“No one politician anywhere in the world can undo the direction the world is now moving in.” Fresh from his historic high-stakes dealmaking at COP28, @POTUS @JoeBiden’s top climate emissary @JohnKerry says not even a Trump comeback could rewind progress now.

If you saw the COP news about tripling renewables by 2030 it's great. For every one you know of add two more of them by 2030. Then do it again. If you're not aware Australia started this process at a national level about 15 years ago. Oz is the largest energy exporter in the world if you didn't know. Aiming for renewables 82% of our grid by 2032. South Oz is net 100% already and exports to the grid aka the largest reserves of uranium and gas in the world. The reason for my rant? That decentralised energy infrastructure is cheaper for the largest energy exporter in the world, than extracting from their reserves. Renewables happen everywhere. No one will be able to stop the last thing that could have killed bitcoin; cutting off its energy. The long and short of this is that energy decentralization, which is driven by the ever reducing price of renewables energy, will acquire more and more economies of scale, and continue to reduce in price. Already in the Oz grid, because of renewables, soaking up power is one of the big challenges of integrating it into grids. And it's an implementation problem, but not really that much of a 'what are we going to do?' problem. If you want cheap energy now, you're going to pay someone to build it for you and it's going to be cheap, because that's what renewables are these days. You'll agree to a five year contract at $x/kwh, and they'll build the facility for you. The problem is, in five years time, your miners are going to be a fraction as efficient. So you'll want a cheaper energy source. And you know who's going to be cheaper? A newer renewables facility; Because of economies of sale. The old place that you were getting the cheapest energy that could be bought will then sell that energy to the person that wants to buy it. But it won't be a miner, because it will already be too expensive. We are going to be building a lot of renewables energy generation. Our coal energy systems are already circling the drain. Oil has encountered the disruption of EV's. The economies of scale of oil production are already going backwards. Within five years, EV's will be 50% of new sales in most western nations if not higher, and you'll need about a third of the petrol stations. You'll end up buying it like you buy kerosene at Home Depot. Gas still has growth (thanks Oz) but it too is going to become a specialized energy product, and not for consumers. Bitcoin will just continue buying the cheapest energy there is, and it will get more and more decentralized. While driving the cost of energy to zero wherever it is used. Which is everywhere.

Jeez. Why do you need a link? That's what a discussion thread is for. Bitcoin is decentralized. It requires energy, and [we're going to be building a lot of it.](https://old.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/194jc68/we_are_the_boomers_of_the_future/khh98b5/) - me > If you saw the COP news about [tripling renewables](https://www.iea.org/news/massive-expansion-of-renewable-power-opens-door-to-achieving-global-tripling-goal-set-at-cop28?ref=biztoc.com) by 2030 it's great. There was a small short squeeze, it was constantly being shorted and that went well for two years, then it started hitting the prices VCs last bought in at for a few months, being bought by people who'll lock it up for years for staking, enabled chain-key Ethereum, then they gave a talk about a recycling initiative at the United Nations COP28 and there was just nobody selling while it was being bought. ~50% of the circulating supply is locked for years. 25% of it's locked for 8 years for voting rewards.

Adoption is becoming increasingly important. Personally, I would prefer that my bank isn't feeding my account and transaction data back to any government department without a warrant (I live in the UK) but there's zilch I can do about that. I am lawful and aren't up to anything. I would also prefer my bank couldn't arbitrarily impose restrictions on transaction I make with my own money (e.g. to a crypto exchange). But they will do, above a certain amount. Most of all, I would appreciate it if my government weren't hellbent on replacing (already mostly digital) GBP with CBDC. I don't want my money connected with carbon credits/social credits. My little trips by car or bike aren't the problem. I think the war in Ukraine pollutes more, and so do my government's 3 private jet flights to COP28, Sunak's use of RAF helicopters to take a 40-mile journey, etc. I see where this is going (slavery and containment zones aka open-air prisons), and I hope developers (who are already kind of heroes) hurry up and get on the case, make decent Lightning wallets, address the problems or whatever ASAP.

