security issues. Ever hear of P2SH? That means “pay to script hash” and all Bitcoin transactions are actually scripts that get run. Ethereum did not invent smart contracts. Satoshi did.

Zero is a smart contract running on a blockchain, like the P2PKH/P2SH/P2WSH/P2WPKH/etc smart contract securing the bitcoin in your wallet right now. There's also a lot that can go awry when using these kinds of scripts: your wallet could be using an insecure source of randomness to generate your private keys, your computer could bit-flip and paste the wrong address (which you might not notice before your payment is confirmed), your wallet app could malfunction and enter the wrong address, you could accidentally pay a massive fee that empties your wallet, etc etc. Yes, Zero adds _more_ that could go wrong on top of the usual pile of things that could go wrong when using bitcoin, but compared to using a CeFi company that is a black box subject to government control and a huge target for inside jobs etc I think Zero makes a reasonable set of tradeoffs to make low-cost finance available to Bitcoiners. If you're not in the market for bitcoin finance that's fine, but if you are then make an honest comparison to the alternatives and I think you'll see Zero has a great risk/reward profile.

>By any measure, OP_CTV is less rushed than taproot. No. I don't mean rushed as in developed yesterday, but the activation is rushed. Taproot was discussed for a looooong time, so definitely not as rushed. Honestly, I wasn't even aware of this change until the controversy happened, bitnwas well aware of taproot. If nothing else, this is rushed because people haven't had the time to digest it. >> Bitcoin Core is not merging the change > >Pull requests often take many years to get merged in to Bitcoin Core. This is not uncommon. But they never happen AFTER. (UASF is an exception here.) Think about another aspect: Core HAS to merge orbit loses reference client status. That's quite the aggressive move. No surprise people see this as an attack. >Something being merged into bitcoin core is not the same thing as community consensus. And something not having been merged in yet is also not the same thing as "lacking consensus". But it is at this stage. If developers do not agree with it, it doesn't have consensus, period. Same goes for community. Maybe it just needs more time to digest, but definitely no consensus.currently. Not to mention the activation - ST by miners and eff everyone else. That's the way an attack would work, if you wanted to soft fork some shit in without the users having any say. It's just not the way to go. >> which approach is best is far from settled > >This is true for a good many things in bitcoin, possibly everything. is far from settled. We shouldn't have to find the uncontested best approach before adding something to bitcoin. Bitcoin implements changes on "rough consensus". Look it up. In short, it doesn't mean everyone agrees, but it does mean that all concerns have been addressed or are considered minor by the technical people. And this happened for every change so far. Not true here. >It is perfectly reasonable for one relatively safe covenant opcode to be added now, and another more powerful, more complex covenant opcode to be added in 4 years. No it's not. Not if the consequences are not fully understood. >That's how all bitcoin development has been up til now. We didn't wait to create P2SH addresses because we might one day have segwit addresses. We didn't wait to create segwit addresses because one day we might have taproot. We didn't wait for BLS signatures to be more mature so we could use them in taproot. None of these had any, or significant drawbacks. Future changes just used what was there, which has been put in place after rough consensus has been achieved. >This is a common refrain I've been hearing. Unforunately its very circular. If everyone rejecting this is is only doing so because other people are rejecting this for the same reason, there's no path to activation. It might be common, but it's the reality of consensus. What you say is an explanation for why there's no consensus. True as it might be, it doesn't change the fact there's no consensus. I understand this is frustrating, I really do. But that's how bitcoin managed to stay true to the same principles that spawned it. No consensus changes are made if there's no consensus for it. That's bitcoin.

> Good discussion, thanks for posting. : ) > What is rushed is the implementation and activation method [The implementation](https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/21702) has not actually been rushed. The implementation has been around for over a year. The spec has been basically unmodified for 2 years. OP_CTV is also significantly less complex than taproot. By any measure, OP_CTV is less rushed than taproot. I think the only reason people think activation is rushed is because OP_CTV just happened. And yet, they were developed basically simultaneously. What if OP_CTV were activated first? Would activating taproot now be "rushed"? > Bitcoin Core is not merging the change Pull requests often take many years to get merged in to Bitcoin Core. This is not uncommon. > which by very essence of consensus means it's lacking Something being merged into bitcoin core is not the same thing as community consensus. >Hint to you, EA doesn't need the FIFA license to produce their yearly football installment since the licensing rights to teams and players is not with FIFA. That is true, but at the same time it's likely that another SH will want to buy the license for FIFA considering how profitable the brand has been to EA. Moreover, EA is apparently keen to explore other avenues using the FIFA licence, such as video game tournaments and digital products like NFTs, while FIFA wants to limit the scope of the deal to pursue new opportunities itself. [https://www.eurogamer.net/new-report-says-fifa-wants-more-than-double-from-ea-to-renew-license](https://www.eurogamer.net/new-report-says-fifa-wants-more-than-double-from-ea-to-renew-license) Either EA backs out completely (next EA football game should still be under the FIFA name), jumps back in the FIFA-wagon or somebody else will likely fill its shoes. 2K Sports is the likely contender here.

