The trade on US markets part is tricky. Many are over the counter. So it depends on the US broker. Power Corp - PWCDF - has been really good. Canadian Symbol is POW.TO. They have lots of good venture capital investments along with a strong core business. Consistent dividend growth. I have my eye on D-Box Technologies - DBOXF. It's kind of a penny stock but has real earnings and growth. Canadian Symbol is [DBO.TO](http://DBO.TO) The Canadian investing forums love to talk about Scandium Canada - SCD.V. US OTC symbol is SCDCF. I've been holding good old Royal Bank (RY) for 20 years. It's had a massive run. The valuation might be getting frothy for a financial.

There MAY be a period of recovery, but eventually I think you will get hit, and hit hard, with these stocks, and it will be a long time till you regain parity to where you are NOW. Dump the shit. Here is my advice, and trust me, an incredible amount of effort has gone into picking them BABA, MPNGY, JD.com, Tencent (Chinese stocks) PayPal, Draftkings, VEEV, SPSY, DBO Put your money in these stocks and see where you are at Christmas. The piece worth pricing more carefully is USO's roll drag versus the put surface. Crude futures sat in contango for most of the last decade and USO bleeds 3 to 6 percent per year just rolling forward into more expensive front months. Long dated USO puts already incorporate that expected decay term. The IV being quoted on a 2 year contract is calibrated against USO's historical realized vol, which already absorbed the roll drag. The market is not handing you free contango decay. Inevitable-Tea5772's observation in this thread (USO down 17 percent, $140 put barely moved) is the smoking gun on why this trade is harder than it looks. Long dated put delta on USO is dampened because moneyness is benchmarked against vol anchored forward expectations, not spot price. Vega dominates the mark in the first 6 to 9 months of contract life. Volatility crush on a slow grind down can leave the put red even when you are directionally right. If clean spot oil decline expression is what you want, USL or DBO have meaningfully different roll mechanics. For the hedge case, a put backspread on USO (long 2 OTM, short 1 ATM) keeps the convexity without paying the linear vega bleed.

This raises a serious concern about financial mismanagement and potential exploitation. Here’s a breakdown of the key issues and some advice on possible next steps: Key Issues: 1. Inappropriate Financial Product Sold: - Annuities (especially with long surrender periods) are often ill-suited for individuals who need liquidity. - It seems the bank sold her large annuities ($2 million) knowing that she would not be able to access these funds without penalties. 2. Conflict of Interest and Bank Misconduct: - The bank was aware of her financial situation, expenses, and health condition, yet still recommended tying up 90% of her assets. - This behavior may violate fiduciary standards or California’s elder abuse laws, especially if the products were not in her best interest. 3. Limited Access to Funds: - With most of her wealth locked into annuities, the trustee is struggling to manage monthly expenses, which are substantial ($50k/month). 4. Elder Financial Abuse Concerns: - California has strict laws on financial exploitation, especially regarding vulnerable adults or those with cognitive impairments, like FTD (Frontotemporal Dementia). Advice on Next Steps: 1. Legal Action: - Consult a lawyer specializing in elder law or financial abuse. Given the health condition and circumstances, this may fall under elder financial abuse, even if she isn’t technically over 65. - A lawyer could investigate if fiduciary duties were violated or if the sale of these financial products constitutes unsuitable investment practices. 2. File a Complaint with Regulatory Authorities: - California Department of Business Oversight (DBO) or Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB): You can report the bank’s actions. - FINRA: If the bank has brokerage ties, you can file a complaint regarding unsuitable investment advice. - California Attorney General’s Office: They take elder financial abuse seriously and may investigate the case further. 3. Request a Surrender Penalty Waiver: - While unlikely, try negotiating with the bank to waive or reduce the penalties, especially by emphasizing the health condition and financial hardship caused. 4. Look into Short-Term Liquidity Solutions: - If the annuities cannot be broken without penalties, explore other assets like a short-term loan backed by the home equity or other investments (like the $5M stock) to cover the $50k/month expenses temporarily. 5. Review of Trustee Role and Future Planning: - It’s crucial to ensure that you, as the trustee, have the right strategies to manage her remaining assets. - Start planning for how the stock sale or home equity could provide future liquidity in 2 years when it becomes accessible. This situation is complex, but addressing it promptly with legal help and leveraging consumer protections should improve the outlook. I am not a lawyer, this response was generated with the help of AI.

