Please educate yourself on how public-private key cryptography works. A public key is like a postbox/IBAN, while the secret private key works like a stamp which signs messages associated with the mailbox, and it can open the mailbox. Connecting to a web3 website is an operation which just lets the website know the postbox/account address. This is completely passive and harmless, and is the “Connect” action prompted by your wallet. Making any non-passive actions, such as approving some contract (e.g. Uniswap, or a hacker) to be able to spend your funds, requires a stamp/signature for this action to be made with your secret private key. Just like a deed needs to be signed to become effective. The UI prompt for these two operations looks similar due to Metamask’s questionable UI design. This is one of the reasons why it is A VERY GOOD IDEA to use a hardware wallet or at least a smartphone QR code scanning based wallet such as AirGap Vault. This way, your private key does NOT reside on your PC, it can not be stolen, and you can not accidentally use it to SIGN something that can harm you unless you plug in the hardware walley and click its signing button. Or you scan the QR code to be signed into AirGap wallet. Using a wallet such as Metamask with the seed on your PC is thus a very very very bad idea. Scam sites present the signing action as just some minor thing to do (you wrote “I just signed something above”) while it is in fact everything but. And since the secret key is on your PC in Metamask, it will happily do this harmful signing action. Performing a signing action === funds leaving your account, simple as that. Do not use Metamask, it forces you to keep a seed on PC. Rabby is a much better wallet extension. Get a hardware wallet or use airgap vault. Delete the seed from your PC and keep it in a hardware wallet or in airgap vault. Learn the difference on web3 between the actions of connecting (harmless, does not need private key) and signing (results in moving funds, needs private key).

I got you. Ledger: cheapest and easiest on ramp. It’s a classic cold storage device and is one of the longest standing and most reputable brands on the market. However, they had a lil hiccup this summer where they released this new program called ledger recover, where IF YOU SIGN UP, they release your keys in thirds to 3 separate companies who are supposedly trustworthy. They are also closed source, so you can’t verify if it’s malicious or not, it’s fully on trust. For these reasons I store no more than 10% and would recommend a TREZOR over ledger if I had to do it again. Bitbox02: Swiss made, newer company, but sleek device and the easiest user interface of all the options. I view them as a safer option because it is Swiss made (I may be biased). It is also open source so you can verify that its code is not malicious. It’s a little bit on the pricy side but it’s worth it. This is maybe my favorite wallet other than the coldcardmk4. The coldcard is immensely harder to use. Coldcardmk4: the coldcard is the safest of the bunch imo. However, the onramping is by far the most difficult. I have no coding background (I’m trying to learn), so the coldcard was daunting when I first got it and it sat in my closet for a month or two. Once I finally worked up the courage to set it up and put my assets on there, I immediately found it easier than I thought and I got my coins from exchange to a fully set up coldcard in under an hour. I now love my coldcard and it may be my favorite of the bunch. TDLR: coldcard is best if you want safety, bitbox02 has the easiest interface and is best for newer users, ledger is cheapest and easiest onramping, although would recommend trezor over the ledger if I had to do it again. Maybe I’ll buy one.

I feel like a lot of us have had stories like this how long the last decade...I know I do... because no matter how smart we thought it was at the time or how many people hyped it up early on.. the majority of people do not have disposable income. A lot of us aren't as tech savvy enough to have figured out/trusted sourcing bitcoin one way or another back when it was just coming to fruition and even years after that.. there was no trusted exchange really and $50/$100/$1000 is a lot of money to most to gamble with on something that the odds of it (at that time) really paying off are so bad! The ones who did invest money early on have cashed out and then bought back in probably a dozen times and I will bet not one ever thought that it would be worth this much and may be not be as big as it has gotten... (idk about the last one because there are still people out there who think bitcoin will reach 1mill each...) tbh anything is possible though! PS. I randomly had this thought 5min. That what if in and around 2015 if I actually put a lot of my money into bitcoin like I was thinking of possibly doing where would I be financially now and at what point where would I have sold... and then I hear an alert go off and it's this post.... such a weird coincidence.. Bitjava covers your points pretty well...but just to back up to some fundamentals. You are sending, actually requesting that the exchange send BTC to an address you control. They create the TX and they pay all TX fees (this is passed on to you) all you provide is the address. Later you want to send me BTC. I send you an address. You use that address and a TX creation software (commonly called a wallet, Electrum or Sparrow eg) to create the TX you also set a fee of that you are willing to pay for the transaction to be mined to the blockchain.....in order to execute there is a final step ...proof that you own/control the BTC involved in the TX....this proof is provided by the private key stored on your ColdCard...you SIGN the TX with your ColdCard and the transaction completes giving me (and my ColdCard) control of the BTC.....does this make sense?

