A put is an option contract granting someone elae ths right topurchase your shares at a particular price. So, hypotheically, if you thought VALE was overvalued, and owned 100 shares, you could sell a put expiring on 10/31at a strike of 11.50. This would currently get you .22 per share, or 22 dollars. In a week, if Vale is still above 11.50 a share (currently 11.54) your share would he sold at 11.50, netting you a total of 11.72 a share. If it had dropped below 11.50, you would keep the 0.22, and still own the shares. If you wanted to have less downside risk, you could instead sell the 11.00 strike for .08, netting you 11.58 a share, as long as it doesnt drop below 11.00.

Covered call funds can generate a good dividend. JEPI is the famous one but there's others too. Think they're at 8 or 9%.  Brazilian stocks are cheap. But there's some political risk. VALE pays around 10%. I'm in PAGS which does about 9%. Plus they do stock buybacks on top of that.  I've said before here why I think VZ is good and safe. Pays around 6.5%. Write covered calls on it and earn even more.  Or you could always do bonds. Though with inflation looking foreboding maybe I'd hold off on that.  I like MO. I don't like PEP.

"*Massive exclusions*" are aircraft, energy and OJ. How is VALE doing this morning? One of the biggest companies in Brazil if you're not familiar with them. Brazil got the worst tariffs of all countries out there. Its so bad that the admin knows it will get challenged in court. That's why their reasoning for the tariffs are different than other countries and have a different start date. You're out of your depth here.

r/stocksSee Comment

Just looked back at VALE's financials from Q1 2025 report a few weeks ago: Takeaways, everything still looks great except for a flat iron ore prices. Cost per ton continues to fall, capex is reduced. Some upside in copper prices helping out. If iron ore prices stay where they are for years, upside is modest; if they rise, upside is enormous. Big supply threat is Simandou, in rural Guinea: a project decades in the making, frequently interrupted by coups, arbitrary work stoppages, [frequent worker fatalities (13 officially since 2023)](https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/fatal-cost-rio-tintos-flagship-iron-ore-project-2025-03-12/). Historically big mining projects end up getting delayed substantially and are rarely ahead of schedule. More of a 2028-30 bear story I think.

Damn rough market. Earnings feels like a minefield. Can never predict which companies go up 20%, which go down 20%. My coal has been getting destroyed! At least VALE is doing pretty well for me. This is why I'm (overly) diversified. You might also see a big recovery in Europe now if war ends. Doesn't help how massively cheap it is. Corporations don't have any real values, they'll just pivot to what is acceptable in the moment (just look at the rightward-shift in the US corporate world). US giving up on Ukraine entirely + halting arms likely means a forced peace / loss of territory unless W. Europe grows a spine. Sanctions will get dropped. Multinationals will immediately start looking to re-open business in Russia ([not making this up](https://www.ft.com/content/7f3d6ab0-e6f2-4af1-95fb-dc3206ed931b), they already see the profit opportunity). Natural gas supply crunch in Europe subsides. But European defense spends will likely continue ramping up anyway. And finally a massive rebuild in Ukraine financed by Western companies. So short-term, that's a big positive catalyst for European markets. (No, I'm not thrilled with rotten politics / betrayals, just realistically looking at what markets will do)

For things that may go up potentially 20% or more in a year, yeah there's not really. There's not a clear long-term trend in play We may get a resumption of one. If that's the case these correction charts like ASML are going to start to look really good, applied materials, same story There's one really suspicious thing going on. So a lot of you are probably looking at the charts and thinking okay this is consolidation, there are growth slowdown scares that are going to show up in the narrative before long. But then we have VALE. That's raw iron ore, GDP squared. It's in an uptrend, at least it has been for weeks. That's suspicious We also don't have major money flowing to bonds at least not yet, TLT does look like it put in a low and I like it from a strategic perspective. If any of this tariff stuff goes sideways and we get a growth slowdown, you'll be glad you own some. The inflation would be temporary because it would give way to demand destruction and slower GDP, all the people getting fired is just a cherry on top This all does go to show why cost averaging the s&p 500 is such a good strategy. This is one of those times where trading is superbly difficult. This could be everything from Bitcoin? That chart is either a buying opportunity right now or breaking down. Which one is it? Guess right you make money. Previously I mentioned ASML and AMAT. I actually like amat about $10 lower just looking at charts but ASML, look at the weekly moving averages, look at the trend look at the correction, every time it has done this previously it's been a buying opportunity, good odds, good AI narrative, they have a monopoly on the best machinery. Anyway those are my random thoughts

Mining moves in bust and boom cycles, you primarily have to understand the cycles for each specific resource. And mining is generally a play for long term investors not wsb degens. Some of the companies here in your list are really struggling (e.g VALE, FNV, SAND) and are clearly undervalued, so you are buying the dip. But this could easily be a 5-10yr dip and they haven't hit the bottom yet

r/wallstreetbetsSee Comment

Completely disagree. One, I don't think you need to be a mining expert to read the balance sheets and follow management guidance, especially for companies that have been stewards to the shareholders like Barrick Gold/B2Gold and don't have a history of lying. Second, the margins are actually amazing. AISCs are quite low compared to the price of gold, typically under $1500 which is 50% margin given today's price. Even large scale non-gold miners like BHP and VALE are sitting at 20-30% operating margins even while the price of the metals are quite low.