Scalping is a vaguely defined term, although I understand perfectly: Quick moves for profit. It is not a policy for me to scalp. With options, it’s mostly luck. Something works out where I accidentally time something just right, and the profit made quickly cannot be ignored. I’ll close and take profit, and then consider based on the new information whether there’s more positive travel in the option and if/where the reentry is. Where I actually intend to scalp is with shares, although this is also the research platform for scouting options scalp potential. Watching the underlying IS watching the options, but scalping options has the added burden of understanding the nuances of the options as well as the stock. And accepting a profit of 1-3% is key. These are not intentional big scores. This is accumulating little pockets of profit and gathering information for future use. There are elements of day-trading here, that isn’t what I’m suggesting. Current taps for stock scalping are: TSLA, SKYW, HPE, RUN, maybe others. Some still on the list but currently not producing are: GO, MMM, DOCS, DBO, BTU. There’s thousands of stocks out there. My philosophy is that if I watch something long enough, I’ll figure out how to profit from it.

Most of the suggestions are some of the largest market cap companies in the space. Talk about playing it safe. There is little to no room for growth as most of these companies. They are just buying out other miners to replace their reserves. As the years go by, less and less (insert metal/mineral/oil) is coming out of the ground. How do the companies replace what they've mined/extracted and sold off? Eventually they don't as we are dealing with finite resources. The best investments IMO will be in the commodities themselves. Oil will outperform Exxon mobile. Gold will outperform Barrick. Platinum will outperform Silbanye Stillwater. If you really want to invest in equities in the mining space, stick with market caps in the millions of dollars. Maybe a couple billion at the most. I'm talking the gold mining space as I know that one the best. A lot of the commodities it's difficult for the average Joe to invest in. Precious metals is the easiest. There are some ways to invest in oil like ticker DBO, but precious metals are a proxy investment to oil. As oil becomes more expensive over time as supply dwindles, the cost to mine precious metals will become more and more expensive since diesel is a huge cost input for miners. Coupled with what I already mentioned that miners will have less precious metals to extract over time and you can start to see why investing in mining companies is bad news. And I haven't even mentioned all the share dilution a lot of these companies do. Most miners are all about enriching the management and executives at the expense of the investor.

Oil production is peaking. Oil demand is also on declining. That's why you're seeing consolidation in the space with companies like Exxon and Chevron making big merger acquisitions. They can't find major oil discoveries so in order to grow they have to buy out other companies. I think long term the commodity itself will outperform the equities, not just in oil, but all the commodities. For oil, ticker DBO tracks the oil price.

Mentions:#DBO
•r/stocksSee Comment

I'm bearish all the gold and oil equities and bullish on the commodities gold and oil themselves. Not to mention any other metal or mineral the require energy to be pulled from the earth. Declining and depleting reserves is the one of the mean reasons I'm bearish all the equities. Over time they'll pull less resources out of the ground until eventually there won't be anything to mine or extract. Gold, silver, platinum, palladium all the precious metals are easiest to get exposure to as you just buy the physical metal and have it sent to you for safekeeping. For oil a ticker like DBO will give you exposure to the oil price, but it's a dollar denominated derivative with a lot of counter party risk. There's really no safe way to get exposure to oil though unless you have a bunch of land and tankers and I'm not even sure it's legal to store a bunch of oil I know nothing about it. But for the average Joe, that's not feasible.

For the wheat one I used WEAT. I also have some commodity futures index ones. Since building a portfolio of futures gets tricky, the way their built can vary how they perform, so, they won’t match the spot price of the commodity if they’re built on futures. There are some commodity trusts that do actually own a building filled with the actual commodity and generally match the spot price, some gold funds for example, but that particular wheat one I used was all futures. I had originally planned on holding that position longer so I may not have used the particular one, but it still did well. Just to use the WEAT example, it’s a portfolio of wheat futures that are a mix of different contract terms designed to minimize negative roll from markets in contango. Some will be all front month contracts, some roll maximized, and there are more active managed futures ones as well. Different strategies for different needs in that realm. I’ve also used CANE, DBO and DBA when it comes to futures ETFs.

