You want a **short-term** treasury fund. >TIP (iShares TIPS Bond ETF) Crashed hard in 2008 because CPI cratered and Lehman was the largest holder of TIPS at the time and dumped them all to raise cash. Also took a beating in 2022 from the rate hikes because intermediate duration (6 years). Both of these things are visible on TIP's full chart (why do people not look at charts?). A **short-term** TIPS fund like VTIP/STIP will have less volatility. VTIP/STIP returns have been better than BSV (nominal treasuries + investment grade corporates) in recent years because higher inflation. >AGG (iShares Core US Aggregate Bond ETF) Not short-term. Treasury holdings will keep it stable tho. Longer duration treasury funds have "crisis alpha" -- they *rise* in value during deflationary shocks. See the performance of TLT or EDV during 2008, Covid, or even this past April for an example. But they are not short-term. Only put in money you don't need for a long time.

Here are quick one-handed tricks: 1. Wedge & twist: Put the jar upright in a drawer corner (or between two heavy objects) with a damp towel/non-slip mat around it. Press the jar into the corner and twist the lid. 2. Knee hold: Sit, clamp the jar between your knees/thighs for grip, then twist the lid. 3. Break the seal: Use a spoon/butter-knife TIP to gently pry up the lid’s edge until you hear a pop, then open (much easier). 4. Grip boost: Slip a thick rubber band or silicone jar gripper over the lid; better traction with less force. 5. Heat assist: Run just the metal lid under hot water for ~20–30 seconds, dry, then twist. Safety: avoid using teeth; if it’s glass, don’t bang hard—light taps only.

VOO and chill works if your only risk is market volatility, but not if the risk is political or currency instability. VOO = 100% U.S. large caps, so you’re fully tied to the U.S. economy and the dollar. If you actually want political-risk protection, diversification matters: - VOO (40%): U.S. growth core - VXUS (20%): global exposure outside the U.S. - GLDM / IAU (15%) – gold hedge - BIL / SHV (10%) – cash & liquidity - STIP / TIP (10%) – inflation-protected bonds - SCHD / JEPI (5%) – dividend income buffer That mix keeps upside exposure but cushions geopolitical shocks. Not financial advice, just risk management 101.

VT is definitely a solid one ETF solution, globally diversified, 60% US and 40% international, covers nearly 9,000 stocks, and yields around 2%. But for real political-risk protection, it’s still 100% equity exposure. If the goal is to hedge instability, I’d still mix VT with: GLDM or IAU: inflation & crisis hedge BIL or SHV: cash-like stability STIP or TIP: inflation-protected bonds SCHD or JEPI: dividend income & lower volatility So maybe 60% VT + 40% hedges for a balance between growth and protection. Not financial advice, just fundamentals talking.

TIP Bonds guarantee you will ALWAYS forever be ahead of inflation. Over 30 years, you win by about 34%. Doesn't seem like much, but compare that to what your position is.

Totally hear you, i’ve been trading for seven years, using probability and statistics like IVR or expected move, etc., And 7 years ago not long after when I switched to that Is when I was able to replace my salary at my job because of the higher probability in advantages of some of these strategies. I haven’t met one but to the people who trade full time by just buying calls my hat is off to you, because that’s very hard to be profitable with. but spreads don’t require a big move if you use them for the right job. Debit verticals are for momentum, you buy a small width and let delta do the work, you only need the stock to lean your way and you take 25 to 50 percent and recycle. Credit verticals are for chop or mean reversion, short strike near 0.30 to 0.40 delta, you win with small favorable moves, with time decay, and often even if price drifts a bit against you. With selling premium you can be wrong on direction and still make money. Like when your 4DTE call loses value even though the stock was up- the guy who sold that contract is collecting credit. The Key is liquidity and structure, stick to tight bid ask names, keep widths sensible, manage early stc. Most professional options traders are selling premium because theta and modest IV contraction help them, and the flexibility some of these strategies can give you. that is why in my personal opinion defined risk spreads are a better intraday tool than naked calls or puts for consistency. But this is just purely my opinion as a random trader on Reddit, people obviously make money buying options, in my opinion it’s just harder. ***TIP- The delta of the option your buying is “roughly” the POP (probability of profit) of your trade. So if you buy a 0.43 delta call, your call has a “roughly” 40-46% chance of making 1 penny or more on your trade***

