Gain minus loss = taxable amount. That's what you'd pay taxes on. Not clear about what your potential amounts are. You have to record which lot you are selling and long term gain/loss (1 year or more) and short term gain/loss do not mix. If you sell the first lot and record an investment loss you can subtract it from your other gains (LT or ST, as appropriate). You do not subtract the loss from your tax owed, obviously.

Mentions:#ST
r/BitcoinSee Comment

Don't assume you will get any forms. CB does not know your cost basis. Maybe you are selling bitcoins bought 2 years ago on Kraken. YOU must record all sales of, trades for anything, or paying for anything, your bitcoins. Then your tax prep app will calculate gains, LT or ST, and tell you how much tax to pay.

Probably too young to have known that, I'll explain The 68K was a CPU that equipped both the Amiga and the Atari computers. The Amiga's 68K was considered the superior machine and had its 68Knrunning at 7.14mhz (in pal region, was slightly different in NTSC). The Atari ST was... not very good, and had its 68000 running at 8mhz. So I really hope that if Bitcoin is a 68k, it's the 7.14mhz kind.

>I just did the napkin math to show you that 1000 fold is not enough to make even L2 economical during high-activity sessions on the main net. And you just ignore it? I'll respond to the napkin math now. The statistics show that the average transaction fee during the last bull market was around $12: [https://ycharts.com/indicators/ethereum\_average\_transaction\_fee](https://ycharts.com/indicators/ethereum_average_transaction_fee) 1,000x lower means 1.2 cents. >Transaction fee does. If it is too expensive, then it is only worthwhile to transact on high-return activities, i.e. gambling. That doesn't invalidate my point. I was addressing your sub-point that network effects in speculative activity are different than network effects in economically productive activity. They are not. Now, network effects may be different when it comes to high-fee activity and low-fee activity, but that's not the same argument you made. >You obviously don't understand the tech. How can a ledger run by a centralized sequencer with admin keys be more secure than a decentralized and permissionless validator set? You're actually correct: the temporary admin keys do make it less secure. But once it jettisons that, and, in terms of extra-Ethereum-dependencies, relies only on a Data Availability Committee (DAC), it will mean that the chain is as secure as Ethereum if the assumption that at least one member of the DAC is honest holds true. The centralized sequencer meanwhile can be bypassed with an L1 transactions, so is not a severe security risk. Although eventually, the sequencing should be decentralized as well. >If you understand computer science, you will know why. The bottleneck is ETH runs like a single-threaded CPU on the main net, because its execution layer is serial, while other alt L1s have adopted sharding acting like multi-threaded CPUs. It is like using an Intel Pentium 4 CPU in 2023 when everyone else is using i3/i5/i7 series. Rollups take computation off-chain, or compress the computation in the form of zk-\[ST\]ARK proofs. The Rollups themselves still have to do the full computation, and they adopt a parallelization friendly transaction model, like Fuel Network is doing with its UTXO-model. >That is another factually false statement. When these L2 go interoperable, they have to transfer funds between their smart contract accounts on the main net. When they do, they have to ask ETH validators to get involved and get slapped with a main net fee - danksharding won't help. The interoperability comes from bridging transactions to Ethereum Mainnet and other layer 2s being autonomously enforced by the Ethereum Virtual Machine, with no reliance on trusted third parties.

If you buy 1 in 2014, buy 4 in 2023 and sell 2 later in 2023, you can choose (in the US tax system) which lots to count as sold. You could record it as short term gain on 2, or LT on 1 and ST on 1. There are some conditions you'll need to adhere to; search the IRS site for details or talk to a tax preparer.

MEXC has closed deposit for moons now, citing "wallet maintenance", but withdrawals are still open. Looks the same with what they did to BRICKs; MEXC is now just probably trying to get rid of any moons in their hands before delisting the thing. It'll have an 'ST' mark there soon and then poof

Whenever MEXC lists a coin/token, they put it under what they call 'Innovation Zone', which just means they give it 60 days, after which they'll decide whether they will continue listing the token. Even days before the end of the 60-day period, MEXC closed BRICK deposits citing 'wallet maintenance' even though there was nothing wrong with Arb Nova and BRICKs, but still had withdrawals open. This was the reason BRICKs had a very different (a lot higher) price in there compared to Sushi and others, but no one could arbitrage it since deposits were closed. Then the 60-day period ended, it got an 'ST' tag immediately after (which simply means the listing is under review). They probably decided prior that they weren't going to continue listing it, probably due to low trading volume. Moons have already passed this 60-day period long ago and have since been classified as a 'regular' listing, so no need to worry about it. Of course, they could still put moons under review any time in the future in case they ever decide the trading volume isn't worth the effort.

