If you compare [income](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/daily-median-income?tab=line&time=1990..latest&country=OWID_WRL~USA~KOR~CHN~TWN), you’ll see real wages have grown consistently in Korea over the past two decades. Yet Taiwan has a higher gdp per capita (nominal and ppp). Tawain’s productivity has not translated into rising wages. Taiwan’s broader economy is dominated by low margin SMEs so wages are suppressed broadly. For the few key companies that are insanely profitable (TSMC), they retain those earnings in the business and reinvest into capital (machinery). It’s the perfect company to own stock, since profits help grow the business. Sucks to work for. Korea’s chaebols have actually been the main engine for income growth, on the other hand. Historically has been a very bad stock to own though.

Do y'all expect a Liberation Day 2.0 tonight? It's almost exactly one year ago, where everybody expected a TACO and 🥭 went full regard, escalating the tension between US and CHN for multiple days before really TACO'ing. Now the market is pricing in another TACO, but we may seem some escalation over easter with ground troops and a final sharp selloff before this downward trend ends. Thoughts?

Nice Multi Asset Portfolio you have there, I like it! I also like the SPY and chill approach, although I did prefere global diversification with a slight EM vs. DM overweight, such as 70% World + 30% EM. EM performed really well the last year, benefiting from strong growth after multiple weak years (esp. CHN) and a weak dollar. However, I do see things slightly changing from here if the war in the far east keeps going. If it keeps going, it will slow overall growth and hurt Non-US equities even more, especially Europe. Gold was benefitted from a weakening dollar combined with global uncertainty, but right now we are seeing a flight to safety in the US dollar, hence a strengthening of it again, which hurts real assets and equities. If your timespan is still 5-10+ years, I wouldn't change much, maybe even allocate a little more towards equities if this goes down even more. If you want a short term tatical play and reduce overall portfolio risk (!!!), you could get some exposure towards energy (without selling your other positions), since stocks such as XOM, CVE, COP are currently negatively correlated to the overall market and positively correlated to oil. Even if oil doesn't go up and stays in the current range, it would keep hurting equities and be beneficial for energy stocks, since all models currently are pricing in lower oil prices in H2 '26 and 2027. No financial advice of course.

why are you people focusing on [only a part of what china is doing](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/energy-consumption-by-source-and-country?stackMode=absolute&country=~CHN)? if china is the way we should follow we should also be scaling up gas and coal and nuclear massively more than intermittent renewables there is currently no storage mechanism to provide more than minutes of power at grid scale. there is also no energy independence when we go batteries and solar because those two are mostly produced by china. and in any energy system that is based on consumable small components, massive amounts need to be replaced every year. the only thing storage is good for is for people who own a storage facility to try and speculate by load shifting, which again is expensive just due how expensive batteries are while storing minuscule amounts of energy by grid standards if you look at the underlying report for what you linked, it’s worth noting that there subsidy is defined also a not taxing something, which is not common usage but sure is common in eu circles. another thing you can quickly spot is that renewable have generally been subsidised a third more for many years even by this definition https://op.europa.eu/o/opportal-service/download-handler?identifier=32d284d1-747f-11ee-99ba-01aa75ed71a1&format=pdf&language=en&productionSystem=cellar&part= so sure! let’s be completely fair and equalise these so called subsidies between RES and fossil fuels. i don’t know about you but i wont have to guess which industry will completely collapse if that is done

This looks to be reported more recently by more than one western source. The following is from an AI search ~~~ The comment claiming this is a "nothing burger" is largely inaccurate based on the search results provided. First, while there is some truth that provisional anti-dumping measures were implemented in January 2025, the current news (May 18, 2025) represents the final determination and implementation of the duties following the conclusion of China's investigation[2][4]. The January action involved preliminary deposits starting January 24, whereas this announcement confirms the permanent duties[3][8]. Second, this is not insignificant news but rather represents substantial trade action: - The 74.9% duty on U.S. imports is particularly high compared to other countries' rates[2][4][7] - An economist from the Plastics Industry Association specifically noted that "The 74.9% provisional duty significantly hampers US competitiveness in the Chinese polyacetal market"[10] - These duties affect POM copolymers, which are important engineering plastics used in automotive parts, electronics, and medical devices[2][4][5] - This action is occurring despite a recently negotiated 90-day tariff truce between the U.S. and China[4][5][7] Finally, regarding the claim that this is "Chinese propaganda," the information is being reported consistently by multiple international news sources including Reuters[2], CNBC[9], Politico[7], Malay Mail[4], and others - not just Chinese media. The core facts about the duties, rates, affected countries, and context are consistent across these international sources. The trade action appears to be a verifiable development in the ongoing trade tensions between China and the US, with real economic implications, not propaganda or insignificant news. So I'll take a page from Bessents most recent talk as he's the closest thing to an adult in the room (you'll have to kind of look past the parts where he has to talk the administration's book). The big elephant in the room is that trade with China isn't really 'free' trade in that China has pretty strict capital capital controls so they can keep the Renminbi from appreciating. This permits them to "de value" their currency and support an export led economy since they don't have enough local demand to sustain all the industries being built, which in turn causes deficits (a lot of it the US) where new currency (dollars) are printed in order to buy those exports. This has in turn resulted in a hollowing out of many previously industrialized economies as you simply cannot compete with the cheaper labor. This is not a big deal in a world if you think Wars are a thing of the past, but the Covid pandemic made it very clear how integrated supply chains were and how fragile the foundation of the US's power was (where the value of the dollar is also implicitly backed by US military power). This is a big big problem in the world where you just print money to satisfy global demand, since eventually the world wakes up and realizes they don't need to take your printed money if you have no means to enforce it. This is really a clash of two super powers and everyone else is caught up in it. Now the execution? Total dogshit. People here are completely missing the fact OP lives in an underdeveloped country and may not have unrestricted access to invest in international markets or without incredibly high fees that would make it cost prohibitive. Underdeveloped country currencies tend to devalue over time compared to their Euro/USD/CHN counterparts making it unfeasable to stick to what most people here would consider "safe" such as bonds or high-yield savings. I think while OP's strategy IS risky, it IS a plan as long as they stick with it and are comfortable with the potential downside of that high risk plan. BTC has (in its short history) been used by people in underdeveloped countries as a way to protect their savings from their own local currencies devaluation.