It's great when you can find a business inflecting like that. HWKN was in process when I bought it. Really good margins in their water business didn't show in the overall numbers yet, but as it grew in size eventually the whole company looked better and the market reacted. Nothing wrong with broad index investing except it’s usually relatively boring (which is a good thing). Think about 15%-20% of the time it can be exciting .. either good or bad; being a human endeavor at least some “social psychology” drama to be expected. That said some investors and especially speculators are far more competitive but I also remember watching some of Buffett’s and Munger’s videotaped musings … about not being very impressed with more [other] professional money managers. People who do this full-time. Not saying mirroring Berkshire is the way forward as they themselves change with the times, but many will fall short = may as well go with an index unless doing something combining investments with taxes, hedging corporate concerns, etc.., There’s also asset allocation with investor age to consider (like adding bonds but a bit of non-US too). If keeping the uncomplicated theme, Vanguard’s “life strategy” 4-index fund asset allocations (2 stocks, 2 bonds) seem relatively simple with a 5^th (TIP) fund only added to the fund coming due. Will actually be replicating that with iShares mostly fwiw except with BNDX.

Over long term, stocks and real estate offsets inflation. TIP security benefits when inflation rises. For now, I think any significant inflation jump will be short lived as economy likely will slow down, thus softening demand for goods. If you want to trade or hedge this thing short term, any kind of hedge will may lose money if inflation turns out to be short lived. So are you actually trying to hedge something? Like are you assuming stocks are going to tank initially when inflation spikes? If so, buying put spreads on stocks or reducing your equity exposure….

My wife and I recently moved to managing our own, actually still in the process of moving everything (got lucky and moved everything to cash about 2 weeks ago, so just slowly buying stuff now). I would suggest a more diversified portfolio. BND, TIP are both good safer hedges, mix in some more tech heavy EFTs just in case you are wrong. We went with 10 EFTs for now and weighed about 65% growth centric. It's also not the worst idea to put in some safer stocks or ones with higher dividends. That said, you could be just fine with VT, but know that your recovery period in a downturn could be longer and you are exposed to more risk.

You're smart to prioritize safety and preservation in this market! Your current strategy is a good starting point, but we can refine it. Here's what I'd consider : 1-Re-evaluate SGOV Allocation: While SGOV offers a decent 4.2% return, consider diversifying a portion into short-term corporate bond ETFs like VCSH or IGIB for potentially higher yields with relatively low risk. 2- Add Inflation Protection: With your focus on preservation, consider adding inflation-protected securities like TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities) through ETFs like TIP or SCHP. 3- Review ETF Overlap: Your current ETF selection has some overlap, particularly in the US large-cap and dividend space. Streamline your holdings to avoid overexposure to specific sectors or factors. 4- Maintain Cash Position: Given your preference for safety and potential market volatility, maintaining a significant cash position is wise

I ran your portfolio through an optimizer, and here’s how you can improve returns while reducing risk, without selling anything. Just adjust your $18k/month contributions: 1. Reduce new investments in VOO (63.3%) and VTI (12.1%) – You already have a lot in these, and the optimizer suggests better risk-adjusted options. 2. Increase NDAQ (\~33%) and VUG (\~31%) – These have historically outperformed and improve your Sharpe ratio from 0.76 to 0.88, meaning better returns for the same risk. 3. Allocate more to TIP (\~35%) – Helps hedge against inflation and lowers portfolio volatility from 22.2% to 16.1%, making your portfolio more stable. 4. Keep a small stake in VTV (\~5%) – Provides balance against growth-heavy holdings. 5. TQQQ (\~3%) – Super high risk; the optimizer doesn’t favor it, but if you like the upside, keep it small. These adjustments increase efficiency without needing to sell anything. If you want, you can tweak the optimizer yourself to see different scenarios: [https://portfoliometrics.net/shared/b7e24cdc-ad7c-4e48-b5b2-48af8b6658e6](https://portfoliometrics.net/shared/b7e24cdc-ad7c-4e48-b5b2-48af8b6658e6)