This. I’ve been a Coinbase customer for 3 years now and have had great experiences. Even when I have an issues I email them and they resolve my issues within 1-3 business days. They aren’t the fastest, but they do get my stuff resolved. Try not to use a VPN this locks peoples account all the time. Do not send money to sketchy projects this also locks peoples account. Things like this is what people do not tell you since they have broken TOS from Coinbase that you SIGN when you accept using their platform. Even having the Coinbase card and going into a gun shop will lock your account. People just don’t read the TOS. Which is mind boggling if you invest money in a platform…

Crypto is not meant for solving world hunger and stuff. The original objective of cryptocurrency is decentralisation of an authority or a service. Whether it's banking or social media or carbon credits. Only tokens that are decentralising something are true to there objective. However over the years Crypto has found new meaning. It has provides utilities that fiat is simply too rigid to provide. Recently I came across SIGN token on the Waves blockchain that has decentralised digital signatures and authorisation for documents. Also while many Central banks are providing extremely low interest and sometimes even negative. All stablecoins are providing 4-5% return on liquid staking. Coinbase cards are also providing upto 4% rewards and cashbacks. Solswipe is offering even more for NFT holders. While new investments in Crypto will only come through fiat but I would rather keep my money in Crypto simply because its more profitable. History every new technology has to suffer mass criticism before mass adoption. Crypto is going through that phase right now.

It's a device like ledger, bitbox, jade, trezor, ... Etc. These devices do not store your Bitcoin, they store your keys so you can SIGN transactions. Your coins are always on the blockchain and cannot be stored anywhere else. It's probably just a preference but I prefer "signing device" over "hardware wallet."

Nothing. Nothing will happen if Ledger and Trezor are suddenly banned from existence. These devices exist to SIGN your bitcoin transactions. If they cease to exist, you'll need to find a different mechanism to sign your transactions. What changes with regard to your bitcoin stored on the blockchain? Nothing. Every bitcoin you bought, you still own on the blockchain. Any "wallet" (i.e. signing device or program) can access your bitcoin as long as you have your seed phrase.

That's most likely the cause. NFT minters are a known scam, and the real Louis Vuitton's NFT campaign ended ages ago. A website can make you sign a transaction, e.g. using [ETH_SIGN](https://slowmist.medium.com/slow-mist-blank-check-eth-sign-phishing-analysis-741115bd0b1f), to sign any transaction of their choosing with a specific account nonce, including sending ETH. It's like signing a one-time blank check. Since you haven't made any transactions on your account, your account nonce is still the same as before, and they can trigger the signed transaction at any time. Since we don't know how many transactions she signed, I would switch to a new account for safety.

Exactly. 15 minutes of due diligence on the company would have thrown up enough red flags that you wouldn't have done business with it. If anyone saw the interview with Forbes where SBF basically admitted his shitcoin and yield farming is a joke they would have left. If anyone saw Terry Duffy testify in front of congress in the spring they would have left FTX immediately. There were enough signs that it was a risky company that anyone could see. Not that it would necessarily fail, but it was risky. When I was looking for a new exchange it took me less that 15 minutes to determine it wasn't a company I wanted to be involved with. Simply comparing the FTX site and the US made it clear they "off shored" their risk. THAT IS A BAD SIGN.

In this case it looks like OP just signed this dangerous message. Metamask and brave browser wallet (and probably others too) show warning on these types of dangerous signatures! This site probably used this deprecated 'ETH_SIGN' method, that can basically do anything (in this case signing transaction). There's been some info that this method will be removed, but it's not yet. In my opinion, wallets should automatically prevent this already and maybe allow it only by enabling some expert option

The device holds the private key (equivalent to your 24 words) and it uses the private key to SIGN a transaction. What your PC gets from the Trezor is the “signature”. Signature is the proof that you have the private key, but signature is not the private key. The Private key never leaves the device (which is why you should never type your 24 words outside your trezor). And obviously the bitcoin is also not stored in your device, everyone’s coins are on the blockchain and you only MOVE yours from one blockchain address to another by signing a transaction.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SIGN ANYTHING TO RECEIVE MONEY. bitcoin is PUSH technology, not PULL tech like a credit card. If someone wants to send you a refund simply give them an address to send to. You do not need to sign, confirm or do anything to receive money. If they are asking for you to verify it is you, you can send them a penny from the original address you sent from to prove it is you. You still do not even need to do that. BLOCKCHAIN does not have refunds built in, its a one way transaction. You can only do RBF (replace by fee) to override the original transaction with a higher fee but you can not cancel it. If they are saying the the order did not go through, that is different then saying the money didn't go through. The money went through, now they need to send it back to whatever address YOU want them to send it to.

Bitcoin works on KEYS. You need to SIGN TRANSACTIONS to move Bitcoin. It doesn't matter if 99% of the people want to move someone's Bitcoin. A transaction without the correct signature is an INVALID transaction.

The fact that we're not going to get a real ETF any time soon. The fact that everybody thought all signs were up in November. And December. And so far, it's only crashed. The fact that no major companies are putting BTC on their balance sheets like everyone thought they would. Or the fact that this bull cycle is already longer than previous cycles. Do not buy Voyager. It is a complete pump and dump scam. There are only so few coins that are like this (VGX, OXT, SHIB etc). Voyager is so incredibly gimmicky, the bot trading algorithms are strong with the one. High volume and low liquidity with an extremely low liquidity score IS ALWAYS A BAD SIGN. Don’t FOMO into this shitcoin. I learned my lesson from OXT on how to read these venture capitalist funded pump and dump schemes. I have never bought VGX but I studied its price history and it’s clear that it’s a scam. You will have an entire year of stale to no activity and then a spontaneous massive spike for a day before it descends right back. I hate these projects.
