I worked at JetBlue for years and whenever anyone asked me if investing in airlines was a good idea I’d tell them never to do it. All airlines either eventually merger or go bankrupt. Airline profits are non existent most years and even if you have a company that makes a bunch of good decisions which return value to investors, they end up taking it all back in later bad decisions (see LUV). If you want to invest in aviation and air travel invest in a company like airbus or Boeing. The airline business itself is probably one of the least investable industries around
Airline stocks ALK, LUV, RYAAY, UAL all have an upside between 20-40% once the oil starts flowing.
I'm loaded up on Southwest (LUV) puts for 27.5 for September. Caught a bunch for .80. It jumped on the news that there's no bailouts for the airlines. While it is facing high uncertainty since it pulled out of its fuel hedging program in 2025. They do have the largest fair value gap among airlines right now, but that's assuming their newly implemented business implementations work. Could easily go titas up.
LUV put was actually so obvious it shouldn't have worked

Recently bought tons of UCO, BNO and VIX calls and tons of SPY, AAL and LUV puts. That’s your salvation. NFA.
Rolling CVNA puts you mentioned in other threads have made me good money as I start to learn more of the patterns - thoughts on JET puts instead of LUV? Same sort of idea except international carriers should be more impacted by route cancellations and oil crisis - Korean Air, Lufthansa, etc. Southwest just domestic flights and has like 10billion cash on hand which is up there compared to other us airline balance sheets.
I remember LUV stock being particularly volatile in the past but haven’t traded it in a while.
I am confused by the airlines tbh. UAL and LUV have gotten gashed, DAL has taken a hit but recovered a lot of it, and AAL seems like a dead stock. I'm wondering if UAL might bounce similar to DAL or if DAL is looking at another leg down
#TLDR --- Ticker: SPY (with a side of LUV) Direction: Sideways / Coiling for a violent move Prognosis: "Cash is a position." Sit on your hands until VIX consistently closes below 25 or market breadth recovers above 25. Key Catalyst: April 6th (Trump's Iran deadline) Market MVP: Energy Sector (currently acting as Atlas and carrying the entire S&P 500 on its back) Whale Watch: Some madman yeeted $6M into out-of-the-money LUV $42.50 Calls expiring April 17.
man, sounds like you’re living that oil rollercoaster life lol. rolling USO is smart with those shortages on the horizon, could be a wild ride. trimming BNO after that insane swing? totally get it, that’s some PTSD-inducing action for sure. and yeah, LUV is kinda a mess right now. the extra fees and everything just makes me cringe. and carvana’s looking like a dumpster fire with those rates, good luck with those puts! keep an eye on the news; it’s all macro chaos out there. catching up on my popcorn while watching this play out! 🍿
Beauty is LUV doesn’t report earnings until April 22nd. All that matters is the perception their shares will free fall
I think LUV is pretty hedged on fuel costs. I think they were losing $ because fuel was low a few quarters ago.
Damn, that BNO rollercoaster sounds intense! I'm still learning options, but gotta keep those positions manageable. Good luck with the LUV puts, airline fees are def out of control lol.
Why such an ITM strike for the LUV. puts? Just in case mango tweets some bs to pump the markets to be safe?
Very few airlines are hedged anymore but they are offsetting this by charging increase ticket prices. I don’t know how well this is going to pay off long term. My guess is that you are short either JBLU or AAL. You got to realize that LUV,DAL,UAL cant fall that much further because that’s covid level territory
That's kind of nuts to me; the Southwest oil hedge was a big enough deal that they taught it to us in a bschool class I took way back. Hell, [it's even on their own website with the other corporate lore](https://southwest50.com/our-stories/the-southwest-jet-fuel-hedge-strategy/) Apparently it hasn't paid off in a while and the premiums were increasing: https://www.aerotime.aero/articles/southwest-airlines-drops-fuel-hedging-policy-to-cut-further-costs >According to a recent report published in the Wall Street Journal, the fuel hedging policy has become too costly to manage and hasn’t paid off for much of the past decade. “With the exception of a couple of positive years, it’s not been beneficial to the company for the past 10 to 15 years,” said Southwest’s Chief Executive Officer Bob Jordan at an investor conference held on March 11, 2025. “Hedging premiums have also gotten more expensive,” he added. HOWEVER: >According to the WSJ report, Southwest paid $157 million in fuel-hedging premium costs in 2024, a figure that was an increase of 30% over the previous year. As of December 31, 2024, fuel hedging covered a maximum of 47% of Southwest’s expected fuel requirement for 2025, according to its annual report, and **the company is still contracted under existing fuel hedging contracts until 2027.** Calls on LUV?
Puts on UAL/AAL/DAL/LUV, it's gonna take like 2 weeks tops before ICE shoots somebody at an airport
I LUV the dancing bears. So cute
what ever u guys do, please don't buy puts on USO or UCO, IV is too high because of high jet fuel cost regional airlines stocks are dumping so a good proxy trade is calls on regional airlines like $DAL or $LUV a few months out! thank me in a few months!
