You can take 500 1-oz silver rounds into a local coin shop and leave with $18,000 and no paperwork needed. Not saying that you don’t have to pay taxes, but it’s a lot less documentation than selling an ETF. If planning to keep 6 months of spendable cash on hand for emergencies, dollars are great but precious metals usually do better against inflation. So for long term, they’re better than mattress money. Preparedness for the zombie apocalypse and/or EMP detonation is kind of less likely but an added bonus, I guess.

We should stop it, we have become too good at war that this is a complete waste of money. It would be largely space based and would shift the center of gravity (aka our Achilles heel) of our military to space. So now the majority of our comms, GPS, over-the-horizon missile defense, and a huge chunk of our GDP is space dependent, that is basically begging for near peer rival to drop a nuke in space and EMP everything. Especially if that country had: 1. A moon base to have their space based comms fall back to after all the satellites fell to the earth 2. Didn’t have a large international presence that required a space communication system And 3. Only had to defend a continuous continent upon which you could have reliable optical cables to maintain communications. It is useless against any sub-state organization and any near-peer would easily bring it down.

Brilliant Pebbles operate in LEO (ICBMs, let alone smaller IRBMs etc, never get close to GSO, which is more expensive to get to anyways). The idea is that you have enough of them in periodic orbits that in any given window you can intercept all enemy missiles. This isn't actually as crazy as it sounds. It was probably technically feasible [but ludicrously expensive] in the 1990s, but SpaceX's Starlink is already near the size of most proposed Brilliant Pebbles schemes and operates in a similar orbital regime. We've also conducted successful exoatmospheric intercepts of IRBMs using ground-based missiles, which is actually a significantly more difficult task. The main problems remaining are sensors [networking is largely taken care of with the evolution of comm lasers] for guidance onto target, and hardening against nuclear EMP and radiation "noise". There's also more exotic schemes, including for stealth UAVs with minaturized YAL-1 style lasers to burn through ballistic missiles in the boost stage [with the idea being that they're constantly orbiting places like North Korea], and for direct energy weapons, and of course old standbys like nuclear-tipped interceptor rockets, but the Brilliant Pebbles themselves are pretty feasible.

When the EU no longer gives a shit about what the USA wants because of tariffs, they won't ban the sale of ASML systems to SMIC (not to be confused with SMCI Supermicro) and the EUV tech will get them down to 2-3nm overnight. Sure, heavily subsidized by the Chinese government...but whatev...the end result is breaking TSMC's stranglehold on the highest grade silicon fab. The chip designs in China are meh - copies/extensions of existing ARM/x86 tech...they even straight up steal the licensing off ARM. But...if the tariffs, and service cuts in the USA are to continue the science and engineering brain-drain will happen. Whether to the EU or Asian under China's influence doesn't matter. Cock-blocking China on chip exports ...meh, it's strategic, not a long term solution. Drone AI that can aim-bot your head from 50yrds for <$1000/drone already exists - thank MIT drone labs 10yrs ago. Drop them out of a plane with GPS grid for them to kill all the people not carrying a red arm-band or IR flash on their helmet....easy mode. How many can you deploy? China can build them faster. They'll all be susceptible to EMP so...meh it's not much different than a WMD war anyway. Ukraine is using radio remotes ...it's stone-age compared to what is coming. The tech for an ai drone is already used in those AI cameras that read license plate tech and identify persons for home surveillance that's not an NVDA gpu export. Training tech is, but that's already out there.

A dome would have to protect the ground up to 3mi high for there to be no physical damage. There would still be damage to electronics from EMP waves. A golden dome would have to be in space even though space starts at about 60mi

When will bears realize that a literal EMP could be dropped on this country, taking out the entire power system, and price would still pump to a million dollars a share. THE MARKET DEFIES THE LAWS OF NATURE.

No problem. Another way to look at this is to realize that a lightning bolt is a highly localized EMP blast. Lightning can set fires and damage anything that isn't protected, like a person standing in a field in a rainstorm, but computers don't break just because there was a lightning strike nearby. Airplanes routinely get hit by lightning, but they don't fall out of the sky when that happens.

