The debt is not important at all Imagine that you can do paint work, and the government borrow 1000 dollar from GOD (through FED) to pay you to paint a wall in white house. Later on you spend those 1000 dollars, eventually most of those dollars will make their way back to government after several payments (tax collected in each payment), then government pay back the dollar to GOD So from government point of view, a huge debt just means lots of economy activities will be driven by those debts. The money never leave the banking system, unless every one is hoarding and not spending their income, there is nothing to worry about
