There are many interpretations applied to this essence, knowing this essence will help you separate out the bs. - my interpretation is it's a distributed network that enables a trusted immutable ledger free of third party control and manipulation. - The ledger records amount at an address. The crypto key holder for that address is the only entity that can send an amount from that address to another address. - Read Mastering Bitcoin and Broken Money. What are your objectives for investing in bitcoin; for yourself, for your family, for society, as an fu against the manipulations of government? Whatever you choose is fine, just be clear. DCA is a fine investment strategy, but understand why you would might do this rather than follow it blindly, there are other investment strategies - each with their own risk/reward profile. - Study the historic price of bitcoin. I found [this chart](https://charts.bitbo.io/long-term-power-law/) most informative as an entry point. It looks at the price on log-log scales the data isn't changed just the perspective. It's not always possible to buy and sell when you want, particularly at peak prices. My interpretation is that there are two long-term price trends: 1) The historic price increases in a straight line on a log-log scale. There's no guarantee this will continue, but it has done this for the last 10 years. 2) The price departs from the log-log curve and reaches a peak once every four years. My belief is that this peak is related to the halving in some way - any theories on this are conjecture. Price action beyond the two above is unpredictable, it can be as big, but in the end the two above seem to dominate. DCA overcomes the market timing issue with lumpsum purchases. The information given provides some context to the timing issue. No one can give timing guarantees, but it's useful to know roughly when a bubble or excess demand is occurring.

My preferred investment strategy is based on the power-law work by G. Santostasi and HC burger. You can find articles on the web. Additionally Timothy F Peterson cites Metcalf's Law as a model. The outcome is similar to the power law, described from the pov of Metcalf. Overlaid on the power law are: Halving effects (bubble), manipulation ( eg FTX), major events (FTX collapse, ETF launch etc). The halving effect has a cyclic impact on the price (for me it's more like a series of impulse responses). If you buy at the wrong time it will take a while to get back in profit, so timing is important for a big amount. For example a bubble is likely between now and E/2025. Then the price should relax back to the power-law support line after the bubble 'Price R'. If the price you bought at it lower than Price R you should be in profit after the bubble. Otherwise it will take much longer to get back in profit. As always dyor and make your own mind.

HC Burger took my post on Reddit (the one I linked above) and popularized the model. He references my 2018 Reddit post but for some reason, everybody associates the model with him (even if clearly says it is a model he took from my post). Maybe the reference was not clear enough. I have been working on similar models since 2014. By the way it seems the famous Trolololo model on Bitcointalk is a similar model but he used confusing math so it was not clear it was also a power law (with quite off parameters given he was using much less data). My main contribution is to point out to anybody who wants to listen that there is something deep going on given power laws are very important in nature and man-made phenomena.

Is the the same or similar to the work by HC Burger? Either way ay this analysis is great because it is a mathematical projection based on data and not on wild opinion. My conjecture is that there are two predictable major-mechanisms and and one unpredictable major-mechanism. First is the power curve long term arbitrage against other assets - which suggest an e^x function (a power law). Second is that halving is an impulse response and only appears to be cyclic because of the algorithm triggering it periodically. I suspect this is better evaluated in linear time rather than log time. It's not clear to me yet whether the arbitrage effects should be removed first to get a better view of this effect. It's interesting to note the delay between the halving and the peak is roughly 18 months. Lastly are the peaks between between the halving and the 18mth peak. I cannot imagine a predictable mechanism for these, they seem to be the effect of manipulations.

The articles describe how the trend lines are derived for log-log space. However constants for the robust line are not given. Other items I notice are: - the relatively predictable delay between the halving and the peak - the peak price/robust price ratio is reducing - the +ve price slope prior looks to be roughly the same for each halving bubble when seen on a log-log view. - similarly the -ve price slope after each halving bubble looks the same on a log-log view. Your analysis shows how the halving bubble peak is reducing. Sadly I don't have the tools to this at the moment, but I would suggest (no idea if this would work): 1) produce a log-log price dataset and extract the coefficients for the robust trend line 2) Normalise (on a log-log view) - each cycle to start at the date of halving (as this is when the impulse response starts) - the price dataset to the robust trend line 3) Evaluate and predict - the reduction of halving bubble peaks for each cycle - the slope trend lines to reach each peak (I believe straight line slopes (on a log-log view) would be sufficient. 4) Modify the robust line to incorporate 3), still keeping the original robust line for normalisation. Any departure from this trend line beyond everyday fizz would suggest a major market move or manipulation or at least something worth looking in further detail. What do you think?