Mentions:#EMP

Cars, trucks and tractors will all work after an EMP blast. The metal body acts as a Faraday cage to route electrons away from the sensitive stuff in the middle. This is why the safest place to be in a lightning storm is inside a car.

Mentions:#EMP

An EMP blast won't wipe out all machines in existence. It will set fire to power lines and blow up transformers, but that's because a power line is an antenna hundreds of miles long that's going to gather lots of energy from the blast. Any electronics that are reasonably well shielded will be safe if they aren't plugged in. A computer simply isn't a big enough antenna to gather enough energy to damage it, and the case acts as a Faraday cage to route electrons away from the sensitive stuff in the middle. Electronics that are plugged in they might get their power supplies fried if fuses and circuit breakers fail, but power supplies can be replaced and the data stored on the drives won't be erased. If you think an EMP attack is eminent, just unplug your computer and put it in a metal box, like a washing machine. It will be perfectly safe there. Data centers like the ones investment banks use are prepared for EMP events. Any rooms containing computers will be giant Faraday cages. All data will get backed up to multiple locations, at least one of which will be off-site. When there are billions of dollars stored on hard drives, you can be sure that the owners of those drives have taken multiple steps to protect their data against a sudden blast of electrons. An EMP attack would probably end trading for the day, but it won't cause any money to just evaporate.

Yeah, in a full nuclear exchange with EMP blasts, your portfolio allocation becomes irrelevant, paper assets effectively hit zero. Your real portfolio would be survival essentials, shelf-stable food, water purification, medical supplies, and practical skills. Gold might retain some value for local trading, but only after immediate survival needs are met. Financial markets require functioning infrastructure and societal stability, both gone in that scenario.

Gold would be completely worthless if an EMP were to go off. You can’t eat gold, and with how heavily we rely on technology for our food, the world would starve. If I remember right there was a similar short lived effect after 9/11 due to all the planes being grounded. Less thin cloud cover from contrails (NOT CHEMTRAILS) meant the earth absorbed more heat. Pretty interesting finding and kind of damning. The things we do to contribute to climate change actually slightly hinder it too, or at least slow the measurable effects. Going cold turkey as in a massive EMP event would likely lead to a period of more accelerated climate change. Wild stuff.

Here is the challenge that we might be forgetting about. Covid should have been a wake up call to have every country to realize that the supply chains and diversification of resources globally, while have a great way to lower costs, there are issues during a crisis. We are one more pandemic or crisis away from a serious "how do I get basic or emergency items to the country?" Almost all ppe is made overseas, including many pharmaceutical medicines. That is an issue. You add the technology issue of all semiconductors, or at least most, are made in an area of the world that is hostile to us... that is also an issue. It is not just a matter of who gets Ai and llm first, but also who controls the equipment for them. If you add the example that every transport for the President is taken back to the bolts and reassembled to verify nothing out of the ordinary is there, but we trust that nothing is embedded in our personal devices we use... that is a hiccup too. Then you think of our energy grids, energy needs, and how decimated they are... one EMP or cyber attack and we are f'ed. We need power for the technology, food, and medical in country, and not have a debt that a country like China or somewhere else can dump almost $1T in US bonds on the market to cause an issue like or worse than the last 6 calendar days. There is a lot to fix, and unfortunately a lot needs to be done ASAP because it is overdue. Hell, I got caught in the cross hairs during this bs... I lost a lot... realized loss, not just paper. But I also know if someone of these things don't get handled at "warp speed", things will be much, much, much worse if the US falls. The world relies on the US for patrolling the seas... we took this over from the Brits after WWII. We are the benchmark currency for trade, and one of the largest purchasers to population... besides other items. If the US doesn't show strength and leadership... everything started after WWII is gone and we become another Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mongolia, Great Britain, etc for the history books. Just some food for thought.

There's a good chance that the EMP from nuclear detonations would irrevocably fry almost all electronics, including the contents of whole data centres, immediately and before the diesel generators had even a chance to spin up. Even at long distances from the detonation, far from the effects of the fireball and blast. One of the expected attack scenarios for the beginning of a large-scale nuclear exchange is a high-altitude nuclear detonation that would fry almost all electronics within line of sight of the blast, greatly hampering any response. At the right altitude and with a sufficiently powerful blast, a single detonation could fry most of the electronics in the continental US, or in most of Western Europe.

