Lithium mining plays

2026 is the year of materials. B, GOLD, SLV, HYMC, PLG. Fertilizer is also a solid play. SQM / MOS, crushing it this year.

Love the comment, but foolish is tough imo, or maybe rather, im a fool. Turnarounds are real... SNDK was multi yr low ($28) less than a year ago.. WDC ($28 too 😉).. if we take it back a bit, within 5 years FCX was $5 bucks. Lithium? ALB, SQM. For greater diversity, ELAN. etc. NVO is an interesting current, imo. The Co is chugging on all cylinders but the stock has continually cratered. Whats wrong with #2 and potentially superior international reach?

The S&P is up 14% this year, im up 20%. I went heavy into cash in February right before the Canada tariffs went into effect and bought back in when everything was crashing after liberation day. I bought Albemarle, TSMC, Google and SQM at bargain basement prices. I bought Coca Cola Consolidated (COKE, the bottling company) for too much and then watched it go sideways until a couple weeks ago. Right now I dont see much opportunity, I'm thinking about CN Rail but I'm actually putting new money into Bank of America preferred stock as a defensive move.

If you’re digging into battery/AI metals, keep an eye on **ALB (Albemarle)** for lithium, **SQM** in Chile, and some of the mid-tier plays like **LTHM (Livent)** \- valuations are stretched but pullbacks = opportunity. For broader exposure, some folks park cash in **LIT ETF** instead of chasing single names. Just make sure you track supply/demand cycles ‘cause these names can get whippy fast.

I'm from Chile. There are lithium companies in my country. SQM's stock (a Chilean lithium company) has behaved similarly to ALB's. First of all, I didn't invest in lithium because it seemed like a bubble driven by the electric car hype. My reason for believing this is simple. In my country, there are many copper companies. I have friends who work in copper and lithium companies. They told me something quite simple: copper is scarce and difficult to extract, so it will be valuable, and copper companies will continue to be valuable. But lithium is very easy to extract, and there are many countries and places with lithium (a new deposit was recently discovered in the USA and another in my country, lol). The fact that it's an easy-to-extract resource is a problem. Even if electric cars are adopted worldwide in the future, it's still easy to extract. Lithium stocks will never return to what they were at the time of the hype. I was told this when lithium stocks were at their ATH. I thought they would go down and remain stable, but I never imagined such a steep drop. Personally, I think they can recover some of their value, but on a modest scale, you can get better returns in traditional or technology stocks.

Currently nobody makes money with lithium as supply has still not adjusted to stagnating demand. So it becomes a game of outlasting the competition. With that in mind the most important metric is cost sensitivity. How long can you last with Spodumene and LiOH prices being in the gutter. With US trade relations souring with EU and Asia the biggest markets for renewables is vanishing for Albemarle. I have small positions on SQM and Tianqi Lithium because I expect them to outlast the pain. With that being said I expect more pain to come and more buying opportunities. Please note that Im not a professional, just wanted to share my opinion.

That’s an interesting position. For me, the fact that ALB is more diversified and overall a more resilient company, I think it presents a better risk-adjusted return. While SQM is more of a pure lithium play, and as you pointed out, the Chilean government presents a major risk. To be honest, that alone makes it almost untouchable in my opinion. Overall, I think ALB is a generally safe long term play with significant upside from its lithium exposure, in comparison to SQM which may have slightly more upside if everything goes perfectly, but comes with significant downside risk.

Temporary glut in the lithium market is crushing lithium miners bottom lines. This will probably pass in a couple years and their values will probably skyrocket. SQM is another solid lithium play.

Mentions:#SQM
r/investingSee Comment

That's not the issue; lithium is a commodity and lithium companies are subject to the cyclical nature of its costs. Right now the expectation is that lithium prices are bottoming and demand will be rapidly rising over the coming decade. Competition with China makes it worse. There are a limited number of lithium mines, only one truly vertically integrated company and several of the largest mines are under near-constant threat of nationalization. I'm not saying buy or don't buy lithium stocks, but ALB; ALTM; SQM are quality companies (though SQM is one under occasional threat of nationalization). For my part, I hold 1% of my portfolio in lithium stocks which have finally felt some love recently. I wouldn't put more than 1% of my portfolio in any commodity, especially one as volatile as lithium.

