Breaking tokenization stocks into roles made everything clearer

I started with DVLT and ended up building a full 10-name tokenization watchlist

I started with DVLT and somehow ended up tracking 10 names instead of 1

I found this theme through one small cap, but the bigger names were the real surprise

Could be withholding tax treatment or incorrect non-resident classification, definitely check whether your W-8BEN is properly submitted and active with Schwab.

Mentions:#BEN

schwab withholds 30% on US-index options for non-US persons unless you've filed a W-8BEN claiming treaty benefits. if you haven't submitted one, do that first since many countries have treaties that reduce or eliminate withholding. for the refund side, you'd file Form 1040-NR. Prime Path Advisory handles exactly this kind of nonresident SPX withholding issue.

Mentions:#BEN

Most likely withholding tax or account classification issues, not “tax on profits” directly. If you’re non-US, check whether your W-8BEN is properly filed with Schwab. A lot of brokers default to higher withholding if the paperwork/account settings aren’t correct.

Mentions:#BEN

My best guess based on a quick google search: your account may be missing a W-8BEN. If EU account holders are missing this, schwab says they withhold a mandatory 24% of gross sales proceeds.

Speaking as a Brit, if you're living in the UK, use an ISA. All stock investment platforms offer one. It lets you put up to £20k every year (each April, when our tax-year begins) and ANY profits you make are 10000% tax free. No tax on profits, no tax on dividends*, no tax on interest. All of it is tax free, even when you withdraw. Still get access to invest in US, Canadian and EU listings too, instead of just being restricted to UK / LSE only listings. It's arguably one of the very few fantastic things about investing here, and very generous for what it is. *: we still get taxed in US owned stocks, but we're made to sign a W8-BEN form before we're allowed to buy US shares, and any taxes from dividends are automatically taken upon dividend payment, but iirc that applies to all non-US residents.

It is a smart move to look for ways to protect your savings in a more stable environment. Using a US LLC for investment purposes is a common strategy, though it does add a few layers of paperwork compared to a personal account. Since you already have the LLC and a Chase bank account, you have already cleared the hardest hurdles. Here is the ELI5 (Explain Like I'm Five) process for moving into the stock market. 1. The Correct Process (Step-by-Step) Step A: Choose an Entity Account When you sign up for a brokerage, you must not select a Personal or Individual account. You must select Entity, Organizational, or Corporate account. Why? The account must be in the name of your LLC, not your name. The brokerage will ask for the LLC’s Employer Identification Number (EIN). Step B: Prepare Your Golden Documents Brokerages are very strict with foreign-owned companies because of Know Your Customer (KYC) laws. You will need: Articles of Organization: The paper from the state where you formed the LLC. Operating Agreement: This is crucial. It must clearly state that you are the Authorized Signer or Manager with the power to trade stocks. EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575): The letter the IRS sent when you got your tax ID. W-8BEN-E Form: This is the tax form for foreign entities. It tells the IRS that your LLC is owned by a foreigner so they apply the correct tax rules (and avoid double taxing you if a treaty exists). Step C: Link the Bank Account Once approved, you will link your Chase Business account. Most brokers use ACH transfers (which are free and take 1–3 days) or Wires (which are instant but usually cost $20–$30). 2. Recommended Brokerages for Foreign-Owned LLCs Not all brokers like working with foreign-owned LLCs. Some (like Robinhood or Vanguard) often require the owners to be US residents. Here are the big three for your situation: Interactive Brokers (IBKR): Generally considered the best choice for international users. They have the most experience with foreign entities and offer access to global markets (London, Tokyo, etc.), not just the US. Charles Schwab: Very reputable and has a dedicated Schwab One International division. They provide excellent service but the application for an LLC is usually a paper/PDF form rather than a 5-minute online click. J.P. Morgan Self-Directed (Chase): Since you already bank with Chase, you can open an investment account directly through them. It is convenient because you can see your bank balance and stocks in the same app. 3. Common Pitfalls to Avoid The Form 5472 Trap: This is the most dangerous part. Even if your LLC makes zero profit, as a foreign-owned LLC, you must file Form 5472 and Form 1120 with the IRS every year. The penalty for forgetting this starts at $25,000. Estate Taxes: If a non-US person dies owning more than $60,000 in US assets directly (or through a disregarded LLC), the US can take up to 40% in Death Taxes. Many people use a Blocker Corporation or specific insurance to avoid this. Withholding on Dividends: The US will automatically take 30% of any dividends your stocks pay out. If your country has a tax treaty with the US, you can lower this to 15% or 0% by (NOT financial advice just my opinion of what I would do in your shoes. As always do your own research and decide what’s best for you )

