Generally these are good points but they are omitting very important details that are quite important in reality. Only if you continuously delta hedge will you have zero expected P&L if RV = IV. Otherwise, you can make money buying options, even if IV is different from RV, because vol alone doesn't tell you direction. If you can predict direction is another story. Either way, any probabilistic statements derived from options are only valid in the risk-neutral world and have very little to do with actual real world probabilities. On top of that, RV isn't even observable and there are many different estimators for it, all providing different numbers. Practically, not even the daycount used for IV and RV align because markets don't operate 24/7, while IV is almost always ACT/ACT with some very few exceptions like Brazilian markets. Also, no retail trading platform will provide reliable IV data because they omit lots of details in their calculators (oftentimes simple approximations instead of solving the PDR or other more accurate solutions, not using proper swap curves and simple dividend projections etc ).

Buying options , or Spread trading are basically defined risk, so I have to think you are talking to some idiots on the other end. The best advice you got so far is to say you want the trade desk. Now you usually get a typical advisor that is clueless about options. They do not want to tell you they are clueless , but they are. So be very clear you want the trade desk. I usually have to tell them 2 times , no I do not want them to help me , I want the trade desk. When you get the trade desk , tell them you want spread trading (no point going for less) if they cannot explain why they are not giving it to you , then tell them you will move the account to Tastytrade. Basically if you want to trade , ACT LIKE A TRADER. Why Tasty, because on a margin account you check a box and can Sell Options, and you will never have these discussions , about level 0 verus level 2 or 2.5 . The Tasty founders are they same founders of Tos, they just sold the company 15 years ago and started Tasty. Also if you ever want to sell options it sounds like you will have to move to Tasty, but that is for another day.

The courts, from my knowledge, are not holding up tariffs because that was stayed. They are even only challenging tariffs under the given act. The admin would then just use a different ACT just like the Biden Admin did with loan forgiveness. Constitutionally, Congress has the power to levee tariffs, but there are several acts where Congress has extended that to the president. I have not seen Congress as a whole pushing back on tariffs, at least as in from the scope of the presidents power to use them. Escalation with China is probably the only thing that will impact markets. You don't need global tariffs to have escalation with China. The global tariffs from "liberation day" were the big ask. It was way more than what we want. Part of it was to scare everyone to the negotiating table. The other is psychological to make what we really want to be small and reasonable by comparison. If we started out saying we want a global 10% tariff, people would freak out. After having 50% on everything on many countries, 10% global seems reasonable. Add some higher strategic tariffs like most countries do and that also seems reasonable. I think the biggest volatility is over unless stuff heats up with China. The rest of the world can't replace the American consumer though. As more and more countries make deals with the US, it makes is hard and harder for the remaining countries not to.

If you really wanted manufacturing to come here you should reduce those taxes AND threaten the companies that don't want to start bringing construction in that there WILL be tariffs...