Lithium is a bloodbath rn...I'm not even looking at my portfolio. Every lithium company is cutting costs and trying to extend their runway until the next bull run. Expect major consolidation to take place in the international stage a few months from now. Only yesterday +10% on good ALB/SQM news due to "Chile opens lithium salt flats." Also worth noting: Elon Musk Is Betting On Lithium And I Am Too With Lithium Argentina Tesla - Is building a lithium refinery in Texas as well as signing new lithium supply agreements with Piedmont Lithium (PLL). BYD - Is considering a car plant in Mexico. Exxon - Is expanding next door to Standard Lithium in Arkansas to get into Lithium. Shell (SHEL) - Closing hydrogen fuel stations in California. Mentions:#SQM
r/wallstreetbetsSee Comment

It doesn't really matter if the US incentives it or not, at the end what matters is if they're cost effective. I'm assuming they are if they're willing to invest all that money on mining lithium, but will they be able to compete cost wise with SQM or ALB? I'm not quite sure, these are companies that were around when no one cared about lithium and they sold it for agriculture purpose, it means they're solid. If we assume LAC was profitable before lithium boom then they'd be around back when lithium main use was for agriculture, but they weren't meaning (imo) they won't be as cost effective. It's a huge risk considering lithium volatility. And also considering its pretty normal that commodities usually do this to wipe down competition (drop prices to halt new competitors, its similar to "dumping" in monopolies) With current prices most of those "new" proyects are now halted exactly for that same reason: extraction costs make them unprofitable. So imo that's the biggest and most important issue to investigate. And I wouldn't take their own opinion as granted, who's going to admit they're not cost effective in the middle of a huge investment plan lol.

Mentions:#SQM#ALB#LAC

It will depend on their operational costs. SQM and ALB have extremely low operational costs which is why they can survive with decent dividend yields despite low lithium prices. Idk if LAC will do that.

SQM should increase its stonk price in a couple of years as the government gave them a golden parachute. They have more extraction rights, in a joint venture with Codelco, in the Atacama salar. The other players in Chile are fucked because SQM basically owns every poltician, from commie to nazis. This pains me particularly as I have an agreement with other player to provide some services when/if they receive their extraction rights... The cost of extraction here is so low that with lower prices the margin for SQM will still be interesting.

If you're bullish on lithium for the long term, consider looking into established lithium producers like Albemarle Corporation (ALB), Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile (SQM), and Livent Corporation (LTHM). These companies are well-positioned to benefit from the expected growth in the lithium market due to their strong market presence and production capabilities. Additionally, you might want to explore lithium-focused ETFs like the Global X Lithium & Battery Tech ETF (LIT), which provides exposure to a basket of companies involved in lithium mining and battery production. As for 2024, keep an eye on developments in the electric vehicle (EV) market, as increased EV adoption is a major driver for lithium demand. Continued consolidation in the industry could also present new investment opportunities in lithium stocks. Happy Investing!!

Short term, I would hold Chinese EV stocks. Long term I'd put my money on $TSLA because of the infrastructure. $TSLA is becoming the clear winner in the EV. If instead the government supported $TSLA for the infrastructure, EV could have leaped forward, but the government in itself became a hindrance including inviting Chinese battery manufacturers that may not even materialize as $F and $GM start to abandon projects. Use cost less. There are no emissions when you own the EV. Building the EV blows all of that out of the water. Countries bypass by ensuring the materials required for EVs are not exracted or refined on their soil. Tade agreements exclude country of origin for the toxic minerals because of where the mines are situated. Every country who does this has no mining industry that extracts those minerals that supports the sector. No European country outside of Russia has sustainable mining industry for these. Canada is one of the few that does, using tax credits, and pushing experimental technology and pilot projects onto taxpayers. Stellantis, Volkswagon and Northvolt have been handed a crapload of money, free, on prime agricultural land, to build assembly plants without actual guarantees from governments. The Quebec Batterie project is banking on end-of-life recycling which, to date has only worked on AA batteries. Country of origin is not anywhere in the picture. Only 1 company in Canada has an electric fleet of excavators, extractors and loaders. Its a penny lithium stock on a pilot project with Caterpillar. Only 1 smelter does not use coal coke or coal derivatives. The hole in the ground required to extract all the toxic minerals required for 1 EV is 2 football fields long (placed end to end), 2 fields wide by 1 field deep. That does not include the usual Aluminum, Cobalt, Nickel and Iron. Add to that tailings ponds, water table contamination, etc. You can boil it down to 5 or 6 companies outside of BRIC miners who mine the minerals, including SQM, LAC, BHP and RIO. How large are their 'electric' fleets ? Then there are the refiners, the material transformers who use an insane amount of power - not environmentally friendly either. Make bitcoin miners look like kids flying kites in a storm. And use Coal coke to boot. 'No emissions' has to include exctration, transport and transformation or else its hypocritical at best. At the moment, it does not. Probably why COP meetings are lacking the credibility they desperately seek.