Witholding tax from US to U.K. is 15% not 30% once you sing the W8BEN form which you can do through your trading platform. 15% is still more than zero but not as bad as 30%. If you’re after UK high dividends take a look at WINC.

I’m UK‑based, so yeah the tax side is something I’m trying to figure out. I know about the W‑8BEN form for US stocks, but beyond that I’m not sure how much tax drag there really is compared to just sticking with UK/global funds. Couple of things I’d like to ask you: * When you say “not all” into the US, what split do you think makes sense for someone starting out? * Do you see the recent US run as fundamentals or hype — and how do you judge that? * From a UK perspective, do you think the currency swings (GBP/USD) matter more than the tax differences? I get the idea of not going all‑in, but I’m trying to understand how much of that is about taxes vs actual market risk.

I am watching to see if gold bounces off 4000, or drills back to 3000. Either way, I am hedged due to a leap strangle. I still see gold going up to 5000 in two years or so. I have one CSP on SLV that expires today, at the same strike as one of my leap puts (I am sitting on four leap puts on SLV). I am watching to see if silver consolidates around 50 or drills to 30. Either way, I am hedged. My only concern would be if Silver suddenly moons today instead of Thursday. KO wheeling is going to help pull me up. I have another CSP I'm holding this week, and if I get assigned, no worries; the market sentiment has become bullish for them. I am going to probably do some research into Franklin Templeton (BEN) to determine if I want to pull the trigger. They have a low P/E ratio relative to other XLFs, manage quite a few overseas index funds, and are a dividend giant.

I may buy another leap put on SLV, and roll more silver CSPs. I sold my calls on Friday to lock in profits, and am watching to see if it retests the 15-day SMA instead. I am long-term bullish but see a potential for short-term correction. I set a stop-loss on my GLD leap for 5% upside worst-case, but am otherwise good to let it ride up. My IAU call is still up 39% so...not to worried there. I'm thinking to deploy some cash to CSP KO as its earning date is Tuesday. Otherwise, I'm sitting on 2.3k in realized profits, and am considering where to park cash. Franklin Templeton (BEN) is one I'm considering for dividends.

Just stick to indices until you know more. Just by VOO (own a small sleeve), or BEN or SCHD (don't own now but have in the past and will in the future). Stick to indices, consider stocks the risky 10% of your portfolio. If the stocks aren't outperforming VOO, which is likely, then you should stick with VOO. Or you could do VOO + IWM, the Russel 2000. It is very, very hard to outperform indices without accepting significantly higher volatility, even if you are right about the outperforming stocks.

