Hello. Thank you for taking time to write a long response. Issue I have is I think there are some major inaccuracies here. It is well documented that the US entered the war to contain communism, due to the 'domino theory'. I'm not sure where you are from (I assume US), but we are taught about this in high school in a genral history course. I assume in the US you might be getting a reconstructed view of history that paints the US in a better light? Could that be true? I am aware the US has an odd school board system where locally elected people can push their agendas into the classroom. Could that be the case here? You claim Vietnam was about making China and Russia work together to strain their relationship. This is not true. It is well documented that the issue was Mao wanted a split from the West, whereas Khrushchev's wanted "peaceful coexistence". Mao saw this as selling out the cause. You can read about it here: [https://daily.jstor.org/a-messy-divorce-the-sino-soviet-split/](https://daily.jstor.org/a-messy-divorce-the-sino-soviet-split/) You stated the loss was a cover story. This is simply not true. The Vietnam war is well documented to have been a almost complete strategic failure because its primary objective failed. Vietnam is still a socialist country to this day. The famous 'fall of saignon' is a well evidenced event that is etched into modern culture. Gosh, even your average 15 year old European kid knows about it. Stanley Karnnow, historian, has written extensively on this. Many reporters were in Vietnam on the ground. There is no conspiracy going on. Good article here I found: [https://digitalcommons.georgiasouthern.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1132&context=aujh](https://digitalcommons.georgiasouthern.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1132&context=aujh) (what I learnt at school: [https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zv7bkqt/revision/3](https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zv7bkqt/revision/3) ) You said th VC insurgency was destroyed. This is also simply untrue. The VC were supported by the NFA and remained strong throughout the war. It was not a quick withdrawel at all. It took the US years to finally leave vietnam, via the Paris Peace Accords. This can be confirmed by looking at the US's own Office of History and the Presidential Library.. again, all of this is well documented. Good summary here: [https://www.ebsco.com/research-starters/history/us-withdrawal-vietnam](https://www.ebsco.com/research-starters/history/us-withdrawal-vietnam) You claim the US entered Afghanistan and Iraq to strain a rival.. again, this is completely false, sorry. The US entered those wars following 9/11 as counter terrorism measures. You can read the 9/1 report, all the reports from the time, numerous books on this topic, news etc... There is no evidence what you said is true that I know of? [https://tnsr.org/2023/06/why-did-the-united-states-invade-iraq-the-debate-at-20-years/](https://tnsr.org/2023/06/why-did-the-united-states-invade-iraq-the-debate-at-20-years/) You claim the US left the middle east as it lost strategic importance. Again, this is simply wrong. The US left the middle east because of pressure domestically, the NSC's own documents showed it had failed its mission to bring about stable states, and wanted to reduce military caualties. These wars were both failures, by and large. Afghanistan is controlled by the Taliban. Iraq is a quasi failed state. The mission failed. I do agree it's likely Europe and the US might be safer from jihadism following the Iraq war, but I think over the long term, these failed states will produce a lot more headaches for the west going forwards.

Gradually buying a bit of NVO for a trade. Not bullish on it returning to the growth story it has been and continue to prefer other names for obesity theme, but the selling is excessive at this point and it's technically very oversold. LVMUY would be interesting if it gets to $100. The railroads are kind of interesting - CP in the low 70's, CSX as if (again, *if*) UNP is allowed to buy NSC, BNSF might take a look at CSX. Some life science/CRO names seem like they're finally turning a bit. I like TTWO in the low $220's (or less) with GTA VI next May. Is there anything that I'm excitedly buying atm? No. The stuff that is very hot I've been trimming a bit and there's some mildly compelling stuff in terms of what's been out of favor, but nothing particularly thrilling.

r/wallstreetbetsSee Comment

UNP acquires NSC (pending the deal they made) and both stocks go down. Im assuming because investors know that this is going to bring up a monopoly argument? The rail union is opposing the merger. Either way it'll be interesting to see how these stocks move.

