The only difference in returns between TIPs and Treasuries of the same maturity (besides tax stuff) is that with TIPs you lock in your expected inflation over the maturity of the TIP (and pay a very slight premium for that luxury) whereas with the Treasury you get each year's actual inflation.

When I last checked Schwab's Treasury MMFs were yielding less than SWVXX. I'd save state taxes with SNSXX but the tax savings didn't make up the yield difference. SGOV and USFR are ETFs that invest in ultra short term government bonds. SGOV invests in 0-3 month Treasury Bonds and USFR invests in Floating Rate US Treasuries. There are several other ETFs that invest in ultra short term Gov't bonds that are equivalent. I actually have a bit of SWVXX but most of my uninvested cash is in USFR. I haven't checked recently but when I last checked it was yielding slightly more then SWVXX and is state income tax free. The key is they invest in ultra short term securities so you don't have the same interest rate risk you have when investing in longer term bonds. A Money Market Fund keeps a constant share price of $1, orders execute every night and you get paid interest monthly. A Treasury ETF trades like a stock. It has the same limitations of other ETFs at Schwab, no Fractional shares. USFR's share price hovers around $50 and SGOV around $100 so if your dealing with small amounts of cash that can be a pain. If you look at a price graph you'll see they make a nice sawtooth pattern. That's because they slowly increase in price throughout the month as they accumulate interest then drop when the interest is distributed. All of these are fine options and are easy to switch between. You mentioned iBonds and TIPS. You can only buy iBonds directly at Treasury Direct. You can buy TIPS at Schwab, either directly, via a Mutual Fund (SWRSX), or via numerous ETFs (SCHP, TIP, etc). Schwab has other options for cash as well, T-Bills, CDs, etc.... I dabbled with T-Bills for a bit but it was more effort then it was worth and just started buying the ETFs instead. The convenience was worth the minor cost to me.

Definitely hard sell, and hard to get your money back. But it you put some time and effort into learning their methods you might get it back. Its more for daytraders than for swing trading even though they do supposedly have a SwingTrade AI feature. This is not a good site or deal for beginers who are buy-and-hold types. Save your money and just buy the 40% $SPY 40% $QQQ 20% $TIP etf portfolio. I admit it, I fell for the marketing, and didnt have the time to make it work.

It was a real ride but very educational. NVDA had the best quarter they've ever had, maybe better than anybody has ever had, and the market finished down on high volume. Look at TIP, TLT, PG, and KO, though-- they were slightly up as big tech got smashed. Treasuries and boring dividend payers. This market wants to go down.

r/investingSee Comment

Well, the market is saying both are equal. Now, I wouldn't buy either, but the market is saying that a TIP with a 2.375% coupon and a YTM of 4.89 and a regular treasury (both 2/15/2055) with a 4.625% coupon and a 4.76% YTM are equal in economic value. Yes, the TIP gets an inflation bump, but the traditional pays a higher coupon NOW, so that is the reason.

You want a **short-term** treasury fund. >TIP (iShares TIPS Bond ETF) Crashed hard in 2008 because CPI cratered and Lehman was the largest holder of TIPS at the time and dumped them all to raise cash. Also took a beating in 2022 from the rate hikes because intermediate duration (6 years). Both of these things are visible on TIP's full chart (why do people not look at charts?). A **short-term** TIPS fund like VTIP/STIP will have less volatility. VTIP/STIP returns have been better than BSV (nominal treasuries + investment grade corporates) in recent years because higher inflation. >AGG (iShares Core US Aggregate Bond ETF) Not short-term. Treasury holdings will keep it stable tho. Longer duration treasury funds have "crisis alpha" -- they *rise* in value during deflationary shocks. See the performance of TLT or EDV during 2008, Covid, or even this past April for an example. But they are not short-term. Only put in money you don't need for a long time.