Right now we are in the cloud/data-center buildout wave of AI. Current small LLMs are mostly useless. Only the apple studio M3 max ultra can run not-entirely-useless deepseek models, which could have applications if custom-trained with better hardware. So, when will the buildout stop? Everyone is looking for signs of weakening demand, reduced capex, so when it happens you will hear all about it. I think everyone will go back to CSCO. Using 1998-2000 as a guidepost, CSCO started crashing when it had roughly 15% YoY growth. That's great for most companies, not great for a company with a backward PE of 200. I think if NVDA and companies see decreasing growth and it is around 4% sequential quarter growth, it's time meaningfully reduce holdings and look for boring dividend stocks like BEN. Maybe we've got another year left, maybe more. The hyperscalers are spending enormous sums on talent and facilities and these are multi-year projects, so demand is not going to collapse overnight. But, all kinds of things can go wrong in the interim. Inflation numbers are coming out Friday and all the last prints have been bad. There is a bear steepener and treasuries are priced with the expectation that the future fed won't be an inflation hawk. The fed can lower the short end, but it's the long end that determines most loan rates. If the world has no confidence in the Fed's willingness to make tough decisions to fight inflation, then lowering the short end won't juice the economy as much as it should. But, that's not a reason to be a bear. The last time inflation was hot, it was good to be in stocks. Not investment advice, yada yada. There are no cheap stocks growth stocks in this market. The semis have had huge selloffs from 2023 to near-ATH levels now, and that will continue going forward. I've also had metals as ballast, GLD, SIVR, FCX. But in a future crisis that will come at an unknown time, nothing will be completely safe.

Yes this strategy works. You wouldn't want to pick the overvalued stocks in the S&P though. You want to pick companies that have been down as of late, that still have growth potential. I've bought lyft, BTI, BEN, Decker outdoor, lyb, etc. lately and are all drastically beating the market. Also, focusing on emerging industries (AI and robotics) will ensure a better 10 year growth. I bought soundhound, paloalto, serve robotics, etc. - and will guarantee they beat the market over the next 10.

I don't claim to a stock guru nor analyst. But here's my story. In April, I bought in to BEN as dividend aristocrat as part of my income portfolio. Within a month its share price increased in value by 25%! I was in the same quandary: should I sell or hold? My Schwab financial advisor basically asked, "What do the analysts say?" He pointed me to a site called finviz, https://finviz.com/. Pop in the ticker symbol you are interested in, scroll down to analysts table. You'll see their target price on the far right column. At the time, only one analyst had a hire target price than current share price. With that, he suggested, that if the majority of anlaysts there did not see any upward momentum in the next 12 months, perhaps, per that timeframe, grab some profit and use it for other income producing stock/funds. So I did! Subsequently, BEN dropped and only is now back near my sale price.

I’m sure there will be someone there to collect all the new taxes for section 899 & 891. Canadian companies operating in the US will start paying 42% corporate taxes and individuals 74% and double that the following year. But the max rate will be 80%. But since the Canadian Digital Service tax was implemented retroactively in 2022 all taxes to Canadian companies and individuals will pay 80%. Plus Canadian individual investors and Canadian sovereign funds, pension plans or Canadian ETFs that who invest in US stocks will be subjected to 30% withholding tax and additional 5% per year to a maximum of 4 years of twenty percent. For a total withholding tax 50%. No exemptions including W-8BEN or RRSP.

I am a Canadian and I sometimes dabble in US stocks, bonds and options. I know that if a Canadian files their W-8 BEN correctly, most dividend income has 15% withholding [with the exception of Registered Retirement Savings Plans, which are similar to traditional IRA/401(k) plans] and interest income has no withholding. "Liberation Day" tariffs triggered a "Sell America" movement in which USD, US treasuries (TLT) and US stocks (SPY) crashed all at the same time. This is not like 2008 and 2020, when stock crashes led to bond rallies. In 2022, bonds and stocks both crashed, but the dollar rallied because the Federal Reserve raised interest rates again and again. This time, everything is getting sold because people want to dump American assets. Why, then, do House Republicans want to tax foreigners? Don't foreigners already want to sell American assets even before the bill? Why are you giving them financial disincentives for holding American assets? Do House Republicans (or Trump himself) somehow have massive cash positions (or have long puts, naked short calls or short positions) and want to make stocks crash so that they can profit off of this? If that is the case, the American financial markets are no better than the Chinese ones, which are infamously manipulated to the nth degree by the government, especially when they crash.