I think in general being on the acquired end of a potential acquisition is better for shareholder value than on the acquiring end (where they often pay a premium for the shares). UNP/NSC the news is already priced in for sure (hence why UNP is dipping), but if that does go through I think CSX will likely get bought up by someone else (probly BRK who owns BNSF), which isn't as priced in yet. Plus CSX has a good looking chart, solid earnings, a track record of buying back shares, etc. Most importantly, I'm just a regard anyways.

haha too funny. Tom Donilon (chairman of Blackrock) has been effectively setting the democrat party's foreign policy positions for years. he's been in democrat politics for 35+ years. He was the NSA director during the Obama years. He then left gov't (obviously) when Trump won. Became chairman at Blackrock. then when Biden won, Biden wanted to bring him back into the fold by making him his CIA director but Donilon didn't want to leave Blackrock. But he still wanted to make gobs and gobs of money by leveraging US foreign policy for his and Blackrock's own gain. So instead Biden made him co-chair of the foreign policy affairs board at the Dept of State, while still also being employed by Blackrock making investment's for their shareholders, No conflict of interest or insider trading possibility there! lol. Tom Donilon's brother Mike is a senior Advisor to President Biden. Tom's wife Catherine Russel was White House Personnel director and then named director of UNICEF. Tom's daughter Sarah works on the White House National Security Council (NSC) Donilon has his tentacles into every facet of the current democrat party's foreign policy machine. if a war in Ukrain benefits Blackrock, then you can be sure the US dept of state will be in support of a war in ukraine. If supporting a USDC benefits Blackrock then you can be sure the US dep't of state will be in support of a USDC. see how that all works? Blackrock currently sets US foreign policy and has for years under any democrat president. To think Kamala is now going to turn on Donilon and go after his companies is next level stupid. These people tell Obama, Biden and Kamala what they are going to think on every issue. Every democrat president has been balls deep in Donilon's and Blackrock's pocket going back to Obama and including Biden. Kamala will be no different. There was one recent president that wasn't in Donilon's pocket book... I'll let you try to figure out which one it was. kamala going after blackrock lol ok sure kid.

r/wallstreetbetsSee Comment

Freight has better margins overall, but that shouldn't matter. Same is true everywhere else in the world. Yet in America you dont have proper passenger train companies, or electrified tracks, or high speed trains to remove the need for interstate flights, or even a unified railway system to connect **all** the nations' population centers and just the coastal ones. A major contributor to this problem are the fact that these companies own the rights to railways themselves, adding to the stagnation of this industry. BNSF and UNP dominate west of the Mississippi, CSX and NSC dominate east of it( there's also CNI and CP, but Canadian railway companies are a different story). In general, while the rest of the world's usage of railway exploded over the last 100 years, in the US the exact opposite happened. And it shouldn't have and the reason it did is due to a combination of all the points I previously mentioned.

You should only trade CCs on stocks you have researched and are willing to hold for a time if the price drops. This does not mean a long term hold, but for weeks or a month of more. A high quality stock may drop but will also usually move back up in a reasonable time. There are a few techniques that may help. The first is to lower the net stock cost before buying shares by selling puts to collect premiums on stocks you have a neutral or bullish sentiment on and are willing to hold for a while if needed. If the puts go ATM then they can be rolled to collect more credits, and which can lower the net stock cost by a fair amount in most cases. Instead of $20 as the stock cost, the premiums collected can see this drop to a net stock cost of $19 and possibly even lower. This gives some room for the stock to go down and not lose money right away. Some may sell more OTM puts which can both bring in more premiums to keep lowering the net stock cost (NSC), but also reduce the NSC by averaging down if more shares are assigned. This requires having more capital to buy the shares and ensure the risk of any stock is not too big for the account. Selling CCs can also bring in more premium to keep lowering the net stock cost. Over time the cost can be lowered by enough so that it may still be possible to close with either a profit, no loss or a minimal loss. Dividends may also be collected to help lower the NSC. Using this "profit manufacturing" process and given enough time and patience most good quality stocks can recover from a stock drop, but it is not always possible. The credits collected can still reduce the amount of the loss and working the process can be very helpful. I posted my wheel strategy some time ago and this can have a high win rate due to being able to have the shares called away if assigned - [The Wheel (aka Triple Income) Strategy Explained : r/options (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/options/comments/a36k4j/the_wheel_aka_triple_income_strategy_explained/)