tldr; Consulting firm Roland Berger has selected Dfinity Foundation as its blockchain partner for the development of the 'Voluntary Recycling Credits' standard. The standard aims to incentivize companies to invest in recycling by making recycling credits and transactions transparent and auditable. The blockchain technology will ensure the integrity of the entire system. The partnership will develop the underlying technology for the standard, with the first live recycling credits transaction set to take place at COP28 in Dubai. The goal is to establish the standard as the globally recognized benchmark in recycling incentives. *This summary is auto generated by a bot and not meant to replace reading the original article. The proceedings of WEF are quite ironic in itself. Their meetings and conferences involve delegates flying globally, emitting enormous amounts of greenhouse gas emissions to attend a climate change conference which is simply contradictory to COP’s mission. And anyway, we have a number of emerging blockchain platforms leveraging their technologies to promote sustainability in the crypto space like Cardano (ADA), Algorand (ALGO), Elysium (PYR) and Polkadot (DOT).

>Web3 companies had the strongest ever showing at both the COP and WEF events, showcasing solid use cases with broad global support. Climate and Web3 were among the hottest topics, with the ReFi sector on the rise. 2023 and beyond promise continued growth for this trend, with the potential to become the blockchain space’s leading focus. The industry awaits guidance from carbon standards and regulations to drive the market, but there are also untapped opportunities in topics beyond climate, such as biodiversity. It's lovely seeing more and more players care about global climate situation, especially forever-rising Polygon. On that note, go plant some trees!

Well I've probably got quite a different take to a lot of the other responses here, and I'm not going to focus about Monero (XMR) as despite it's value for people requiring privacy in their transactions (e.g. citizens of countries like Iran, China, Russia, North Korea etc) I don't think it represents the real potential of crypto. That lies in it's power as a coordination tool. Unlike Monero, most blockchains are transparent, meaning a true record of an account's transactions can be verified, not just by a goverment body or a bank employee, but by anyone. A huge amount of the problems facing humanity come down to us failing at 'coordination games' (commonly used examples if you're not familiar with the term and want to do some reading are 'The Prisoner's Dilemma' and 'The Tragedy of the Commons'). All of these boil down to each participant having the opportunity to cooperate or to defect. Both sides cooperating mean both sides do okay. Both sides defecting mean that both sides lose. But if one side defects and the other side cooperates then the defector wins big and the cooperator loses big. What makes it worse is that as both sides know this, then to avoid the worst case scenario of being the victim of defect/cooperate each participant is heavily incentivized to defect, even if they don't really want to. A real world example of this playing out at the moment, with potentially civilization ending consequences, is international action on climate change. Everyone knows that making the transition to renewable energy and a low emmission economy is going to be very costly. Everyone also knows that if we don't reduce our GHG output our descendants are going to be catastrophically fucked. So why is it that at every COP meeting no politicians are willing to commit to anything like the decarbonization plans that scientists are screaming that we need? The answer is defection seems a better option to each individual country. If everyone else decarbonizes (cooperates) while we just keep polluting, then the crisis will probably be averted without us having to pay for it. We 'win' because our economy would come out much stronger than all the other suckers who gave up their profitable sources of cheap energy and dirty but cheap industries. Sadly though, you know that every other country may be thinking the same way. It could be an absolute disaster for China if they cooperate but the USA defects, if they sacrifice their economy while the US gets to keep theirs then all their decades of progress on the stage of world powers would be reversed. And vis versa. Luckily though, there are ways for the prisoners to be in much less of a dilemma. If you knew that the other side would act a certain way then you would not always need to chose to defect, if both sides can see that the other will cooperate then you can get the win-win scenario. This relies on internal communication and guaranteed outcomes, which crypto can provide through smart contracts. As a simple, abstract example, user A signs a transaction to cooperate, user B can see this and then signs their own intention, user A then gets to change their position IF and only if user B chose to defect. This model would incentivize cooperation in each interaction. Another addition to the prisoners dilemma would be external communication, leading to reputation. If each participant's choice was visible to everyone they interact with in the future then they would realize that defecting would lead to people assuming the worst of them in the future, which effectively removes the possibility of them winning with either cooperate/cooperate or defect cooperate. As accounts histories are stored on an open ledger, blockchain's enable this reputation to be checked easily. This isn't just useful for punishing defectors, coordinators can be retroactively rewarded as well. A good example of this is Optimism's airdrop which issued about $600 worth of their token to anyone who had donated any amount to any public goods project on the Gitcoin funding platform. This reward incentivizes more people to do more good in the future, a concept referred to as ether's phoenix (Ethereum's inverse analog to Roko's basilisk). There are more aspects to this, but this comment is already a mini-essay! If you want more on this topic and how it relates to crypto I recommended any of the Bankless content on Slaying Moloch (such as [this article](https://newsletter.banklesshq.com/p/ethereum-slayer-of-moloch-) or [this podcast](https://shows.banklesshq.com/p/slaying-moloch-ameen-soleimani-and)) or the GreenPill podcast (most episodes are good but I'd recommend the first couple, with [episode 2](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/2-ethers-phoenix-with-optimisms-karl-floersch/id1609313639?i=1000552104369) on the above mentioned concept of ether's phoenix being my all time favourite), or if visual learning is more your thing then concept is also layed out in Gitcoin lore's [first comic](http://decentralized.quadraticlands.com/mission/ql-lore/). So anyway, the TL:DR answer to your question about what makes crypto an answer to society's problems... it allows the building of trustless coordination tools that give humanity a chance to slay Moloch and avoid The Great Filter!