All that makes sense. I guess the only reason why I want it to sit in ETH is to avoid the ST gains but it seems like since I swapped it the gains are already realized and I may as well sell off the ETH. I can easily calculate the cost basis because I know how much I purchased in ETH and then minus that from my total profit. Funny enough I had a 4k stake in CRO from a year ago which was worth like $350 now. I sold that stake which I then used to buy ETH. Selling that CRO will only help me because I sold it at a $-3650 loss. I can use that to offset some of these gains.

You realize a ST gain when you sell some crypto that you bought less than a year ago for a profit. It is a LT gain if you bought said crypto earlier than a year ago. Depending on your jurisdiction, the profit might be considered "realized" even if you didn't sell for fiat but swapped for a different crypto, because a crypto-to-crypto swap is considered as an event where you sell the first crypto (making a profit or a loss) and then buy the second one (establishing a new cost basis for it if you didn't have any, or updating the cost basis for it if you already held some). If I am not mistaken, that's the case for the US as well, meaning that letting that ETH sit won't make a difference on the ST gain taxes you already owe. If that ETH starts increasing in price and you sell for fiat or swap it for another crypto in longer than a year for profit, that'll be LT gain.

#Chainlink Con-Arguments Below is a Chainlink con-argument written by cryotosensei. > > Charles Hoskinson is the marmite in the crypto space. He has a brilliant mind and a straight-talking style, so depending on who you talk to, his achievements or lapses in character will be highlighted to you. Here are some examples. > > His Achievements: > - Co-founded the Ethereum blockchain alongside Vitalik Buterin. Briefly served as the CEO and helped to design the Initial Coin Offering (ICO) for Ethereum > - Founded Input Output Hong Kong (IOHK) with Ethereum comrade, Jeremy Wood, to build blockchain solutions for companies in the public and private sectors in 2015. Cardano was launched as a key project from IOHK in 2017. > - Co-founded Cardano with Jeremy Wood. Cardano is a third-generation blockchain that aims to be scalable, interoperable and sustainable by using a proof-of-stake protocol. Cardano has ambitious plans to empower these people in developing countries in Africa by affording them decentralized applications that enable them to manage their identity and governance and building in compliance procedures. > - Widely acknowledged to be a competent spokesperson who can advocate for cryptocurrencies. When he represented the crypto industry in front of the United States Congress a year ago, people generally felt that he gave a stellar performance for being sharp and eloquent. He argued passionately about how crypto should be categorised as a commodity if it is decentralised and classified as a security if it is not. Recently in 2023, he slammed politicians for blaming the US banking crisis on the crypto industry. > > Criticisms of Charles Hoskinson: > - Can’t seem to keep his mouth shut and sometimes overreacts when faced with criticism. First Story: Before I moved to Kenya, I use to send my wife money every month via Western Union. For some bizarre unknown reason WU thought my wife was a terrorist and blocked me. They also reported me to some organization and I ended up on some highly inclusive ban list and was blocked EVERYWHERE that I could find to send money overseas. Several dozen companies. Eventually, WU unblocked me after I sent tons of proof that my wife was actually my wife. This took around six months. During this time, her only support from me was via crypto. There was no alternative. Second story: After I moved to Kenya, I wanted to buy a house. When I tried to wire the money, my bank said I had to come in person to sign the paperwork. This was during the height of the Covid panic and international flights weren't even available in many parts of the world. I tried using ATMs, PayPal transfers, and WU. However, my bank had a policy of only $10k in transfers per month. At this rate, it would have took around a year to get the money. It was crazy, I couldn't buy a home with my own money. After many futile attempts, I finally switched to cryptocurrency. Long story, but eventually I was able to sell some of crypto savings locally using hundreds of small transactions (mainly to be safe). This took under a month. I could have done it faster, but Mpesa only allows $3000 in transfers per day and I didn't want to carry large amounts of cash. Third story: I use to love making computer games, but never had a way to monetize it. Despite my games spreading through shareware to over a million people (mainly Atari ST and early PC DOS crowd), I never got a deal with a distributor. Setting up my own distribution network was beyond both my skill level and financial ability. Because of this, I lost hope in ever making games for a living. It occurred to me at some point that if I could make my games multiplayer, I could monetize them, but even setting up a debit/credit card system was still beyond both my financial and technical capabilities. Crypto makes the problem of monetization a hundred times easier. I made a multiplayer game that requires a server, so I can distribute the game client for free. It works with cryptocurrency. No need for Visa/Mastercard. At some point, once beta is complete, I could charge a small fee. Even that may not be necessary as I can just charge a small percentage of sales with the built in auction house. Admittedly, this last story is still ongoing. It is also a bit pointless, as I am already successful. I can make games without really worrying about making a profit on them. Plus, there is the Steam platform for solo developers now. Then again, that is a centralized solution to game publishing, so they could totally change their policy (like requiring a million dollars to publish a game) and cut off solo developers.