> Specifically, as from what I read Taproot is in general slightly bigger for regular transactions Depending on the context, this can be true, but it is misleading. *Paying* to a taproot output is more expensive than paying to a P2PKH, P2SH, or P2WPKH output (yet, same cost as paying to P2WSH). *Spending* a taproot output using the key path (the common case) is cheaper than *any* standard construction so far. If you have both taproot outputs and inputs in a transaction, it'll typically be slightly more expensive than having no taproot at all, but that's not your decision. Changing to a taproot wallet changes the transaction inputs you create, as well as change outputs. But it's independent from whether or not your non-change outputs are taproot ones (that depends on the addresses your payment recipients give you).

>How to completely geek up on crypto Here is what I did: * I bought an ASIC miner and read about mining (best video: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVqD-\_QskW0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVqD-_QskW0)) * Ran my own full node (just compile a satoshi style core wallet - like BTC, LTC or Doge and open your ports) * Read "Mastering Bitcoin" and a book about blockchain tech * Interacted with my node using python (create & send transactions, checl balance, etc. - read about [RPC](https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/API_reference_(JSON-RPC))) * Compiled the core wallet myself and played with the source code (even merged something - [hurray](https://github.com/dogecoin/dogecoin/pull/2420/files)) * Created P2SH transactions (read [here](https://learnmeabitcoin.com/technical/p2sh)) * Ran a block explorer and a (testnet) solo mining pool (p2pool) * Extract the data from peers.dat * etc. Basically I tried to get into all basic aspects of Bitcoin (but I used Dogecoin instead) hands on. I am no crypto expert yet, but I probably know more stuff than most people I know offline - and I still learn everyday about crypto, since April 2019 (:

The details of transactions types are not written out in this paper. Page 2 and section 6 describes how transactions are processed. The original 4 types are; pay-to-public-key-hash (P2PKH), public-key, multi-signature (limited to 15 keys), pay-to-script-hash (P2SH). There is also data output (OP\_RETURN) but it's more of a data call and not a transaction. Taproot introduces 2 more: a single key with schnorrs and a multi key with schnorrs. The second types is what is garnering interest because it allows L2 smart contracts to have much greater flexibility in transacting.

Here is where we go down the rabbit hole. I find this topic to extremely interesting and started some research. My initial findings on Bitcoin addresses… “Altcoins like Dash, Litecoin or Dogecoin use other prefixes so that the addresses start with “L” (Litecoin), “X” (Dash) or “D” (Dogecoin). As these coins use the same cryptographic algorithm, you can use the same private and public keys to save coins in all these cryptocurrencies. Partly you can even store them on the same addresses. For example, Litecoin and bitcoin use the same prefix for P2SH addresses – 05 – so that it is possible to store both Bitcoin as Litecoin at the same address.” Here is where shit gets convoluted, cryptography engineers are opening the door to storing the wrong coin in the address (in the context of using the same public and private key). I’ll find out how the Ethereum algorithm generates its address space.

Dude, I actually really would have appreciated an NFT title. During the onset of COVID and the following SH\*TSTORM, California did not release my title to me for 8 months. I moved to Georgia and couldn't register my vehicle, so it sat for 8 MONTHS. The real issue is that I moved exactly when the Title was sent from my bank to the DMV instead of myself as well as COVID. For some reason, California feels an autocratic approach is best for the DMV situations and forbids owners to receive the title before they sprinkle some fairy dust on it or something. It is impressive how terrible a combination of the government and State Farm can truly be. I was not lazy - my lien holder (State Farm) sent the title to California DMV where they just closed up shop. I called my "local agent" probably twice a week at least, went in person multiple times. Surprisingly, I am not actually authorized to speak with the behind-the-scenes lien holder and my agent had no control at all. Only a State Farm agent can call the State Farm Bank (WTF). It is an awful game of telephone between 2 parties that couldn't give less of a sh\*t. State Farm was not willing to take back the title from the CA DMV. There was actually no leverage to be had and they gave me no leads. This actually went on for 4 months until they finally explained that they weren't actually going to do anything. I was essentially reverse-catfished by my agent and bank, they really lead me on because a Georgia-based agent and the State Farm Bank apparently don't understand California laws. On top of all of this, the CA DMV phone lines just hung up on you at that time. No message, no robot, even no in-person visits to the branch locations. I had to find some god-forsaken back channel phone number that was direct to somebody important at the DMV or something. My mom told me about this number and wouldn't divulge who it came from. My best guess is a lawyer she knows in CA who wasn't supposed to give out that number. I'm serious, this phone number doesn't exist online and I think it was the backend of the CA DMV that only deals with backend of the banks. Their first suggestion from the CA DMV person was that I go to California in-person to the capitol/headquarters office (Sacramento), which is just disgusting. That would be a thousand-dollar trip to fix f\*ck-ups that had no cause from me. Also, I just started a new job and didn't have the vacation time to arrive at government-hours to a cross-continent location. The real solution was a check that had to be mailed to the Sacramento DMV headquarters with a form that was essentially an "explanation" note. The real form was something like name, vehicle description, registration number, and an entire half-page box of "summary". It took 2 months from the letter sent to the Title arriving at my new address. 8 months total, with 6 months of wrangling cats at a POS bank and so many futile attempts to call the normal CA DMV. If there was an electronic form of ownership, I would have saved a lot of frustration.