Everyone who’s into bitcoin seems to think scarcity = value like 1 = 1. But the world doesn’t run off of limited edition star wars memorabilia now does it? Or Corvettes in rare colours. The second cybersecurity becomes an issue with AI, QC, or other - people will not want value stored as untraceable digital fiat for some terrorist entity/Russia to steal in a blink from across the planet. And they’ll go back to good old fashioned vaults of tangible stuff you can feel with your hands. Legendary bubble, but human history isn’t wrong, and wherever there’s immense value, the technology to take it becomes that much more desirable. If bitcoin hits a million, investment into quantum computing methods to crack wallets like nuts will increase in the same proportion. Crypto bros fail to realize this. Minus the whole EMP or localized internet as the world infrastructure crumbles due to war, climate, etc. Digital assets kind of suck when half the world is isolated or offline.

A lot of people will probably trash on me for this, but I think fixed supply is highly overrated. Reddit NFTs are minted with a fixed supply too, it doesn't mean they are really worth anything or will appreciate in value though. BTC having a fixed supply is an entirely artificial constraint which is a red herring imo. The value of something like BTC comes (ironically?) entirely from trust in the network in the sense of the greater fool theory that some future buyer will be willing to purchase or exchange the BTC at some higher price or for a good (like pizza, USD, etc). All currencies rely on basically nothing more than that same trust principle, but for USD it comes from the backing of the federal government and for BTC it really boils down to nothing more than that trust in the network with someone else coming along to buy it later on. That's it, the limited supply is just a featured used to market the currency, it still has no intrinsic worth by itself. Where people could get around the limited supply is simply by forking it like BCH (which is a bad example but still gives the basic idea) with a better feature or some other reason, that would split mining compute power, the user base, expand overall (not BTC) supply, etc. Also crypto has a fundamental weakness that gold and paper fiat does not, which is if the computer or network system goes down (Carrington event, aliens EMP us, whatever), then you're kinda stuck. Yeah that is unlikely, but people do not talk about it enough imo.

So much salt from people that didn’t buy crypto and are bummed it keeps going up. These easily refuted old arguments don’t work anymore, and if you consider yourself knowledgeable about finance, then they are a little embarrassing. Learn about cryptocurrency don’t speak personally I don’t speak on silver and precious metals because it’s not an area I have researched heavily. Bitcoin alone just passed Silver’s market cap. If you don’t understand public – private key, cryptography, and distributed ledger technology, you don’t understand crypto. If you don’t understand, mining, difficulty and proof of work networks versus proof of stake networks, then you really can’t speak on the difference, mining scarcity of precious metals or other assets. If you don’t know about layer twos, and ZK roll ups, or how many transactions per second the lightning network or an Ethereum layer too like arbitrary can do, then you don’t know about its use as a currency. If you haven’t thought about worst case scenarios for all stores of value, and you don’t know about a 51% attack in bitcoin or quantum proofing, digital currency or how a low atmosphere EMP attack could affect mining units and nodes, then you’re not really thinking about worst-case scenario. If you haven’t thought about what traditional stores value or Fiat will be worth in apocalypse scenarios, or how they have fared in their own crises in history like war, then you’re not actually thinking about comparing them to crypto. We know a ton about Fiat currency inherently from growing up in a society using it. We also as investors know a ton about equities and other assets. You may not know much about the commodities, market, or derivatives, but that doesn’t stop them from being worth trillions of dollars. Same with history, if you think of the history of of the US dollar, do you know that hundreds of banks had their own currency that could fluctuate wildly? Do you realize that the US dollar wasn’t particularly standardized until 1863 and 1913 respectively? Do you know about the history of the gold and silver standards? The more you learn about cryptocurrency, you will also learn more about other currencies like the US dollar. And most of us will learn how little we knew and see similarities and differences that result in both pros and cons for each. It’s fine to not know those things, that may lead you to make poor investments, missing cryptocurrency until you are forced to buy it later, but it’s OK—There are a ton of great investments and none of us know about. Because denouncing it basically because you don’t like the feel of it without understanding these basics is silly. Further, I think a lot of this doubt comes, unfortunately, from insidious forces. Governments and government entities that don’t like the immutability and unsensitive of cryptocurrency, which is understandable, if not beneficial, to an individual potentially owning one— but also on the more sinister side, the typical crony oligarchs of the financial world, trying to control the path and narrative. Blackrock using its corrupt tendrils of control to enforce SEC action on early innovators in the crypto space so it could buy time to get into the market, both in terms of ETF offering in custody and buying at lower prices, things like that where these forces know cryptocurrency is inevitable, but have individuals repeating their negative talking points without even knowing their service of these secret goals and actually understanding inevitability of cryptocurrency and bitcoin the whole time. To be clear, I’m not saying there aren’t criticisms of cryptocurrency, I’m just saying that these popular ones that people make without really learning or thinking about them are incorrect .