Options MM likely can adjust spreads after hours, but it would be a pointless exercise for the standard option because there’s nobody trading. Cash settled options sometimes don’t have an ah as we usually know it. They’re different. Every now and then there’ll be an option, like DBO shorts, where the Bid will get bumped up way high just after Close, and it won’t come back to realistic until Open the next morning. It’s a defense against things that could happen in ah and pre that might have people with quick minds and fingers closing options with an unfair advantage. Although not part of my experience, I suppose lowering the Ask would have the same defensive effect with longs. So yes, spread adjustment happens ah. But I don’t think it happens in the broad market. There’s no point, the algorithms can handle the changes without trouble, and Open is often an unpredictable zoo.

You are probably just seeing a mark-to-market price based on the (usually) midpoint of the bid/ask spread. Very much doubt that it actually traded like that unless someone screwed the pooch. Market makers widen the market sometimes at the end of day and in pre-market, especially in low volume options. DBO for example has no bid and a $5 ask across the board, at least as of the end of day.

You are tracking well but there are notable exceptions. MMs will occasionally bump the Last to something ridiculously high so that shenanigans that happen to the underlying in their rare after hours and premarket appearances cannot be capitalized upon immediately at Open. I have two option symbols currently, both monthlies, where the Last gets bumped every night just after Close, making my BTC anywhere from 1.5 - 4x what it actually should be. This is not reflected in the chain, but surely reflects in my Positions and adjusts my account balance downward. The options are derivatives of DBO, an Invesco oil fund, and SKYW, SkyWest Airlines. The situation corrects at or very near Open.

I just bought in at $5k a few days ago, growth stocks, numerous stocks on Schwab's ETF/"A" equity list (MSFT, DBO, IXC, BCI) and stocks that were and are still considered undervalued (VDE, STE, SFAM) and I'm already down $70. Can someone please reassure me of what I already knew/know--that the DOW took a hit today, that this definitely could happen and could happen again when I'm buying in a bear market before it recovers--or advise me to bail out and buy back in when the market is obviously starting to actively rebound? I'm planning for the long-term (growth stocks are what I'm most adamant on maintaining: QCOM, MELI, SQ, other Motley recs...) but I'm admittedly scared by short-term losses. I know advisors say you have to be prepared to eat +20% losses in the short term in order to see your assets have high returns long term, and I guess I'm just seeking reassurance that all prices are highly volatile and more commonly decreasing right now and that I should just weather this. Even if we're heading into a potential recession, would it be worth it to sell and buy back in another time? What would you do?

The catch is that USO follows the WTI front month and isn't a pure tracking fund or a "pick the sexiest contract date" like DBO. You had a state of contango and negative rolls, so motherfuckers lost scalps back in '20. That isn't an endorsement of DBO over USO (or OIL for that matter). It was simply a matter of people not understanding how this specific ETF worked.