Rate my portfolio: $LUV $GHEY $BE $RR
So from my very limit knowledge I say calls on XOM,CVX and OXY cuz u know high oil price = higher profit for oil companies and puts on DAL,AAL,UAL and LUV cuz u know high oil prices = big loss on airlines cuz u know they need fuel to fly
Same I got burned on SPY calls last week while playing around learning to buy calls and puts. Expensive mistake. Made it back on VITL and LUV today.
#TLDR --- **Ticker:** LUV **Direction:** Down **Prognosis:** Buy Puts (Expiry > Late April) **Strategy:** McKinsey ruined the vibe **Field Research:** Planes half empty, passengers pissed
#TLDR --- **Ticker:** LUV **Direction:** Down **Prognosis:** Buy Dec 18 Puts ($30, $32.5, $40 Strikes) **DD Source:** "Field research" (OP flew 3 times and the plane was half empty) **Bear Thesis:** McKinsey ruined the vibes and now they are just a worse version of Delta.
Puts at open on the airliners due to the closure of El Paso? Surprised LUV hasn't taken a hit in premarket
I bought LUV @ $51 in 2021, it's finally in the black this week. Probably hold, it's on a roll now. I don't have a huge position.
I bought LUV @ $51 in 2021, it's finally in the black this week.
Why is LUV not on the table
RCL and LUV with the crazy gains today. Yup, people still got plenty of money. Calls all the way.
Fuck I was bullish on LUV but I didn’t pull the trigger, was free money
Markets in shambles, while LUV up 15% was not on my bingo card.
Anyone shorting LUV or is this just my shitty project?
Southwest boutta tax the Gravitationally attractive folks. Calls on LUV
LUV, I hope they figure it out.
Same activist raider that successfully won a fight against Southwest Airlines $LUV. Activist investors = SCUM.
And LUV just lowered guidance holy shit
LUV has shot up 20% in November. March puts are looking dirt cheap.
Same. I sold lots of covered calls (DIS, WMT, LUV, ARR, NYMT, too many to remember) and my 100 or 200 shares of NVDA got called away for $7 in 2018.
At a macro level, let me explain the thesis you seem to be missing: \> Economy gets fucked \> Consumers have less discretionary income \> Companies return on ad spend plummets \> META, GOOGL revenue plummets and first thing to go is CAPEX (read, GPU spend) \> NVIDIA revises forecasts down all of a sudden your forward P/Es don't look so reasonable. There's a reason FPE is forward and not realized, that's the threat Anyways, I'm not retarded enough to buy NVDA puts (COF, ALLY, MGM, LUV puts are very on the table though) but your prices are not extreme theory misses the primary threat vector
I do, I don’t just buy random stuff. I started with airlines during the COVID slump, and it’s paid off really well. My worst performer is Southwest (LUV) at -6.81% overall, best is Delta (DAL) at 163.12% and I’m averaging 53.58% return overall with just airlines. My best overall performer is GE Aviation (GE) with an 889.59% return, but I only have 2 shares (really wish I dumped into it more 😂). Aviation is my passion and I follow that industry the most even before investing, so that’s where I initially focused (including defense contractors etc). I’ve been diversifying more over the past 6mo, and I do research and look at industry trends. All small stuff, I don’t hold a lot so I made money but on a small deposit. Overall I’m at a 15.90% return over the entire portfolio lifetime. I’m also a holder, not a day trader, and I haven’t sold a stock yet.
Dems poised to torpedo CR. With no end in sight, busiest travel season fast approaching, and FAA reductions increasing 6%, 8%, 10% through Nov. 14, bearish on airlines: AAL, DAL, UAL, LUV, ALK, JBLU. ATM puts Jan. 16 anyone?
$26k in puts on AAL, ALK, JBLU, LUV and UAL. Not even Sully can stop the airline nosedive ... https://preview.redd.it/yk8gpl1ajozf1.png?width=2712&format=png&auto=webp&s=5a520c1a7b69a0b1f853a39fe896bbc1f9be9dfe
Puts on AAL, DAL, UAL, ALK, LUV, JBLU. 1,800 flight cancellations a day. The next two weeks are going to be spicy ... Thoughts on airline puts with 10% flow reductions (AAL. DAL. UAL. LUV. JBLU) dated Nov. 28/Jan. 16? Polymarket & r/ATC polls have odds of govt reopening week of Thanksgiving (24th) with Thanksgiving Day as hard stop.
Glad that my LUV puts, bought solely because of my frustrating flight, paid off
LUV puts because I'm flying Southwest right now and hate it. No phone or laptop charger, no screens, paid internet and shit snacks
LULU i freaking LUV you!! Haha to bad who didn’t listen to me few days back
LUV takes miles. LUV takes years
I don’t even know what would make me happy at this point. Oh I know! LUV to $33!
LUV takes miles. LUV takes years. Elliot management please stop the bleeding
LUV takes miles… LUV takes years…
Better how? IIRC, he does not invest in airlines. Airlines stocks have never been a good long term investment, except for LUV until COVID.