r/optionsSee Comment

It is not clear if you were trying to run the wheel or not, but if you were then a few things to point out. First, is that your analysis needs to be the stock is a good one you do not mind holding if needed. Being an "ok choice" is not good enough as you are aware. It's unclear if you held over the ER, but if you did then this could have been a risk. When this has to happen rolling out 30ish days will move the trade farther out and collect a higher premium that can be helpful. You would have collected premiums from both the opening trade and the roll, so your net stock cost is something below $42. Calculate the NSC is to better understand where you can sell a CC above that amount. If your analysis is that the stock is still a good one to hold (which you say is not the case) then see if you can sell CCs at or close to your NSC. Going out a 45 to 50 dte does show some small premiums for example. A tactic many use if they still are bullish on a stock, and the account can handle it without too much risk, is to sell more puts to collect more premiums and continue to lower the NSC. This includes being ready to be assigned more shares if it happens. If the analysis is that the stock is not going to move back up in a reasonable timeframe and you lost conviction, then closing for a loss can be considered. This should not happen often if the stock selection part of your trading plan has chosen a good stock to trade. If this happens more than once or twice in a year or two then the process should be reviewed to ensure good stocks are traded. To close out of the shares can be to sell them outright, or to sell a short duration CC ATM to collect as much premium as possible to lower the max loss. If the stock analysis shows it is a good one to hold then closing a put for loss should never be required. But if conviction is lost prior to being assigned then closing can be considered. Again, the stock analysis and selection process should be reviewed to select better stocks. Continued rolling can help avoid being assigned as well as collect more premiums to reduce the NSC and help the position recover sooner. I posted my entire trading plan that goes over these points in more detail if it helps - [The Wheel (aka Triple Income) Strategy Explained : r/options (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/options/comments/a36k4j/the_wheel_aka_triple_income_strategy_explained/)

You need a title company, a deed, a deed of trust and a note. Both the Title company and any good note servicing company will have prototypes you can start with as will any real estate attorney. Definitely use a note servicing company for you to pay the P&I and monthly escrow to and that company will forward the p&i to your father. They will also pay the taxes and insurance out of the escrow acct and do your 1098 and his 1099 annually. They basically service the note so you don't have to. The fee is modest. I pay $30/month to my NSC for each note they manage. Also Dad will need to charge the applicable federal long term rate or a touch more in order to not have it called a below interest rate note and get into gifting issues. That would be a touch under 6% this month. So a 6% note would do what you want. [https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/rr-24-03.pdf](https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/rr-24-03.pdf)

I think there’s merit in investing in sector specific etfs. But my goal isn’t to beat the market but compliment/ subsidize it. I own shares of NSC and wish I could hold shares in all railroad companies because I think they have a lot of value. But I also believe the US’s infrastructure will receive a lot of funds in the coming years, or at least I’m praying, so I hold an infrastructure etf that has railroad and infrastructure companies. If it’s a good year I think it will underperform the general market and I’m hoping during bad years it will do slightly better. I think I’ve held the etf for a year or two. In 10 years I’ll find this post and let you know if it worked out for me.

For 2 you need to calculate the net stock cost (not cost "basis" which is a tax term) that includes how much you've earned from trading the stock. The NSC will include premiums collected from selling puts and CCs. I use a simple spreadsheet that can be easily duplicated to track the NSC to know when I can close a put for a net profit, or what strike to choose for a CC. See this wheel trading plan for the example - [https://www.reddit.com/r/options/comments/a36k4j/the\_wheel\_aka\_triple\_income\_strategy\_explained/](https://www.reddit.com/r/options/comments/a36k4j/the_wheel_aka_triple_income_strategy_explained/)