The Fed is audited annually by an independent external audit firm, and the results of these audits are reported to Congress. The Fed's financial statements are also reviewed by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), which is an independent agency that audits federal programs and activities. In addition to these audits, the Fed is also subject to oversight by other federal agencies, such as the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and the Congressional Oversight Panel (COP). The OIG is responsible for conducting investigations and audits of the Fed's programs and activities, and the COP is an independent panel that is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Depends on type of heat pump. Lowest cost air2air heat pump have a COP of 3 at best. But in that climate efficiency goes down near 1 since outside air in Canadian winters is not a good heat source. If a deep ground water well is used as heat source would be more efficient. But either way it is not cheap and requires regular mainenance by a heat pump technician. Bitcoin mining seems to be the most economical solution, since the reward pays at least for all cost.

"If we were to consider the journey from Rome to Glasgow on a private jet - a journey that some of the G20 leaders made to get to COP 26 - that would take around two hours and 45 minutes, requiring 2,356 litres of jet fuel. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) says 2.52kg of carbon dioxide is emitted for every litre of aviation turbine fuel burned. Therefore this flight would produce 5.9 tonnes of CO2." [Yield.app](https://Yield.app) I've been trying to get my head around DeFi and I found it too time consuming, expensive (fees to move the funds between farms) and risky because there are so many shady projects and rug pulls! With Yield App we get very good yields (IMO) from 6%-18% depending on your tier and the coins/tokens involved. I know we can't compare it with the 50%-500% found easily on DeFi but the risk, time and hassle is just too big! PLUS it's a very user friendly platform with no deposit fees and reasonable withdrawal fees. There is an upgrade being tested now where the yield tokens can be staked, the yields can be paid on the local token (and boosted in 2%) that will be implemented soon. I think that the ratio of the perks the YLD token gives facing it's price is just too great to be ignored on a platform that is at very least the gateway to DeFi or even the platform that can bring DeFi to everyone!