I like your approach, mainly because it's in the direction I was thinking about 😉 What I would like to see is a combination of this and the HC Burger approach. Rather than estimate a cycle average, find the robust trend line. That is discard 50% of the outliers to find the trend line on a log-log graph and use this as the normalisation factor. I believe the robust line is the base value of bitcoin and deviations show cycles, manipulation and events. The macro-market long-view can then be reduced to four mechanisms: long term arbitrage against other investment types, cycles, major manipulations and events like FTX.

For me the 'robust line' described by HC burger seems more useful than the mid line. As far as I know the coefficients for the robust weren't published. Using HC Burgers regression analysis, I estimate a 6 to 12% gain per month on my bitcoin holding until the end of 2024, and 16% pm after that to the next ath. Even though your credit card interest rate might be 2% pm, you should be way ahead. If you have the mindset of an investor/holdler, I’d go all in now whilst the price to still low ish. In this the "robust" line is interesting because it suggests that there is an underlying price of BTC (with minor volatility) over laid with bubbles driven by the impacts of halving. (Of course this assumes larger segments join the market each cycle and there's no guarantee they will react the same as history). I'd like to know the coefficients for this robust line. While no can know. [The HC Burger chart](https://buybitcoinworldwide.com/long-term-power-law/) can give an indication. The chart plots the price of BTC over the long term on log-log axis. Overlaid are straight guidelines; the price has never exceeded the top guideline and never gone lower than the bottom guideline. The guidelines afaik have not been redrawn since released by HC Burger. The guidelines are simply a projection of history, which everyone knows is not a prediction of the future. However for me it seems the most agnostic of predictions. The bottom guideline has now exceeded 20k, so very little chance you'll see it again. FYI I watched this graph daily when FTX went down, the price came to within a couple of weeks of breach the lower guideline but it never did. NB The middle guideline is the 50% line, i.e. the price is above the line for 50% of the time.

I expect few beginners started out following a procedure like this. It's a good list, but as a beginner I would do a few things differently at the beginning stage. Getting started can be quite daunting, this process might help get over some of the fears/unknowns, after you can revert to the list above. In your situation I would; - Open an account with one of the exchanges listed above - Work out how to transfer funds to that account - Transfer a small amount of money that you can test the process with. - Buy some BTC. Don't worry about leaving your BTC on the exchange for a while. Eventually you'll have to learn to keep your BTC safe. - Watch the price and other metrics. Once you have some BTC; you have something to keep safe, manage and nurture; you'll begin to feel all the ups and downs everyone else does; and you'll be more motivated to use the first list above. For investment, I recommend you search your preferred metric. [My preferred metric](https://charts.bitbo.io/long-term-power-law/) is by HC Burger. It's just some trend lines over historic data. Nothing can predict the future, but I gives me a sense of where things are going. I believe the natural price of BTC is close to the bottom red trend line. Any departure indicates a significant change in supply/demand or possible manipulation. So I believe it's a good time to buy now (but no need to rush in), the next price peak will be End/2025 with some possible interim action beginning 2025 due to manipulation.

Not just the last halving. A cyclic pattern started began start/2014, then start/2018, and start/2022. There has been some departures from anticipated curves notably the 2021 pump. [Looking at the HC Burger graph,](https://charts.bitbo.io/long-term-power-law/) it seems that in between the peaks the price follows along the lowest guideline for most of the four year cycle and any departure is an anomaly (major market movement). So for the most part little seems to happen. Given the recent anomalies, FTX, Russian Invasion and Inflation management, BTC seems to be doing very well.

As many have said "live your life first". If you are able to bridge the gap you may get the best return on your bitcoin, but not a good idea to gamble with critical funds. [Study this graph by HC Burger.](https://charts.bitbo.io/long-term-power-law/) Peak price seems to be roughly every four years; around Jan/2014, Jan/2018 and Jan/2022 (for this I am ignoring the "pump/bubble"in early 2021). These cycles seem to be synchronised with the BTC halving. What all this means is that you might miss the anticipated peak (~200k usd) around Jan/2026. If your lucky a pump/bubble might happen early 2025. This isn't financial advice as no one can predict the future. Although if you can find a way to bridge one year without putting yourself at risk, the opportunity of getting out on a high might be worth the effort.