You can use investment capital losses to offset gains. For example, if you sold a stock for a $10,000 profit this year and sold another at a $4,000 loss, you’ll be taxed on capital gains of $6,000. The difference between your capital gains and your capital losses is called your “net capital gain.” If your losses exceed your gains, you can deduct the difference on your tax return, up to $3,000 per year ($1,500 for those married filing separately). Capital gains taxes are progressive, similar to income taxes. Watch out for two things 1. Rule exceptions. The capital gains tax rates in the tables above apply to most assets, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. Long-term capital gains on so-called “collectible assets” are generally taxed at 28%; these are things like coins, precious metals, antiques and fine art. Short-term gains on such assets are taxed at the ordinary income tax rate. 2. The net investment income tax. Some investors may owe an additional 3.8% that applies to whichever is smaller: your net investment income or the amount by which your modified adjusted gross income exceeds the amounts listed below. Here are the income thresholds that might make investors subject to this additional tax: Single or head of household: $200,000 Married, filing jointly: $250,000 Married, filing separately: $125,000 How to minimize capital gains taxes Hold on Whenever possible, hold an asset for a year or longer so you can qualify for the long-term capital gains tax rate, since it's significantly lower than the short-term capital gains rate for most assets. Our capital gains tax calculator shows how much that could save. Exclude home sales To qualify, you must have owned your home and used it as your main residence for at least two years in the five-year period before you sell it. You also must not have excluded another home from capital gains in the two-year period before the home sale. If you meet those rules, you can exclude up to $250,000 in gains from a home sale if you’re single and up to $500,000 if you’re married filing jointly. (Learn more here about how capital gains on home sales work.) Rebalance with dividends Rather than reinvest dividends in the investment that paid them, rebalance by putting that money into your underperforming investments. Typically, you'd rebalance by selling securities that are doing well and putting that money into those that are underperforming. But using dividends to invest in underperforming assets will allow you avoid selling strong performers — and thus avoid capital gains that would come from that sale. (Learn more about how taxes on dividends work.) Use tax-advantaged accounts These include 401(k) plans, individual retirement accounts and 529 college savings accounts, in which the investments grow tax-free or tax-deferred. That means you don’t have to pay capital gains tax if you sell investments within these accounts. Roth IRAs and 529s in particular have big tax advantages. Qualified distributions from those are tax-free; in other words, you don’t pay any taxes on investment earnings. With traditional IRAs and 401(k)s, you’ll pay taxes when you take distributions from the accounts in retirement. (Learn more here about taxes on your retirement accounts.) Carry losses over If your net capital loss exceeds the limit you can deduct for the year, the IRS allows you to carry the excess into the next year, deducting it on that year’s return. Consider a robo-advisor Robo-advisors manage your investments for you automatically, and they often employ smart tax strategies, including tax-loss harvesting, which involves selling losing investments to offset the gains from winners. Just a thought - maybe DBO.WT would be a nicer bet if you believe in a near term upside that will go over C$.16? I believe those warrants have a strike price of C$.16. Currently trading at C$.035.

To me the thought has always been oil is priced as dollars per barrel. If the dollar weakens then things like USO (which I don't like) and USL, DBO, BNO (which I do) should go up.

Shell is not Oil, Shell is a company and therefore price is related to the stock, not to real oil price. If you want to invest in Oil try finding an ETF that tracks crude oil futures. DBO is an option.

Big believer in the BNO (roughly mirrors Brent prices) $22 calls for Jan 2022, although minimal movement so far on that. Can be had for about 1.75 per option. Also have XOP, KSA, USL. Multimodal bullish oil exposure. I also have Oct DBO (mirrors WTI) 15$ calls. Those will pay out big if summer spike but may not spike fast enough. Remains to be seen

I've been investing constantly for about 3 years now, I been buying an equal amount of T, XOM, VZ shares and I started dabbling in DBO ETFs, I roughly put in about $2000 into my personal portfolio and I have my Roth I put in about 600 a month. My question is if my share purchases are a smart plan for long-term or is there something I could be doing better?

This confirms some of my speculation. I bought and sold GUSH, made about 30%. That was a lucky guess. Right now I’m buying BNO every time it dips. Gonna get in to USL and DBO. Commodities are hard and I don’t want to end up with 100 barrels of oil in my driveway so I stick to the ETFs that mirror the price. What are you into? This is not an offer of or solicitation for financial advice.

200% of the daily performance means both the gains and the losses. So yes the risk is doubled. They achieve that with derivatives (swaps mostly). Also DBO and GUSH are based on indices of different things. DBO owns crude oil futures while GUSH owns oil and gas companies (and swaps on them). Leveraging a volatile index and rebalancing daily causes volatility drag which is why GUSH is down so much more than oil stocks are over the long term (it used to be 300% which was even worse). Buying oil through futures results in contango which is why DBO has done worse than spot oil prices.

OIL ETF QUESTION: I'm a new investor who believes the price of oil will increase this year. In researching ETFs, I have learned about some of the differences between them. However, I don't understand why a ETF like GUSH outperforms an ETF like DBO on a day like today. I read "GUSH seeks to deliver 200% of the daily performance of the S&P Oil & Gas Exploration & Production Select Industry Index". How is this possible over DBO? Does one offer less risk than the other? Thanks you.