**Don't sell below the net stock cost unless you are OK with the shares being called away at that price!** Theta decay works best below about 60 dte so selling farther out also doesn't make much sense. Selling 90+ dte will lock in the price even if the stock starts to move up, which is what you want. IMO there are three options. 1) Just wait until the stock moves back up. If you traded this stock as one you wouldn't mind holding for a time if needed, and you expect it to move back up sooner than later, then hold it and wait until you can sell CCs at or above the net stock cost. It may pay a dividend to collect along the way that can also lower the NSC and a good ERs or other news may see the stock move up. 2) If your analysis indicates this is a high quality stock and you account can support more shares meaning you have the cash plus it won't be too much of an overall risk, then selling more puts can bring in premiums to lower the net stock cost. Carefully track this net cost to sell CCs at or above it. While the stock may be sold below the purchased cost basis the overall net of the position can be profitable based on the premiums collected. 3) If your analysis indicates the stock is no longer one you want to hold, and is unlikely to come back up in a reasonable time, then consider selling CCs below the net stock cost to have the shares called away. The capital can then be redeployed more productively instead of being stagnant. Which of the 3 choices above most matches the stock and your analysis??

UBS, it would be lovely. or HSBC. PCG or NSC would do the justice.

The problem is because Robinhood does not allow short position. Because the underlyings are still halted on the NASDAQ (T12 codes), the options are also halted. Thus, the only way to get paid out is to exercise the long puts before March expiration (go short the stock) and then cover the stock when (and if) they ever open again. It makes you think that there must be something going on behind the scenes. Everyone knows that both underlyings have minimal value because of the banks seizures. Why haven't the underlyings open? Is it because the people who are long the underlyings will face a margin call that they cannot meet? Is it because they know that retail owns a lot of puts and will get screwed if the put options expire worthless (because they cannot exercise the puts)? Everyone should be upset with NASDAQ for keeping both underlyings halted. Because if they can do it to SNBY and SIVB, then the regulators can do this for any other underlying using some BS excuse (i.e., let's halt NSC because of the train derailments in Ohio). Honest markets don't do these things.

As someone who owns stock in NSC and knows a little about the railroad industry, I would think that the long term stock market returns (30 years or more) of this company will be similar to CSX, UNP, CNI, or CP. Short term bad news rarely has any significance to the long term returns of a company. The railroad industry is just like any other industry. There are times when the sun shines and there are times when darkness prevails. The sun doesn't always shine for multi decades, and reversion to the mean is a real phenomenon. I would feel more comfortable today just buying a broad based index fund or etf, than purchasing stocks in the railroad industry. Just my two cents.

watch the NSC/SPX ratio. if it ever dips way below the mean like in covid, that would be your generational buying opp

>1. NSC has not dipped below that level because it is a strong company with a good reputation. It has been able to weather the pandemic better than most companies, and so investors are still confident in its future prospects. 2. Yes, it would make sense to buy puts on NSC at this point. The stock price is likely to sink lower in the near future as more news of train derailments comes out, and investor confidence diminishes further.

NSC down 12% the past month and S&P500 down 4%. So you know, what you’d expect after a massive public disaster. It’s actually worse if you go back a whole year with NSC being 15% below the S&P.

NSC has a beta of 1.3 vs tsla beta of 2.0, which means they trade differently and can’t really compare the quick recovery of tsla to NSC. Not to mention, TSLA doesn’t really even trade on fundamentals but hype instead. Just because one stock drops and then rebounds doesn’t mean that pattern will repeat for the same stock, and definitely not for other stocks.

my first thought was “wow must be a big move for a railroad company. buy at a discount for divvies” but then I look at the chart and share price has done really well. incredible run. Then I look at a NSC/SPX and I see that it is slightly outperforming now but doesn’t seem to deviate that much from it historically. idk if I would buy this over the S&P from a risk/reward perspective, since it has been slightly outperforming lately but NSC/SPX seems to trade in a slight channel. IMO if it suddenly goes down a lot and NSC/SPX goes down like in covid, it’s a buy and hold forever. Otherwise, there isn’t enough “sex and violence” in it for me. If the spill has created an insane buying opportunity, it hasn’t happened.

NSC isn't really down by that much. In the last month it's down about 9%. That's more than any other railroad, but not really a lot. If you're betting on it rebounding....well, that's not much of a bonus. It's not even down to it's October lows.