Here are quick one-handed tricks: 1. Wedge & twist: Put the jar upright in a drawer corner (or between two heavy objects) with a damp towel/non-slip mat around it. Press the jar into the corner and twist the lid. 2. Knee hold: Sit, clamp the jar between your knees/thighs for grip, then twist the lid. 3. Break the seal: Use a spoon/butter-knife TIP to gently pry up the lid’s edge until you hear a pop, then open (much easier). 4. Grip boost: Slip a thick rubber band or silicone jar gripper over the lid; better traction with less force. 5. Heat assist: Run just the metal lid under hot water for ~20–30 seconds, dry, then twist. Safety: avoid using teeth; if it’s glass, don’t bang hard—light taps only.

VOO and chill works if your only risk is market volatility, but not if the risk is political or currency instability. VOO = 100% U.S. large caps, so you’re fully tied to the U.S. economy and the dollar. If you actually want political-risk protection, diversification matters: - VOO (40%): U.S. growth core - VXUS (20%): global exposure outside the U.S. - GLDM / IAU (15%) – gold hedge - BIL / SHV (10%) – cash & liquidity - STIP / TIP (10%) – inflation-protected bonds - SCHD / JEPI (5%) – dividend income buffer That mix keeps upside exposure but cushions geopolitical shocks. Not financial advice, just risk management 101.

r/investingSee Comment

VT is definitely a solid one ETF solution, globally diversified, 60% US and 40% international, covers nearly 9,000 stocks, and yields around 2%. But for real political-risk protection, it’s still 100% equity exposure. If the goal is to hedge instability, I’d still mix VT with: GLDM or IAU: inflation & crisis hedge BIL or SHV: cash-like stability STIP or TIP: inflation-protected bonds SCHD or JEPI: dividend income & lower volatility So maybe 60% VT + 40% hedges for a balance between growth and protection. Not financial advice, just fundamentals talking.

r/investingSee Comment

TIP Bonds guarantee you will ALWAYS forever be ahead of inflation. Over 30 years, you win by about 34%. Doesn't seem like much, but compare that to what your position is.

Totally hear you, i’ve been trading for seven years, using probability and statistics like IVR or expected move, etc., And 7 years ago not long after when I switched to that Is when I was able to replace my salary at my job because of the higher probability in advantages of some of these strategies. I haven’t met one but to the people who trade full time by just buying calls my hat is off to you, because that’s very hard to be profitable with. but spreads don’t require a big move if you use them for the right job. Debit verticals are for momentum, you buy a small width and let delta do the work, you only need the stock to lean your way and you take 25 to 50 percent and recycle. Credit verticals are for chop or mean reversion, short strike near 0.30 to 0.40 delta, you win with small favorable moves, with time decay, and often even if price drifts a bit against you. With selling premium you can be wrong on direction and still make money. Like when your 4DTE call loses value even though the stock was up- the guy who sold that contract is collecting credit. The Key is liquidity and structure, stick to tight bid ask names, keep widths sensible, manage early stc. Most professional options traders are selling premium because theta and modest IV contraction help them, and the flexibility some of these strategies can give you. that is why in my personal opinion defined risk spreads are a better intraday tool than naked calls or puts for consistency. But this is just purely my opinion as a random trader on Reddit, people obviously make money buying options, in my opinion it’s just harder. ***TIP- The delta of the option your buying is “roughly” the POP (probability of profit) of your trade. So if you buy a 0.43 delta call, your call has a “roughly” 40-46% chance of making 1 penny or more on your trade***

If -2,000 I will cut usually its -1500 -1200 when I hit the sell button. If it's +2000 I have the order in ready to hit sell but watch the candles print on the 5 min /15 min.. my trade is a bet on the 15min candle ... so let it run a little Watching how the candles are printing if it's a big move letting it run until I see the 5 min start to act fishy then im out. Usually (knock on wood) when my order gets filled it goes in +500 instanly... I suggest you pull up spy and QQQ and watch the 5min 15 min candles all day along with the 30 min and 4 hour candles . .HOT TIP : MOST OF MY TRADES HAPPEN after we have broken the high of the day or the low of the day... Do not guess that hey we will break the LOD or HOD when it happens jump on and see if it gives you anything if it pulls back in get out Hope this helps

during covid i bought on a HOT TIP Novavax at $5. sold it for $200 a share in the middle of a tumultuous 2021 for the stock. Worst was SCWO. I bought it at $1.50 and it sits at .37 not earth shattering dollar amounts.