Not always! Some international brokerages let you open accounts without being a resident, you just need to fill out tax forms like W-8BEN. Also, some US-based platforms (like Interactive Brokers) allow foreign nationals to invest globally. Worth checking their requirements. But then in the end it also depends on how disconnected you want to be from the US, because in the end any brokerage will let you buy EU index funds for instance.

Yo bro, you’re kinda half-right but missing some key stuff. Yeah, buying Treasuries directly gets you tax-free interest, but seriously—you gotta file that W-8BEN form right! ETFs? Doesn’t matter if they pay dividends or not—Uncle Sam’s still taking a cut upfront (even those 'accumulating' ones are sneaky like that). Want the easy + tax-hack move? Got 500k+? Just grab Treasuries directly through your broker—but triple-check they’ve got your W-8BEN on file. Smaller stacks? Snag Irish or Luxembourg ETFs (look up DTLE or Xtrackers)—slashes your tax to 0-15%. Baller mode? Irish funds at 1M€+—total tax blackout. Oh and heads up about that new Global Minimum Tax thingy from 2025—it might mess with some setups. Better run this by a cross-border tax pro before pulling the trigger

It's a valid investment strategy. It's not what I would do, but if you're looking for cashflow, it's not a bad idea. Also Shell in itself is not a terribly idea; the saying after all is *Never sell Shell*. But you probably would want to diversify to lower risk. >I'm in the EU, so better recommend me EU-based companies because the US has a witholding tax for foreign investors. Which country? For example in NL we can have the witholding tax reduced to 15% by filling out the W8-BEN form, reducing the dividend tax rate to 15%. This rate is the same as in NL, so there's not effective difference between getting dividend from US or EU stocks. (Minor nitpick but Shell is not an EU based company either. Shell is a UK company since 2022, which is when they also list the privilege of having *Royal Dutch* in their name)

I worked in India (Indian citizen) and my employer (US based company )offered RSUs through Charles Schwab. So, yes you could invest from outside. But you will have to make necessary changes to your brokerage account (address, tax filing status (W8BEN vs W9) etc) I have heard in public forums that other brokerages like Morgan Stanley, IBKR also support foreign nationals. To answer your question. Yes, you could invest from abroad. But not all brokerages support that functionality.

11 years ago when my mom died her life insurance money was put into an account at BEN. The financial advisor there who helped me set up the account was a creep in his late 40s who tried to have me, a vulnerable 19 yr old who just had a parent die, to go to his house—alone—so he could “show me numbers”. He specified just me, not me and my dad who also had an account there. Sure, bud. Anyway no positions, no dd, not financial advice.

Please read IRS publication 519 for alien taxation here - [https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-publication-519](https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-publication-519) Generally if you file a W8BEN to your brokerages in US, you are eligible for a reduced treaty withholding rate of 25% on dividends. Capital gains on shares is exempt for non-resident aliens (NRA) Please be aware of a very low estate tax liability in US for NRA at $60000. In India, you are exempt from tax & reporting on US income & assets till you are an RNOR as per Indian income tax act post which your US income will be taxable in India as well. For 401k/IRA there is a beneficial provision in terms of Section 89A which allows you a tax deferral of income in India till its withdrawal in US.

Hi, I am an EU citizen and I recently started working as a student in the Netherlands. I want to start investing, obviously, not a big amount of money. I have a little bit put aside and I plan to just gain experience and learn about investing throughout the next few years. I downloaded the Trading 212 app and it suggests that I sign a W-8BEN form which as per my understanding is a form that reduces taxes from 30% to 15% when it comes to the American market. That got me wondering though, how does that system work? Are the taxes paid automatically when a share is sold, or do I have to file anything at the end of the year? I hope somebody more experienced can explain this system, and how it works. Thanks a lot.