You just described every currency that has ever existed... bitcoin has the upper hand on fiat in that its production is not tied to any one individual or government. Trading is not regulated by banks who pretend to hold a bunch of it while actually holding enough to get them through a day. Its security is inherent in its blockchain encryption. You'll never be able to take my bitcoin, and i can put my coins wherever i want, whenever i want and there is no force on planet earth that can stop that (apart from a planet-sized EMP or a super sophisticated quantum computer that MIGHT eventually exist after we're all dead and buried). Don't believe me? Go look at how many times China has "banned" bitcoin with zero long-term effects its value. You keep your usd and euro and whatever else you have and let me know how it's going when those organizations in charge of its distribution inevitably fuck up and the value of those currencies goes to zero. When that happens, I'll lend you a few sats. To anyone paying attention, it's not speculation, it's an inevitability. The best would be a mix of different hedges. But bitcoin would be the most resilient. Lets say the entire earth was hit with an EMP. Everything would take years to get back to the way it was. Anything stored digitally and not protected would be wrecked. Bitcoin operates in a way that has copies of its blockchain/ledger in more than 18,000 different places. Some are protected from EMPs, and there is one in space on a satellite! Once the power is turned back on, the miners and nodes just have to reconnect and sync to the network and bitcoin would be back up and running. Bitcoin would absolutely be the first financial system up and running in a scenario like that.

I need to find some good pencil stock to buy. If we go to war with China over Taiwan, nukes are going to fly and the EMP bursts will wipe out all computers and cell phones. All that will be left is the Mark 1 Pencil and paper. I don't know what the kids will do, but us baby boomers will be right at home.

All it is going to take is one air burst nuke at the right height and yeild over Taiwan, producing an EMP burst and none of the chips (or other electronics) are going to work, even if China pulls back. Enough EMP bursts over major cities, which could happen if Russia, North Korea, Iran and other non-US friendly countries get into the dog pack frenzy if the US is busy with China, and nobody is going to have to worry about anything computer related for a very very long time. If the facilities are hardened against EMP (and it's never been tested on a wide scale) they may survive, but us home bodies with our portable, mobile and desktop devices can kiss them good bye, along with power, TV and cell coverage. When you have a large scale conflict like this would be, with enough nuke capable countries involved, somebody is going to let one fly... and if one flies, a bunch more are going to fly. It won't be pretty and the stock market will be the last of anyone's concern because only hard assets will be worth anything. There will be no winners in this if it happens. Hopefully the closest it will come is in a Hollywood movie and John Wick didn't really die. Although, he will probably need a bit of help.

Just 1 EMP and none of it will have value

Yes they are overpriced. However the gig is up, until they start colluding again! EVs are actually cheaper to make than ICE autos. In addition, CATL just cut their battery price in half! Batteries are 40% of cost. China has that $5k BYD Seagul that gets 120 miles in a charge. Probably subsidized, but whatever, charge $10k and it is a great commute car. It is by no means low quality. https://youtu.be/yi7BlJs2t5s?si=bsm9rtkJu5IRaEP2 European and American car manufacturers are shitting their pants now and the prices have been dropping. Also I heard CATL has a new 800km battery as well. ICEs are done. But we need to rebuild our electric infrastructure anyway, underground, EMP protect, so let’s just gear up for an eventuality.

