I have had to say this same thing on so many finance discussion discords and forums. It's incredible how many people don't understand what's happening with SVB, yet have very **LOUD** opinions on it.
Total hashrate scales with technological advances, and isn't a direct measure of network security. The risk isn't hashrate dropping, it is the network condensing down to just a few profitable miners. When only a handful of people can mine profitably, we have single entities with massive power over the network (and risk of a 51% attack to end it all). Expecting people to turn their appliances and heating into full time miners is unfortunately not realistic. While you could heat your home with an ASIC, it is not cost effective or practical to do so. They are LOUD and would need to be fully replaced every 2yrs to keep up with tech advances. Resources are not infinite either, we just got out of a chip shortage. The cost of ASIC's needed to heat your home in a northern winter is likely more expensive than the home itself.

I think most people seriously underestimate how **LOUD** these things are, and how annoying it is to have that level of noise in one's living space 24/7. noise comes out the hole, too! better: submerge it in mineral oil or other inert liquid that can be pumped, rather than blown with noisy fans. pump it to a radiator and put a big, slow, *quiet* fan on that to get the heat into the air. the pump itself will be fairly quiet if you can dampen the vibrations.

First, regarding "creating the seed:" there are absolutely merits to creating your own seed from scratch. The main reason to consider doing so is that, otherwise, you are trusting whatever wallet software to be able to generate true randomness for you. Anyone with a background in computers and software will tell you that computers are not actually all that good at generating randomness. They literally cannot do it, so what they do instead is use a highly complex BUT DETERMINISTIC process to generate a pseudo-random outcome. Is that good enough for most people? Potentially. Is that good enough for you? That's another question entirely. As many people already stated, the key is to generate true randomness that you can trust. You can absolutely do that yourself using dice. That's both true and not true. It's true until you consider that you can add a passphrase. If you create a sufficiently strong passphrase (with as much entropy as a random 12 word seed, aka 128 bits), you could be very confident that your funds would be secure, even if someone knew your full 24 word seed. I have half a mind to create a brain wallet with passphrase, put 500,000 sats into the wallet, share both the seed and the wallet address, and demonstrate that a strong passphrase can secure even a compromised seed. Second, regarding "memorization:" I wouldn't let it be your only backup, but it is not all that difficult to memorize 24 random words. I think anyone, even those with a bad memory, could do it within a month with only "a few minutes a day" of practice. An example practice scheme: memorize one word a day. Read the seed to yourself every day (IN YOUR HEAD, NOT OUT LOUD), but only hold yourself accountable for 1 additional word a day. So, on day 1, you read the full seed, but you only need to remember "bitcoin." Then, the next day, you read the whole seed, but you only have to remember "bitcoin bitcoin." And so on.

Why move at all? Buy machines and have them hosted. The standard host will charge you 0.06$ for power you can probably only find 0.04$. Do you realize how LOUD these machines are? Do you need permits to operate a business for mining in residential area? Company in Alberta is facing a huge fine because someone 1km away complained about noise. Not saying you can't follow your dream but I would suggest have someone host the miners it's way less work and headaches.

I have been in bitcoin since 2014 and I am still hodling. I will not cash out for fiat however I do see myself actually USING the network to purchase things for myself. Till then, I am not EVER going to cash for fiat, and todays actions by Canadian government have made my resolve even stronger. I do not think this is fascism, I do think this is an over reaction of the government and the precedents set today can very well lead to similar totalitaristc governments such as the ones in Nazi Germany. I also agree with the general message of the truckers. I think that COVID has been used as a political tool and at this point the measures and mandates do not make sense from a science perspective. I do not believe that we are at this point in the pandemic saving any significant lives by keeping these measures and in fact I believe that we are harming more than saving. I believe people are loosing their jobs and lively hoods, addictions and overdoses are skyrocketing, the mental health and obesity is at its worst, the children that were young and needed to socialize in their early years will probably have lasting effects from this and the list goes on. I know that JP is a very controversial person, but in this interview he is very concise and the content is solid. I am scared that we are giving into fear and panic ( or the media is convincing people) to the point that we are allowing the governments to erode our rights and freedoms unnecessarily. I support the peaceful protests that truckers set out to do. I watched this turn from a fringe minority to an emergency act real quick. I have seen in real time the slandering from the media and fabrications while also being able to see live feeds that disprove the narratives. However, I also think that the truckers are in the wrong on two main points: 1. Blocking Borders 2. Honking I agreed with the message of the last years BLM protests BUT I was not a fan when they started rioting and looting, destroying public property etc. In the same way I am not in favour of truckers blocking the border, tanking the economy and encroaching on other peoples livelihoods by disturbing the supply chain. I do not think it is act of terrorism but I do not also agree with it. Even though I support the message and I think it was very effective to get the governments attention, doing it for such a prolonged time, they are not in the right there. The second, honking, it was funny at first. However, they are essentially harassing the residents from Ottawa for no reason. I can understand making noise for a bit during the day, but the truck horns are LOUD. Onto of that they were going to far by bringing train horns on the back of their pickups. That is just straight up unbearable and doing it 24/7 is just going to get people angry and rightfully so. With all this being said, I do not think they are at the level of disturbance as last years BLM protests. I do not think that this was justifiable to use the emergency act and this sets a horrible precedent for future bad actors to use it for any "emergency" they see fit. As others have pointed out, people are selfish. When they see their "enemies" or people they do not agree with politically be squeezed by the government they cheer and are happy, not realizing at all that they allow themselves to be exposed now to the same treatment in the future when they are having a non approved government opinion. Going after peoples money is evil. When the government is able to tell me what I can or cannot do with my money, I do not really have that money. They are just allowing me to have it at the moment, but only to be used for approved uses. That is not freedom. This should be a wake up call for people that we need a decentralized form of money that we do not rely on trust from anybody but the underlying mathematics. Today you may agree with the government and want to cut off the funding for the truckers and take their possessions. However, know that in the future this can then be used against you in the same way when you have an opinion that doesn't alight with the status quo.
To everyone else here who complains of electricity costs: Not everyone lives in a country where electricity costs are high and if your local fiat currency is garbage, then consider it a straight conversion from your local dollar to BTC. ASIC miners are LOUD though.

I don't totally disagree, OP. I think the "dip" is relative. If your coin dips but you're still above your average price per coin, you may not buy. If it really plunges below your average cost, then you may go hard. Everyone just gets excited when dips happen. (When you have 4 million people in the sub, many of whom are moon farming - like myself lol, it gets LOUD.) But everyone should / gets to decide for themselves when and what dips to buy.

You need to do more research before throwing your money into something you don't understand. There are mining calculator web sites you can use to project cost an revenue for any given miner at any set electricity rate. If your electric rate is low enough you may be able to make a small amount, a very small amount but keep a few things in mind: - old miners were sold off because they make almost nothing now, so that won't magically change for you, especially if you buy locally where the previous user had the same rates - the hash rate generally goes up pretty steeply over time so what you calculate you'll make now could easily be half as much by next year. The more the price rises the more hash rate gets pushed up due to new investment. - these machines are LOUD, so loud you cannot reasonably run them next to you and still live as you do now. If you live in a small apt then it will fill that with noise. I hop you don't like to watch TV, though I guess you can use noise cancelling headphones. - you need to recoup your capital costs before you get ahead because most likely there will near zero resale value eventually, unless you can find a sucker to buy the rig. - work out whether you'd be better buying Bitcoin now with the money vs. it slowly trickling in as it's mined over the next few years. There is risk that your machine will break down or other factors interfere with output.
