It had to be a restaurant and have to have so many seats so they couldn't have a liquor license they only sold wine, but you could bring your own liquor in but it couldn't be on the table. You had to put it in a brown paper bag and leave it under the table. It was regarded.*

Laying off 50% at a salary of, say, $50k would save them around $60M/year -- that would barely make a dent in the \~ $2B debt they owe (3%). It worked out pretty well. We also live in a state with great public colleges, so the baseline for college costs was the most expensive state college (Chapel Hill NC). Our #1 decided that college wasn't "their thing" and bailed 1/2 through their 4th semester. That in-turn left more for #2. #2 is graduating this Spring. The resulting boost to our finances meant 90% of college was paid for out of the 529 for #2. One thing we did was use a single 529, instead of one for each kiddo. That gives parents a little more flexibility when using the funds. We weren't aware of the Roth aspect until earlier this year, so that didn't apply to our situation as the 529 has been fully liquidated. Last thing, in case anyone is unaware. 529s are extremely flexible when covering college related costs. Laptops? sure. Off campus housing? you know it. on and on...

They aren't, here's the full text of the message I just received offering me to buy. Fuck that, fuck reddit, fuck spez. I hope this IPO is the most abysmal in history. ---- Hello, *TL;DR: – you’re invited to a special program that lets redditors purchase stock at the same price as institutional investors when we IPO. Details about eligibility and next steps follow. This (long, dense) message has all the info we can provide due to legal restrictions.* As you may have heard, Reddit has taken steps toward becoming a publicly traded company with the initial public filing of our registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on February 22, 2024. Yes, it’s happening. And because *you* have helped make Reddit what it is today, you now have the opportunity to become Reddit owners at the same price as institutional investors. **We’re offering a Directed Share Program (“DSP”) that invites eligible users and moderators who have contributed to Reddit to participate in our initial public offering (“IPO”). (Including you!)** ######**Program Requirements** While being selected to pre-register is the first step, there are certain legal and regulatory requirements to participate in the DSP that are outside of Reddit’s control. Bear with us here… To be eligible for the DSP, you must: * Be a current U.S. resident; * You will be asked to provide the DSP Administrator a valid social security or permanent resident number, along with other personal information. **Reddit will not have access to this data.** * Please note that U.S. residents using a VPN may face application limitations if the VPN locates them in certain non-U.S. jurisdictions. * Be at least 18 years old; * Provide your full legal name and an email address; * Not be a current or former Reddit employee (FTE). When the DSP launches (a few weeks after pre-registration ends), individuals who have been confirmed for the program will be contacted by our external DSP Administrator. You will then be asked to provide additional information securely to the DSP Administrator to confirm your eligibility. ######**How to pre-register** The number of people who can participate in the DSP is limited; we will offer this opportunity to as many redditors as we are able to accommodate. If capacity is reached before the deadline, you will be added to the waitlist. Based on demand, we may also limit the number of shares available. **If you are interested in being part of Reddit’s DSP, please go to https://reddit.com/dsp on desktop to complete the pre-registration form.** If you are one of the confirmed participants, we will follow up with an email with more details in the coming weeks. You can also refer to the [Frequently Asked Questions](https://redditforcommunity.com/Directed-Share-Program) for more information. Due to regulatory restrictions *(yeah… we know…)*, we are not able to respond to further inquiries or questions. Pre-registering does **not** guarantee that you will be invited or able to participate in the DSP; it also does not obligate you to purchase shares. As with any investment opportunity, you should make an individual decision based on your own personal circumstances and risk tolerance. Therefore, we urge you to review the preliminary prospectus, when available, before deciding whether to invest in Reddit. **The deadline for pre-registering for the DSP is March 5, 2024. If capacity is reached before the deadline, you will be added to the waitlist.** ######**What happens next?** While there won’t be a confirmation email immediately after you pre-register, everyone who pre-registers will receive an email in the coming weeks from “noreply@redditmail.com” telling them whether they can proceed with the next steps for the DSP. This is an automated message (beep, boop, beep) and does not receive replies. Please refer to the [FAQ](https://redditforcommunity.com/Directed-Share-Program) for more information. Per our lawyercats, we are not able to respond to further inquiries or questions. **Prospectus and Important Disclosures** *The offering will be made only by means of a prospectus. When available, a copy of the preliminary prospectus related to the offering may be obtained from: Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC, Prospectus Department, 180 Varick Street, New York, New York 10014, or email: prospectus@morganstanley.com; Goldman Sachs & Co. These securities may not be sold nor may offers to buy be accepted prior to the time the registration statement becomes effective. This notification shall not constitute an offer to sell or the solicitation of an offer to buy these securities, nor shall there be any sale of these securities in any state or jurisdiction in which such offer, solicitation, or sale would be unlawful prior to registration or qualification under the securities laws of any such state or jurisdiction.* *No offer to buy the securities can be accepted and no part of the purchase price can be received until the registration statement has become effective, and any such offer may be withdrawn or revoked, without obligation or commitment of any kind, at any time prior to the notice of its acceptance given after the effective date. An indication of interest in response to this notification will involve no obligation or commitment of any kind.*

