Due to selling exclusively naked puts, I rarely force myself into a position--my recent "horrible" entry was in Jan with ADBE: held it for about 6 months before exiting with 50% gain (220P STO at $309; dropped to Low $190...yea....; on up swing BTC at $252). The math was still in my favor: 220P x 20% = $4,400 held in collateral which would earn $154 INT (SPAXX 3.5%) in 12mo or $77 in 6mo, but I realized $239 in 6mo. DDOG and EL feel like such random picks for a congressman's portfolio, almost like someone told him about a niche tech play and a legacy cosmetics stock in the same breath. The 45 day lag on these disclosures is a joke too, by the time we see it the move's already priced in.

I was wondering the same thing. I was thinking that maybe he doesn’t get out much and see how much more competition LULU has and at much cheaper price points. Or maybe he does, but only in the small, wealthy enclave in California he >!lives!< in and sees a lot of LULU and thinks it must still be popular. Then I also wonder why would he want to be so exposed and willing to die on a hill for a sector that is most affected by the imminent economic collapse he’s always talking about🤔 I used to take the guys word as gospel, primarily because of The Big Short, and thought he was a genius. But over the last few years I’ve actually learned how to value companies myself, and have done pretty well investing. And I’ve followed Michael’s picks along the way (EL, PYPL, ADBE, LULU, FISV, etc) and just never understood or saw the value in any of them fundamentally. I’ve come to believe that Burry is just a trader who heavily relies on a “reversion to the mean” strategy. He sees these once great companies dropping like a knife and just thinks that it must bounce at some point, and that’s when he exits. And now with his Substack he has a captive audience to help do that. But for pretty every stock besides for ADBE, it hasn’t worked out well at all.

Trust me, I have my fair share of stinkers. Take a look at $EL. Take a look at $PTON. Also had a HUGE position on Bojangles $BOJA (yea the southern fried chicken chain) before they were taken private. That one wasn't a stinker but it underperformed the market for sure.

Go look at the RSI for EL, CAG, and NOW from the start of this year and you will see that the first touch of 30 on the RSI can be far from bottom. It is a zone I like to consider for a reversal to the upside, but there needs to be other indicators validating that thesis. The support on ORCL probably won't stop it until around 140 down to the mid 130s. Not financial advice to buy hold or sell.

BWXT and GEV are not utilities and they're not defensives. You didn't say anything about the energy space in your OP. The pros of vanilla electrical utilities is: --they are basically guaranteed ROI by regulators -- the utilities sector over the long term has one of the most rock solid upward channels you will ever see The cons are: -- They are interest-rate sensitive. They are bond proxies, so when interest rates are high, their yields become somewhat less attractive compared to bonds. That's the time to buy them. It's pretty easy to time buys based on their charts. Bottom of the channel, buy. -- I bought SO and DUK specifically because of where they operate and their cozy relationships with regulators. That is somewhat coming under increased political risk for utilities in general. Their guaranteed ROIs may start to some under more pressure. Consumer staples don't have quite as dependable a channel but they are similarly affected by interest rates. The time to buy is when interest rates have been high for a while and everybody's thrown in the towel on staples. HRL personally I wouldn't touch, look at a long term chart, people just don't want to buy their shit anymore. Same with KHC. I dumped my PEP the other day because I was sick of it doing nothing forever. If you are looking at EL, I would look at ULTA. ULTA is more volatile. It tends to run before earnings and then sell off. If you watch it for a few quarters, you may get a feel for when to buy it. I would say it's more of a trader than a buy-and-hold. ULTA doesn't pay a div. I just put ULTA and EL on a 5 year chart and EL is horrible. Minus 73%. ULTA is only plus 34%. I think that's COVID after-effects of more people working at home. But I'd just avoid that space entirely.
I looked at these and DUK looks pretty appealing, though I think BWXT and GEV might be better plays than these more defensive energy stocks. I'm kinda new to the "defensive energy and consumer staples" space, so tell me if im totally off base. There is also the argument that utilities are a bit inflated right now as a result of AI growth and demand. Which is one reason HRL/EL looked appealing to me in the first place.
