AMP comes to mind. One of the few coins that genuine seems useful on paper, it has a usecase to help with crypto transactions. Problem is, it never caught on. I think for two reasons. First, very few places accept Crypto as payment, so it is natural even fewer would be willing to use a little-known network to integrate into their crypto service. Second, most people don't want to use crypto as currency, but rather hold to sell for profit later. So, few users for AMP to do its thing with the Flexa network. Now combine both of them together and you get a minuscule amount of transactions in which a person wants to pay with crypto and the store accepting crypto also happens to use the Flexa Network. Good concept on paper, bad in practice.

Wildly untrue. Flexa does not need amp to survive where the main selling point of AMP was that it was an exclusive partner of flexa. When you go to sheetz/dunkin donuts/etc you’re using the flexa payment system with AMP as collateral. Not just using amp.

incorrect information. flexa can be used to buy / sell any product, all possible bc of AMP.

I hold AMP and if it's product ever becomes 1/10 of what it is set out to be it will be huge. There are consistent updates and they are active working on the financial legalities with each UD State. It is far from dead and one of the best projects and use cases.

Flexa can survive without amp. AMP cannot and is being outcompeted by other platforms associated with flexa. Flexa ≠ AMP

Huge merchants, thank you for asking. My frustration is with those that are saying amp is failed. The most bullish recent news is Hy-vee which actually States Flexa by name as an option to pay. On the POS! Guess what, there was no announcement of this or promo of it at all, which to us AMP maxis is part of the appeal. Someone was just shopping there and happened to see it on the POS. These types of smooth and quiet moves will have you all clamoring for a piece of the pie as soon as the evidence becomes quietly obvious. We in the community make a habit of using the prototype app at Dunkin’ Donuts, chipotle, bed Bath and beyond, Nordstrom rack, Ulta beauty, Barnes & Noble’s Regal Cinemas, and many more less popular yet dominant brands in the physical retail world. You don’t get these types of companies willing to TEST your prototype without something real that can really save them money.

I used to hold a ton of AMP. The simple issue is that projects like Stellar have made it irrelevant. Why use a crypto settlement service if you can settle the transaction in a few seconds?

AMP reminds me of a penny stock I bought into a few years ago. MLFB. Frank Murtha was going to give the world a spring football league and you could be there from the beginning to ride the wave. Couldn’t reveal too much cause NDA’s, but something “soon”. Always “soon” this with form xyz filed, and of course NDA’s. On and on it went, each new spring, no football league but with MLFB diluting investors for “very much needed expenses” until there was nothing left. Just like AMP, there were community members who became insiders with access to management. They would drop morsels here and there about interesting “soon” items that a certain member of management had said, same as with AMP. They must have been heavily invested and/or were paid shills because they became the loudest pro-management voices. Eventually those voices died down too and now all that is left is people posting about how much they lost and about potential lawsuits. Me? I lost $500 when I decided enough was enough and considered it money well spent on a few lessons learned. After, I did a few swing trades with MLFB and wound up making a little of that $500 back. I stopped swing trading it when it moved on me the wrong way and walked away completely. Bought AMP around the same time as MLFB. The fact that the dev team has gone radio silent is a huge red flag. Go look at the “soons” on the wallet integrations on the website, if you care.

Flexa is legit, but it basically functions like a prepaid crypto gift card. Personally, I much prefer the convenience of a rewards credit card. OP is asking about AMP. What exactly does that do for the AMP token? Amp is just temporary collateral for transactions. It's also given out as staking rewards, creating supply inflation. Its price has been falling since 2021, suggesting that there just isn't enough activity to sustain the price.

Mentions:#OP#AMP

I get why you say this. And you’re totally valid regarding the team’s semi-radio silence. But to say there isn’t any development is misleading. Flexa (the company that uses AMP as collateral) has been building quite a lot behind the scenes.

> can someone ELI5 to me how the privacy features of the lightning network work exactly? Bitcoin lightning transactions are onion routed. > what am i getting wrong here? That's not the way it works. Lightning allows users to take a single bitcoin transaction, and use it over a finite space of time, in order to shift bitcoin back and forth, with no or vanishingly small transaction fees, as pre-commitemment states between what are called 'lightning channels'. The actual transaction size will be the same as a normal transaction, with a flag that says it can only be committed to the blockchain at a specific time (or block depth). In effect, these lightning transactions are cryptographically signed iou's. The 'thousands' of back-and-forth iou changes are discarded every time a payment occurs (massive privacy dividend), and only the aggregated change is committed to the blockchain. This is the great thing about lightning. It is a single transaction with as many inputs and outputs (one/two) as defined in the original transaction. Only the transaction values change. Consider a channel link of this : John->Bob->Sally->Anne. Only the people next to each other in the chain have a 'channel open' with each other (John/Bob, Bob/Sally, Sally/Anne). Assuming each of the channels between all of the participants have adequate funds in order to achieve this, if John wanted to send 1btc to Anne. A transaction ledger would read : John->Bob channel : John -1btc, Bob +1btc Bob->Sally channel : Bob -1btc, Sally +1btc Sally->Anne channel : Sally -1btc, Anne +1btc. Anne now has 1btc more, and John has 1btc less, but the net effect in each channel is simply a modification to the distribution of bitcoin in that channel. Minus miniscule routing fees that is. Imagine this happening, back and forth, and extended to thousands, tens of thousands, and millions of people. As long as there's a path of channels between them, you use that path. You might even have your transaction split over multiple path (atomic multi-path payments or AMP). For links that don't have a path, you create a channel on-the-fly. All transactions are onion routed, so the only transaction you see is the one between you and the person you have a channel partnership with. You can't even see the channel of the person you're making a lightning transaction with. All you know is that it is either successful or unsuccesful. Each channel, therefore, only ends up with the same single input, and the same two outputs, just differing values. It's significantly more complex than that (transaction routing, and channel closure mechanics), but that's the idea. I wish I could remember the lightning dev that explained it (I'm pretty sure it was /u/cdecker). It really is very clever. I haven't actually questioned about the effect of having channels with multiple inputs (John/Sally) and outputs (Bob/Anne) at inception. Technically, I can't see any reason why this wouldn't be possible. Just a much weirder set of ramifications. (I'm pretty sure channel factories are a variation of this) I would suggest that the method for creating ln channels is most likely : Carol wants to pay Bob 0.5btc. She creates a ln channel with 1btc, of which Bob is allocated 0.5btc, and carol is allocated 0.5btc. Bob gets paid 0.5btc that is accessible once confirmed. Carol has 0.5btc that is now accessible once confirmed. That way the ln can be bootstrapped by existing txns. I'd also suggest that it would be easier to understand if Bob were Bob Inc. The incentive will be for the buyer to reduce txn fees. If Carol uses a store (coffee?) she will want to reduce paying those fees. So she creates a channel with 0.1btc and 0.001 is allocated to Bob Inc. For the coffee she buys today, coffee + txn fee. Ever more? Zippo txn fee. When your channel is almost zero, you buy bitcoin, it is delivered back to you by the rebalancing of that channel. And because it's Bob Inc the path through the channels from a source of bitcoin is reduced, maybe even two hops (exchangeA/exchangeB -> exchangeB/Bob Inc. -> Bob Inc./Carol). I wrote it [a few years ago](https://old.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/p2u0za/lightning_thursday_august_12_2021_explore_the/h8rauuz/) but I'm not sure it's changed that much since then. More added, but that's still the gist of it.