it not really that big a deal to lower temps inside for say 5-8 hrs vs 5-8 days. The radiant temps of the walls, floors, etc do not drop that much so you are not having to reheat the entire thermal mass vs the air.. When we would go out of town on vacation in winter in NC I would modify the temp program to come on and off at same time but not quite so warm say 66 vs 68 and night temps at same 61. That way when we came back it only took an hourish to get everything back to temp.. Now with the nest etc you can change temp back to normal serval hour before you get home so that work is already done.. While it does take a bit more to get warmed back up the saving offsets that my a lot if find.

I have no idea honestly lol it's earnings was not good but it just seems to be chilling? The outlook didn't even seem particularly great either, digital business is growing but they're still operating a loss, and business in Las Vegas itself is actually down. I guess the narrowing loss on digital sales, the acquisition of Wynn's Michigan holdings, and the legalization in NC is keeping the stock price relatively stable

I’ll have to find what I read it wasn’t a news article it was during a research stint. A summery though is they had a federal subsidy in west VA, VA and NC to provide internet to rural areas and underprivileged people’s homes. The money was subsidized and they were guaranteed payments. They lost that to another network. This was when they were 12 a share.

Wow, let's go point by point: > No. I work for Toyota and commenter above is definitely off track. We have the NC Plant to make more hybrid vehicles. Toyotas belief moving forward is being marketed by their Beyond Zero strategy. Ok cool, what is beyond zero? Negative One? Love the effort I guess... > We’ve heard it countless times in meetings. Basically, what it takes to build one EV they can build 90(?) Hybrid vehicles with that same amount of lithium. Lithium mining is hell on the environment and Toyota knows that so they’re sticking to their guns on Hybrids. There’s a chart for Beyond Zero if you just google it. Super easy to read. Toyota doesn’t give one fuck about EVs and I agree with them. First I think hybrids are great, ANYTHING to reduce carbon footprint. However, you literally work for Toyota and they are going to feed you facts like Fox News does for my Uncle Mike down in Texas. Lithium mining can certainly be hell in the environment, but over the entire life of an EV vs an ICE the EV comes out cleaner. There are opportunities to make mining cleaner. Toyota should still give a fuck about EVs since it is still a part of their drivetrain. The ratio you stated seems believable given that Toyota has only been building hybrids for years now. > The amount of people trading their Teslas/EVs at our dealership these days is astounding. You lose a ton of range when it’s winter time due to cold weather and your average person just can’t have their 200 miles till empty turn into 75 miles till empty on the way home for somewhere. That’s a real thing a friend of mine just dealt with. Also two different customers dealt with it as well all three within the last month.. Toyota has no interest in spewing out EVs when they have a Hybrid vehicle for literally every vehicle in their line up. Hybrids are superior to Toyota until Hydrogen engines come further along. OK since you work at Toyota sales obviously you are seeing trade-ins ... This is some sort of self fulfilling prphecy lol. You don't lose a "ton" of range in winter. You lose 10-15%...ICE engines lose range in the winter too 🙄 your "200 miles to 75 miles" claim is dubious unless they're a jackass driver or actually drove 150 miles without warming the car up (preconditioning, which most of the EV manufacturers let you do from your fucking phone) I'm not claiming EVs are for everyone right now, but those people trading them in and complaining properly lack the most basic patience and planning to avoid range anxiety. Hybrids definitely fill that gap. I own two EVs and have never, ever had an issue...and we constantly drive out to the country and back on weekends. Also, with proper care (like an ICE vehicle), an EV will drive a long time. Batteries will degrade, but it will take 600-800k miles. Also the electric motors will outlast an ICE, that's just physics. The interior of the car will fall apart before the drivetrain stops working. Good luck on the hydrogen, I really hope it works out.

