THE LEGENDARY DARK-WEB market for drugs known as the Silk Road was designed to be an anarchic underworld economy that evaded all government control. Instead, years after it was torn offline, it's proven to be the IRS’s gift that keeps on giving. On Monday, the US Department of Justice announced that a Georgia man named James Zhong has pleaded guilty to wire fraud nine years after stealing more than 50,000 bitcoins from the Silk Road. As part of his plea agreement, Zhong has forfeited that massive stash of bitcoins to the DOJ—a sum that, at the time of the coins' seizure in late 2021, would have been the biggest-ever Justice Department seizure not only of cryptocurrency but of currency of any kind. The bitcoins were ultimately found stored on what’s described in court records as a “single-board computer” hidden in a popcorn can, along with more than $600,000 in cash and precious metals, all held in a safe under the floorboards of a bathroom closet in Zhong’s home. The newly revealed case represents yet another notch in the belt for IRS Criminal Investigations, or IRS-CI, which over the past several years has used—very often in partnership with blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis—cryptocurrency tracing techniques that have led to record-breaking troves of ill-gotten bitcoins and to the alleged hackers and money launderers who amassed them. In fact, Zhong is the second Silk Road hacker to turn over a billion-dollar cache of coins to the IRS-CI, after another unnamed individual agreed the previous year to forfeit nearly 70,000 bitcoins he'd stolen from the drug market—a record-breaking, even larger collection of coins that was worth $1 billion at Bitcoin's lower exchange rate at the time. Both those records were again broken earlier this year by IRS-CI's case against two alleged money launderers in New York accused of pocketing $4.5 billion in cryptocurrency stolen from the Bitfinex exchange. "Thanks to state-of-the-art cryptocurrency tracing and good old-fashioned police work, law enforcement located and recovered this impressive cache of crime proceeds," wrote US Attorney Damian Williams, a prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, in a statement about the latest indictment and 10-figure seizure. "This case shows that we won’t stop following the money, no matter how expertly hidden, even to a circuit board in the bottom of a popcorn tin.” Underground safe containing stacks of United States currency and Bitcoin tokens. The affidavit describes how he registered a succession of accounts on the site with names like "thetormentor" and "dubba," deposited a sum of coins into the Bitcoin wallets for each account, and then made repeated withdrawals of the entire sums held there within a single second to multiply his money several times over. This apparently exploited a bug in the Silk Road that allowed those rapid-fire withdrawals without first confirming that the requested money still existed in a user's account. "In this fashion, [Zhong], using each of the fraud accounts, moved at least approximately 50,000 Bitcoin out of Silk Road in just a few days," reads the affidavit, which was signed by IRS-CI special agent Trevor McAleenan.

I wanted to test the waters with DeFi and Liquidity pools/farms. I converted and purchased LP tokens on MMFiance and Beefy. At the point of attempting to deposit my tokens into a vault (CRO/DARK CRO), the Beefy UI returned some RPC /script errors and I could not approve the transaction. I went to their public discord to explain my issue, during which I received DMs from four different users offering to help me. They were essentially telling me that because it was my first transaction as a new connected wallet, I had to run a synchronization/validation process with a 'trusted' 3rd party service to ensure my transactions could work. They all told me it would result in lower gas fees. Note there were 100s of warning signs during these Discord chats, but I was blind to them because I was desperate after hours of learning to make this LP experience just work. So I entered my seed phrase into one of these 3rd party (scammer) websites to run the validation/sync process for my wallet, which ultimately gave away my seed phrase and compromised my wallet for good. My LP tokens immediately disappeared and my the remaining CRO in my defi wallet was unstaked and is currently locked in its unbonding period. Somehow, I never came across the multitude of messages and warnings scattered everywhere saying (a) Scammers will DM you first, and (b) Don't share your phrase with anyone. Of course, after it happened and I opened official support pages and Telgrams chats, etc, the warnings were visible everywhere..... I'm sure in my head I knew I shouldn't have shared my phrase - I was even googling if it was normal to enter it for wallet validation/synchronisation while going through the process of getting scammed - but because I was rushed and never paused to wonder why these 4 DMers were being so helpful, I fell for it.

I mean MSHARE is a reasonable comparison when you think about what it does, right? Same total coin cap at 100k. DARK won't have as much hype around it as SVN because there won't be any launchpads using it as a buy in, but it being pegged to CRO makes it awesome to accumulate if you're a CRO fan. Long winding rant short, I'm bullish. Dark Crypto's TVL is still miniscule compared to MMF, but it's growing every day. Someone better at math could come set me straight, but I'm thinking eventually SKY could hit $6k-$7k at least and I'll be happy add to my DARK stack until then.

There are different ways of maintaining peg: - USDC is backed 1:1 by real dollars. You can sell your USDC to Circle, the issuing authority, in return for USD. - Overcollateralized stablecoins like DAI and MIM are backed by a bag of assets that's worth a little more than a dollar. They are indirectly backed 1:1 by real dollars. - Algorithmic stablecoins are the most complex, but come in different vareities. UST's peg is maintained by minting/burning LUNA. - Rebasing coins are a special kind of algorithmic stablecoin. Examples are TOMB, STATIC, DARK, etc. They maintain peg by having an elastic supply. Example: STATIC is pegged to BUSD. If its price goes to 0.7 BUSD, the amount of STATIC held by every wallet goes down until the value of each STATIC is 1 BUSD. My advice is to stay away from rebasing coins.

Can anybody point me to more info on how some coins are "pegged to" other coins, or even pegged to fiat? For example, I understand USDC is pegged to USD, but what makes the value stay there? And even more confusing to me is DARK pegged to CRO. Does that mean that the value of those two coins should be close in value? Any help understanding this is appreciated.
