EL calle the play this week?

Mentions:#EL

Moody's has always been late, so this is not that big of a deal. The issue is: * Moody's did a downgrade on credit of the US * Burry liquidated his portfolio (except EL?!) * In 2-3 weeks the big beautiful poster board comes out * In 8 weeks we will legitimately may have empty shelves and demand outpacing supply, raising prices, causing inflation * In 8 weeks ALSO the 90 day pause is up

Mentions:#EL

You're talking about the companies and I agree with your take on that but I'm talking about value. I don't have thoughts on EL turning it around but someone who feels confident they will would see value at this price since its near a historically low valuation as opposed to when it is near an ATH or fair price. With that in mind, I said ULTA and LVMH are not near lows or value prices to take advantage of the upside that could come with the lipstick effect. I agree that ULTA and Sephora are better companies and I own shares in both but not EL. However, Ulta was in value territory under 340, its at 410 right now so the lipstick effect would have less room to benefit ULTA when its already valued fairly. Sephora is also connected to LVMH which is not just makeup but a lot of high end fashion so you're not getting the direct relationship of makeup purchases in your gains. For Sephora in LVMH, if handbag sales go down and makeup sales go up you're back where you started and have less to gain from the lipstick effect when the stock is already fairly valued. EL, of the three, is in a spot where the stock is extremely depressed in price and has more room to go up than down compared to LVMH and Ulta. When I saw EL dip and Burry buy in last quarter I spoke to all my little cousins and their friends. To all of them elf, ulta, and sephora are the go to brands and EL is considered for older ladies.

100k of EL shares st worth 6.5 million. No where near all in. The value of what he sold there far exceeds that and I think he was sitting on a good amount of cash already.

Mentions:#EL

I'm neither bul nor ber, but Moody's timing of release was almost perfect. Natural bull run this week with our 🥭 out of the country. This could possibly be the start of the long, dreaded ber run. 1. Warren Buffet liquidated and announced retirement 2. The tariffs are expected to cost the average consumer about $2k more a year even if they are removed because companies have already begun to increase the cost of goods 3. Michael Burry liquidated everything except for $EL 4. S&P lowered in 2011, Finch lowered in August 2023, and Moody's, after hinting of a downgrade in November 2023, finally lowered in May 2025. 5. The tax bill is still being worked on, but it's supposedly going to add trillions in national debt in the next two years while the U.S. is at risk of defaulting in 2027. Last time, the 30-year was at this level was 2007. The bear market started on/around May 30, 2008 thru March 9, 2009. This means more big money is going to go back into bonds and out of the market, even with more money printed. Signs point to being in a long bear market. Follow history, not your emotions.

Mentions:#EL

Oh my gosh: * Burry sells all his stocks (except EL) * Mango says we are gonna issue tariffs as we can't negotiate with all the countries * US downgraded by Moodys * Bonds actually getting yippy * ~60 days till 90 day pause expires * Shelves may be more bare in July Yeah we are 8 weeks till disaster. SPY 615 before then, but then disaster.