I really like NVDA, but I would diversify. I’d sell half and divy that up. Half of the proceeds in S&P and half in TIP. I’m a conservative and pretty risk averse though.

We made the BEST deal with Chy-nah to day Its beautiful. TIP TOP!!!. I’ve agreed to lift ALL tariffs on Chy-nah and have negotiated a deal that the US will now pay 1TRILLION in tariffs to Chy-nah and in return we will move many beautiful AMERICAN companies to Chy-nah where President Xi promised me that they will ABSOLUTELY think about renegotiating in 10 years Its simple the BEST deal. Im the best, President is pretty good too you know. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely The TACO in Chief

What about TIPS? I had been reading about them, because they are supposed to be “inflationary protected” but when I looked at TIPS ETFs (TIP, VTIP) and the time period from March 2021 to June 2022… it seems as if it actually decreased in value. Does one have to purchase TIPS directly to get the inflation protection? Or am I missing something else?

I just read everything he says and apply the Trump Inverse Principle. He lies or projects about 100% of the things he says, so we can be certain that his Golden Shower Dome will cost far in excess of $61 billion, and Canada is in no way, and never will, consider being a US state. World makes a lot more sense if you use the TIP.

Nothing wrong with broad index investing except it’s usually relatively boring (which is a good thing). Think about 15%-20% of the time it can be exciting .. either good or bad; being a human endeavor at least some “social psychology” drama to be expected. That said some investors and especially speculators are far more competitive but I also remember watching some of Buffett’s and Munger’s videotaped musings … about not being very impressed with more [other] professional money managers. People who do this full-time. Not saying mirroring Berkshire is the way forward as they themselves change with the times, but many will fall short = may as well go with an index unless doing something combining investments with taxes, hedging corporate concerns, etc.., There’s also asset allocation with investor age to consider (like adding bonds but a bit of non-US too). If keeping the uncomplicated theme, Vanguard’s “life strategy” 4-index fund asset allocations (2 stocks, 2 bonds) seem relatively simple with a 5^th (TIP) fund only added to the fund coming due. Will actually be replicating that with iShares mostly fwiw except with BNDX.

Over long term, stocks and real estate offsets inflation. TIP security benefits when inflation rises. For now, I think any significant inflation jump will be short lived as economy likely will slow down, thus softening demand for goods. If you want to trade or hedge this thing short term, any kind of hedge will may lose money if inflation turns out to be short lived. So are you actually trying to hedge something? Like are you assuming stocks are going to tank initially when inflation spikes? If so, buying put spreads on stocks or reducing your equity exposure….

TIPS = treasury inflation protected securities. They operate the same as normal bonds but the real yield could actually be higher than a nominal yield of a normal bond if the interest rate stays the same and inflation increases. TIPS and gold are two of the best hedges against stagflation. tickers: STIP, LTPZ,TIP, SCHP

If the Fed intervenes to suppress yields, long-term Treasuries could see price appreciation as rates decline (ETFs like TLT or interest-rate-hedged bond funds like AGIHX & BNDX). Pair with corporate bonds (LQD) to capture credit spreads… Or Inflation-Protected Assets if they print? Like TIPS (ETFs like TIP) and (GLD, DBB) and energy/agriculture stocks (XOM, MOS) as real-asset hedges?

My wife and I recently moved to managing our own, actually still in the process of moving everything (got lucky and moved everything to cash about 2 weeks ago, so just slowly buying stuff now). I would suggest a more diversified portfolio. BND, TIP are both good safer hedges, mix in some more tech heavy EFTs just in case you are wrong. We went with 10 EFTs for now and weighed about 65% growth centric. It's also not the worst idea to put in some safer stocks or ones with higher dividends. That said, you could be just fine with VT, but know that your recovery period in a downturn could be longer and you are exposed to more risk.