Bitcoin does do smart contracts in a limited way and there are layer2/sidechain solutions like Stacks and RGB. From the very beginning Bitcoin has [had the ability to perform a limited set of operations](https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Script). Over time (in some people's minds extremely slowly) Bitcoin has added things like [P2SH, CLTV, etc.](https://blog.bitmex.com/bitcoins-consensus-forks/). However, from the bitcoin.it wiki: > Bitcoin uses a scripting system for transactions. Forth-like, Script is simple, stack-based, and processed from left to right. It is intentionally not Turing-complete, with no loops. [Ethereum's EVM blockchain aims to be Turing Complete](https://academy.binance.com/en/glossary/turing-complete), which basically means given enough time and resources you could compute anything, although it might cost a lot of gas. Conventionally this has come to mean *smart contracts*, but you can still do a lot more with Bitcoin script than you can with something like Monero or Nano which is basically just send another address coins and maybe attach a little bit of data.

It's not a well-advertised part of Script, I guess. Everyone's busy doing P2PKH and P2SH, which work just fine for everyday transactions. hashlock/timelock come into play for a lot of neat things you've heard of though. Atomic swaps, various join techniques like CoinSwap (**not** the altcoin, the process; look up Maxwell and Belcher), and so on. I think LN channel openings. In your case, you have to do things a bit different from the protocols above, since you own the destination address (so you can spend out of it at any time). The UTXOs need to have a different scriptpubkey than usual and there can't be any other way to spend the UTXOs except the height lock.

Iirc lost keys and non-existent addresses are not the same. Also non-existent addresses is probably not the best word to describe what u/pipnasti is talking about. Lost keys are when there is a key to unlock funds stored in an address but the keys have been lost. Non-existent addresses are addresses that cannot be accessed by any private key. Since hash functions such as SH256 and RIPEMD160 are most likely to be neither surjective or injective, there are some values (addresses) that cannot be produced given an input key. Sort of similar to how the function to get x-only public keys is not injective because negation byte is removed.

A redeemscript doesn't care which UTxOs it redeems, but a UTxO cares which redeemscript redeems it. In fact the hash in P2SH and P2WSH is the hash of the redeemscript.

"Native SegWit" just means not masquerading witness outputs under the old P2SH script format. P2WPKH and P2WSH are "native SegWit" address types, and further, both are version-0 SegWit. P2TR is version-1 SegWit. Applications that only support SegWit v0 will not support sending to P2TR addresses.

You can identify the type of a bitcoin address by looking at the first letters of it. If it starts with "1", it's a legacy address. If it starts with "3", it's a P2SH address. If it starts with "bc1q", it's a native segwit and if the first 4 letters are "bc1p", it's a taproot address. 1 is going to be the most expensive. Make sure your friends wallet supports these.

No, the second outcome is not only more likely, it's inevitable. Proof of Work will always approach consuming as much energy use as possible while still profiting, that is the whole point. Also, it's not 1000x compared to existing SHA256 miners, it's 1000x compared to GPUs which aren't even used for SH256 mining anymore precisely because it's inefficient. It's just marketing.

How to identify a bitcoin address? You can identify the type of a bitcoin address by looking at the first letters of it. If it starts with "1", it's a legacy address which are the most expensive fee wise. If it starts with "3", it's a P2SH address. If it starts with "bc1q", it's a native segwit and if the first 4 letters are "bc1p", it's a taproot address. Where can I get a bitcoin address? You can generate a bitcoin address by clicking on "Receive" within your bitcoin wallet. You can create as many different bitcoin addresses as you want. For privacy reasons it is advised to not re-use an address. Do I have to change my bitcoin address? You do not have to change your bitcoin address. If you want to send your bitcoin to another address, you will have to do a regular transaction to the new address you have generated in your wallet. What bitcoin address should I use? Most bitcoin wallets default to bech32 (native segwit) addresses, which saves the highest amount of transaction costs. If your wallet let's you choose which type you want to use, you should use native segwit addresses.

They're used for P2WPKH (Pay-to-witness-public-key-hash) or P2WSH (Pay-to-witness-script-hash). The length if the address determines which.
