Not to be too much of a Mom booster, but because I'm proud of her: I could show you the investments she made in BDX and LLY in the 80s, into AMGN and REGN in the 90s, into AAPL and SYK and CAH and EW in the aughts, into LRCX around 2010, all of which I still hold along with my own investments. She made lots of lousy investments as well—HP! Intel! 3Com! Cisco! Mom says: if you can research companies and identify ones that are well-run, profitable and growing; if you never put more into one investment than you'd be willing to lose; if you can be patient and wait decades to see results, in the long run the good ones grow so much that the ones that don't grow are a rounding error.

With dividends reinvested, investors made full recovery between 2011- 2012. But again, not all investors where down on everything because many pivoted to defensive stocks that were gaining.

My bad, I should have specified - my large caps are fairly tech heavy and my mid and small caps and international holdings have a momentum leaning so you can imagine it's been a turbulent few days. Thankfully though, my value positions are doing pretty alright, with pretty solid holdings in healthcare especially holding me up(AMGN, JNJ, UNH).

I like cybersecurity—I have CRWD and NET. I also like biotech and healthcare—I have JNJ and AMGN. I also recommend you own some of the hyperscalers which are basically ETFs since they have so many different revenue streams (GOOGL, AMZN and MSFT). I don’t own META out of principle, they’re addicting a whole generation, limiting their attention span and ruining their self esteem.

There’s no answer to your question here… go buy a book on investing. Read it. Buy another… rinse + repeat. Over time you will learn what your style is. If $ is an issue, a local library will have books too. YouTube videos are worthless. How much learning did you do before you bought shares in your first stock? I read at least 3 or 4 before buying AMGN shares 30+ years ago and even then was under educated. Good luck, it takes time..

Thanks for asking! :-) I think there are so many small, speculative companies in the space, and the barriers to launching a successful pharmaceutical are so high for them, it’s difficult to pick winners there. But you can assume that if something really great is discovered by one of the small players, it will be bought up by one of the large players before it becones profitable. So in my view investing in the large players is a fairly safe bet on the future of the whole sector. I’m very long on LLY, AMGN, REGN, and EW.

This has been a a hit and miss for me - had some clear losses, quite a few go-nowhere stocks and a really handful (one hand) super winners (x multiples). The winners, which were lucky, makes me look smart in the mirror (no one cares). Givenall that, I did buy a few big tech dividend payers (hey CISCO, IBM, QCOM, AMGN etc - all did nothing when I owned them) whose dividends were consolation prizes. So, my --two-cents-- is to consider no-regret dividend growth stocks in your plans

I spent some time on small cap biotech in early 2025 and concluded financial disclosures alone aren't enough to buy. Most have no earnings and are just looking for the next hot drug. It seems like you need to know their patent application pipeline - which is a lot of work and still very difficult to make value calls on unless you also have some idea of the patent universe for that class of chemicals. (Ph.D. in the space with a J.D. btw) Did buy a couple closer to mid caps - OGN (fortunately exited in early Oct but still see a value story) and VTRS. Also like the larger caps like AMGN and ABBV.

Agreed. Data was not 100% blowout so its a sell the news event. Fact is, VKTX remains the only direct competitor to LLY because the molecule is nearly identical with the same MOA. LLY will be announcing their oral Tirzepetide product soon I bet, this will further validate VKTX as a solid play. Will it be the best product on the market? maybe, maybe not. Will it be top 3? yes with LLY and NVO. Is it better than PFE, AMGN, MRK, Roche, etc? Yep. If those companies want to compete its the right company to partner with. Lastly, NVO's cost to mfg is huge compared to Tirzepetide, I imagine VKTX will have similar costs to LLY when all is said an done. meaning as price erodes VKTX still has an opportunity to capture a good portion of market share from NVO.

In 2020 I went to 100% cash in the third week of January. I started buying way out of the money puts on cruise lines, airlines, hotel chains. Most of these paid between 50x to 100x. I was looking at AMGN but didn't pull the trigger before it went ex-div. I'm looking at preferreds, would like another small bank. Might buy back the AAL I sold in January. If OZKAP drops below $16 again I would add a few hundred to my position. But most of the time, if I am buying something new, it is a company I have owned before that announced a merger, or didn't meet quarterly expectations and got clobbered. I like a sale.