The reason I think you don't know is you keep bringing up GDP deflator data in a discussion about whether China is in a recession, when I keep bringing up Real GDP data. If you knew a recession was defined as 2 quarters of Real GDP decline, why would you bring up an irrelevant figure to how recessions are measured by economists? The reasonable conclusion was that you thought GDP deflator was relevant to the discussion, which would be because you don't know how recessions are defined. Also, instead of twitter, I think you should maybe look to more reliable sources for IMF data. Ya know like the IMF. [https://www.imf.org/en/Countries/CHN](https://www.imf.org/en/Countries/CHN)

Chinese nominal GDP is 19.53 trillion USD and their purchasing power GDP is 39.44 trillion. (source IMF [https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/profile/CHN](https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/profile/CHN) ) Their imports are 2.568 trillion USD. Last year they imported 145 billion worth of goods (in USD) from the USA. Which represents 0.74% of their nominal GDP (yes % i did not forget to multiply by 100), and 0.36% of their purchasing power GDP, and represents 5.64% of all their imports. On the other hand the US economy is 30.337 trillion USD (nominal and PPP) and their total imports were 4.11 trillion and they imported 440 billion from China. Their imports from China represents 1.45% of their nominal and PPP GDP and represents 10.7% of their overall imports. All of which are higher when compared to the China stats above. So by what measure is it gonna hurt China more than the USA cuz the numbers seem to show that the US relies on China more than the other way around??

Voting smoking dope: Most consumer products by number arrive to west coast ports because of where they are made (ROK/JAP/CHN). East coast ports handle a lot of automobiles. S. Carolina has *exports* for BMW, Mercedes and Volvo, among others. These auto exports consist of high margin luxury SUVs, but S. Carolina is not the only place these are made. As this is heading into fall, most product for Christmas should already be offloading on shore.

It's interesting. China still imports a ton of USA agricultural products. That was the supposed intent of the "trade deal" trump "won", however, China was unable or unwilling to purchase the prescribed quantities of agricultural goods. They also targeted retaliatory tariffs on goods in districts that heavily support Trump. Quite a few farmers seemed happier to get a government subsidy vs produce a product I found this [https://wits.worldbank.org/CountryProfile/en/Country/CHN/Year/LTST/TradeFlow/Import/Partner/by-country/Product/Food](https://wits.worldbank.org/CountryProfile/en/Country/CHN/Year/LTST/TradeFlow/Import/Partner/by-country/Product/Food) Looks like China almost double their imported value of USA food from 2020 ->2021 (2020 and 2019 are pretty consistent for Chinese imports of USA food). Im curious if the trend continues in 2022/23/24. One of my Chinese friends asked me to help her find a "pork processor" in the USA as they wanted to buy containers of pork products. It was amazing how challenging it was to find/get in contact. Furthermore, China has a short list of approved pork producers in the USA, and apparently, the list for USA approved is shrinking while places (like you mentioned) like Brazil have seen a drastic uptick.

I love how your entire premise is "you can't trust the Chinese government". And then you go on a long diatribe about all these numbers from American financial institutions and financial media, which is the backbone of your entire argument, and not once did you even consider the trustworthiness of any of those institutions. This is doubly regarded on WSB, a community dedicated to the idea that the entire American economy is rigged, full of misinformation and distrustful of the idea that slow steady investment like "you're supposed to do" is unlikely to be successful for precisely the aforementioned reasons. Meanwhile, when was the last time you bought something that wasn't made in China? The last time an American company tried to manufacture electronics lasted all of about 6 months and, while I saw them sold in Best Buy, I never met a single person that owned one. Oh, and that was like 20 years ago. Also meanwhile, China has got the most market share in most industries. In nearly every industry that matters, China is number 1, often by insurmountable margins. Even in pharmaceuticals, they are number 2 in dollar value, but number 1 in terms of volume, because they don't charge cancer patients $27k a month for medicine. If they did, they'd be first on both counts. Why you are going after China as being in trouble when the US is facing far deeper problems is exactly what the media is trying to make you do. 9% of individuals can afford to buy a home. Our medical system is crippling the country. Our student loans are crippling the country. The US is losing hard power throughout the world as it fails in conflict after conflict. The US is in no position to deal with the end of oil and gas. The government can't even fund itself, because it is so dysfunctional that it must pass temporary resolution after temporary resolution just to keep the lights on. 15% of the US GDP is interest payments - not from the govt to bondholders, but from the financialization of everything. GM earns nearly all of its profits from lending. 8% of GDP is just the margin from how much more expensive our healthcare is compared to the next most expensive country. Our infrastructure is pathetically bad and in terrible repair. College enrollment has been in decline for nearly a decade and a half, ensuring we won't have the workforce to unfuck all of this. And I'm being polite, we can entire system is facing enormous interrelated problems as the US empire enters terminal decline.