It's probably even easier than that. Most countries have local ETFs that track the same US indexes, like S&P500 etc. EU definitely has those. This way you don't have to bother with W8-BEN and international money transfers. They deal with taxes for you (most countries, unlike the US, withhold taxes on investment at source, and using a US-based brokerage will trigger a filing requirement that most people don't have). You can even invest in individual shares, local brokerages work with US-based brokerages (usually IB) transparently on the backend, and make the fact that you're trading on NYSE completely transparent. In my home country, my brokerage would charge $0.02 per unit when a transaction involved US stock (yes, per unit commission is weird, I know).

Sorry the easy way wasn’t available to you. Based on the other link I sent you since you said you are a US citizen you should be able to cash them at a US Bank or Credit Union next time you visit. Not all of them still cash them, but plenty of them still do. If you don’t plan on returning to the US any time soon all you would need is to get a notary to sign a request for payment for you bonds with you. Idk how it is in the UK, but here in the US many libraries offer free notary services. If you are a US citizen include a statement over your signature that you are a U.S. citizen and give your Social Security number. If you are not a U.S. citizen fill out and include IRS Form W-8BEN. Send the signed bonds and IRS form if applicable to: Treasury Retail Securities Services P.O. Box 9150 Minneapolis, MN 55480-9150 Here is the link again outlining everything I told you. This post is funny. Awesome for the OP but so misleading. This family has likely been wealthy for generations. He appears to be a direct descendent of Ben Franklin, with family members who were major leaders in the civil war. I would expect most of those Americans are now very wealthy. This guys post mention his relative was a senior leader for the union in the civil war. The Wikipedia for his great great (etc) grandfather, Campbell, says his great (etc) grandfather was BEN FRANKLIN! Super cool, but not your average American. So one possible explanation is that his mother tossed $3k on a whim in the stock, and bc it was so small relative to her estates net worth, she literally didn’t notice $2mm+ sitting around, or bother checking about a company she presumably bought after careful diligence. https://www.reddit.com/r/CIVILWAR/s/tHezbulB8N https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campbell_Dallas_Emory#:~:text=Campbell%20Dallas%20Emory%20(December%2023,to%20Major%20General%20George%20Meade.&text=Philadelphia%2C%20Pennsylvania%2C%20U.S.

It depends on your bank/broker in the UK offering to be able to handle the US WHT rate at the reduced 15%. Your US securities are likely held at a custodian bank in a nominee account (not owned directly by you in your name). Your UK bank/broker might not offer to handle a W-8BEN form for you and a potential manual refund would then have to be done by yourself, which can be very time consuming and costly. Make contact with your bank/broker and ask them directly.

This might be very relevant for Europeans not in the UK then. For the UK it should also be 15% when the W-8BEN form has been filed. But I guess there is also stamp duty which Ireland may not have? The US withholds 30% of the dividends by default. If your country has a tax treaty with the US, they will withhold at a reduced rate. To [claim the tax treaty rate](https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/claiming-tax-treaty-benefits) you need to fill a form (W-8BEN) and submit it to your broker.

Considering that the account is only a 16 days old and that post is one of 4 other posts, this is definitely a bot. Regardless, it didn't even answer your question, just generic explanation of things that you already know. Like, you already know what a W8-BEN is, and reduced withholding doesn't mean much, actual tax liability is what matters. Money market dividend is not qualified so it's taxed as ordinary income, then apply your own country's tax treaty to it.