I'm not a fan of Bitcoin/crypto funds as it kind of takes the purpose of crypto as you institutionalize it, but its a good vehicle for many people to invest in it if they don't want to go down the rabbit hole. This said, with more ESG marketing involved or not (it's a big thing in funds ans stocks this days) caring about the environment is a great and important mission that everyone should take part on! I don't buy into projects because they are just doing something to stop the climate change or because they are carbon neutral, but I end up sticking to them longer because somehow they tend to preform better long term, have more committed teams, etc Unique Network is one great example, as they took active part on COP26 this year, they support artist environmentally conscious, their NFTs are minted carbon free, etc. On a project side, it had been a great journey to be following them for a couple of month now and see how much they deliver even without any sort of token out!

The COP was designed to monitor the state of markets, current regulatory systems, and how the Treasury Department was managing TARP. They were a watchdog. Not implementors or a regulatory agency. Their ultimate goal was to analyze policy and make policy recommendations. Blaming Elizabeth Warren for bailed out banks choosing to disburse some bonuses fundamentally misunderstands the authority an oversight panel actually has. On the issue of bonuses being disbursed, the relevant watchdog here, Kenneth Feinberg, made clear a few points. One, the bonuses were distributed primarily before Congressional approval for TARP funds. Second, he was — like Warren — a watchdog without any enforcement authority. Third, banks by and large DID adhere to the terms laid out by TARP. Hence why it was largely a success. What they wanted reformed got reformed. Bonuses, obscene and wildly offensive, were not the culprit of the financial crisis and not what TARP was focused on addressing. Finally, I think you’re dramatically mistaken on your impression of Warren if you think Wall Street is a fan of hers. She is perhaps one of the most vocal critics of Wall Street that’s in the US government today. She is literally the creator of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Wall Street largely hates her.

>the enviromental impact of crypto currencies is the elephant in the room: G20, COP26, the US-CHINA joint declaration of Glasgow and a lot of upcoming policies could hit an sector that is so demanding in energy, in semiconductors and that is not seen as enviromental friendly at all Compared to traditional fiat? Do we even know the carbon footprint of traditional fiat? The best I can find are comparisons to visa, which doesn't include minting and banks' carbon footprint.

Here’s one you’ll not have heard yet. Save Planet Earth (SPE) are massively undervalued at a 33M MC, still an underdog for now but only 6 months old. Carbon sequestration > Carbon credit NFT > Carbon offsetting. 1 billion trees contracted with Pakistan govt. 100M trees contracted with Sri Lankan govt. 1 M trees contracted with Maldives govt. Every single tree above (many more coming) will be calculated in terms of carbon ‘sequestered’ and sold as a carbon credit NFT. Carbon credit worldwide average cost is $35 US but expected to be way more, this coming decade. Whip out a calculator, the maths? beautiful. First of their kind carbon credit NFT’s minting next week. The first thousand are limited edition. Offsetting looking to shape into a multiple trillion $ industry this decade coming. CEO met with the President of the UN General Assy at COP26 and again (on invite) in New York to discuss SPE development. Partnership with WWF (Pakistan). What is an acceptable amount of energy to both run and secure a global monetary system????? Who decides what is acceptable? ...the winners of the present fiat system that have nothing to gain and everything to lose in a monetary revolution....the same people that flew on a multitude of private jets to COP26 to decide how much energy the proles will be allowed to use.....no thanks I'll take BTC and it's egalitarian decentralised access to 21million tokens.

Not trying to shill but take a look into COP. It’s a platform that’s releasing an exchange that audits and lists small cap and the larger cap coins. Also releasing a wallet and NFT marketplace all in next couple of months. Sitting around 10mil marketcap right now.

> Also some ambitious engineers might be working on a Stirling engine powered by the heat, who knows :) That's my point though, you can't do that, because of thermodynamics. The heat grade is very low so under the [Carnot limit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnot_cycle) you can't really use this heat economically (except for heating itself) -- energy that could be used for all sorts of things has turned into waste heat. Note that you can even use electrical energy to power heat pumps which provide (under a typical COP of 5) about 5x as much heat as electrical energy input. > Who determines what is worth consuming energy and what not? I called it wasted because it cannot be economically recovered, and could have been put to much better uses, like actual production of food, industry and such. Because it's been shown crypto does not need PoW and all this waste to operate.

