Interesting fact SB Energy is a subsidiary of SoftBank. SoftBank holds a massive stake in OpenAI. And lately they've been sweating pretty hard because they're burning through their capital. They even had to sell off big stakes in NVIDIA just to raise money for OpenAI. NVIDIA of all companies. So SoftBank has a huge interest in making sure nobody starts doubting whether this project is even feasible. Doubt about this project could easily spread to OpenAI itself and the massive investments SoftBank has made there. OpenAI needs to go public soon. And that IPO has to succeed. Otherwise SoftBank is in serious trouble. Another interesting fact: SB Energy has never built a data center before. Let alone one of this size. No one has ever built a 10GW data center. Even Oracle's mega projects don't come close to this scale yet. They're already running into delays and other issues. And that's despite Oracle actually having tons of experience building data centers. And then there's still that hundreds of billions backstop from NVIDIA on top of everything... This whole project really reeks of something rotten. The article probably should have dug into that a bit more.

The C$75.3M BAT convertible debenture wasn't repaid — on May 28 it converted at C$0.94. Share count went from 159.4M at year end to 270.5M at June 30. Total liabilities dropped $77.3M to $20.3M, and equity swung from a $2.0M deficit to $56.1M. That's where the "74% liability reduction" headline comes from. Nothing was paid down. A creditor became a shareholder. That's the part that moves the odds. A debtholder wants to be made whole and then leave. An equity holder that size needs an exit, and the cap table is now built for one. Two things I'd flag on the loss line before reading it as improvement. Net loss narrowed from $6.3M to $4.1M, but the release attributes part of that to a favorable fair-value change on financial instruments — the same debenture. And $(0.04) to $(0.02) per share is against roughly 70% more shares. Meanwhile revenue is $10.9M and California's SB 378 / AB 8 haven't landed yet on the \~10% of revenue they say is exposed.

I don’t really put too much thought into SB to be honest - maybe they share my sentiment 🤷🏻♂️ To be transparent: i work in the industry, have an engineering background and then worked in strategy consulting with extensive commercial DF experience. That said, I believe i have a pretty good feel for the market and understanding how “growth” works. Talked to some PE guys at modex who were looking into symbotic and asked them “can you please walk me through your thinking”? It didn’t make any sense..

The ESG liability angle is smart, but you're early. The market is still in 'growth at all costs' mode for AI. SB 253 and SEC disclosure requirements are real, but enforcement is years away. By the time anyone cares about Anthropic's environmental damage, the stock will have already tripled or crashed on other factors. If you're long-term, it's a risk to monitor. If you're trading the IPO pop, nobody's looking at this yet.
