Depends on the token and it's block chain network. ETH is pricy, as is Bitcoin. Solana has low gas fees but it depends on how busy the network is at the time so if the charge is too much, try again later for a better deal. Just learn what network your tokens belong to and make sure you use the correct network to transfer. eg. Shiba Inu token is on the Ethereum network "ERC20" MEW token is on the Solana network and so on. Also get a popular wallet that's good for all round tokens. You may need a couple of wallets for the variety of tokens so some research the likes of coinbase, okx (if allowed in your country), kraken.

It's all pretty straight forward once you get a wallet - on the home screen you will see two 'tabs': one for L1 and one for L2. ​ All I had to do was send my crypto from MEW to the Loopring L1 wallet address. It arrives in the L1 area of the wallet. From there you can keep it on the L1 area, move it into the L2 area of the wallet, or can purchase other L1 tokens from the dApps (pancake/sushi swap). ​ I got my wallet before the free CounterFactual released (few days ago) where you should be able to send it directly to the L2 area of the wallet - but you'll have to check out their youtube channel for some videos as I didn't have the option at the time I did mine.

My current wallet is a ledger. Old ones are MEW (My Ether Wallet) which I've not touched since 2017.
Best security - Get hardware wallet like Nano ledger or Trezor. If you have spare pc/laptop - then offline wallets like MEW or other paper wallets. OR You can try Exodus wallet or Metamask extension. For mobiles, you can try Metamask or Trustwallet..
You might still be able to do MEW paper wallets, but fees will kill any use it would have as a gift. You're probably better off just designing a little card or graphic you can print and laminate, then help them set up a wallet on Xmas. Send them something easy and cheap to move like ALGO. Come to think of it, I'm surprised CB or Bitpay don't have a pre-paid option. That would definitely be a solid choice if it existed.

Ah I see what happened here. MEW also supports Polygon so move any Polygon assets if they're not stolen yet.
It didn't end up on MEW - So, I connected MEW to MetaMask. I thought that was Ethereum network only. From there, I opened up other networks - BNB, AVAX, etc, and thought that was different than the original MEW.

Well, I didn't realize it and didn't think MEW connected to BNB. I caught it and moved my ETH stuff immediately. But yes - highly stupid me.
I'm not sure - I got an email saying an Android logged into my Evernote. I immediately started moving stuff but didn't realize MEW was connected to BNB. I now have 2FA on Evernote too - didn't realize that was an option.