Mentions:#NC
r/investingSee Comment

That’s right! If you open a 529 account, all of your contributions and earnings will not be taxed when you withdraw them - so long as they are spent on qualifying education expenses (tuition, fees, etc). However, if you don’t end up needing the money because your child chose not to go to college you will in most cases be taxed and face an additional 10% penalty on the withdrawal of your earnings. This scares a lot of ppl into using a taxable account. When you open a taxable brokerage account, there is no ability to withdraw your earnings tax free. You will pay capital gains when you go to withdraw that money no matter what it’s for. However if your child chooses not to go to college, it’s no biggie because you can use the money for anything you want without penalty. Personally, I use a 529. I have a feeling my child will go to college and may want to go to grad school. The cost of college is rising every year and 529s can also be spent on room and board, not just tuition and fees. I have a feeling that those costs will outpace what I’m able to save. We are also going to have another kid and 529s are transferable. So if my first kid ends up not using it, it can be used for my second kid. But definitely a decision worth researching to see what makes sense for you. By the way - I’m jealous you live in NC - great public universities!!

>These aren’t people that had been declined Section 8 assistance, this is the waitlist for assistance Source? I checked your NC assertion and median household salary seems to be 74k... People are moving to my city, the population grew by about 10% in the last decade. Even with new construction, there is not enough housing. That’s the same story for any city on both coasts. We can use Charlotte, NC, for example. Median rent is $18,500 a year, and their median rent is also about. I would not call that’s sustainable or affordable, either.

Just anecdotally, as I was driving north to south through Charlotte, NC on thanksgiving I saw 2 Rivian trucks abandoned on the side of the road on 485 (which I assumed had mechanical issues otherwise why leave your 100k truck on the side of the highway). I thought it was kind of a coincidence to see 2 of the same pretty rare vehicles broken down on the same day. Percentage-wise of cars on the road that can’t be a good sign for their reliability...

Hi all, I am a single 30yo resident physician in NC making 60k a year with about 20k saved in residency and was wondering how to maximize short term savings (about a year) before my student loan interest/payments resume end of next year? I am on the US GOVT SAVE income driven repayment plan currently with 290k med school debt who will finish residency in 2025 and will probably make 250k a year then. I already do hospital 401k match and Roth IRA maxing. So for the next 12 months do yall recommend a 1. high yields savings account or 2. Fidelity SPAXX that is 5% right now or 3. CD (around 5.5%) or 4. FXAIX mutual fund or 5. SPY ETF or a 6. Treasury Bill/short term bonds? Thanks so much!

The numbers aren't wrong. The legacy auto EV plants are undeniably shit proposals. They named an Apple Campus in NC and the SC Charlotte Panthers team office and Amazon HQ2 in 2021, 2019 and 2018.

That time of year here in NC where you gotta have a change of clothes for every season throughout the day. Can we just skip this episode and get back to spring?

This is actually the one thing that's going to go down. Not msrp, but more incentives. Demand is slowing. My parents bought a new rav4 for $1,500 over MSRP in Jan. Over on the Toyota sub, someone in NC recently bought a 2023 rav4 hybrid for 3k under msrp.

I think largely depends and people will always shit on someone for their voice, but I’ve heard NC is great, parts of VA are great. I live in California and it’s a state that absolutely gets shit on from people who don’t live there or people who can’t afford it, but if you have a good job here it’s a phenomenal state. I actually live in one of the safest cities in America here in Cali.

We’ve moved past a likely recession. Inflation is broken, the core economy is doing fine. Big business is hiring again. High rates are a net positive (unless you paid too much for a house and now plan to move) My state NC is on fire as always (for better or worse) The EU is fucked as always. RIP Uncle Charlie
