NEM 3.0 will ensure no one gets solar panels in CA or any state that adopts that energy policy. They are shorting these solar companies because they are dying with no chance to rebound.

Han Chinese have always been gold bugs and their obsession with silver was an underlying cause of the Opium Wars. True. I opted to get in pre-catalyst on a Friday. SunPower is an industry leader. Do your DD but this isn't a company that needs to sell shares to pay for SEC fines, they don't make AI dildos, and they aren't an automaker who already had bankruptcy for failed EV in 2012 who just so happened to be failing and trying to sell another EV. I don't even think a pump is needed. I am cool with just holding the bag on this one. The shorts are just an opportunity to get in low. Worst case scenario, I sell it for quick gain when a catalyst hits and best case I hold until it gets back to $13. I think I will get MAXN as well next week. I think once AB 2619 reverses NEM 3.0, there will be a surge in stock prices from solar companies. And it looks like they are meeting on that topic on 4/17 1:30 PST. (Sorry for the random jargon. I did some DD and learned a law was put in place in April of 2023 in CA that negatively impacted the industry and solar panel owners. I was looking at the numbers and wondered why in the hell would the company that had been industry leader for 40 years suddenly become a loss leader in 2023.) https://fastdemocracy.com/bill-search/ca/2023-2024/bills/CAB00032093/

Buy miners. GOLD and NEM. NEM is going to challenge upper 40-45s as earning looms closer. Calls are relatively cheap and it looks like they’re waiting to pop off soon.

Yes I posted about the power companies here in Ca and NEM 3.0. If you ask any solar company, what their residential sales pipeline looks like in the state, they’ll tell you there is no pipeline. Fence sitters (like myself) all signed contracts prior to April 15 deadline to get grandfathered into NEM 2.0. Until the state or fed intervenes between PGE and consumers, it will be a bad day for solar. Too bad Pelosi, PG&E, Newsom are besties.

Ok your post is long and confusing but since I am one of the larger primary solar investors I’ll explain the enphase situation. I hold about 6k shares. Enphase revenue has dropped in the solar slowdown, but its increased its margins. Why? Solaredge used to have majority of the world’s marketshare but had horrible service, and dealers hated their products. Their US marketshare tumbled to around 4% in US and Enphase took over. Then enphase moved into the rest of the world and has been monopolizing the market. Even by lowering prices solaredge is unable to compete. Solaredge uses third parties to manufacture many of its products and its batteries are just repacked lg/samsung batteries that it took large orders for at zero margin and come as a loss. Its third party manufacturers on its own equipment had a volume structure element. At high volume they had lower price per unit and made a killing in the boom. When market fell off they were left with a huge backlog of product to unload and the new products its manufacturing are low volume, low margin so with opex its operating on margins of ~1-5% where enphase builds all its products in house is running on close to 60+% margins since it’s not dependent on volume. There is a huge battery boom going on for virtual power plants and because NEM and enphase and Tesla power wall dominate here and make decent margins though not sure how much. Enphase also has about $700b in buybacks left. When solar boom picks back up it’s going to be very different than last boom where it was a solaredge / enphase competition. Solaredge will really be a small market product whereas enphase will be the major monopoly. Think more Apple/htc over Apple/samsung. It will have some smaller competition on the inverter front with power wall3 having integrated inverter but the preference for all is enphase inverters with either enphase or powerwall battery. Anywhere buying now is great since enphase has large battery and commercial presence. Great buying opportunity here.

1 and #2 are mostly the same as they were. The biggest factor you’re missing is customer acquisition costs. They’re very high in the solar industry, usually 2X the cost of panels or more. #3 energy costs- yes it drives value in the alternative. Residential Solar isn’t a need, as it’s a redundant power on a homeowners roof. It’s a want that should save money. #4- NEM 3.0 is California only policy FYI. #5- This is the biggest driver. There’s a lag because companies procure materials for sales after sale but before install. Install timelines can easily be 1 to 2 quarters out. Also, solar financiers secure large tranches of financing. There may have been plenty of money in low interest rate buckets to fill up prior to rates rising. Higher cost of capital lowers the overall proceeds installers get from the system. That’s because they’re competing with electricity rates. Monthly payments to the homeowner must remain competitive/lower with the utility. There’s no elasticity in the price. If the homeowner needs to see a $100 payment and now $30 of that is eaten up by interest rates, then the installer has to lower prices, or not sell the system at all. This reduces the amount of other soft costs that can be baked in, you can’t pay for SG&A when there’s not meat

Not only are electric utilities regulated as everyone else has been discussing, they’re also beginning to see disruption from solar plus storage. Every customer who buys solar panels for their home or business is not only buying less electricity from the utility, they’re also shrinking the pool across which to share fixed costs. As solar + storage costs continue to fall, those who can afford to will try to opt out of paying electric utilities for service, which makes them raise rates on remaining customers to compensate, which gives even more customers incentive to flee. Also, over time as we transition to renewables, peak power will still be expensive, but off peak will likely trend towards zero cost due to over-supply. Look at California’s duck curve and resulting NEM 3.0 to see what’s coming. So, the regulatory angle isn’t just a profit cap… utilities will need to adjust their business models to survive, and regulators need to approve those changes before they can be implemented. Utilities are facing higher risks going forward, but without the possibility of higher rewards due to monopoly status.

I'm torn between calls and puts.. Enphase has a significantly better product than SolarEdge (I'm in the Solar industry). So while SEDG is dumping hard, I don't believe ENPH will get hit as badly. SEDG is also based in Israel (war) while ENPH is not. I'm not so much focused on earnings as much as guidance. ENPH is already expected to post a third of the revenue from the last ER, so there is a chance they will beat it. Also, laying off a handful of employees and closing 2 factories could actually have a positive impact on the guidance. SEDG on the other hand, is expecting an absolutely abysmal report which means that they too have a chance to beat and issue better than expected guidance. The bars have been set so low, there is a good possibly these companies beat expectations. Same for NOVA.. Since dealer fees have been plaguing the market, so many sales reps have been pushing NOVA leases where I would expect them to gain traction over traditional Solar lenders. But the industry has taken a hit and CA NEM 3.0 has caused a pretty large exodus of Sales reps toward other states where it is a harder sale because energy is cheaper (such as FL). There has also been a significant number of installers which are facing insolvency or closing their doors. I guess this is why buying options is gambling- could go either way lol

r/stocksSee Comment

Will be a disaster. Power companies are changing the game for solar. Look at PG&E in CA. The end of NEM 2.0 and implementation of 3.0 for anyone who in contract prior to April 16 2023. Solar became incredibly less attractive to the average homeowner. This coupled with interest rates…yikes.

As a general rule, I believe in the Efficient Market Hypothosis. That said, I believe there are times when specific markets get overbought or oversold. When emotion has become so one-sided that markets become irrational. I think these occurrences are short-lived and markets return to efficient pricing. If you can identify when a market has become inefficient, you can gain an advantage. I screen the market looking for large-cap stocks that are oversold in the short run. I look for stocks where the risk / reward ratio is skewed in my favor. Specifically, I'm looking for stocks that I believe will move solidly up during the next 20+ trading days. Today, Newmont Corp (symbol: NEM ) met my selection criteria. I post on Wall Street Bets just before the market opens.