As a foreign investor with accounts in US brokerages and a valid W-8BEN form on file, you may be eligible for reduced or exempt withholding tax rates on US-sourced investment income, such as capital gains and dividends from Money Market Funds (MMFs). The specific tax treatment can depend on the tax treaty between your country and the United States. Here are some key points to consider: Tax Treaty Benefits: Check the tax treaty between your country and the US to determine the withholding tax rates applicable to capital gains and dividends. Tax treaties often provide reduced withholding rates or exemptions. W-8BEN Form: Ensure that your W-8BEN form is up-to-date and properly filed with your US brokerage. This form helps establish your foreign status and eligibility for treaty benefits. Brokerage's Reporting: US brokerages are required to report income to the IRS, but if you are eligible for treaty benefits, they should withhold taxes at the reduced rate or exempt you from withholding. Claiming Tax Benefits: You may need to submit additional documentation to claim treaty benefits. This can vary depending on the specific treaty and brokerage. Your brokerage's customer support or tax department can provide guidance. Consult a Tax Professional: Tax laws and treaties can be complex, and their interpretation may change. It's advisable to consult with a tax professional who specializes in international tax matters to ensure compliance with both US and your home country's tax laws. Keep in mind that while your country may have a tax treaty with the US, the specific terms and benefits can vary from one treaty to another. Therefore, it's crucial to understand the provisions of your specific treaty and work with your brokerage and tax advisor to ensure proper tax treatment of your MMF investments in the US.

Can anyone recommend a good Canadian etf that tracks Qqq to invest in? Been trying hard to get answers to questions with no luck. [  ] Canadian ETF that tracks QQQ/nasdaq 100. [  ] Non resistered account. [  ] For math sake let's say about 500,000 to invest. [  ] Ive heard of hedged (example QQC.F) vs non Hedged (example QQC). With hedged is the currency flucation factored into the stock price (as you pay higher MER for this feature)? The price per share that I see when buying and selling is the price I pay and currency fluctuations have zero affect on stock price? With non hedged, the price per share that I see when buying and selling is the price I pay and currency fluctuations influences the price per share as gains or losses on the etf plus dollar gains or losses is how we come to share price? Is this correct? [  ] Do I still have to pay 15% divident tax to America government if buy etf that replicates qqq (as qqq is American companies from what I gather). Do I need to complete W-8BEN form? [  ] Concerned what usd to cad exchange rate will be in 10 years when convert back to Canadian dollars. This is biggest issue or would invest directly in qqq. So alternative is Canadian etf that replicates QQQ. Can I have Recommendations on Canadian etf that replicates qqq with similar returns longterm? I'm also conserned about volume/Liquidity and AUM as I want it be easy to buy and sell 500k worth of stocks IF need twice a month (unlikely as I plan to hold longterm, but just incase). ZQQ and XQQ seem to be best based on my research (been around a while, similar returns to qqq, decent volume, higher AUM). Please provide any suggestions. [  ] Side question about volume and Liquidity. Here's how I understand volume and Liquidity but I'm probably wrong. Let's say I spend 500k (buy 20k shares of QQC). QQC: $25 per share. "Asset under management 129.45million". Aug 9 2023 it lost 1.02% and the volume was 12k for the day and red (so more shares were sold than bought)? About 8k was sold and 4k bought. If it dropped 1% on 8k sold volume, then if I sell 500,000 (20,000 shares) that would cause the share price to drop by a large amount (pretend no buyers and only my 20k share sale). So about a 2.5% drop? Is this roughly how it works?

W8-BEN is the tax form you’re required to update every 3 years to maintain your tax reporting/benefits. It’s the form actually on file with the broker. The 1042S is the annual summary of your dividends and any withholdings. For US based individuals they receive what is known as a W9. This is used to report income for US citizens and not required for anyone living outside the US. Neither of these forms should really require much from you. A W8-BEN was likely completed automatically during your signup process through your Broker’s website/App but you can always reach out to support to confirm.

OP is an NRA. Interest from banks, credit unions, savings & loans, and insurance companies are not taxed for NRAs. There is no 1099-INT. An NRA would provide a bank with a W-8BEN so that the bank doesn't report it as taxable. See the IRS link that I shared above. The reason that it's not taxed is because it encourages foreign nationals to bring capital into the US and invest in US businesses. Instead, the foreign national is taxed in the country of their residency.