Former enforcement director Bill Hinman received $15 million while in office from Enterprise Ethereum Alliance founding member law firm Simpson Thatcher. We have emails where he was warned by shra Minton from the SEC Ethics and legal departments that he had an illegal bar with his Clients from ST. They went on to joke about his Bribery he met with those clients over a dozen times they were for the Canaan IPO. ETH bros are downvoting this because they don't like the truth. They like to believe the fairytales and marketing that Ethereum is completely decentralized and there aren't insiders with more information than them. The truth is everyone of these chains including BTC have huge stakeholders that have control indirectly or directly Ripple is the only transparent one about it.

You accuse others of bad faith while your messages ooze of the same from early on under the pretense of looking for a constructive conversation or providing food for thought. You've not actually been that constructive and, despite your claim to the contrary, you have not shown that you're open to a different point of view. /u/ST-Fish was right to call out your rigid bias as well as incorrect (or perhaps misguided) conclusions. Your entire thesis seems rooted in the wrong conviction that future must equal past, that prologued deflation has never been a success in the history of mankind. /u/ST-Fish as well as myself inanother thread pointed out the fact that periods such as the great deflation were brutal transient effects following large sudden industrial and economic shifts. It is simply inconclusive wrt a future economy built on top of a deflationary non-centraly issued currency like bitcoin (note I also said currency, not asset or technology). There are other, both more important and more interesting challenges worth thinking about and investigating about such a future, and not all bitcoiners are oblivious, shortsighted or downright idiotic about it. Being ardent supporters and campaigners merely implies they are putting in the time and effort to build the future they would like to live in. It does not imply they are sleepwalking. My own comment history contains several "alarm sounding" messages about the dangers and challenges of a future economy based on bitcoin. I doesn't preclude beliving in it. I very much want bitcoin to succeed, while calling on others to think about future challenges and prepare & act accordingly now (which happens to be in the same spirit of Satoshi building bitcoin after imagining the challenges of the future).

Because parties who would benefit from it not being a security were placed in the SEC. This is not conspiracy theories. 1. Bill Hinman 'left' a higher paying position at Simpson Thacher to work at the SEC. 2. All the while Simpson Thacher were still paying him MORE than his SEC salary. 3. While working there, Hinman was advised by the ethics dept NOT to meet with Simpson Thacher. He ignored this and met with ST staff several times. 4. Internal communications between Hinman and others in the SEC, recently unsealed, showed that the issue was not resolved or clear cut among others in the SEC. 5. Hinman proceeded to go on TV and loudly and confidently assert that ETH wasn't a security. 6. Hinman left and went back to Simpson Thacher.