In just this last week, Chia has announced three separate climate related partnership/real-world use cases with more announcements in the pipeline. The other two: \- [Partnership with World Bank to prototype the Climate Warehouse for carbon credit tracking](https://www.coindesk.com/business/2021/11/05/chia-network-to-develop-prototype-for-world-banks-climate-warehouse/) \- [VO2/VEN to onboard to Chia Network with the CAT standard (Chia's version of ERC-20).](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8JpXfNa_zk) Chia Network is also an official sponsor of COP26.

Power Ledger is a project I'm really positive about. They want to combine green energy and blockchain technology and already have some big partnerships. They were also present at the COP26 I believe. Seeing the crypto space go green would be amazing.

$SPE I think whenever people read about it they think it's a charity or scam coin, but it's not. Only a week ago they announced a collaboration with the Pakistan government to plant 1 billion trees as a part of a government initiative. The founder was just at COP26 talking with the President of the United Nations General Assembly, pretty they mentioned he'll be meeting with the UN General Assembly this week in NY. Here is an article that goes into more detail what they're up to. https://financialpost.com/globe-newswire/saveplanetearths-certified-carbon-credit-smart-nfts-poised-to-make-impact-on-climate-change/wcm/833f6291-c4c3-41cd-b00a-c745e12c2739/amp/ All shilling aside. To me it seems to have a real use case and it's for a good cause. The founder appears to have some real government connections too.

Nice, cool to see them leave coal and go solar And also, get that first customer (sounds like Compass mining - mining bitcoin) - someone that can eat all the solar energy they make. Soon, maybe, we can find some products somewhere eventually that lets us bottle that spare energy, or maybe eventually use HVDC and get it to paying residential and commercial customers half a continent away that could pay more than bitcoin miners. But like I've been saying, until you have that steady first customer, you can't hardly break ground on extending energy use out to more lucrative things. It's like the energy equivalent of "Minimum Viable Product" - a Silicon Valley idea that maybe the way to get things started is one extremely simple use case and scale from there, add features from there. Maybe a first viable customer - a bitcoin mining farm - could help make a green revolution happen. Way way way way faster than COP26 "blah blah blah" would make people believe.

Here is how Zimbabwe works: the President of the poverty stricken nation leads a ‘bloated’ delegation of 100 people to COP26. It’s not wrong. It’s as valid an estimate as 0.5% though derived from different methods. Crucially, the number is rather low. Lower than energy used by consumer electronics on standby in the USA alone, lower than gold mining, lower than any number of other more flippant uses of energy you and I use on a daily basis without feeling the need to justify in any way shape or form, no matter how frivolous. “it's not bad because these things use more" is not an argument”. Actually, it is, in a sense. There is a finite amount of time, discussion and research that can be done by humanity in the course of a day. It is a completely irresponsible misallocation of these finite efforts to be spending time we have at this moment talking about emissions emanating from an industry that by your own admission uses less than a percent of global energy, when the same efforts can be put towards bigger industries to much greater overall impact. “ what practical use does it currently give us” You have absolutely no authority to unilaterally decide what constitutes a good use or a ‘waste’ of energy. Nobody does. Which is why we outsource that decision to the aggregate decisions of the market; supply, demand, energy cost vs potential reward for paying such costs on a free market. The global free market has decided that a sound, stateless, decentralised, provably scarce digital cryptographic asset is of extreme value. There are profound fundamental reasons for this, which stretch right the way back to mankind’s first attempts at using money. Lastly, regarding energy use, proof of work is not an ‘evil’, but nor is is a ‘good’. Is will simply act as an amplifier of public and political sentiment regarding energy production. It is a mirror unto ourselves; If countries do not care for environmental impact or emissions, they will produce dirty fuel of coal and gas. PoW mining can act to subsidise such sectors. Conversely, if politicians are pressed to commit to reducing emissions, PoW can be used to support natural peaks in energy demand which coincide with troughs in demand as is common with renewables. So PoW can actually provide an energy sink to subsidise renewable technology, whilst being economically productive at the same time. Given the vast majority of the world leads have descended to the UK for COP26 under intense public scrutiny, i feel PoW is more likely to facilitate that latter situation to a greater degree than the former.