At risk of war? So with the first attack when EMP and old fashion artillery will be combined you will loose everything?

yeah, imagine if they pair facial recognition software with uniform recognition and AI for self-flight they could crank out literally thousands of drones in a swarm. if they can just figure out the battery issue, they could literally have giant swarms like starlings, just patrolling and having a few peel off to destruct against any enemy combatant Jesus, that's scary. I feel like we'll see EMP technology return if that's the case though. we already have some great drone guns iirc

I agree on 650 SPY. But not a 60% drop mfker? 200 SPY would mean someone EMP'd the planet. But yea the general consensus I agree with.

It's much, MUCH, more complex than this oversimplification. China has a lot of stakes in Taiwan, for example in its chip-manufacturers right? Nuking that would be catastrophic for them as well. You know EMP isn't great for any factory, but especially not for semi-conductor. Also, a lot of Chinese civilians live and study and work in Taiwan and vice-versa. It's a very nuanced issue and the posturing China is doing is mostly towards countries like the US. In reality, they don't really mess with Taiwan too much.

There is SOME merit to it though, however improbable it may seem. The stuff you're trading in a brokerage account is literally just numbers on a screen querying a database in a data center somewhere. There are scenarios like a cyber attack or EMP which could potentially result in a loss of data/accounting records. If your entire net worth is tied up in numbers in a database then you could have your net worth wiped out. Real estate financed by debt may be more optimal in this regard since deed records are recorded locally..

So SBUX’s new circumcised CEO walks in the door, gets a $113 million work-from-home pay package, adds 20+billion to the market cap overnight, and this stock still isn’t pulling back because some Brazilion GHz two-years-from-sentience algorithm somewhere is cum-tributing it with some salty 1’s and 0’s. Hold the nukes Iran we need EMP’s on algo’s now

A whole lot of scenarios could tank NVDA for a long time. There is a good chance that China will flirt with blockading Taiwan after a manufactured controversy regarding some politicians statement in the next 2-5 years. I think Xi Xinping wants an invasion of Taiwan to be his legacy, but I hope his peers will talk him out of tanking China's economy even more. If Blackwell has persistent water-cooling leak issues, that could be a problem for many years. Blackwell yields could be much lower than expected, since joining chips is a new technology. A president could ban GPUs that are more powerful than a threshold out of fear of AI. Policy could be changed to tax cloud providers unless they use green energy, which I would support. Companies could hit the energy bottleneck, so I bought Dominion energy (since the largest server farm concetration is in Northern Virginia) and NEE to get a little bit of a dividend barbel. The Supreme Court could rule that LLMs are liable for copyright infringement and that all the AI companies owe tons of money to everyone else. At some point, the first globally damaging AI virus will hit and new laws will be passed. I think calling peaks and bottoms is a losing game and trying to predict a peak years out is even more of a losing game. But, if I had to guess, I think the peak will come when we see dot-com/last crypt0 bubble levels of hype in a lower interest rate environment. You'll see a ton of startup IPOs/SPACs with no earnings or plans for earnings that investors will lose a lot of money on. You will see ads pumping and shilling two-bit money-losing AI companies on TV while insiders sell the dominant portions of their stakes. NVDA's PE might go substantially north of 100, then LLM ASICs could be produced at scale. Then, my friends and relatives that ignored my advice to buy years ago will ask if now is a good time to make a big investment, and I'll know it's over and it's time to research boring stocks with stable dividends. A massive crash will happen, which will go way too far on the downside. Just randomly guessing, this is not a prediction, July 30th 2026 could be a peak, plus or minus a year. But, AI is here to stay until the next EMP and it will continue to improve. Modern transformers were created in June of 2017, GPT3 came out in November of 2022, commensurate with the start of NVDA's rally, things are still getting better. Cloud is still growing at all of the major providers. The AI spend is on GPUs and it can take 5-10 to get a return out of a GPU or cluster, so it isn't reasonable to expect returns on cloud compute to equal the expense right now.

If anything mentioned in the post happens your best play is stocking up a year of essentials and finding a bunker, closely followed by way OTM SPY puts, so in this fantasy scenario OP is still making the worst possible moves Especially the nukes, if Israel got nuked and the Samson Option got triggered, your Robinhood money wouldn't matter if the servers get EMP'd before you withdraw