Gotcha. Was just browsing, pretty similar to KuCoin. I guess PIAS is safe for now, I don't see ST anywhere. I'm pretty sure I hold a very high percentage of PIAS on MEXC. I'm seeing order books for mere thousands. Yet, I have 4mil. Imagine, if all this worked in my favour. It's only valued at $50 now. I got a free $20 Futures Bonus on here. you are not right IMHO. most higher management of ledger company would have to be involved to push a malicious firmware (therefore very unlikely to happen). malware on PC cannot install malicious firmware or exploit non-malicious firmware, as far as we know. Ledger has a pretty good history of never having their devices getting hacked, plus the Ledger Donjon that rewards responsible disclosure of any discovered vulnerability (I know, I did find a small one, one day, and got a bounty from them). yes, hackers can try, but so far the ledger has been time-proven to be one of the safest / most secured hardware wallet, largely because of their hardware architecture and the Secure Element that they use, that allows the BOLOS OS to be completely gated in a secure enclave. You say "Nope" you don't have to trust ledger. Well, you are wrong there, because you have to trust ledger, this was well explained by several of Ledger Founders on this forum. You ALSO have to trust ST Microelectronics, the manufacturer of the SE chip. But if you don't agree with all that (obviously you don't), you should just use something else to secure your cryptos. FUD is not helpful. Rational discussion is much better.

Yes. You want some sort of Security Module that has a limited API exposed to your server module (which the RPi would be fine as) Basically, your hardware wallet is two microprocessors that talk to each other. One is the Security Module, which handles all of the cryptographic stuff and is super secure if the firmware running on it is, and the other is your server, which basically does all of the communication between the internet and the SM. If you're trying to implement the Secure Element alongside your server on the same part, there is a security risk there. I've used the ST31H320 on a few projects before, but never a hardware wallet. Something like that is where I would start if I was going to build my own hardware wallet.

r/BitcoinSee Comment

Ledger was my first hardware wallet, but far from my favourite. The pitch is that the seed is written to the 3rd party secure element (the same ST31H320 off the shelf chip that’s used in payment cards, ID cards, hardware authentication tokens, etc). If the secure element has been compromised, that’s a whole bigger story. We’re talking like being to duplicate chip and pin bank cards and credit cards if that’s the case. So if that’s what ledger says, that seems to be right in line with how I’d expect them to implement such a feature. I’m inclined to give them benefit of the doubt on this one. I still wouldn’t trust my whole stack to Ledger, but it’s still a great of the shelf wallet that works well for multi-sig.

Mentions:#ST
r/CryptoCurrencySee Comment

That's a more grave statement than you might think. It is Ledger's responsibility that they follow datasheet recommendations to the letter, only after which the secure element can give its guarantees. By design it then becomes the secure element's sole responsibility to achieve key isolation. This is the statement released on twitter: "A firmware update cannot extract the private keys of the Secure Element". So then the secure element must be flawed and any product using the ST31/ST33 is possibly broken. And that's even much more unlikely than Ledger messing up their implementation and then writing firmware that exploits their own unfixable bug to release this "feature". If it was possible to fix by changing the Secure Element they would sensibly do that in a new version. Following Occam's Razor the conclusion is that they have never achieved key isolation but just wanted to market that because they could get away with it unless they forgot that they had claimed key isolation.

Mentions:#ST
r/CryptoCurrencySee Comment

How about this, Mr hardware security engineer, how about you draw me up a schematic of a ST31H320 where the hardware won't allow you to extract keys with a firmware update. Once again, your hardware can never, ever be perfectly safe if your firmware isn't. The fact that you don't understand this proves that you have never dealt with secure embedded in your life.

I work in this field so I may be able to provide some explanation. The ANSSI has only certified (through the Common Criteria certification) the secure elements used by Ledger wallets. I believe that they are manufactured by ST micro, and are widely used, not only by Ledger. Your phone most likely also uses secure components that have been certified by either the ANSSI or other national certifying bodies (BSI, NSCIB…).

They can’t unless ST (the secure chip mfg) goes open source too. And they won’t.

You wouldn't want to use an Rpi. Probably rather get a STM32 dev board with a ST31H320 security module. Then, you have to write a bunch of embedded code paying super close attention to best security practices for embedded devices.

Banks are subject to further capital requirements beyond the reserve ratio. The liquidity coverage ratio current minimum requirement is 100%, which means banks are required to hold enough liquid assets (cash or ST treasuries) to cover cash flow over 30 days. SVB was not subject to LCR requirements which is why we’re seeing what we’re seeing. Yes, the current reserve ratio is 0%. However, there are other safeguards in place for the major players that go beyond just the reserve ratio. This post is misleading in that it implies ALL banks, including the giants of the industry (JPM, BOA), are leveraged beyond reason and have zero liquidity on their balance sheets. Which is not true. I am not defending SVB or the current financial system, but I don’t want to see people being misled. While the post is technically correct in this situation, it is not correct across the board.