What the Q1-2025 filing actually shows Scion’s 13-F now reports just seven line-items: one common-stock long and six long put positions. In portfolio-weight terms the puts dominate — roughly half the reported gross exposure is a bearish bet on NVIDIA, with smaller puts on Alibaba, PDD, JD .com and Trip.com. The lone equity long is about 200 k shares of Estée Lauder, equal to a mid-single-digit slice of the disclosed portfolio. How that mix lines up with Burry’s past style Burry has never hesitated to run a barbell: concentrated contrarian longs on one side, sizeable macro or single-name shorts on the other. Because 13-F rules force him to list the underlying share count of each put, the notional short side looks huge even though the cash at risk is only the option premium. In practical terms Scion is positioned so that a sharp sell-off in AI-heavy U.S. tech or Chinese consumer internet could deliver outsized gains while the downside on the long Estée Lauder stake is limited to a conventional equity drawdown. Why short AI leaders and Chinese e-commerce? – A narrative of over-ownership and extreme valuation around NVIDIA and the broader AI supply chain has been building; buying puts is a cheap way to express the view that expectations have outrun fundamentals. – The China-focused names could be a play on structural economic weakness, renewed tariff risk, or simply thin margins in hyper-competitive online retail. Using puts rather than outright shorts protects Scion if Beijing surprises with stimulus. Why keep Estée Lauder? The beauty group has been hammered by inventory missteps and China’s slowdown, but it still owns category-leading prestige brands. Burry appears to be betting that a new CEO + cost resets + eventual Asia travel recovery will reverse the earnings slide, letting the stock rerate from depressed multiples. In other words, EL is a self-help turnaround with cyclical upside that does not depend on the AI boom he is fading elsewhere. Net message of the portfolio Scion is waving a small red flag at crowded, momentum-driven growth stories while quietly backing a bruised consumer staple that few momentum traders care about right now. That combination would pay off if ① inflation and higher rates finally bite expensive tech ② China remains lacklustre and ③ discretionary but brand-loyal beauty demand stabilises. It is, in classic Burry fashion, an asymmetric wager: limited premium outlay for potentially explosive downside participation, balanced by a single high-conviction long that can work even in a rocky macro tape.

I’m not seeing anywhere that it says he made the sell off in March just during Q1? Genuinely asking what I’m missing here. If it was in March then yeah it’s worse off. If it was early in Q1 it’s not. And yeah EL specifically is definitely looking like a loser. But that also depends on how long he plans on holding that. It could still go back up.

Mentions:#EL

Read again. It’s in the second sentence. If he sold anytime in March. He’s worse off. For EL, it doesn’t matter when he bought. He is significantly worse than the market.

It's based off of 13F filings. Scion Asset Management, the hedge fund that Burry runs, files 13Fs to report holdings at the end of each quarter. Here is Scion Asset Management's 13F table filed in Feb 2025. It reports their positions held at the end of Q4, Dec 31st [https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1649339/000187920225000012/xslForm13F\_X02/infotable.xml](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1649339/000187920225000012/xslForm13F_X02/infotable.xml) Here is their 13F table filed yesterday, which reports positions held at the end of Q1, Mar 31st [https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1649339/000187920225000025/xslForm13F\_X02/infotable.xml](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1649339/000187920225000025/xslForm13F_X02/infotable.xml) By comparing the two 13F filings, you can see that he sold every stock he held on Dec 31. Except for Estee Lauder (NYSE: EL). End of Q4 Scion owned 100k shares. At the end of Q1 they owned 200k shares. They added 100k shares during Q1. They also bought puts in several companies during Q1, like Alibaba, Baidu, & NVIDIA. 13Fs are lagging indicators. Firms can wait up to 45 days after the end of a quarter to file the 13F. Yesterday was the 13F filing deadline for Q1. All we can tell is what they held at the end of the previous quarter. If we want to find out what moves they are making for the current quarter, we have to wait until they file the 13F for Q2. Which will likely be filed in August.

Highlighting some upcoming events in the short term people should be aware of: * In 2-3 weeks (early to mid July), Trump will announce tariffs on countries he has not been able to strike a deal with. This could be a "Liberation Day Part 2" type situation. * Burry just liquidated his entire portfolio except EL. He is very risk averse but always early. He has missed some upside in the past, like on AI, but he is great at getting out before big events * In 4-6 weeks (mid July to August), we can expect to see the results of tariffs on our supply. That could mean higher prices, some empty shelves, or worse! * Earnings will be in June, and by they may be spicy as tariffs are JUST starting to hit. I think the bull case is people bought more in preparation for tariffs. The bear case is guidance is so far off many companies miss big Overall, I'm unwinding my long positions, and in mid-late June, entering into calls on volatility (VIX), especially as the VIX starts to get lower and lower. VIX under 12 for me is liquidate all stock I own, and just buy SPY puts, 2-3 months out, semi-far OTM.