I think the iRobot deal goes through so shares at $39 are a solid chunk below the $51 deal price. Some reits are cheap. Ah one more, I think the market is overdoing it on lithium. Long term demand still outpaces Supply by a moonshot. Long $alb. Smaller positions in SQM and LAAC

> Nitrates like saltpeter are also a good option, since the first use is as fertilizer, and if we will be more people and more animals, we will need a lot of fertilizer. SQM is the only one producing it right now in the world. Buuut synthetic saltpeter is cheaper, so it's more used. About Fertilizers, I am with Verde Agritech.

Not a single stock is safe. Some can be safer either way, i would go with something hard to sustitue. Lithium can be substituted by sodium in its battery use, chinese are researching that. Copper could be substituted by graphene on terms of conductivity, maybe soon or not, it depends on achievements on research. Also silicon could be replaced with graphene in terms of semiconductors, like chips and such. We can now make diamonds a lot cheaper than natural ones, so I don't know why they are still that expensive. Silver in its application on solar panels (10% annual production) can be substituted with copper anytime soon, they're researching that too. Palladium also not a good bet long time, because 50% of its annual production goes to catalytic converters. If we move on to electric cars, then there is no need for that. If we move to hydrogen cars, it would be less required. Platinum has the same problem, with near 51% of it annual production going to catalytic converters. Gold is very variable, since 70% of its annual production goes to jewelry, you rely on global economy. Uranium can be a hit or miss. Several countries in Europe are turning off their nuclear powers, and it takes a long time to build a nuclear power. Iodine could be a good idea, since approximately half of it is used as nutritional supplement for humans and animals. Since the population will grow, we will need more food, therefore more animals. More humans and more animals= more need of iodine. Remember also that many countries have iodine salt. Sadly, the greatest producer is SQM (From Santiago de chile stock exchange) whose principal business is lithium. Japan is the second producer, but the method they use is not as good as chilean, therefore it's not as rentable as SQM's method. Nitrates like saltpeter are also a good option, since the first use is as fertilizer, and if we will be more people and more animals, we will need a lot of fertilizer. SQM is the only one producing it right now in the world. Buuut synthetic saltpeter is cheaper, so it's more used. Iron, zinc and nickel should move with a high correlation, but i don't really know. Zinc (50%) is primarily used for galvanized steel, and nickel (68%) for stainless steel Aluminium I don't know about it. Maybe buy SQM and call it a day. I think they are also on NYSE but I'm not sure Disclaimer: this is informative and I'm not a financial advisor, so you should make your own research.

Own and holding SQM, RIO, and PLL for long term. Would be buying more right now if I had the extra cash and didn’t feel overleveraged in them

It's in Spanish (SQM is from Chile), and I don't get the jist of what happened, and I won't read the whole thing. But I jumped in at $48.20. Stop is at breakeven. No harm, no foul if it doesn't work.

SQM running on news of a secret pre-negotiation with the Chilean government regarding the Salar de Atacama (place with a lot of lithium). The thing that triggered the move is [here](https://www.elciudadano.com/reportaje-investigacion/el-pre-acuerdo-entre-codelco-y-sqm-por-el-salar-de-atacama/11/13/).

I’d buy Chinese stocks tomorrow. Biden and Xi meeting in SF on Wednesday, there will be some positive gestures and pronouncements that will pop some Chinese’s stocks. China’s grip on copper just announced. I’d buy copper stocks like FCX, SQM is cheap now.

