Something that really clicked for me watching this oil shock unfold — most retail investors (including me a year ago) think of their portfolio as a list of tickers. But in an oil shock like this one, what matters is which pillar of the business gets hit. Alaska Air is the example I keep coming back to today. They just suspended their 2026 guidance because fuel swung from $4.45 to $5.15 a gallon IN ONE WEEK. That's a $600M headwind for Q2 — basically $3.60 hit to EPS. But here's the thing that surprised me when I actually read the report: premium travel was up 8%, corporate travel up 19%, and advance corporate bookings are up 30%. So the demand side of the business is arguably the strongest it's been in years. What broke was the cash flow / cost side. Same company, completely different story depending on which dimension you look at. This is why I stopped looking at a stock as "good or bad" and started thinking about it across separate pillars — valuation, growth, quality, cash flow, financial health, demand, momentum. One app I've been testing breaks them out that way, and the thing that makes it useful for a situation like this is you can SEE instantly that ALK's demand score is strong but cash flow score is terrible. That's not one number — that's two different trades. Practical version for a new investor: next time you're looking at an airline, oil-adjacent name, or anything energy-sensitive, don't ask "is this stock good." Ask "which part of this business is broken vs which part is fine." You'll end up with way better risk/reward setups.

I don't know how old you are, but life is far from over. I'm 61 and have been way more dinged than this multiple times, some my own doing (business mistakes) some nature (Hurriane Ian) some health (Wife became ill and unemployed for 10 years). You don't need to see anyone to talk about your problems. Stand up on your feet and start again. 100k is a cheap lesson dude! Since you said "Start a life" I'm going to assume you're around 25. If you can manage to structure your debt to pay it dow sure and steady, don't make any silly moves like a new car or tatoos, dining out too much, etc and you can scrimp to save $100 a week, at age 65 you'll have $3.8 million in the bank earning an average of 11% in index funds or some safe mutual funds. As you get older, you'll surely increase your savings rate, but start immediately with a weekly savings, auto transfered into a Schwab account in a ROTH IRA and swept into an index to start. If you do that, the $3.8 is completly tax free! You pull 4% to 5% per year, never diminish your principle and you'll have an annual income of $152-190k per year, TAX FREE.You're doing fine, just don't give up and don't blame the US. The US is also one of the few countries that you can absolutely turn your woes into wins. I can't possibly tell enough people your age that time is your SUPER POWER and each year you delay is super costly. If you wait just one year (Your first year is your biggest growth year in the future) that 3.8 mil at retirement is reduced by ~$350,000. That's the cost of delaying just one year. PLEASE DON'T DELAY AND GET THIS GOING THIS WEEK.
