Itโs so crazy to me FATE was trading only $0.25 above book value at $1.70 a month ago. I didnโt buy and now itโs $7 a share ๐ฅฒ
I wrote a text that went with this but I a regard and the text isn't showing up! Total degenerate and opened a T-IRA with intent to beat the S&P. Started with 1k and yolo'd into $FNGU. Made some nice trades in LETF but mainly was flat by year end. Big gamble in 2024. Mainly Biotechs! Big wins on $ALDX $ARQT $FATE and $HOWL. Had made wins and losses trying to scalp $LABU. While I swore off biotech by the end of 2021, November CPI of 2023 was a big signal of it's recovery! $XBI and $LABU are giving trading blows and matching with AI and Silicon!
Letโs see, Iโm iffy on FATE. Objectively their income statement is awful. 0 profit since and little revenue inception. They raise money by grants and stock offerings. Holding a position in FATE is asking to get diluted. All that said, their stock has had insane run ups, their balance sheet is rock solid, they hold a ton of IP, and they have had some nice licensing agreements in the past. Bull case for FATE maybe up to 8.50 and beyond. Bear case back down to 5. Iโm leaning more towards bull but weโll see how March goes. LABU Iโm bullish. It smashed through its previous resistance and biotech is having a crazy run right now. But again, itโs a bull market until itโs not. Full disclosure Iโve liquidated and am in cash but I wouldnโt mind holding a few shares of either.
Most of these companies license out their research. They have no hope unless they have a breakthrough or they get bought out and neither of things happen very often. Best way to trade it is either through a fund like LABU or bet on a single companies tech. I liked FATE bc theyโre trying to mass produce niche therapies. Theyโre a good lab and have good products but donโt do business very well. Plus they somehow always have funding. Itโs a big company with an (in my opinion) undervalued share price. But, as you probably know, biotech stocks can go bust or moon with no warning.

LABU calls price target @ 185. FATE calls price target at 7.75. Both trades assume high risk tolerance
Biotech is a mess right now and a lot of good therapies get approved then see low uptake unless a profound breakthrough. Some of the better ideas though have insane valuations. Iโm excited ahout the various cell engineering companies as the sector is still hated but off the shelf engineered cells may be one of the best solutions and also have applications outside cancer. FATE is probably my top pick because itโs so in the toilet on price but actually has very good science/

Talking something about ETF. As replied in the comments, ETFs are like a bunch of stocks or a portfolio. Some are tracing large indexes. For instance, "SPY" is tracing the S&P index, which is 500 large companies traded in the US. For the US you also have ETFs tracing NDX(tech companies mostly, with heavy weight on some top companies), DJIA and so on. There are also other types of ETFs. Here's a list of examples: \- ETFs tracking indexes in other countries' stock market indexes. \- ETFS tracking different sectors of the economy. For instance, you have SOXX for semiconductors. \- ETFS tracking other financial instruments, like TLT for 20-year bonds, GLD for US Dollar based Gold The recommendations: \- You can reduce the risk to some degree. Buying companies(like FATE in the past) might make you bankrupt, but as you buy QQQ(where FATE was a component), you won't be suffering from that losses. But - in any chance - you're in favour of Microsoft, and you might receive less yield from QQQ. \- ETFs tracking cross-sectors reduce the amount of work you need if you really want to study a certain industry. If you want to buy a specific company, you'd better know the macro bits, the industry, and how this company might perform. If you buy sector, it requires less understanding on specific companies. If you buy cross-sector indexes, it might be even easier, like you only have to know about interest rates and other major economic indicators. \- For advanced trading(perhaps after a year or two), you might encounter certain leveraged-etfs, like TQQQ(QQQ, but 3 times fluctuations) or others. They're also high-level trading tools that might be beneficial. \- ETFs are far better way if you are using a dollar-cost averaging method, especially if you're buying something on a downward trend(I don't recommend this really). But if you do, you might know a company will go bankrupt, but it's harder for a sector or a large market.

We both started investing in 2016. I got in AMD and FATE then. Sold AMD way too early. Got in at 2.25 and sold at 11. I may have even sold you my shares.
FATE Therapeutics. Bought at 1.78 in 2016 and sold at 100 in 2021. The same day it went to 120ish.
Is Robinhood fucking me (rhetorical) or do I just not understand bid/ask with options? Robinhood will tell me my FATE 8/18 7.5c is worth 1.00 but I can buy it for 1.50. Now, if I attempt to sell it at 1.00 it instantly changes the options chain to show me that 7.5c are only worth 0.75. Oh and the 10c expiring the same month? Instantly worth double what it was before i changed my ask. No matter what I change my ask to it will tell me it is worth more or less depending. There is fuckery afoot.
ARK started to unload huge amounts of FATE last week. Millions of shares. I cashed out at a huge loss. A couple of days later news breaks that FATE terminated a deal and is laying off a ton of people. Cathie sold millions of shares before the news. Sheโs buying Tesla now. Before the news.

Big bullish signal suddenly on $FATE
The company has $550mm in current assets, mostly cash, and $200mm in PP&E and investments for $750mm in total assets. Its market cap is $1.1b so the implied intangible asset value is $350mm. FATE has plunked down $400mm in R&D expense for the last 3Y, which is higher than the value of its technology. What that means is the market is valuing FATE's technology to be less than its cumulative spending in R&D. In other words, negative returns from its R&D spending. The only reason it's worth $1.1b in market cap is because of the hard assets, $550mm cash and $200mm PP&E.
Maybe FATE is a dogshit company that isnโt worth investing in?