Well they are not bad stocks, in the long run they should do well, as for Mara and RKLB I dont know much about, but as for TSLA, ENPH, SQM, SPWR,PLUG in the next 10 years you should be fine, but you should divesify into other sectors instead of being all in the same sector (energy) your only holding out of these that is not energy is BN. Try dividend investing, stocks go down you still get paid in dividends along the year.

Buying single stocks is risky. TSLA is a meme stock. I believe both it and ENPH will continue to go down over the near future. Try value investing. SQM has a poor history. If you want the lowest risk and lowest cost, look at VOO. BRK.B deserves a look also. SCHG beat the market this last year but is currently tanking. You’ll lose a lot less in funds like this where you’re not invested in just one stock. VOO holds TSLA at a little less than 2% of its portfolio.

SQM stands out from the bunch as it’s actually a very cheap stock even at these lithium prices. These other stocks are harder to get behind. For example, the Tesla valuation is bat shit crazy. It could drop by 90% and still be expensive. ENPH may be pursuing dead end and unprofitable energy technology.

Is it better to buy lithium brine stocks like SQM or Australian hard rock?

This is just my 5 cent after spending few minutes looking at each company. Just to let you know in my opinion there has to be story driving future of each company and numbers to support business. My opinion here is strictly based on numbers since I can't speak to the story of each company. At minimum TSLA, ENPH and SQM look like well run companies and are reasonably priced if they can deliver numbers analysts are predicting. TSLA at $235 is not fantastic bargain but is not bad at this price, if they can keep reasonable growth you may make decent profit in few years. ENPH I know nothing about prospects of this company but looking in the rear view mirror and analysts growth prediction $126 seem to be good purchase price if continues to grow. Unless financials star declining I think you need to worry about this one too much. MARA Is the one I would cut my loses, if it has bright future you jump to early on this one. Right now there is more risk then upside. SQM this is mining company and these tend to be cyclical so based when in cycle you got in you can do good or bad this is why I invest in mining difficult. However this one looks to be well run operation and if there is continuing demand for lithium this one could be good investment. SPWR Less then mediocre run company. The only upside I see if someone buys them out. I would cut my loses and move on. PLUG Know nothing about this company or industry. But large debt, free cash flow loses 2 times over revenue. This looks like candidate for bankruptcy. I would move on. RKLB Moderately growing revenue but no earnings, no free cash flow, some debt and increasing float. Right now more risk then upside. I would cut losses and move on. For the TSLA, ENPH and SQM don't watch prices everyday instead watch financials and monitor if these are improving.

 |Ticker|WSJ 12-Month Target Price|WSJ Earnings Outlook| |:-|:-|:-| |TSLA|$246.68|Favorable| |ENPH|$169.68|Favorable| |MARA|$12.33|Unfavorable| |SQM|$82.79|Flat| |SPWR|$8.25|Favorable| |PLUG|$14.92|Favorable| |BN|$45.40|Favorable| |RKLB|$8.84|Mixed| CFRA has a strong sell rating on Marathon Digital (MARA). I would sell. I don't think you're going to break even on SunPower (SPWR), either. CFRA doesn't having a rating for SQM, but based on [the forecast earnings growth, or lack thereof](https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/SQM/research-ratings), I'm skeptical, but it may come back. I like lithium, although I don't own any. The rest (TSLA, ENPH, PLUG, BN, RKLB) will probably recover within a year.

At the very least, you should’ve bailed on SQM a while ago when Chile started talking about nationalizing the lithium mines.

SQM is my largest holding of a single stock. Its a long term hold and undervalued imo. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/unveiling-sociedad-quimica-y-minera-153904232.html. Im not worried at all about the chilean referendum or inflation for SQM. In 10 years I think the return will have best the S&P500 but just because I'm not entirely stupid, I hold four times as much VOO, VB, and VTI as I do SQM.

CFRA and Morningstar both expect ALB to recover >>$215. Morningstar expects SQM to recover, but CFRA doesn’t cover it. No info on PLL or SLI. Not the end of the world, assuming you can wait a year.

I read about the oversupply from china and that for example SQM is risky. My consideration is LTHM. Following [https://www.statista.com/statistics/452025/projected-total-demand-for-lithium-globally/](https://www.statista.com/statistics/452025/projected-total-demand-for-lithium-globally/) the demand will increase. One more risk may be that another solution for batterys will reduce lithium demand but I think it takes some years to implement a new solution. I will continue to read about lithium.