Save Planet Earth - (SPE) Carbon sequestration > carbon credit > carbon offsetting. Just signed a contract with Pakistan govt to plant 1 billion trees. Already have 100 million contracted with Sri Lanka govt and 1 million in the Maldives. Minting (first of its kind) certified carbon credits this week. Imran (SPE CEO) is right now at COP26 - meeting with President of UN general assembly (old friends) and has been invited to next meeting in New York to discuss collaboration. Team of environmental scientists. Newly migrated to V2 contract with total supply of 1 billion (much more attractive to investors and exchanges). Tons and tons of other reasons to be bullish - more info saveplanetearth.io

You've got it upside-down. The rate of mining is Bitcoin functionality, a 10-minute delay to enable the node network to remain synchronized. This 10-minute delay is the main purpose of Bitcoin mining. The mining reward is incidental Everything else about Bitcoin mining is a folly of diminishing returns. Whatever the size of the mining network, the amount mined is 900 BTC per day (until the next halving). If there are 1 million miners, they each earn 0.0009 BTC per day. If there are 2 million miners, they each earn 0.00045 Each mining device burns 3.4kW, about 80 kW-hours per day. Is 0.00045 BTC enough to pay for 80 kW-hours? Maybe it is, maybe not, depending on whether (0.00045 * current fiat exchange price) is greater than (80 * electricity price). Let's say BTC price is USD62500 and electricity price is USD0.18. Is (0.00045 * 62500) > (80 * 0.18)? Sure is, there's a 100% gross profit Now the world has a complaint. The Bitcoin miners are running through 6GW of electricity 24 hours per day. Maybe this isn't a big deal, because they're spread all over the world. But let's pretend. There's even a presentation at COP26, "Bitcoin mining, Satan or Santa". A speaker at the presentation explains the folly of diminishing returns, and presents the simple formula explaining Bitcoin mining profitability as being a function of the fiat price of Bitcoin (not the reward, because that's a fixed daily amount), and the price of electricity. Some of the authoritarian nations want to knock all the speculators on the head and drive the Bitcoin price down to $100. Is (0.00045 * 100) > (80 * 0.18)? Obviously not. So this measure, if effective, would drive down the number of miners by 99.8%, drive up the BTC reward per miner to 0.28BTC, and the electricity consumption would fall from 6.8GW to 11MW This isn't hypothetical. With slightly different numbers, it describes Litecoin. Litecoin has the same mining economy as Bitcoin, but a fiat exchange price around USD190. Litecoin miners burn a number of megawatts, where Bitcoin miners burn gigawatts. Also, until Bitcoin's bubble price exceeded USD1000 in 2017, Bitcoin only burned megawatts Our conference presentation is dominated by realists. No government intervention can repair the mass delusion causing the Bitcoin price bubble. The only sensible person in the group points out that the bubble will inevitably burst, so the obvious solution is to do nothing and wait for the inevitable. He is ignored It's a meeting full of bureaucrats and politicians. Their raison d'être is to be seen to be doing something, simply because a loud enough voice is complaining about it. They're here to raise energy prices so that their clifftop mansions don't topple into the ocean. They assign the arithmetic to their minions. Find an electricity price which makes Bitcoin burn only 60MW if its price is USD62500. Round it up to the nearest dollar. Call it the Bitcoin Mining Carbon Certificate. Without running this through a calculator, it probably comes to somewhere between USD18 and USD36 The countries of the world, meeting at COP26, have just decided that Bitcoin miners should pay $18, not 18 cents, so that Bitcoin mining electricity use falls by 99%