I had a similar reaction to Moore's law. It's not really a law just a backward looking identification of a trend. At the time I was gobsmacked at the density of a 1Mb DRAM, never thought it could go on for more than a couple of generations (3 year cycles). Today 64Gb drams are available. I was foolish to underestimate human endeavour 40 years ago. HC Burger has plotted a trend. It's just a price trend, lines on a graph, a long term one. I prefer to use a trend the close to the lower boundary and ignore any departure from this as a possible bubble. Averaged over the long term the growth shows 36% per year. How long will this persist, who knows, but this situation does seem to have a parallel with Moore's law. It might be foolish to underestimate human endeavour and ignore it, it might be foolish to be caught in a bubble. What is your evidence that BTC is in a bubble today?

Some additional views for one-off purchases (assume much larger than a DCA amount) 1) Confirm for yourself that you believe BTC will grow long term and is therefore investable. \- I believe it is. Historically, fundamental innovations have taken ~ 50 years before full impact. BTC shows strong evidence that it will survive the early growth stage and has long growth ahead. 2) There are times when BTC is expensive and times when it is cheap; it all depends on the timescale considered. \- Days/Weeks/months- unpredictable \- Years/One BTC Cycle - some predictability \- Multiple BTC cycles - strong growth/some risk \[Assume all the well-known risk caveats have been stated\] [The HC Burger Trend Lines](https://buybitcoinworldwide.com/long-term-power-law/) mark the historic maximum, average, minimum lines of price and drawn them forward. For me these lines embody the sum of human BTC activity and what can happen if future growth is similar. They then can give an indication of whether the price is expensive or cheap. My own guide for the one-BTC-cycle timeframe: if the average line is 50% and the minimum line is 0%, then 25% is a reasonable baseline, higher is expensive, lower is cheap. This way you can judge the time to some extent. Today (July 2023) it seems to me that BTC is at good price in the cycle. In the long run, I believe it definitely is. 3) Check the transaction fees are not big 4) Investigate how you can store your BTC cheaply/securely offline. I believe you don't need a wallet to do this if that is expensive and that you can do it just on paper - sadly can't help with this.

Also, a node with SSD will initialize faster than a HDD. And also again, for day-to-day operation, a HDD is perfect. Ignore anybody who tells you a SSD is essential for a Bitcoin node But remember an external HDD connected through USB2 will fail to complete the node initialization, on any computer, Pi3 or desktop or server Alternative to Raspberry Pi https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-hc4/ These are well-priced, cheaper than current Pi prices. Also, the HC-4 has a native SATA port (other odroids have a USB-SATA bridge on the board). 500GB is too small for storage, unless you planning to run in pruned mode (stripping old blocks). 1TB should be enough for quite some years. It's \~525GB on my node with additional indexes enabled. You can run it on 2GB RAM, I do that on Odroid-HC1 ARM SBMC. It also runs personal email server, lnd, tor. I wish it had more ram though, but it works.

It's a single point price projection, it adds even less insight than previous regression insights. For me the best regression evaluation was done by HC Burger. And as others have pointed out the forecast accuracy dimishes with time. The rationale for the reducing rate of price increase is due the increasing amount of capital required. There is no convincing rationale for price reduction as far as I am aware, other than fear. I do not detect widespread fear other than the localised impact of FTX. So I believe BTC is in stasis until market confidence returns.

HC burger did a similar analysis. I prefer his interpretations. He simply tried to evaluate the maximum and minimum price on a given date and where the 50% line is. He theorised that increasing capital investment is required for price growth, in turn this slows the rate of price growth over time. However, each step increases the size of capital investment required and consequently, another new investment segment needs to be convinced of btc investment prospects - this isn't predictable. While the TA suggests a minimum price, I don't any support mechanism that would prevent the price breaching the lower price limit.

Interesting that we are close to the lower limit predicted by [HC Burger's price forecast.](https://buybitcoinworldwide.com/stats/long-term-power-law/). It's a projection based on historical price activity and you can find a more detailed explanation by HC burger in the web. It was created in 2019 I believe, to counter the outlandish predictions floating around at the time. The lower limit reaches today's price at the end of January 2023. Then the price must rise at a good rate to keep pace with the limit. If the limit is broken it means there is something happening unprecedented in Bitcoin's history.

re hw, perhaps have a look at Odroid, it is also ARM, low power consumption, especially model [HC4](https://www.hardkernel.com/shop/odroid-hc4/), which has 2 SATA connectors. So you can easily do RAID, less worries about TRIM support. Well, looks good on paper, but I have not tried it, I have RPi 4 4GB with Ubuntu and I compiled lnd.