Strike price should always be set by price action - for covered calls I look to sell just above resistance. That way you’re letting the chart guide you instead of guessing targets. Coming to expected premiums to receive from the CCs as of 09/26: * **CCL** → IV30 46.53 | Put 2.81% / **Call 2.29%** | 3M Avg Historical: Put 2.37% / **Call 2.05%** * **ABNB** → IV30 31.91 | Put 1.71% / **Call 1.55%** | 3M Avg Historical: Put 1.98% / **Call 1.74%** * **LUV** → IV30 43.28 | Put 2.61% / **Call 2.09%** | 3M Avg Historical: Put 2.26% / **Call 1.81%** CCL and LUV offering higher premiums than their historical average on calls. Good time to sell.
Thank you - I feel set on a covered call target ($140) for ABNB and will likely just put in a CC order for CCL after I see the outcome of Monday's earnings. LUV is a small profit / just curious if more experienced traders feel LUV's better to keep longer-term.
I LUV how you think. A lot of Hares here and we the TORTOISES YES!
Or...hear me out....just pick stock tickers with silly names like CAKE, BUD, EAT, FIZZ, PZZA, BUNZ, TAP, LUV, HOG, FUN, WOOF. Then you can make phrases with your tickers like: I just LUV to EAT PZZA and CAKE, drink some BUD and then go TAP some BUNZ with my HOG while she WOOFs. See? Stocks can be fun!
the LUV will rise again
Starting next year LUV is going to require +size passengers to book 2 seats. The meltdowns are going to be fucking incredible. Future ain’t so dim.
Thank god we have UNIONS as a check on BAD CORPORATE AMERICA could you imagine if AA did not have UNIONS I hate airline stocks eESPECIALLY LUV
Soon: "Inflation is actually a great thing for stocks. I LUV INFLATION!"
I purchased 3 stocks during a market down turn during COVID. Known companies that simply had to bounce back. I did this as my first try into picking stocks. DIS, UL, LUV I've lost money on all of them. 🤣 It's the best thing to ever happen to me. Like a person losing at their first visit to a casino. They won't gamble again, and neither will I. It's all index funds now and forever. I refuse to sell these stocks. They are my reminders.
LETS PLAY A GAME 🤡 I warned you guys yesterday $hout out to the people who listened i hope you are full. prizes will be distributed.. Mr. Boom is very happy , we will resume gaming 08/04/25. Enjoy your weekend stay safe Drink Plenty of Water and get some rest -THE BEARS LUV HONEY 🍯- p.s FreQ
!banbet LUV 29.5 4 days
A friend told me about a new plant they're gonna build a in E Texas where they're gonna take wood scraps and make jet fuel (biorefinery) , LUV even signed a 20 year deal to buy their product.
I just hope the AAL incident distracts from the LUV incident
If you’re in on DNUT you gotta get some Southwest Airlines to match. LUV DNUTz
I'm feeling like LUV puts should be an easy decision given they are trying everything in their power to alienate their customers, but the billionaire investor class loves that shit so they'll probably shoot up on guidance about losing even more customers by introducing new fees and eliminating perks.
Ok, this one can go up as long as AAL and LUV go down.
just need time on it, lol i got LUV 27.5P Nov that is -30%
RCL, CCL, DAL, LUV… all traveling again.. no tariffs
I watch your channel and love your work! You have mentioned LUV many times and always have the same reasoning, margins mean reverting. But you never give a reason as to why they have declined and stayed down in the first place and what reasons you think they will return to pre-covid levels. Would like to hear your thoughts on that
Rollin down Superior Highway National Guard by my Side We were born to riot I LUV LA!
Buy stocks with clever ticker symbols. EAT, BARK, HOG, WOOF, ZAP, VROOM, FIZZ, GROW, NICE, WOW. It doesn’t matter what the companies do, it’s fun names. These are stock symbols I LUV.
The only reason they care is because they hold a bunch of LUV
Elliott Investment Management ruins all companies it gets into. RIP LUV.
A Southwest Airlines employee I know got offended when I booked my flight on another airline. You sold out to private equity and got rid of anything that made you different from your competition. Puts on LUV
Hi regards, I have calls on NVIDIA and Tesla… LUV looks like it keeps going up progressively
TSLA , NVDA, LUV, AAL. Say hello to my bottom bitches
I'm wondering if we might be seeing a little squeeeeeezie action on the airlines like JBLU and LUV? Particularly JBLU with \~20%+ short interest.
Cost of flights continues to drop. I'm going to buy some LUV puts leading up to their next ER. I mean they keep letting me rebook the same flight and giving me a credit each time lol. My round trip is now 50% less than when I first booked it two months ago.
Are they trying to blame Newark on Pete B? Bigly puts on air travel, the cost of flights is falling fast. I definitely buying puts for LUV earnings in July.
LUV and AAL both said travel is fkd and both have been pumping ever since. This market, smh 🤦♂️
I LUV U
Someone plz stop me from buying puts on LUV
Any one shorting LUV? Care to give me some info?