I’ve heard it all before man. I’m at a point where to me you’re a confused freshman who knows it all and I’ve been teaching this class for way too long. I’m not going to argue with you after this because I know it’s never ending and you will keep trying to change the subject and pull rabbits out of your ass. I’ll have to charge you if you want a free class on Macroeconomics and Finance of East Asia. Ghost cities aren’t abandoned like in the US, they are preemptive. “these homes typically serve as future homes for the buyer's offspring to live in when they get married.” Us gdp growth 1992-2006 https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/USA/united-states/gdp-growth-rate China gdp growth https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/CHN/china/gdp-growth-rate Even at 6% that’s tripling or quadrupling US growth many of those years. GDP growth can be decoupled from carbon emissions. [https://ourworldindata.org/co2-gdp-decoupling](https://ourworldindata.org/co2-gdp-decoupling). Here's China. [https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/energy-use-gdp-decoupling?country=\~CHN](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/energy-use-gdp-decoupling?country=~CHN) Australia and Sweden are even better. Why do you think oil is MANDATORY for economic growth? Poor countries have the opportunity to leap frog technology. Like how everyone in rural africa went from no phone access straight to cell phones, skipping installing miles and miles of land lines. **We have many sources of energy now. Why are you married to this one?** Seriously? You can't recognize the pros and cons of other sources? Or the damn cons of oil and gas? We've tapped the easy oil wells dry. It's becoming more expensive to produce a barrel of oil. [http://graphics.wsj.com/oil-barrel-breakdown/](http://graphics.wsj.com/oil-barrel-breakdown/) It's why our production has shifted to fracking shale. Renewables are cheaper in many circumstances [https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/levelized-cost-of-energy](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/levelized-cost-of-energy) or [https://www.statista.com/statistics/194327/estimated-levelized-capital-cost-of-energy-generation-in-the-us/](https://www.statista.com/statistics/194327/estimated-levelized-capital-cost-of-energy-generation-in-the-us/) But really. Why are we having this conversation? I asked a question about investments, and now you are getting into it about Germany's energy mix?

1. I gave the net increase of both nations. Nothing about “sounding cooler” that’s on you for not comprehending. 300% > 42%, considering China’s population is massively larger than that of the US, those Chinese figures are very important. 2. Talk about “checking your sources” your Statista source is incorrect. It’s totaling every level of education. Higher levels of education (bachelors degree) is 10%, with 8% at master levels. Meanwhile, the US has over 58% with at least a bachelors. personally I don't think yesterday can be considered a pump. Check reddit search api and you can see there was literally a single post about MVST. Like spamming a hundred posts sure maybe that's a pump attempt, but it was a single post that gained traction before it was taken down. In terms of the factory not doing anything, that's not true. The current two factories (one in China, one in Germany) are both real. Last year they did about \~$100 mil in revenue selling to CHN and others. This year they announced they are selling to gaussian and a few smaller names (and are suspected of working with Daimler and Oshkosh). The only thing I can think of to substantiate 'smoke and mirrors' is that since the german factory just went up and is not at full capacity, it is not macking cells, just packaging them (china factory does both), but Microvast has been open about this and that plant will soon make them in addition to packaging them (not I mean package battery cells on manufacturing lines, not like just put them in boxes like dropshipping). In terms of bear cases the top is likely tought competition, but imo since there will definitely be a battery shortage in a few years, this won't matter as much (and MVST has strong R&D). Another bear case is likely the two biggest partnerships (Dailmer and Oshkosk) that would represent billions in revenue over the next few years have only been strongly hinted at, but not officially confirmed yet.

Because the US and EU have been pollution for over a century now while China hasnt. They have a lot of catching up to do. China claimed it was unfair to lock the golden egg laying goose (industrialization) away the moment they where getting to it. While the west has reaped the benefits from it for a century. Wrong. You're completely ahistorical. China's deaths per 1,000 people was at 20.6 at 1963, it rapidly decreased to around 6 by 1980. To add context to this the US was at 9.4 in 1963 and had only decreased to 8.8 by 1980. China had less deaths than the US starting in 1973, nearly thirty years before you proposed they had "10's of millions of deaths". You're absolutely delusional. https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/CHN/china/death-rate