I jumped in too quickly as well, knowing zero about stock or options but forced to learn after events I will not bore you with. And I had learned a lot off OPs list—and felt I needed to ‘feel the game’. Understanding options required me to rewrite my brain. It’s like (I imagine) a baby’s brain watching someone flip a light switch and say ‘off/on’ and the baby is like ‘dude you just told me that was up/down’! NEWBE TIP: Use ChatGPT (I pay $20/mo for the OpenAI app) for all of your really stupid questions you think are smart and insightful. Chad (named my Chad) patiently tries to explain to you why up and down is also off and on and why up is down and down is up and there is no other guy on the other side of this bet who’s gonna owe you stock or you’re gonna owe him stocks— and how in God‘s green earth can you saw 100 shares you don’t own?? Lol. Not being a numbers guy, I intuitively resented the Delta and the gamma and the Vega and the Theta, and even wind to chat that these were just made up things by mathematicians who just can’t accept reality unless they’ve put a formula to it. Like the wave function argument I had with chat several months ago. And until I could create a metaphor or an analogy to each of the Greeks, but especially Theta— I pretended that the Greeks didn’t matter. In fact, I would just take screenshots of an option and tell ChatGPT to tell me what am I getting into? (Make sure to turn off the Donald Trump mode, so ChatGPT can tell you things it knows you don’t wanna hear). After a very long discussion with ChatGPT, where it refused to agree with me that the Greeks were dumb , I finally understood time decay by crafting a metaphors with chat that worked for me (cuz I respect numbers guys but I’m not one of them; everything needs to have a narrative for me.) My first option was a covered call and as soon as the order was filled, I panicked asked to remind me again how the little buttons work and bought to close and actually made $50. And that is probably my most successful option story If you buy to open when you’re supposed to sell the close, your trouble just doubled 🤣

Scratch that, actually, you should instead go to the new burger joint in town. You know, the one with the faded brick building that used to be an auto body shop 25 years ago? Started up by two guys with no restaurant experience and a crazy idea? Then, when they spin the iPad around, make sure to wait until they are looking directly at you and click “NO TIP”. You’ve earned it

Steps to a happy life int he market 1. buy a stock you like at a "good price" or a "good value" (it is relative) 2. pick a price that you can sell it that it makes you happy and set a limit sell order like OP did. It doesn't matter if you hit the absolute TIP TOP of the mountain. It if enough to make you comfortable with the decision and you make some money. Lather rinse and repeat.

What do you mean by short/long position? Can you elaborate on what you are trying to do? There are treasury instruments like TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities - [https://www.treasurydirect.gov/marketable-securities/tips/](https://www.treasurydirect.gov/marketable-securities/tips/) ) These are marketable securities that you can trade. There are also ETFs which are optionable like TIP - [https://www.ishares.com/us/products/239467/ishares-tips-bond-etf](https://www.ishares.com/us/products/239467/ishares-tips-bond-etf)

I’m going to preface with some baseline assumption 1. your nest egg is enough to maintain your desired standards of living. 2. Your risk tolerance is the let’s say same as average people. Your target goal is to slowly drawdown your nest egg and maintain the purchasing power. - can’t go too safe like all fixed income or fixed annuities or inflation will just eat you alive - can’t take a lot of risk either since regardless of market condition, you still need to take withdrawals and you don’t have the condition to recover well. Inflation: a few things to consider for inflations. - TIPS adjust principal with inflation - equities does hedge somewhat against inflations So how much allocation? I think 70/30 is OK for the few years but 60/40 maybe safer. I think as long as it’s over 50 it should be OK I’ll go with 6/4 - - Bond - 20 AGG broad bond index - 10 TIP just the tips - 10 maybe a corporate bond? Like VCLT? Or just another 10 on TIP - equity: broad base diversification. Diversifying beyond just US equities. Goal is to take only market risk…world market. - 35 VTI - US all cap so more than SP500 - 25 VEU - world ex-US

I didn't say you were advocating for 100% stocks. I was giving reasons why someone might want to add a small portion of gold to their portfolio. Not claiming TIPS are bad, but they are much more highly correlated to stocks vs. gold over long term and especially last 5 years. VTI TIP correlation is 0.7 in past 5 years vs VTI GLD correlation of 0.2.

These instructions are for the trader workstation. Type a symbol, hit enter, select: COMBINATIONS OPTION COMBO (SMART) For standard orders like basic spreads, you can use the STRATEGY icon in the middle. For this order you'll need (PAIR or LEG BY LEG) Enter the stock symbol. When you hit ENTER, a menu will open. Select OPTIONS. That will open the option chain screen. If you don't see the options that you want, in the upper right hand corner you can open MONTHS or STRIKES to add options to the chain. Once done, you can click on the 4 options on the chain that you want. Make sure to click on the bid for those you're selling the ask for those that you are buying. Now you have to go back to the order screen where all four options will be listed with the default of one contract each. If you wanted to change that you can increase it to any number of contracts that you want. Make sure that you check that the first column (ACTION) matches your intentions. If not, change BUY to SELL or vice versa. If you have succeeded in getting this far, click OK and your order will be on your TWS order page. Yes, this is all a bit cumbersome. TIP: Whenever you make a lot of changes to your listed securities, periodically save the layout. IBKR is all good about saving these for normal operation but if you have a hard boot (power failure), they're lost.
